/g/'s long trusted containment thread for stupid shit. If you see stupid shit cluttering the board, redirect it here.

Googling your question before asking it here is encouraged, but as the name suggests it's not required.

Don't bump your question, you're not entitled to an answer. Wait for the next thread if you have to.

Is there a good tutorial out there to learn how to do diagrammatic modeling in LaTeX?

I made a "Favicon", how do I put it into html now?
>>
>>59729470
You put it into the root folder. Browsers will pick it up automagically if you call it "favicon.ico/png".

It really is that easy.

Something like '/var/www/yourwebsite'. Basically the actual folder you have your website-related shit.

To be more precise, the 'root folder' is the upper-most folder in a given context. In the context of a webserver it's usually the path I gave (for Linux anyway).

Switching HDD's between two laptops. The newer laptop is much more powerfull than the previous one. Despite this, I get a measy 1-2 FPS when running some Vidya on the new laptop. I could get a solid 25 FPS with the same game on the previous laptop even though it has weaker specs.

Is this because I didn't install any of the drivers for the new laptop?

It doesn't REQUIRE it, necessarily, but even the people who already know better do it because it's the easiest and safest option, so I'd recommend it. Every bit of function on your motherboard requires drivers, and Windows configured a buncha stuff around those, and then programs configure based on what you have, etc, so while you CAN just uninstall the old drivers and install the new, the odds are good that you'll fuck it up.

I'm thinking about setting up my next build with unRAID. As long as I had enough cores and video cards, I could run Win7 and Debian side by side, and use some KVM switches to switch between the two in an instant, right? I always end up dropping my dual-boots because it's a pain switching between them when I need the other OS, and it makes multitasking suck.

Also, they apparently use a flash drive for booting/authenticating unRAID. Aren't flash drives kinda too shitty to be reliable for something important, like YOUR ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEMS CORE FUNCTION? Or am I just misreading that because of how often flash cards like MicroSD fail? And does that mean I need an internet connection to verify my license each boot, or is that not the case?

shell is a process. XTerm and others are an interfact program.Meaning while shell is running it is waiting for user input. The way you give that process any input is through terminal emulators.

cmd.exe and Power Shell are "shell" like process from linux. When you launch cmd.exe and power shell it gives you default interface. If you had installed gentoo you would know how defaul shell interface looks like.

What should I use to easily synchronise my reaction image folder between my two laptops and maybe my phone, without entrusting my nazi frog meme pictures to the cloud. Maybe something usb based? Yes and no. You can host whatever you want, but when you route it through a VPN (this goes for anything really: ISP, VPS, etc) you'll have to abide by their terms of service.

All you'll be doing is route traffic through your VPN, but I'm not sure how people will reach you through that VPN.

>>59733993
These terms are confusing and I am not confident about border line defintion of them but my understanding is "Xterm" is an emulator that emulates CLI of shell in X windows system environment.
Bash is a type of shell
shell itself provide a Command line interface.
That is bare minimum. Xterm and other are wrappers of bare minimum command line interface.

Is it true that that it is generally better to overclock the fsb instead of multiplier?

I have a fx8350

I can get a stable oc of 4.6ghz if I primiraley oc the multiplier and only slightly the fsb

I can also get stable oc of 4.4ghz with a much more focused fsb oc and balanced multiplier oc

so which one is preferred, what would the optimum be for better perf overall?

What would change between using a PC and laptop. You'd want your back to be straight (though reclined slightly is preferable) your arms resting comfortably, and the screen not too close to your face.

The problem I find is that viewing angle makes you crane your neck downward, so just take breaks every now and then and stretch your neck.

So there is a mangaupdates userscript that pops the cover image for a manga on mouseover. The script first checks if an image is cached, if it is it shows the image, if not it shows the image and then puts in on the cache. Since the image is cached using GM_setValue, it can't be stored as a picture, so it is stored as text.

What I want to know is where on my computer is this text stored.

