Also, I'd change the grammar a little bit (not because it's wrong but rather that it's constructed in a way that it doesn't really feel natural).

dont have a bavarian but here is a swiss version:

Ii möcht nur rasch öpis zwüschewörfä. Säb, wo du als Linux bezeichnisch, isch eigentlii GNU/Linux, odr wien ichs sit Neustem nenne, GNU plus Linux. Linux sälber isch keii Betriebssüschtem, sondern einfach ä witerii freii Komponente vomene vollumfänglich funktionstüchtigä GNU Süschtem, wo vo de GNU Kärnbibliotheke, Shell Utensilie und anderä wichtigä Süschtemkomponentä nützlich gmacht wird und as vollständiges OS darstellt, wies definiert wird vuu POSIX.

Okay, I've no idea where to look for a log of firefox.
Problem is, I'm trying to get the `watch with mpv' addon working. It doesn't want to start mpv with the video.
So I do the same when running firefox from the shell to look for an error message. And now it's working.
Running firefox again on its own, and it doesn't work any more.
So now I'm looking for some logs to see what could possibly be the culprit, since the addon _is_ working, but nothing relevant is found in /var/* and ~/.xsession-errors doesn't yield any results either.
What are some other places I could look for firefox logs? Or maybe someone knows what the fuck is going on and could tell me.

"root" means several things, it's good to familiarise yourself with them
1. the "root" user (aka superuser), this is similar to "administrator" or "system" in windows, it can do anything, only use it when you need to, if you log into a graphical session as root, you're doing it wrong
2. the folder "/root", this is the home folder of the user "root"
3. the root of the VFS, "/". this is the upper-most directory under which everything is located, while everything appears here, it's important to note that the VFS is virtual (hence the V), the contents is comprised of one or more real or virtual filesystem mounts

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
Mint Mate or Ubuntu Mate? I can't decide
>>
>>59727269
What I want is a distro that recognizes my array from the installer and doesn't jerk me around trying to install it there by making be start entering command line bullshit.

It's not about being non- standard, it's about automation.

I've used plenty of distros, I was just wondering if any of them are able to do what a windows installer can do in 3-4 clicks.
>>
>>59727336
You dont have an array, you have a software array, meaning its not portable and you will have to configure it on each and every install you ever go to.

Someone posted these instructions for compiling from source in another thread. Will this put me on the right track or is it a trick? Is it really this easy? People make a lot of fuss about compiling from source being difficult, idk this seems too easy.
>>
>>59727394
It's created through my BIOS. All I have to do is give windows a driver and it recognizes the array right from the installer.

Do you have any idea of a Linux distro that does that as easily, or are you just going to continue being condescending and reaffirm why the linux desktop is never going to reach the masses?

It is literally like 3 or 4 commands to make a RAID from empty drives/partitions.
1. zero out the superblocks (if you had an old array, don't need to with fresh)
2. --create, with the raid type you want specified
3. cat /proc/mdstat
4. not related to raid, but partition the space that now exists in /dev/md<number> that is your new raid

Just google "RAID arch wiki" or for an even easier time, "mdadm how to create raid X"

And if you don't see your RAID after a reboot or something, the command is "sudo mdadm --scan --assemble" to bring it online.

Mint, mainly for the Mint Menu (like the start menu, has a text search) and better defaults.

If I were you, I would download virtualbox and try a liveCD of both of them. Just click around a bit and whichever one you like more after a couple minutes, use that one.

Also I think Mint has more easily googleable support.

What's a minimal distro that has a large amount of software available, doesn't require me to build from source and doesn't use systemd? I want a lot of the AUR's packages, mostly fonts, gtk themes and stuff like that I'm too lazy to manually install. (As well as a few useful programs). Very new distro. Few users and developers. It has a decent amount of software, but is missing quite a lot compared to arch, fedora, Debian, Ubuntu and Gentoo. It has a new package manager which is quite inconvenient for new users imo. You'll get less support online because few people use it but the solus forums and irc are helpful. Updates are handled either from command line or with help of a graphical updater. It does look nice but lags a little if you have a shitty CPU or terrible integrated gpu. I'd just stick with Ubuntu gnome, Debian or something similar if you want nice looks. It's not really worth choosing an immature distro because of the looks, any distro can look however you want.

They're making a good effort it's just young and not really recommended for beginners because of what that entails. It's fine if you want to stick with only the packages that are in their relatively small repos but if you venture outside of that you're going to need to do more advanced things and if you run into any problems google isn't going to be much help since it isn't based on an existing distro.

No idea how people always connect copyleft licenses with "more restrictive", when the only "restriction" simply makes sure that software can't be motr restricted - while "less restrictive" licenses allow further restrictions.

At the end of the day you have more "restictive" proprietary when using a "less restictive" than using a "more restictive" copyleft license.

Your terminal emulator cannot be a desktop environment.
Your desktop environment consists of multiple programs, like a window manager, a file manager, a taskbar, a notification daemon, a program launcher, a wallpaper setter and other things.

