/g/'s long trusted containment thread for stupid shit. If you see stupid shit cluttering the board, redirect it here.

Googling your question before asking it here is encouraged, but as the name suggests it's not required.

Don't bump your question, you're not entitled to an answer. Wait for the next thread if you have to.

How would I go about to reset this timer dynamically? if I just call startTimer again, it creates a new object and cycles between those two countdown timers in the timer-div.

I need some kind of an angle adapter for a VESA 75mm mount.

I have a couple of monitors mounted on Ergotron LX arms and they're absolutely fantastic, but they don't allow you to angle the monitor down more than 5 degrees.

I'm using a vertical arrangement and I'd like to be able to angle the top monitor down by an addition 10-15 degrees or so.

Is there some kind of angled adapter block I can buy that will go between the mounting plate and the monitor to let me accomplish this?

I wouldn't even bother unless you're running into performance issues.

When you do upgrade just go for the 7700k and a z270 mobo. DDR4 ram to go with it, but I really don't know what you could be doing that 16gb isn't enough for you.

The other day I had Skyrim and Starsector running on different monitors, as well as discord / aquasuite / msi afterburner / boinc / foobar / waterfox all running at the same time and I still had a few free gigs of ram.

>>
>>59744079
The things I'm interested in mostly are motherboard features that I'm missing out on. Things like DDR4 speeds, m.2, thunderbolt/C 3.1, all the fancy synced up rgb stuff. Really just the creature comforts.
The reason I have 32GB is just because I had gone through a number of PCs that that's just the amount that I had lying around.
>>
>>59744109

Some of that stuff is nice, but I really don't think it's worth the cost of upgrading just for those features unless you plan on recycling the old components into a new system for some other use.

M.2 NVMe is great, I haven't even used my USB-C port yet. Synced RGB is definitely a personal thing.

You're probably better off waiting another generation or so, when you'll get a bigger measured performance improvement.

looks like they're crawling through websites to register posting bots.

if it have semi-sophisticated firewall you can geolocate their ip and ban everyone from china or russia or wherever they're coming from.
>>
>>59744053
These are probably both attackers and search engine bots. Generally yes, keep your software up to date and don't keep default passwords. That doesn't really apply for software packages that are no longer maintained though...

>>59743746
Pretty sure there's documentation on the same site where you signed up, but I personally haven't found it to be super-effective. That said, at least it gives you the ability to threaten them with the FCC do-not-call list fines or whatever.

>>59743993
This is too vague. Computers can be used for pretty much everything. Is your only interest programming? I'd say most of your 'easier' projects are going to be projects that focus on something other than programming. The more niche the application, the better chances the code will be easy to improve. (eg. a insect-migration tracking software for written for BeOS).

>>59743973
Unless you go used, you're not going to save any significant amount of money going with the 4000-series CPU instead of the 7000 series. Intel almost never drops prices on older models.

>make my monitor vertical
>name of
Portrait orientation, or 'rotation'.

>>59744593
Should be identical performance. What gave you the idea there would be a loss?

>>59744832
Conceptually:
Proxy doesn't encrypt your traffic, it only relays it - so the site you connect to doesn't know who you are, but your ISP and other entities along the connection chain still may be able to monitor everything. VPN encrypts your traffic to the VPN provider, but traffic between that VPN provider site and whatever place you connect out to on the Internet isn't necessarily encrypted. I can't really comment on what providers are good. I don't use one.

python has some weird ""optional"" styling, so it depends on who's code reviewing you, if they're a stickler for the styleguide, PEP or whatever it's called

Like you can do loops a procedural/C-like way, or you can do it the "python" way. weird stuff like that sticklers will lambast.

if it's just for your personal project, not long at all if you already know a few other languages.

So I'm curious

Why does pretty much all FOSS have functional, but however shitty overall UI design / UX? There are no examples I can think of that actually nail this, but so many that don't, like Notepad++, Audacity, KMeleon, qBittorrent, LibreOffice... And the list goes on and on and on, while proprietary software, such as the Adobe suite, MS Office, iOS...

Seriously you're using MS Office as an example of good UI design? The ribbon is shit. I use it everyday. It's never on the correct tab when I need it, and keyboard shortcut discoverability is terrible, even when there happens to be a shortcut for a given operation.