Multiplier is generally better. The fsb is the busspeed and it will overclock everything, not just your cpu. Best to use the multiplier and if you need that extra push increase the fsb as well but if you go to high you risk throttling the PCIE slot of your gpu for example. Not by a lot though, you can find the max busspeed you can go before throttling happens with google.

Top ones handle packets entering your server to the destination port on your server.

Bottom ones handle packets going out from your server from your server's source ports.

In case a reversal would help clarify further. Assume source ports on the top and destination ports on the bottom.

Top ones handle packets entering your server from the source port of server sending you packets.

Bottom ones handle packets going out from your server to destination ports on distant server.

So you can tag your own packets with the source of the port they originated (using sport).
>>
>>59735327
>So you can tag your own packets with the source of the port they originated (using sport).
Not sure if I suffered a micro-stroke when typing this. It's not that you tag your packets (the info is there regardless I believe), but it's more that you control from what port on your server something can leave.

iptables -I OUTPUT 13 -p tcp --sport 52912 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

>>
>>59735454

>>
>>59735406
I don't think there's much difference between the two since the two below are implicit in those above. I believe cstate is one tool in the conntrack module which allows you to track packets. NEW, RELATED, ESTABLISHED is basically all of them.
>>
>>59735678
Yep, that's mostly what I discovered. I'm trying to set up some tight iptables which allow me torrenting, but I think I'm missing something since once I lost like 10MB of download. I've been told just one peer port for torrent would be enough, but if I don't open 6.000-7.000 transmission won't connect right.
>>
>>59735402
Increasing the baseclock/busspeed is generally done for 2 reasons:
finetune your cpu OC to squeeze that little extra out of it
OC the ram over its tested speed
Depending on the application you use, higher ram speeds might matter more than higher cpu clocks but generally higher cpu clocks is the way to go.

I am required to chose a client and server framework for my web project. I know little to nothing about this at all and I don't know what the best options are (easiest, most userfriendly, the best/most common standard). If you could choose and explain why it would save me tons of time because I wouldn't have to read up on all of them. Here are some of their suggestions

client
>Angular
>Ember
>Aurelia
>React
>Vue
>Mercury

>Express.js

>Kemal
>KumuluzEE
>Lumen
>Nancy FX
>Ratpack
>Scalatra

much appreciated

Long story short, My co-worker is offering to sell this system to me that he built himself about a month ago for $850. seems as if he did his research and built it himself, but decided he didn't like gaming or something.

Anything in particular i should confirm before buying it? i already ran some benchmarks and such, everything seems fine so far except for this radical temperature on the mobo. What would cause that? it's a mini-itx mobo with a 7700k in a compact fractal case. Ram seems to have defaulted to 1333, but it's actually 16gb of 2666mhz.

I'm taking it for a "test drive" right now in my lab before i make a decision.

You just choose a fixed port for peer torrent, then add rules to the 6000-7000 port range (bitTorrents common ports) for TCP AND UDP, in both ingoing and outgoing. It should fine.

In the case of a global internet outage, could you potential create a "new" internet specific to your own country's borders? What would you need to do this?

My babby tier understanding is that the internet itself is entire connected by ISPs so I guess ultimately I'm asking if a private national ISP is possible, a network exclusive to a country.

I've been given a Windows 10 tablet, so may as well make use of it. I've tried a few web browsers - Firefox is slow and has poor touchscreen support. Chrome seems to work best, but has an annoying bug where it will stop responding to touchscreen input.

Anyway, I want to install Chromium, but the mini installer seems to install it to the app data folder. I came across this site which shows how to install it 'properly' Iin the Program Files folder through the command prompt - https://martinrotter.github.io/it-programming/2016/07/17/install-chromium-system-wide-windows/

I do the above, and command prompt tells me mini-installer.exe --system-level is not recognized as an internal or external command.

Having tried both the Oculus and the Vive, I can tell you that VR right now is mostly a curiosity for people who can afford to throw money at it.

Any low-end VR is going to be so crap that however little you spend on it, it's going to be overpriced.

