ssk is overrated and overpriced. it is only popular because it looks cool t b h.
standard model m uses the same switch with more keys and a reasonable price.
regardless of its age, model f is far superior than its successor.

I also have a full size model M and I just wish its case was slimmer like the SSK. The thing that surprised me most about the model F is that its thinner then both

Thanks, I'll consider it. The reason I was wanting 3 rather than 2 is just so it looks as close as possible to an ordinary TKL when the split halves are together, but I guess being able to find parts is more important. The ergodox is definitely an inspiration for a split design, but I don't want to re-learn how to type. I'll probably be copying the MCP23018 circuit and techniques for constructing a layered acrylic case from the ergodox, at least.

I'll post pics as I work on it (for some rare /mkg/ OC), but I need to make and measure some PCBs (for which I don't have all the parts yet) before I can even start working on the case.

Fellas, can I have some help?

I work in excel all day, and thus, would like a mechanical keyboard as they keyboard I work on is pure shite.

Ideally, it would be black, non-offensive (no lights, minimal/no branding, you get the score) and must have a numpad. I'm not super picky over specs so long as it feels like a mechanical keyboard should

The cheaper the better

I use a zowie keyboard that i got for free a long time ago and i like it. If there's nothing that can be rec'd, I support I can bring that keyboard into work and buy a new one for hime but id rather not?

If you're in the USA and are able to have a noisy keyboard at work, a new Unicomp Model M costs $85, has a numpad, and is a superb typing experience.

Recently bought a 60% keyboard, thinking it was this top-tier shit for hardcore keyboard enthusiasts. I ended up selling it after a couple months of using it. I don't understand why anyone, especially someone who is into keyboards, would use this shit as their main keyboard at their workstation. It's so impractical if you don't need it for portability or whatever.

I'm pretty new to mechanical keyboards
I fell for a meme and bought a retarded rgb gaymer keyboard, with browns which I quite like, but I realised that I literally never use the numpad, or the macro keys,so I think I want a 60%. More like a baby boomer thing that was passed down through the generations. You talk as if TKL and 60% are a recent thing, when in fact its the opposite. Full size keyboards have only recently become popular, and back then the only people who used full size keyboards were admins or accountants. The average consumer didn't need a numpad back then

My dad was a systems analyst back in the late 1970-80s, and there definitely were full size keyboards, but all the ones we had weren't full size ones. You must understand that in back in early 2016 this keyboard was shilled relentlessly by me and this italian guy. Little did people then know that the keyboard is not actually a functional keyboard. It does not send any information to the computer, all the usb connection does is power an internal microphone and some capacitative sensor that detect when a key is touched. Notice that I said touched, as you can't press the keys down, they are completely static. Upon a key being touched, an internal microphone plays a high quality flac file of a female voice saying "thock" with a strong french accent. Not making a "thock" sound, just literally saying "thock". Everyone who praises this keyboard is simply acting as if it were an actual keyboard out of buyers remorse. Thus it is the greatest meme of all, and grants the owners the maximal number of attainable meme points.

Who gives a fuck about some generic IBM-compatible from the 90s?! The 600 was the only Amiga computer without the numpad, and it was a huge problem with some games. W
>>
>>59799015
Easier to center for ergonomics, more room for your mouse, plus very few people actually use numpads for anything. I like having a numpad, but I'd be open to pairing a TKL board with a separate numpad. Hell, just give me a board with a layout similar to my Thinkpad's and I'd probably be good.

I wish Apple made a keyboard/trackpad combo, with a palm rest and trackpad positioned below the keyboard like a laptop.
>>
>>59808429
Apple's keyboards are god awful. The only reason I keep mine around is because my Model M can't trigger alternative boot modes.
If you have a real keyboard you can just put the trackpad in that position and it'll work fine.

Funny you say that, I typed that message on my Thinkpad, which I'm still using right now. Trackpoints are amazing from an ergonomic standpoint. I actually want a desktop keyboard with a trackpoint more than I want a mechanical. I'd still keep a mouse around for TF2 though.

It's not that simple. On a desk, the trackpad would be too high in relation to the keyboard and get in the way because it's raised in the back and not flat. Also I was thinking more along the lines of lap use, which requires them to be attached and have a built-in palm rest.

Trackpoints are nice, and much nicer than trackpads in general.
I can't go back though. Apple's trackpad's have so much functionality when you pair them with something like better touch tool that it's not worth it to go back for me. Not to mention how accurate they are compared to a trackpoint.

That's why I said if you had a *real* keyboard, not one of Apple's MUH-THIN pieces of shit.
Magic Keyboards may look nice, but they're dreadful to type on.

