I'm new to phones. Are different ROMs like branches of the base Android OS? When Android updates from 10.1 to 10.2.1 do the different ROMs apply those updates to their branch? Using a custom ROM like LineageOS wont mean that I'm foregoing security updates, rather the opposite, I'll get more frequent updates as carriers abandon their branches after a year or so right?

Mostly used for browsing the web and playing some random gachi card game.
Budget is less then 500 dollar preferred but its essentially unlimited if the phone is worth the extra money.
Currently have a Galaxy S4 and would enjoy something a little larger but not mini tablet sized.

If I buy a Xiaomi phone and it's got the global rom + playstore flashed to it, does that mean that the bootloader is unlocked or no?

Just curious as unlocking the bootloader on newer Xiaomi devices (specifically the Redmi Note 4X) seems like it's prone to errors and not always successful. It would be easier to get a phone with an unlocked bootloader because I would be flashing shit ASAP (don't want to deal with MIUI)
>>
>>59727579
It varies. If you do your research you can find plenty of chinkphones with partial or full LTE support on AT&T/T-Mobile. LeEco, BLU, and most Huawei phones have full support for bands 2-4-5-12. The Redmi Note 3 has 2-4-5 but other Xiaomis have just band 5 or possibly no American LTE bands at all. A lot of them have multiple versions as well, which just makes it harder.

The G5 works on all the American networks, even the CDMA ones, so it's idiot-proof.

Do you need compatibility with all bands for it to work properly in a certain country or just at least one of them, or does that depend on region/state?
>>
>>59723816
Ok get a Sony they do compact
>>
>>59727814
Depends on where you are and your carrier. T-Mobile uses bands 2, 4, and 12, but they mainly rely on band 4. AT&T uses 2, 4, 5, and 12/17, and they mainly use bands 5 and 12/17. Fewer compatible bands just means you'll be more likely to drop to 3G, which is usually still fine. It's just you don't want to drop a ton of cash on a phone that won't get 4G very often. So I tend to recommend phones that are fully compatible.

The CDMA carriers (Sprint and Verizon) are entirely their own beasts and don't work at all with international phones.

Moto G5 would be fine, or anything else with a Snapdragon 625. The Moto Z Play has just about the best battery life you can get right now and it uses the 625 too. The G5 has a smaller battery than the Z but it's still good.

The Redmi Note 4 would have been perfect with a 625 and a massive battery but it's not fully compatible with US 4G bands.

GMOs are much higher in heavy metals, herbicides, and insectisides. Both applied afterwards, and generated by the crop itself. They are objectively bad for you, and it's about as up for discussion as if eating mercury is "fine" for you. Modern day GMOs are trash. You are defending a pathetic waste of potential rigged for massive profits at the expense of all else. Grow up.

Vaccines, because they're given so close together and along with the adjuvants (which are neurotoxic), provoke sucha potent immune response, probably do contribute to neurological problems. Autism is well known to occur alongside chronic inflammation of the microglia, which would without a doubt affect synaptogenesis, dendritic spine formation and arborization. cell differentiation, and the overall chemistry of the brain. This is basic neuroscience, the immune system is intimately linked with brain function.

Microwaves, especially when they're pulsed, activate voltage gated calcium channels. Chronically elevated intracellular calcium that isn't properly trafficked out of the cell leads to increased NO synthesis, which reacts with superoxide and increases the rate of peroxynitrite formation, greatly. And speaking of autism, look up "Timothy Syndrome", a polymorphism of the genes that generate VGCCs which causes them to be overactive, which universally causes autism, immune, and cardiac problems.

Stop parroting and read a book. There is plenty of literature on this dating back as far as the 60's. You're only 40 years behind the curve.

As above.