I'd use LibreOffice over MS Office 100% of the time, if I could be sure files were going to render the same. As it is, I often use LibreOffice side-by-side with MS Office for various tasks it just does better.

Unlock the bootloader of your phone, throw a custom rom on it (easiest bet; lineageOS, although ResurrectionRemix, and others have more features) then go to settings>audio/sound and disable camera shutter noise, it only works with the stock camera though.

If your phone is some obscure chinese brand or a samcuck without third party support check on fdroid for another camera and fuck around with the settings, you won't find a silent camera on playstore because it's against the law.

For torrenting unauthorized copies of media in countries which have strict surveillance and laws: what's the preferred way?

Programs cannot be trusted not to fuck over other programs, in terms of hogging cpu time, in terms of accessing hardware, in terms of writing stuff to disk in a way that other programs can understand, etc.

Programs talk to the kernel if they want any services. They don't get direct hardware access.

if installing windows like this, instead of getting completely through the install, put the hdd back into the laptop during the first reboot (that is, instead of letting it reboot, turn it off, and put the hdd back into the laptop to let it continue, it does not need the windows dvd past that point)

a key difference between typical proprietary software and typical foss, is that the former is made by one group of people, to the design of another group of people, for an audience of another group of people
while the latter is made by the people who use it
programmers tend to care more about hard functionality and efficiency, more than appearance and new-user-usability
if you want to get into more foss, you'll just have to get used to needing to pick up the manual every so often if you want to make the most of it

take vi as an extreme example, powerful, functional, and efficient, once you know how to use it, which the developers all do
but it's entirely devoid of any way for a new user to just go and use it, without reading anything, it's not that it's "hard on purpose", it's just made to suit how the developers work, since they make it for themselves, not others

So there is a mangaupdates userscript that pops the cover image for a manga on mouseover. The script first checks if an image is cached, if it is it shows the image, if not it shows the image and then puts in on the cache. Since the image is cached using GM_setValue, it can't be stored as a picture, so it is stored as text.

$('tr a').mouseover(function () {
var Href = $(this).attr('href');
if (Href.search(MangaPageTest) != - 1) {
$(this).css('font-weight', 'bold'); // Bolds previously hovered links.
if (GM_getValue(Href)) {
var retrievedLink = GM_getValue(Href);
$('#popover').empty();
$('#popover').append('<img src="' + retrievedLink + '"></img>');
$('#popover img').load(function() {
$('#popover').center();
});
console.log(Href + " has been found and retrieved from the cache."); // for testing purposes
}
else {
$.ajax({
url: Href,
dataType: 'text',
success: function (data) {
var imagelink = $('<div>').html(data)[0].getElementsByClassName('sContainer')[1].getElementsByTagName('img') [0].src;
// clear what's inside #popover and put the new image in there
$('#popover').empty();
$('#popover').append('<img src="' + imagelink + '"></img>');
$('#popover img').load(function () {
$('#popover').center();
});
// cache info
GM_setValue(Href, imagelink);
console.log(imagelink + ') successfully cached.') // for testing purposes
}
});
};
};
});

Yes, in all likelyhood. Don't feel targeted, they're literally everywhere. The various Linux servers I run are constantly bombarded with SSH root password probes and SMTP probes, and other things.

>If so, how do I defend myself against them?
If you're just running a static website, you probably don't have much to worry about. You can see in the logs that you posted that they're generally looking for known vulnerabilities in common blog frameworks and stuff, like the wp-login.php requests to probe for WordPress. The com_user request seems to be a known Joomla vulnerability.

If you're running dynamic code that you wrote yourself, you should of course follow normal good practices for input sanitation and such, but unless you're manually targeted by a human, you still shouldn't have much to worry about from these bots.

This is also why I tend to prefer the UX of FOSS software. New-user-friendliness is only a good thing for the first hour you use a program; once you get to know the program, it's mostly a hindrance. Functionality inside a mental model that actually makes sense once you get into the program is where FOSS tends to excel.