>Also I was thinking more along the lines of lap use, which requires them to be attached and have a built-in palm rest.
I know they had things like this for the original trackpad and keyboard, not sure about the new models though.
>>
>>59808604
>I know they had things like this for the original trackpad and keyboard, not sure about the new models though.
All of the ones I've seen just attach the trackpad next to the keyboard, which I find impossible to use ergonomically. I've never seen one that actually makes it laptop style with a palm rest and trackpad mounted below the keyboard.
>>
Can anyone explain to me the benefit of a split spacebar? I'm curious about it, but not entirely sure how it's a benefit. I do feel like my hands shift inward to hit my spacebar from the center of the key sometimes, so maybe that in itself would be a huge benefit to me (not having to move my hands back outward, that is.)

I guess being able to use smartphone gestures is kinda cool, but I'm gonna stick with my trackpoint. I just like how it allows you to move your mouse cursor while keeping your hands near the keyboard's home row. Being able to scroll by holding the middle button is great too.
>>
>>59808943
Most of those are actually "Force" clicks. If I click with three fingers I do a middle click, but if I click hard with three fingers it closes the window/tab that's currently under my mouse cursor.
If I press with 4 fingers in Safari it's set to refresh 4chan X, but if I press hard it refreshes the page completely. Stuff like that is what makes it way useful.
>>
>>59808992
For me that sounds like it would be a hassle, I rely heavily on tactile feedback, and I'm still mourning the death of phones with thumb keyboards.
>>
>>59809039
It has a motor in it that simulates clicks. It's not a vibration like on a phone, it physically feels like you're pressing down on something.
It's not as nice and clean of a click as the old trackpads, but it's good enough.
>>
>>59809084

I'm kind of interested in picking up a MK, but I also hate scalper prices on enthusiasts stuff. What's the general pricepoint beyond which shit is just scalping?
>>
>>59819127
You can get MK for as low as 30 bucks to $2000. what exactly are you looking for
>>
>>59819127
There's not really scalping here. If you want something entry-level expect to spend about $100 USD. If you find a great deal, sometimes you can get something good for about $75, but under that is chink shit territory where you never know if you're getting something good or not.

Custom keyboards usually are $200 or more, but usually they're special stuff where you'll know exactly what you're getting for the money. For example, the kishsaver model F was around $400 but sold out quickly.
>>
>>59819390
I take that back, looks like kishsaver model Fs are still around (and still about $400).

Anyway, the point still is that the expensive keyboards are for people familiar with MKs who know exactly what they want (or are just richfags). For somebody just starting, shoot for $85-120 and you will still end up with a very good keyboard.
>>
>>59819344
>what exactly are you looking for
Analogy, when buying headphones, the Audiotechnica at 130$ are a meme and anything more expensive is pointless from a practical standpoint, and you can get suprisingly good headphones at 25$ (Monoprice), and the OEMs sell highquality as 'offbrand' for pretty cheap 40-60$ (Superlux), and sometimes the chinese knock-offs are better than the name brand (lol Beats), but most people will be perfectly well served by 70$ Sony MDR studio headphones.
Personally, I bought a broken pair of Mixmasters for ~50$ and fixed them then spent the savings on an dedicated audiocard

...but when it comes down to it, even a 1000$ pair of cans only cost anywhere from 2-20$ to manufacture.
and I refuse to pay a 5000% markup just because I'm American.

Are the cheapass chinese a ~75% quality for half the price? Are they readily modded? If so, I'm getting a sub-50$ board and I'll invest more later if I like it.

Tenkey is mandatory.

>>59819464
>85-120$
I guess I'll be delving into chinkshit territory reviews. Those Monoprice headphones were really fucking nice with about 20 minutes of fixing.
>>
>>59819535
Do me a favor and read the links in the OP. For 80-100 bucks you can get keyboards that are fully programmable and have build quality so great that they might even outlast you. Or if you don't care about any of that you can get a cheap Chinese keyboard for 30-50 bucks
>>
>>59819535
Since you're american, an $85 unicomp model M is basically an irreplaceable experience, unless you get something used. But yeah, feel free to get some chinkshit board on banggood and post your opinion of it here if you like it.

The only problem with chinkshit is that if it sucks, then you wasted your money and have no room to complain.

Looking at buying a used 'vintage' models, they go for under 40$ sometimes. Looks like used/vintage is exactly what I want, the chinkshit is all trying to imitate "gaymer" fancy shit. The plain Monoprice looks exactly right though on sale for 36$ at the moment.
>>
>>59819680
Honestly, for the amount it improves my life, buying a decent pair of headphones and a keyboard was well worth a couple hundred even though I don't make much.

>>59819535
The headphone analogy makes sense to an extent, but you won't be able to fix many keyboards without spending a decent chunk of cash. Even if you build an entire keyboard from the ground up, you'll still need to spend about $0.40 per key just for the switch (and that's on the very cheap end for switches), much less the case, caps, and other electronics. They really aren't marked up much.

Being an audiophile is suffering.

The Behringer UCA 202 shows that "audiophile" quality DACs can be built and sold for 20-30$. But they intentionally cheaped out on a single transistor on that model to save 50 cents (There's a guide to replace it). Then all other DACs of that quality start at 120$ and up and are marketed to "enthusiasts" who apparently piss money and shit gold.