Many species have a much worse time with this than humans, such as amphibians, reptiles, certain insects like bees and butterflies, and many species of birds. We know very well what aberrant activation of voltage gated calcium channels generally causes. How does it activate them? It interacts with their voltage sensing subunit, which is composed of charge groups that all need to be moved the same direction at close to the same time. If you know anything about physics and electricity, you know why their location in the plasma membrane (phospholipid bilayer) would make this very probable. Experiments show instantaneous influx of Ca2+ when exposed to microwave fields.

>>59728866
There is no evidence to the contrary that didn't use cell types either in very specific phases, or that are know to be non-reactive / low in L-type VGCC expression. This has been established thoroughly. Exposure to microwaves causes a mess of double and single strand breaks, as well as degradation of other cellular machinery.

>>
>>59728524
You've got a few of those right. Some vaccines do cause autism, there is a direct link. GMOs are really bad for you.

As for climate change, we have a roughly 100000 year cycle with 20000 year sub-cycle. The question you should be asking is why global UN taxes would have any impact what so ever on the sun and the earths orbit around it.

>>59728414
>Daily reminder that cell phones, wi-fi, bluetooth, smart meters, etc, cause cancer, brain damage, psychiatric problems, and infertility.
One sad little detail is that most of what you complain about, wifi, bluetooth and smart meters are measured in mW and are barely measurable compared to GSM/3G/4G which is measured in watts. A wifi router is typically just a few feet away while the nearest cell phone tower is several kilometers away. Yet you're able to turn wifi and bluetooth off but you'll have a hard time bringing down that big solid metal cell phone tower. There's not really that many good options there, perhaps a lot of RDX or C4 and some thermite could help...
>>
Gotta go. Give it some thought, the cost of a cell phone might be a lot higher than your outrageous monthly bill that's detestably out of proportion with real world operating and expansion costs.

>>
>>59729226
>USB-C is a new requirement for me going forward. I've had too many phones with worn out micro USB ports.

uhmm... I have a worthless NEET brother who invites himself too frequently. He brings his XBox along and connects it to one of my computer monitors. Now none of my 3 computer monitors don't have a working HDMI port (which honestly isn't a bad thing since I use DP and DVI and it prevents that child from playing his XBox). One obvious question is: Would it be the DP ports on those who were broken if the XBox came with only a DP port?

I know, broken USB micro ports are a problem. But are broken USB-C ports ... better? Sure, you probably can't plug a USB-C cable into a USB-C port backwards while drunk and break it, but you could try to force a micro USB into a USB-C port and break it..
>>
>>59729277
Moto G first gen, Galaxy S4, and Moto G3. They all still work they're just loose. Now it's making me question whether I had a bad cable that did damage to the ports. I'm careful with my phones, I don't yank them or drop them.
>>
>>59729350

Oh okay, if it's just loose I can understand. My Q10 port isn't loose itself, but the way the cable sits in it is. I never have trouble with it failing to charge or transfer data though, and I figure it's directly connected to me accidentally tugging the phone by the cord a few times.

I don't see how USB C would avert this problem though. Surely only the magnetic cables seen in macbooks/surface/xperia z3's would prevent this issue?

I had a Nokia N70 that last me seven years; I got a Galaxy S4, that is now close to four years old, because although still completely functional some of the N70 buttons stopped working. I had CM13 probably. I installed it in october on my Nexus 4.
I was now trying to install CM 14.1. Just want to sell this phone.

I went into recovery mode wiped everything and I've reseted to factory settings too.

My laptop doesn't see the device so I can't put a rom on it.

for those who want something which isn't a chinkshit which sends your data to china, but isn't either too overpriced, I suggest ASUS Zenfone 3 (models ZE520KL or ZE552KL, respectively 5.2" and 5.5"). For 300 $ I think it's the best flagship phone you can get, great camera, hardware is absolutely decent, but it's the ASUS firmware that makes the difference, it's the only stock firmware that made me not cringe, very optimized and smooth. And it's also thin and nice design-wise unlike the clunky Zenfone 2.