High-end VR (so like the Vive) is much, much better, it's actually an enjoyable experience, but there are still noticeable quality defects - not enough to get in your face, but definitely enough to notice, especially if you play for a while. For the current price, I'd say it's also not worth it - wait a bit until the next iteration; as a bonus, the hardware required to run it will also become much more accessible.

Ah, testing is probably the only legitimate use case for VR right now.

You could always upgrade your phone, since that's also useful for a lot of other things. If you get a Samsung you could even use Gear VR, it's no Vive but for the price it's probably going to be at least decent.

Did you try reseating the cable? Check for pin breakage and if that's the case then you might need to pull them out of the socket. Obviously do this while the PC is off and unplugged. If your borked the cable then that's not a biggie, just use another one, unless it's hardwired into the monitor in which case you're fucked unless you want to solder a new end on.

Plug displayport instead

I have no idea what that means

BUT, if you're just trying to rename all your pictures, just write a script. Off the top of my head, it would go like this:
for every file in the directory
while (generate a 4chan-like string of numbers) matches an existing file
loop
rename the file to the generated string (which will be unique)

Ugly pseudocode because I haven't scripted in shell for months, I don't have one to test in right now, and I can't even be certain you're on Linux (and I absolutely can't into windows scripts).

Wherever you can access these variables, you can print them.

If you're passing them to your function which then returns the products, then you could just print them before passing to the function.

If they're only inside the scope of that function (either local to that function, or defined on the level of the object whose function you're calling) then you need some other way. You could return them from that function together with the product (use an array or something), or you could print them out from within the function, yeah.

Unless you mean just from l33t haxors, I'd say Apple is still probably the best, simply due to the fact that they lock down so much stuff that, as a side-effect of everything being unusable, it's also unexploitable.

That's my conflict. I always flipflop between Android and iPhone.
While apps run about the same on both now, there are still some that run smoother on iOS.
Although, Android is more customizable and better integrated into the Google ecosystem, which is definitely better than Apple's.

So it's a draw on everything for me, but security. I can use something like a VPN on Android, but not iPhone. Although, iOS seems to offer more encryption.

Ok so basically Android is based on Linux. Root it and you essentially have a Linux distro you can do anything with AFAIK.

That means you can encrypt it, manually set up the firewall, and generally set it up to be really secure.

BUT, you can also fuck things up if you're not careful. Apple protects you form yourself. A fair number of exploits also rely on user error - remember the screencap of the guy who got ransomware on his gentoo, because he was running Firefox with Flash as root? Also think of all the exploits which rely on tricking the user to confirm something, or open some file, etc. By preventing you from doing anything like that, Apple also prevents all these exploits from working.

From a user-less exploit point of view (very technical term, I know), I'd say they're about par; I'm not an expert on that.iOS is completely closed-source though so that's something to keep in mind.

Hey /sqt/, I have a problem that's driving me bananas.

I've got an expensive optical ergo mouse. Can't use regular mice due to permanent bone damage.

One of them started jittering rapidly across the screen like there was a hair/fuzz in the sensor. I have ripped this thing down to the circuit board and cleaned the optical portion four times, and even pulled out the prism and cleaned that.

Every time I think that it's working again it starts to jitter. Is the sensor just FUBAR'd? The circuitry, maybe? Do these things actually fail or is there some elusive piece of fuzz that no amount of cleaning can remove?

I've also tried a fresh mouse pad and USB cable to no avail.

If a pop-up on the internet ever tells you that you have a virus, or anything else about your computer for that matter, it's lying.

I don't really know how to do it, but I'm pretty sure you can set up a VPN at the router level (probably google it.)