But anything less will be a waste with decent headphones assuming it even lasts longer than three months.

the market makes sense when you consider the following facts of economics:
1. pricing is based on what people will pay, and

audiophile shit is just an excuse to create a differential pricing market, it has nothing to do with materials, labor or R&D. it's a perfectly rational market

Stopped by the goodwill on the way home today and picked up an ancient BTC-5100 capacitive and a logitech marble trackball in perfect shape for $4 total. Best stuff I've seen there in awhile. The keyboard even had a DIN to PS2 adapter already. Mostly I was just there to grab a surge protector and a 12VDC power supply. Only paid $3 for those. $7 and change total for all that was pretty nice.

Now I just gotta figure out which of my two BTC-5100's I want to keep. My old one looks nicer since it's the classic black and gray two tone with the bright white lettering but the new one feels better.

I want one so bad but I'm gonna wait for the earlybirds to get shipped out so I can see some reviews. Can't decide which color desu. The industrial grey looks too brown in some pics and just fine in others.
>>
>>59820870
Yeah I'm pretty much a sucker for even letting myself spend over $400 on a keyboard.

However once this reproduction run is over they're probably never going to be made again.

I'd rather jump on the opportunity while I can instead of kicking myself in the foot later on.

>>59821067
Personally I just can't stand the off-white/beige color, industrial gray looks much better especially with colored keycaps.

Although I know you can custom order another color for an extra cost, black is also an option too.
>>
>>59821159
extra colors are $300 and then $100 for each additional kb

Anybody have experience with g20 caps? Can you tell me what they're like to type on?

Just got some g20 keycaps for my plum 108 30g. Hasn't arrived yet but I had a look at the page and it showed cherry + topre stems, so i got the caps.

There are custom model M usb controllers. Like this one:

http://mg8.org/rump/

It should be simple enough to adapt it to the keyboard matrix of your pic related. I used this for a Hungarian layout Model M which had some extra keys.
>>
>>59824010
Same here, i used it for hungarian layout too. Works better than i expected
>>
>>59824082
Huh, nice. What scan code did you set up for the numpad "." on the right? I tried 0x85, but it didn't get registered in the OS at all (linux).
>>
>>59824167
I do not remember, and i am not home, sorry. Have you tried other dot codes?
>>
>>59821159
To be honest I'm pretty fuckin jealous and would buy a kishsaver model For in a flash if I was making over $70k a year. Unfortunately I'm just a grad student for now, so maybe in 3 more years they'll still be around when I have spending money again
>>
>>59824407
Sure, I ended up with 0x37, which is just the regular "." . It works fine, I just wondered how you set it up.

And when he says that's it, he means they're literally throwing out the tooling. Even if they wanted to make more afterwards, they'd have to prepare new tooling from scratch to do so.

>>59825054
Yeah, I thought as much. Still, props to somebody for making them again at all. Why are they throwing out the tooling, though? Is there not enough demand or something?

The real tragedy in all this, though, is that unicomp doesn't use capacitative switches and their membrane isn't all that great in my experience.

I got a question. I made it my business to get a "floating cap"-style keyboard and get custom keycaps for it. But- I have no idea if the keycap profile is a big deal or doesn't matter at all (http://keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php), both for usability and for style points.

Does anyone have experience with non-OEM profiles? Is it comfy? Does it look nice? How does it compare??

>>
>>59827367
You are paying $100+ for keycaps, so you'd expect some quality control, but there isn't. With every single set you always get missaligned keycaps, which you can replace for an extra fee. Only if its really bad like a broken stem then they'll send you a replacement, which you also have to pay shipping for.
>>
>>59825480
It's not profitable to sell $400 reproduction IBM keyboards over the long run. Only keyboard autists would ever justify throwing endless money for a brand new Model F and that's simply not enough to keep production going indefinitely.

Honestly I'm pretty amazed they were even able to keep the prices that low, Model F's in their heyday were priced at well over $1000.

Although it would be awesome if somehow they could give the tooling equipment to Unicomp or someone else willing to keep it alive.

When did that start happening?
I've had entire kits replaced pro bono by SP, along with random space bars and shit like that.
Haven't bought anything since Granite R2, though.
>>
>>59826791
At least I'm not the only one thankfully. Funny enough I didn't even know about this project until two days ago, was originally looking at Model M's.

Ordered mine with the full HHKB/Unix layout and numpad+cursor keys on the right side cluster. Pic related.

Almost went for the F62 but I don't think I could live with a 60% keyboard even with function layers.
>>
>>59827618
Tempted to pick up an F62 as well, and maybe some compact cases for both keyboards but that'd be ridiculously expensive.

Your layout sounds pretty dank, I just went for a standard TKL
>>

>>

So you've bought from them before, I take?

Aren't there other vendors selling other profiles?
>>
>>59827704
Yes.
Gateron/EnjoyPBT, NPKC, GMK, and Vortex make cherry profile keycaps
Maxkey, Vortex and some others make SA and DSA profile like keycaps.
Tai hao has their own profile, but its pretty much a slightly shorter OEM