One of the best things that ever happened to me was having my Galaxy S3 die on me. At the time I thought "oh I will just wait till the S7 comes out" and went back to using my old Blackberry 9300 as a "temporary" phone. And I found that, not only did I miss the physical keyboard, but 95% of the time I just used a Smartphone for texts, music, email and calls. The only thing I really missed on the 9300 was occasional, casual Web browsing to get information while on the go. So instead of blowing all kinds of money on an S7, I just bought a used Blackberry Classic unlocked for $150 and couldn't be happier. I have been toying with the idea of getting a KeyOne but it looks huge and I vastly prefer BBOS 10 to Android.

First smartphone was a Palm Pre that I got before heading to university in 2009. It was also the first and last phone that I bought on contract.

There was so much I wanted to love about it because WebOS was fucking comfy as hell, but the build quality on that thing was nothing short of atrocious. The sliding keyboard became loose and jiggly and eventually would only stay open if you held it in a certain position, the headphone jack stopped working after about 16 months (had to buy a SanDisk Sansa, which sort of defeats the purpose of having a Smartphone to play music), the keyboard would sometimes enter two characters when you only typed one, the glass somehow cracked even though I never ever dropped it, and the coup De grace was when the unit just plain didn't power on any more, with a year left on my contract. I ended up buying a used Blackberry 8520 (which thankfully worked on Rogers) and used that for a while. No idea what Palm's quality was like before, but if it was anything close to that then they deserved to die.

>>

>>
>>59734898
I don't make long calls often, that's true, but even just keeping the phone in your hands or pockets (or close to the genitalia) is not the best for our health. If it's not brain cancer, it's cancer elsewhere. And the headset seems to act as an antenna and make things almost as bad (haven't researched in a while on this specific matter and may be wrong). Not to talk about bluetooth ones, you have to be sure they're the safest class or they're basically as bad as keeping your phone close to your head.

It's not that I want to be a damper saying "woo your phones are evil and give you cancer!", it just annoys me how companies are ignoring users' health and users are caring less and less about it.

From my understanding, the SAR rating is not the only determinant of radiation emission, there are many other factors. Low SAR ratings do not necessarily mean that one phone will be less cancerous than another.

As an anecdote, my mom is very sensitive to electromagnetic radiation, and found that she was getting more headaches from the supposedly low-SAR Galaxy S2 than she was from her company-issued Blackberry Classic, which has a very high SAR rating. They are both on the same network so it's not like it's a GSM/CDMA difference.

>>59734968
>users are caring less and less about it

This sort of annoys me. I brought up the issue of radiation emissions when my girlfriend was looking for a new phone a few months ago, not only did she not consider it but she actually got mad at me for bringing it up, and just bought the Huawei she wanted. In her case it's not an issue of caring / not caring, she just does not want to know.

See? That really pisses me off. And as you say SAR is not the only rating, but why no one is caring about making some better resources about the radiation levels of phones? They'll get informed on everything except that one. Anyway I too am really sensitive to radiations (can tell you if there are wifi connections around just by the feeling of it) and my S3 felt fine having few SAR, compared to other phones, but it may only be a coincidence.

But the most important thing is: SAR or not, why should someone want a Huawei? In my country retarded people buy them just because they have a lot of advertising to them.

My girlfriend is Chinese so she bought Huawei because she has always had one and China Strong.

Also for the record, Chinese are laughably easy to troll. One of her friends wouldn't talk to me for weeks because I said that China and Taiwan were two de facto independent states, and another friend of hers now hates me because I said Chinese phones had terrible build quality (doesn't matter if I levy the same insult against Samsung and LG; must not insult glorious China). This apparently makes me a horrible racist Russian. The point is, though, maybe it is not a general consumer attitude, maybe it is just a Mandarin thing.

Just broke my Z3, front screen smashed and took the digitizer with it. I can get it repaired for about £70, but I can get a used, working one off ebay for only a little more than that. I don't wanna get a flagship again, my Z3 was massively overpowered for my needs right up until I broke it. I'm looking at G5+ but it's not out in the UK yet.