But a lot of the time routers can't handle decrypting stuff fast enough (because it's not really their job) and so your internet connection will be slower than if you'd just used software.

as far as the basic go;
panel types;
LCD: cheaper, no burn-in risk, lower contrast. note that "LED" tv's are just LCD with LED backlights, i'm not sure if they even make CCFL backlight displays anymore, but if they do, LED is better
OLED: more expensive, burn-in is a possibility, so be careful if you plan to use it with PC input, contrast is amazing, best picture you can currently get

HDR/SDR;
"HDR" refers to having a wider range of brightness levels than older "SDR" displays, there's two competing standards for it, HDR10, an open standard, and Dolby Vision

"Smart";
basically just a regular TV but with additional hardware akin to a tablet or phone integrated into it, allowing for things like netflix to be supported directly by the TV alone

Curved;
looks neat, but doesn't really look much different at normal viewing distances, looks weird when viewed off-angle (aka, people watching who aren't directly in front of it)
i'm pretty sure they did this because Because They Can(tm)
>>
>>59741376
4k, 3D, Curved =Memes

240hz is a meme, for video most people don't even like 60 (soap opera effect)

Smart Tv is decent now, although you can get saddled with bloat, and there's no guarantee they'll update indefinitely. Also surprisingly weak security

1440p is a decent upgrade from 1080, but doesn't scale 1080p content as well as 4k

IPS is good, HDR is better. HDR basically resolves the shittieness of image quality manufactures have been retardedly ignoring for years.
>>
>>59741568
oh, to clarify HDR a little;
it's not related to the basic brightness level that you'd set yourself, but rather the absolute difference in brightness between black and white
it also requires HDR content to take advantage of it, so don't expect "SDR"/existing content to look much different

Why isn't Windows Search indexing new files? I only have it index my start menu, but it's not indexing anything new I put it in there. The shortcuts appear in the start menu itself, but even rebuilding the search index doesn't make it so it indexes these files.
It indexes everything else though, so I'm not sure what's going wrong.
>>
>>59741588
I'd just like to interject that while 240Hz may be a meme (also where do you even find 240Hz), 120/144Hz does make a very noticeable difference.

If you use a PC with it even your mouse pointer and webpage scrolling will become visibly smoother. Games will of course benefit quite a bit.

In the end it's a compromise on picture specs (resolution, refresh frequency), picture quality (colors, contrast) and price.
>>
>>59741568
>>59741588
>>59741632
So I basically want 1080p, non-curved with HDR? I could do without a smart TV since I already have a Roku but I don't think they make regular old dumb TVs now.
>>
>>59741692
Ground yourself frequently and don't work in a static-creating environment.

This means:
>wooden surfaces (no carpets!)
>cotton clothes (no synthetics!)
>try not to rub things in general
And for grounding, you will need something metal and grounded. Depending on your socket/country you can just touch the grounding pin there, otherwise you might need to find something else.

If you wanna feel safer, get an anti-static wristband and clip it to the aforementioned metal grounded object. This might make outlets harder to utilise because most bands seem to come with a crocodile clip IIRC. They cost like $5-10 and let you not worry about grounding yourself often enough, since you're constantly grounded.
>>
>>59741718
pretty much, even if you have no need for HDR, it is at least indicative of decent contrast in general
>>
>>59741376
HDR is really the only feature in the last 10 years I would give a shit about, provided you get content for it. The normal color spectrum of screens is very limited, which is why professional photo editors tend to use special monitors expanded to the full sRGB range. Standardizing HDR content is actually the easy way out, and luckily providers are starting to step up to the plate, including the PS4. It's laughable that everyone thinks 4k is a big deal when most modern tvs still have so much more to gain from a better color specrum

>>59741718
Yup. No real advantage to a smart tv over a roku, and the panel itself will probably be good long after the "smart" features start showing their age
>>
>>59741776
i guess higher resolution is just easier to explain than HDR
looking at a normal/large-size (say 50-65") tv from a normal distance (say 5-10 metres), with fully exploitative content on both, and a 1080p HDR display will have looks much better than a 4K SDR display
HDR is more important for picture quality in more situations than 4K
it's easy to go "but look how SHARP it is!" when looking at a 4K tv from 2 feet away displaying a still image, but how often to you do that in practice?