What you want is an X11 session with nothing but a window manager that runs a terminal emulator on startup. Of course that's retarded and soon you'll realize that you want a taskbar, a wallpaper, notifications, a file manager and other utilities.
>>

systemd is a suite of basic building blocks for a Linux system. It provides a system and service manager that runs as PID 1 and starts the rest of the system. systemd provides aggressive parallelization capabilities, uses socket and D-Bus activation for starting services, offers on-demand starting of daemons, keeps track of processes using Linux control groups, maintains mount and automount points, and implements an elaborate transactional dependency-based service control logic. systemd supports SysV and LSB init scripts and works as a replacement for sysvinit. Other parts include a logging daemon, utilities to control basic system configuration like the hostname, date, locale, maintain a list of logged-in users and running containers and virtual machines, system accounts, runtime directories and settings, and daemons to manage simple network configuration, network time synchronization, log forwarding, and name resolution.

What's the go with Wayland and Xorg? If I'm using i3 as a WM do I need Xorg or can I use Wayland?

It's DNS servers and they work. There's a 99% chance that your distribution isn't using Google's by default. You have no idea what you're talking about. You also most likely use systemd, but you post retarded thoughts like this to feel smart for once in your life, by copying other people's edgy opinions since you deem them to be bold and you think it makes you appear knowledgeable. You go out of your way to get "triggered".
Kill yourself.

i3 is an X window manager. You cannot use it with Wayland.
Use Sway, which is very similar to i3, but is a Wayland compositor.

Nice idea. Combined with hashsum checks that only allow specific modules, moduled could even improve security.

Whatever you say, brosef.

Sure those DNS work, but their also Google's. I can't stand people that are just ok with being spied on because "lol I got nothing to hide"
I bet you also carry a smartphone around with you all day wherever you go and go on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram, are an avid user of various instant messengers and what not.

Wait, I confused this with the NTP "issue". Either way, the point still stands, it will be changed downstream by the distribution packagers.

RHEL. With Red Hat, you can get a full stack of tools that are guaranteed to work well together (Ansible Tower, Ceph, Satellite).

Not sure about SUSE, heard it's used a lot in Europe.

nobody knows because nobody knows what nonfree software really does, so you can assume yes and no
>If I'm running entirely free software aside from them, can the botnet still spy on me?
if you use dis-services like facebook etc and don't block tracking ads, yes, if you stay away from these, no, so you again, yes and no

Is the root file system where the OS is installed so to say? I'm trying to understand partitioning and how big I should make them. A lot of people have /home partitoned, and some have /boot, /var, and obviously the swap.
>>
>>59732046
Nowadays it's hard not to be spied on, but running entirely free software and not using facebook/google helps a lot.
That said, it's hard to have an entirely free system nowadays since even CPUs (post-2008) run nonfree code with full system access.
That said, you shouldn't care less and still fight back by rejecting nonfree software whenever you can.

I'm wanting to set up a triple boot on my laptop. Currently I'm running Windows 10 and Manjaro and I would like to install Parabola as a 3rd. Have any of you done anything similar? Any tips?

Just replace Windows 10 with Parabola.

No reason for separate /var or anything like that. Swap is necessary if you have a small amount of ram (under 8gb) or want to hibernate (like a laptop. in that case you need more than your ram). If it's the only mount point, / stores every file. It contains /home and /boot, as well as /var. If you make a separate mount point for /home, it is a subfolder of /, but located on a different drive. this can be useful if you have two drives, you could mount / on the smaller SSD and /home on your hard drive. All system components are stored on /- this is 2-10gb by default depending on distro. Further software is generally installed here, but isn't that large. At least 20gb is necessary, 40 is good if you have the space. /home stores pictures, documents, downloads, config files and some installed programs (steam games). If you have one drive, there's no need for a separate /home. Just mount / and home will already exist. If you plan to switch distros without losing your data, you can keep /home separate, so that it isn't wiped when switching distros. /boot is sometimes needed to be separate for special configurations, but I like to keep it on /. (for ext4 at least).

well that's sad
but unlike nvidia drivers, they're pretty small, so you can't fit that much botnet in them right? i guess it's kind of pointless worrying about that with a literal below OS level hardware backdoor. fucking thanks, (((intel))).

>No reason for separate /var or anything like that
There is if you're using a hybrid system with an SSD and a HDD. /var is constantly changing and does a lot of writing so it's a good idea to not keep it on your SSD if possible. Same case with /home.

>if you have one drive, there's no need for a separate /home
Unless you ever want to reinstall or switch to a new distro. You should never advise for someone to not separate /home from root, there are no downsides but it has benefits. Many people will wind up disappointed at some point if they leave /home with root.

If you run out of RAM, without swap, your system will either kill programs to get back memory, or crash. If you never use all of your memory, no need for swap. If you plan on doing gaming, beyond pixel Indie games, or programming/compiling, I'd probably add at least 4gb of swap just in case, unless you're absolutely in need of extra drive space.

The one that isn't botnetted? Iso must be at least 18 months old. Why is this distro even around? It's literally just Ubuntu with Cinnamon.

It's the flagship distro for Cinnamon made by the Cinnamon devs.