Pixel for pure Android, fast software updates
Downsides: Expensive, large bezels

OnePlus 3T for flagship quality at 2/3rds the price
Downsides: slightly slower official software updates than pixel

The above two phones both have a SD821, so it might be worth waiting until around June when more SD835 phones are released.

I wouldn't get the S8 since it's a Samsung and the software is still bloated (including a dedicated hardware button for their superfluous software assistant Bixby).

Personally I'm holding out for Nokia announcing their flagship which is expected in Q2. Might also get an Xperia to run Sailfish OS on.

It mentions smething about fastboot flashing lock, I don't think I need to do this as I'll be installing CM14.1

Don't relock bootloader if you're planning to flash a custom rom. You'll need to flash TWRP again in fastboot. Boot into android and enable usb debugging in developer settings before flashing a custom rom. Is CM14.1 even supported anymore? Why not flash LineageOS?

GF's Smartphone broke down.
she needs a new one, requirements:
>Android
>small, below 5" screen diagonal
>long battery life
>below 200 €uroshekels
>not used
>hardware almost unimportant. Mostly social media, lotsa music and staying connected on commutes

So far have been looking at the Moto G 3, the Sony E5 and XA1, and some obscure thing called the BLU Studio Energy 2, but of that one we haven't had a look at the display, so can't confirm whether it will give her eyecancer

Any notes on these contestants or new entry?

New entry: Moto G5 or Nokia 5
It has a 5 inch display but it's not as shitty as the 4 you proposed.
>>
Looking for my first smartphone. I use a Nokia brick and a Thinkpad still, I don't know shit about smartphones really except that I should probably flash it with LineageOS if supported.

It should be GSM/SIM card based.

The only features I want are a very good camera, decent battery life, GPS support, and cheapness, <200€. Don't really need any processing power whatsoever besides GPS map rendering.

Currently considering:

>Moto G4/5
>Blu Life One
>Asus Zenfone 2/3

Any other ideas? I'd use a Docomo Lumix phone if it weren't for needing maps. Thanks.

I guess I should have mentioned that size kinda matters here. she'Äs coming 4,3" phone and she needs to be able to fit it in her pockets, not her purse. 5" is kinda more like the absolute upper.
Those are still nice phones tho.

That's bad then. Galaxy a3 2016 maybe. Although I don't really like Samsung. X compact could be an option too if she is willing to pay 290 euros.

The G5/+ is a great phone even with the 2GB RAM
>Blu Life One
The original or the 2? I had the two and it's a decent phone but I had issues with trying to use anything that used the recaptcha API natively, including Clover, on LTE, it just wouldn't work and BLU denied there was anything wrong
>Asus Zenfone
Had a 2 and liked it when running on CM12.1, but it developed phantom touching due to a design flaw but the 3 looks nice

I just got a ZTE Blade V8 Pro (which shows as a ZMAX 3 in CPU-Z) and it's been great so far and is near your price range

Is there any app that just triggers the menu or something?

I'm on a Zuk Z2 and want to trigger the menu in apps by using the home button. Since you can open apps using the home button I figured there's gotta be an app out there that solely triggers the menu...

Or is this doable in Tasker somehow?

Question about memory and battery. How much does a full-to-mostly-full SD card influence battery life? I know battery performance is affected by the amount of apps, but does that apply to storage in general? i.e. if I have minimal apps, but a lot of my storage is taken up by photos and music, would that have the same effect on the battery if it were taken up by apps instead? How does external memory affect battery performance?
>>
>>59740248
>>59740280
Thank you, I've been looking at the G5 (plus doesnt seem like it's worth the almost 50% higher price) and the P2, will take a look at the Zuk and wileyfox now!
>>
>>59740284
photos, music and other 'dormant' information doesn't affect battery life if your battery management is good and you run things like greenify, forcedoze, and manage your wakelocks properly. botnet apps like QuickPic, facebook, instagram, etc, will constantly call upon your phone to scan it for new shit -- but only if you're not taking any action to keep these apps from doing so. you can always 'freeze' botnet apps until you explicitly open them yourself.

having lots of apps will very likely affect your battery life a lot more, unless of course you're managing them very well.