Run the manufacturer's diagnostic tools to check it as soon as you take it out of the box. Someone else may have wailed on it for you before you got it.
Be wary of some WD external drives, they supposedly come with hardware encryption that causes you to be assfucked if the controller dies, because then the contents of the drive can't be decrypted.
>How do I properly maintain one?
Don't wail on it. Store in a cool dry place away from magnets. Use a surge protector if it runs on external power.

You could use UDF.
It supports files over 4GB in size, and it's natively supported by Linux(usually) and Windows.
Just make sure you ALWAYS eject/unmount. There's a lack of fsck/chkdsk tools for UDF filesystems.

I'm trying to start a Raspberry pi project and have some questions about powering all the sensors and shit I'd need.
From what I've read a RPi 3 can supply 2amps of power through the 5volt pins. Is that per pin or both?
what's the best way to 'spit' the 5volt pins?
also does anyone know how to find the amp draw for a 4 channel relay and/or those Diymall .96" OLED displays?
thanks in advance for any help

Is there a common name for the game where you start on one square/hexagon with X resources, and can transfer resources to adjacent hexagons to conquer them? Need to make an algorithm that's really strong at this game, so it would help to know what it's actually called, if it has a name.

I doubt it's repairable. Laptop keyboards tend to be welded shut, so even if you can get it open and repair it, it's going to be extremely hard to put it back together.

If anything, you could be really lucky and the cable has just come out of alignment, in which case you can try and disassemble the laptop until you find the connector and re-seat it to see if that makes it work again.

Otherwise, the keyboard membranes themselves are likely broken in some way. You can probably find a fairly cheap replacement keyboard on eBay and replace it yourself, though.

>From what I've read a RPi 3 can supply 2amps of power through the 5volt pins. Is that per pin or both?
Admittedly I'm not entirely sure, but I've always assumed the 5 V pins go directly to the USB power-supply connector, in which case they can supply as much as your power-supply can supply, less what the Pi itself uses.

The Pi3 can only source 2A total from its power input connector. You need to rig up separate power for anything that draws over a few hundred mA.
>>
>>59752302
Of course, all that being said, don't underestimate the efficacy of percussive maintenance. You could just try massaging the keyboard semi-roughly to see if that makes whatever has shorted out come back apart again.

Begin by removing the keycaps around the affected area and see if something's obviously wrong. Do note that laptop keyboard keycaps are somewhat fragile, so take care not to break them.

I have a 1050 Ti and plan to upgrade.

Is the 1060 3gb worth it? Or should I just save up and get a 1060 6gb? Which models are the best?

My other option was a 480 4gb, but I'd need to buy a new power supply, so I'd just get the 1060 6gb by that point. I have only 1 available molex that I can turn into 6-pin for the 1060, because 480 uses 8-pin

I'm only interested in 1080p gaming.

that just lists standard and some non-standard modes, to get a true list of non-standard modes, you'll need to query your specific GPU (such as with "hwinfo --vbe")

Windows overwrites Grub when you install it, that's why you can't access it. This is why you install Linux last.

What was a typical hard drive capacity between 1998-2001? I'm doing a (relatively) retro PC build, and I intend to use a CompactFlash card as a hard drive (Little known fact, CompactFlash uses IDE's interface pin-for-pin. You just need to adapt the size down). I'm not sure whether to get 32GB or 64GB.
>>
>>59755861
~5-40GB
i think CF using IDE is reasonably common knowledge
a 32GB card is plenty of space for a 2001 gaming machine, big games were around 500MB-1.5GB each

also fyi;
Windows 98SE (which is an obvious OS choice), is ~250MB for a basic install (if you haven't installed 9x before, you might be surprised that you can actually pick what features you want to install to a degree, something removed from XP and later)
you can find an ISO of it on winworldpc, and it has no activation, only a product key

>>
>>59755861
>>59756129
oh yea, protip: when installing win9x, instead of just installing straight off the cd, do this;
pick "start computer with cd-rom support", instead of staring windows setup
fdisk and format if you haven't already
copy the "WIN98" folder from the cd onto C:
run setup from there (C:\WIN98\SETUP.EXE)

windows 9x leaves a lot of optional stuff on the cd, and will ask for the cd when it needs something
installing windows like this means that that stuff is always there on the hdd, and windows will know where it is, so you'll never be asked for the cd in the future, a great time saver (at the cost of some hdd space, i believe ~400MB)
