/g/'s long trusted containment thread for stupid shit. If you see stupid shit cluttering the board, redirect it here.

Googling your question before asking it here is encouraged, but as the name suggests it's not required.

Don't bump your question, you're not entitled to an answer. Wait for the next thread if you have to.

Can someone recommend me a good office chair?

Must be able to tilt/recline

Walmart has these racing bucket office chairs for like 80 bucks, but I don't know if I want to fall for that fad, or just get something more traditional.

My dad wants a new laptop. He's got this old ass medion laptop right now, but it's starting to fail.

His only demands are that it has windows 10 since he's used to it and can function as a facebook/youtube machine, for about 500 euro or less. I have almost zero knowledge of laptops these days, so if anyone can point me in the direction of a good brand/kind or even just tell me what I need to avoid, it would be very much appreciated. .

Anyway as far as I can tell I've tweaked affinity and everything well enough. RAM allocation is not a problem at all (32GB allocated to the virtual machine in question and Java's only touching 2GB of the 16 I gave it).

I suppose I'll have to find some other CPU intense application to test on here to ensure it's a Java issue and not a Hyper-V one

don't bother with shitty oversold vps providers if you don't explicitly need them, use a service like nearlyfreespeech.net or heroku or some other pay as you go web service, if you do get a vps get one from a reputable company and acknowledge that it's still going to be oversold on a bad network

I've had some of those stupidly cheap $13/year vpses before, what they don't tell you is that they're probably not going to stick around for the next 6-12 months and if they do you can expect hwraid failures and rip your data - and when they're back up it's on an even more oversold machine than the one you were just on

not quite, you get ssh access and can run some processes but you usually use their software/services (php, ruby, python, mariadb, etc)

I'm looking to buy a workstation laptop. My top choice would be a thinkpad p50 (or the p51 that's about to come out), but i can't find a good configuration for cheap.
Instead, I found this HP Pavilion that seems to tick most boxes, except for lack of ports: https://us.hardware.info/product/382225/hp-pavilion-15-bc235nd-z5e75ea/specifications. Does anyone have experience with this model line? Are there any known issues? Is it reliable? I'm hoping it'll last 5+ years.
Thanks.

I was actually somewhat joking, but I do know a pentester friend who lives in the country and needed an antenna for longer distances and he opted to try one of these

they're supposed to be for wifi but the usual rules for cheap chinese shit apply, it's probably not great for wifi and you get what you pay for and even if it's bottom of the barrel cheap shit there's probably a knock off or two here and there ruining the reputation of the product

that said, if you do go that route keep in mind that it's going to need to be ran at a stupidly high gain so best practices are to not stand in front or behind the antenna for prolonged periods, and you will almost certainly be breaking local laws on antenna output so be weary

So I´m looking to buy a 4K tv and browsing the web I found various sites that calculate the "ideal" size of the tv depending on the viewing distance

Unless you're planning on hosting the website off your computer, you have to contract a web host as well - just a web domain won't do. Hiring a web host sometimes comes with a domain bundled and a discount, so you might wanna look around carefully. There should be a simple interface where you can upload your files.

Unless you need a lot of bandwidth, this is a good idea anyway, especially for experimenting. It's free, you have full control over everything, you learn some stuff about administrating a server and networking and you can still use a domain if you want.

Why is SSH a more secure protocol than TELNET?
>>
>>59724806
iirc the default idle-spindown in windows is 10 minutes, though often these kinds of commands don't translate over USB, and these are handled internally by the enclosures' circuit, which could be anything

i am assuming you've disabled the windows idle spindown feature? i suppose you might not have needed to previously if you have no internal disks that aren't constantly being used (single, system drive?)

No I don't think I will need a lot unless it has lots of traffic, which probably wont happen anytime soon at least. Does the computer have to be on permanently though? Like how does that work?
>>
>>59724859
Was sure I had but checked again and I had it set to turn off hard disks after 20 minutes, now it's set not to. Wonder if that was the problem all along and not the enclosure... Though I think I've had it happen in less than 20 minutes before.
>>
>>59724890
well, you could set it to 1 minute to see if the disk responds to it
though it's still not impossible that the enclosures' controller might still impose an upper limit
perhaps just turn it off, and if it spins down again, setup a task to keep it busy
>>
>>59724881
You will only be able to access your website when it's on. If you want to run it 24/7 you may want to consider some low power device like a raspberry pi.