Thanks, bro it worked.

>>
>>59741194
Vast majority do not support the proper LTE frequencies used by Canadian carriers.

You want at a minimum Band 4 (rare in chinkphones), and ideally band 7 (common in chinkphonnes) and 12/17 depending on carrier.

Funny you had such a bad time with the Pre. My first smartphone was a Palm Pixi that I bought for stupid cheap in 2011 (like $40 unlocked), also when I started university. The camera was trash but otherwise the phone was 5/5 breddy gud, used it for two years. WebOS was the best, in many ways the S3 I eventually bought felt like a downgrade- UI was terrible and the stock TouchJizz Android slowed down noticeably after a few months, while the Pixi was still fairly zippy even years later. Never had any problems with durability or longevity.
>>
>>59736552

>>59739794
Opera. Not even joking. Quick and the data savings thing really works, cuts my data usage by about 40%.
>>

>What's the catch?
It's a Chinese smartphone made by Lenovo, and this particular line is all about high volume/low margin, it's a plus that it has specs as good as it does, but it's fixed store and the stock launcher looks like iOS with no app drawer, so first order after setting it up would be to get a new launcher
Also chinkphone rarely have support or software updates within 6 months after they're launched

Ok I'm getting the Oneplus 3t but I'm torn between 64gb and 128gb since I really dont use a lot of space on my phone other than music and maybe some pictures. >>
Fucking hell guys, Zuk Z2 is amazing.

Using Tasker, you can make the home button do basically anything..... re-customize it as a menu button, back button, app drawer button, quick panel button, pull out the notification bar, whatever.

>>
>>59723491
specs don't matter aslong as it has over 1 gig of memory it will work with all existing programs and will for a while
>>
>>59741634
Exactly.. the phone comes pre-fitted with some stock options, but most importantly, any action on the home button can be used to "Open app". This means you can create a basic system function with Tasker and export it as an app, then go into U-Touch settings and pick an action (for example, "Touch and hold" or "Double press"), then pick your exported Tasker app, and the home button will do whatever you want.

I'm currently using "Swipe left" to go back, "Swipe right" to open recent apps menu, "Touch and hold" opens the generic app menu, "Double press" pulls down notifications bar, and "Single press" goes back to home screen.

Nokia N95 8GB which I got in the 4th grade of elementary school.
It was already 2 years old (still a new phone though) by then, but considering I'm in eastern Europe it was decent... It took me about 2 months to crack it and install Quake 3.

In hindsight, I probably should've gotten a 3GS.

Mi5's a bit too expensive, if I were going to spend $300+ I'd go for a full fledged update to my 6S which is dying right now (cracked screen and dropping signal all the time)

I'm in a similar boat as this guy, but don't care for a physical keyboard anymore and prefer android. Had my LG G4 die on me (lol bootloop, fuck that phone) and I only really miss the snappier performance. Larger screens are nice, but I'm willing to sacrifice that for cost and ease of one-handed use. The most resource intensive app I use is Waze. What would be a good option? It's absurd to me how much more complicated this phone shit is than computers and Linux.
>>
>>59736747
SAR is irrelevant. Read my posts above (ctrl+f voltage gated calcium channel).

The actuality is, as yet, there is no safe cell phone. There just isn't. If it's a cell phone and you can interact with it, it's too close. If you can see it, it's too close. If you can conceive of it existing, it's hypothetically too close.

No one cares about anything. Everything is tribal, crowd psychology driven instant gratification hedonism. No one has any real sense of self or conception of the bigger picture, it's all feelings guided by their respective shepherds.
