convenvience.
if you're going to run it on your hardware and it requires a firmware blob to function properly you will install it anyways.

It's the same reason why debian despite buddying up with FSF still maintains a non-free repository which disqualifies it as a truly free distribution. To make the process easier for the user.

I wouldn't mind a phone that could text, make phone calls and browse the web, while being all/mostly free software. That's all I do on my phone, and it's pretty obvious that iOS and Android are both massive botnets at this point.
>>
>>59773868
thanks
>>
>>59773821
[optional]
unlock your bootloader, find your device at https://download.lineageos.org/, download an image for that device if it's available
[/optional]
go to settings - security and enable installation of apps from unknown sources
go to f-droid.org, download and install the apk. Get all your software from that repository instead of the Google Play Store. That one will be unavailable to you anyways, because:

under no circumstance, never, add a Google account to the device.

Then you will have the ideal combination of freedom and usability, a phone that runs Android without Google services and only free software (except for drivers)

>Apr 6 14:56:27 tdm: :0[1243] error: Failsafe client "/bin/xterm" execution failed: No such file or directory

I tried giving full permission to all files in the tdm folder, and even gave full permission to the entire folder tree with no luck. The only solution forum I've been able to find was for KDE, and it's solution was what I described. Not sure where I'm fucking this up at.

it won't be a pleasant experience if you want a full DE and prefer chromium to firefox or to a lighter browser, otherwise - it's not too bad

If userbenchmarks is to be trusted on 4 threads it will be slightly worse or about the same as my i5-750 for which it takes ~5 hours to compile chromium, ~45 minutes for firefox, about 30 mins for gcc. I forgot how long it took to compile X with kde plasma, I think it was under two hours or smth like that.

-r for region

You can map these to PrtSc and combinations like alt + PrtSc to get some good keyboard functionality. Other programs surely have the same functionality, I am only familiar with xfce4-screenshooter.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Literally identical to Arch, expert the kernel has no proprietary firmware/drivers, and you can't install any nonfree software. It's great if you entirely use free software (no steam etc), and have hardware that doesn't need blobs (usually wifi cards).

I start learning how to use linux, how the hell do you memorize all the commands for the terminal, do you keep a sheet next to your monitor or something? Or do you just remember from constantly using them?
>>
>>59776462
>do you keep a sheet next to your monitor
You remember the stuff you use the most. Maybe keep a notes.txt in ~/Documents. I've been doing that since I started a couple of years ago and I still make new notes and find old ones useful.
>>
>>59776462

Learning how to find help in linux is really useful, make sure you know:

man xxx
xxx -h
xxx -help
>>
>>59776462
I learned by installing openbox, firefox, mpv and lxterminal on debian netisnt
at first I forced myself to do everything via terminal except for browing and watching anime
(I didn't even have a taskbar/panel, just a wm, terminal, browser and mpv)
then I was required to figure out how some things work and what makes up a DE in order to bring functionality to my desktop
I installed pcmanfm (file manager), feh (for wallpapers), tint2 (taskbar), lxappearance for themes and mousepad for editing some configs

just try doing everything in the terminal (besides the stuff you obviously can't like web browsing and image/video viewing, etc) for a month
>>
>>59776462
Just by constantly using them. Try to do most tasks in the terminal and you'll learn the common command pretty quick. Memorizing them all isn't really feasible. I've been using linux for >10 years and for those couple of times a year commands, I still have to look them up. Same for the couple times a year arguments.

Using Ctrl+R to search your bash history is also helpful.

Nouveau or NVIDIA for bumblebee on a laptop?
>>
>>59777389
Well, nouveau is the technically better solution as it's a lot less finicky. Problem is, nouveau performance is absolute dogshit (truly awful, probably 10% of the proprietary driver's performance). If you need the discrete card, you probably care about performance, so nouveau isn't good enough. On the upside, this actually works really well, like on windows (it's largely useless, because your integrated graphics probably get better performance).

Bumblebee is a terrible hack, but it can be usable enough (you manually launch the program you want better performance in by prepending "optirun" to the command). It has a lot of issues, such as crashing, but tends to work decently once you finish the painful initial setup. It also depends on the proprietary nvidia driver.

Is there any 802.11n chipset that doesn't run like dogshit on linux? I've tried Intel, Atheros and Broadcom cards. None of them go as fast as on Windows. In fact they are always at least 50% slower. Is bumblebee being painful a meme or reality? I'm not sure if I should get a laptop with optimus (xps 15 vs 13). Ideally I'd like to be able to just pick a GPU from lightDM or something, or just reboot and pick a card on boot, instead of using a painful solution like bumblebee. Is that doable?
>>
>>59778596
For $25, it's compatible with openwrt / lede, has 16 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM.
Hell, Mi WiFi 3 has 128 MB ROM and 128 MB RAM for the same price range.

If shit doesn't work, I'll just set it up as access point.

After crowdfunding, Daniel Goelle just completed the damn driver in March 2017, so any stable lede firmware for xiaomi after that date should be better than current stable (17.0.1).

distro is really irrelevant for stuff like that, your desktop environment is what really matters. just pick a distro with one that isn't laggy (ubuntu's unity and GNOME are both pretty slow).

Hi, I want to make a simple systemd service unit that runs on boot after the network is online.
I wrote this:
[Unit]
Description=Web Server1
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/python /home/kevin/webserver.py
Restart=on-failure

, named it webserver.service and placed it in /etc/systemd/system

The service works if I do
sudo systemctl start webserver

But doesn't start on boot. I have to run it manually.

I also ran
sudo systemctl enable webserver.service

But nothing happened.
How do I make it run on boot?

At my job I have worked mainly in AWS and have not really had to handle virtualization outside of that beyond running a few VMs locally occasionally.

For managing and running a virtual network and 10+ VMs over 2-3 ideally headless hosts what should I look into as far as vmware vs virtualbox? My company seems to lean towards vmware for internal use so I would be willing to pay a bit for the learning experience.

>>

there's two steps to make grub work (bios);
- grub-install (installs the bootsector onto the disk(s))
- grub-mkconfig (generates a config file)

to completely install grub (or repair it), you can;
- boot a linux livecd (doesn't need to be the same distro or version)
- mount and chroot into your installation
- run two grub commands

for example (assuming root and boot are on /dev/sda1);
# mkdir /tmp/mount
# mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/mount
# mount --bind /dev /tmp/mount/dev
# mount --bind /sys /tmp/mount/sys
# mount --bind /proc /tmp/mount/proc
# chroot /tmp/mount bash
(the following happen in the chroot; the on-disk install)
# grub-install /dev/sda
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

If you are having problems with your ACLs a good solution is to develop your hamstring and groin.
The ACL is the antagonist ligament of the PCL and avoids that the Tibia slides forwards when the quadriceps is under contraction. Therefore developing the antagonist muscle groups to the quadriceps has the same net effect.

It might be useful to have them written somewhere. Use TAB to auto complete.

You can create a text file in your home called "command-line-help.txt" then in a file called .bashrc in you home folder add this at the end:
alias halp="man ~/command-line-help.txt"

Now every time you type "halp" and hit enter it will show your list of commands.

You can replace "man" by any other reader you prefer, like "more", "less" or "nano".
>>
>>59781845
Btw, if you need help while using another command, hit ctrl+z, and the program will be stopped and put on background. You may them read your help file and type "fg" and hit enter to go back to your command.
>>
>>59779356
Wget and curl are the goto programs for this. Youtube-dl if it is videos. You can use it recursively.