It's not really suitable for anything serious, but it should be good enough for just experimenting and learning stuff.
>>
>>59724881
>Does the computer have to be on permanently though? Like how does that work?
Yes. The server software runs on the computer. If the computer shuts off, the server software shuts down and your site gets pulled off the web.

By the way, I don't recommend that you host it at your own home/work computer, because there may be a lot of security issues that might put yourself at risk. Use a spare computer instead, preferably running GNU/Linux, that you can leave on all the time. You have to make sure your ISP is OK with outgoing traffic on port 80, the default port for websites. Some ISPs block those.
>>
>>59724971

Worst case, people won't be able to reach your website over the internet and you can always use a different port.

Also, running a local server that's not connected to the internet can be useful for testing a website. You can still run server side scripts like php, which you can't do by just opening HTML files with your browser, but you don't need to worry about security, ports or anything like that.

Malwarebytes is some of the best non enterprise AVs you can get for free, their paid version is really good but some think is not worth it.

>>
>>59725875
Yeah I guess that's easy enough for now.

Though it still seems silly to me that I can't echo to a file from tasksched
>>
>>59726025
while i'm not sure this is really relevant, you can't use "echo" directly outside of a shell in linux, either, since "echo" is a shell built-in, not a separate program, not to mention you're probably also using a shell redirect (>) to output into a file (echo something > file)
in linux, you can work around this by calling the shell with the command as it's argument, like "bash -c 'echo something > file'"
>>
>>59725986
No experience with them. MediaTemple used to be all right until Godaddy bought them and they started gouging you for money like there's no tomorrow. Liked their control panel and 100GB of space though.

Siteground is good and has great support if you need it, but they use cPanel and it belongs in the fucking 90's. Also their space limits are pretty low if it matters to you, it's 30GB on the highest shared server option. But I'll be sticking with them for the time being, haven't found a better option for myself in this price bracket.
>>
>>59726078
Ah, turns out that worked great. When I put cmd /c "echo AAAA > WRITEFILE" it did exactly what I wanted.

I have a main system, this is for fun/learning:

Recently, I found a PC in the e-waste bin at my university:
An intel core 2 Duo running win 7 professional. It runs great and I'm using it now.

Today, I found Pic related, in addition to about 5 other older graphics cards in there.

Question:
Will this thing give me any benefit in performance if I plug it into my computer? Or could it make it worse from whatever on-board graphics it currently has?

It appears to be a 256Mb Pegatron ATI Radeon HD 3450 E317539

I used Avast since forever and so far this is the first time it's failed me. And back when I started using it was the best free AV according to many independent testers. I'm guessing things have changed since then, and admittedly I'm slow and reluctant to change stuff when the current solution has worked for me for years.

Anyway, what's the best free AV these days? I don't want any other shit with it like firewall, just a real-time AV.

>>59725977
Of course.
>>
>>59726675
I was simply reinforcing that anon had already specified what he was going to be using the laptop for.

Though I do have a bit of a bias against gaming laptops due to my experience with a couple of them degrading into thermal-throttling heaps of garbage within just a couple years with no fix in sight.

Thanks for the feedback. On thing I was thinking:
The C2D computer doesn't have an HDMI output. So If I installed this GC, I would have the benefit of continuing to use my VGA monitor, but I could also concurrently hook up an unused HDMI TV to it. I just really do not want to potentially further reduce the performance of this pc?
How should I go about quantifying the performence differences of these two graphics setups? Is there a standard benchmark I can perform for each system to compare overall performance? I would just like to prove to myself that I am not reducing the performance of this system.

Tried downloading a program to take a screenshot but that gets the same result.

What is happening? I'm getting annoyed because it's seems stupid to me that this is happening.

You are missing a heatsink fan, based in your case either get a Noctua D15 or a NH-U14S.

No, performance will drop or the program wont run at all.

With the Intel IGPU it will run slow but will just take more RAM so it can open the program.
IIRC C2D IGPU limit is somewhat around 1.7GB.

386, 486, etc. also it's not x64 it's x86_64
>>

x86 comes from the names of the original chips in the series, the intel 8086 and related chips such as the later 286, 386, 486 models. The x64 or x86_64 name was chosen as a compromise between the AMD64 and Intel 64 names each manufacturer used for pretty much the same thing.