No. 1080p is already on its way out. Get 2160p to future-proof your device a bit.
Also, protip: 4k ≠ 2160p. Actual 4k is extremely rare because it's a nonstandard aspect ratio.

when talking about consumer gear, it can be assumed that we're talking about 3840x2160

also, differentiating them by calling one "2160p" is no less confusing, considering they're both 2160 lines progressive (2160p)

there is progression to be had besides resolution, such as SDR>HDR and LCD>OLED, which both bring far more to the table picture-quality-wise than UHD

So when my ram usage reaches 100%, instead of programs crashing or being killed my computer just freezes up; X unresponsive, alt+f4 doesn't kill shit, etc. Is there some program or daemon I can acquire that will kill whatever is sucking up all the memory before everything goes unresponsive forcing me to reboot?
>>
>>59742031
What are you trying to learn? What projects are you working on?
My rule of thumb would be that you're too dumb to learn programming if you decide on a reasonable task and find yourself to be too unintelligent to solve it, even with access to the internet.
>>
>>59742063
It's actually not frozen, believe it or not; it's just extremely slow. Your computer is designed to use secondary memory (your HDD) once it runs out of primary memory (your RAM). The computer appears frozen because a HDD is many orders of magnitude slower than even low-quality RAM. If you give it enough time (assuming a program isn't stuck in an infinite loop) then it will start responding all on its own.

But you could probably write a simple program to check every few seconds if a process is using an unreasonably high amount of memory (you'd have to decide this yourself) and kill it in the event that it detects one.
>>
>>59742125
Idk man at >30seconds for any change on the screen I'd call it pretty frozen.

I don't really have any particular goal, except maybe to make my own roguelike one day just for fun. I started learning it after a friend told me to give it a try, then later had the idea to use python to automate my math homework so I started toying around making functions for different formulas. I like that feeling of finally getting it to work right, and I like breaking down problems. I've just been going through various python tutorials and then doing the exercises. I have had some times where I got caught up, but so far I've always managed to figure out everything in the end. But I'm also still on basic shit, so that's not impressive.

Literally unfixed since 2007 at least fucking hell.
>>
>>59742164
>But seriously why isn't this already in place?
Two reasons that it wouldn't be a default part of a system.
1.) It's an uncommon scenario, so it would use up company resources on something that basically no one would ever use
2.) It would potentially interfere with enterprise programs that use high amounts of memory.
>>
>>59742242
>This has also happened to me on many occasions. I have a Kubuntu 9.04 server at the office that has 24GB of main memory, so there is no swap space defined. When an application goes haywire and takes all the main memory (e.g. VMWare), the offending process is never terminated, the mouse pointer locks up, and all attempts at a remote SSH session fail--the server has to be forcibly restarted.
>This is a critical bug!
Some guy, 2009.

>It would potentially interfere with enterprise programs that use high amounts of memory.
And the computer essentially running like treacle, potentially undetected for hours, this wouldn't be a problem?
>>
>>59742224
I'd give you two pieces of advice. First is to pirate a textbook for whichever language you're interested in. Ignore the actual chapters in the book, they're largely worthless. What you want to do is go to the programming challenges and solve those. I say this because they almost always have a good progression that builds on previous knowledge and ensures that you firmly understand the fundamentals as you learn.
Next, start drawing up design documents for simple games and spend some time each day trying to make it.
Your first several "games" will be utter shit, so only start to worry if you spend a very long time and still feel like you don't understand anything.

>HDR basically resolves the shittieness of image quality manufactures have been retardedly ignoring for years.

the hdr label is a meme.

it's basically 3 things:
Content level: A video mastered with higher contrast ratio (couldnt be done with normal video)

signal level: a 10-12 bit signal to reduce banding and improve color accuracy

panel level: A high contrast color accurate panel (to unspecified levels) (cold be done with normal video)

TL;DR HDR could already be done with previous decent panels and video, just with a risk of banding. is just a good panel that supports 10bit to reduce banding, but the panel is gimped when not getting a HDR standard(tm) signal.
