Hello /g/,
I'm wondering how I get started with bitcoin mining? I have enough money to buy a bitcoin mining device, but can a layman make use of it? I'm pretty good with basic computer use but fixing/programming them I can't do.
Surely it can't be as easy as plugging in a device and just letting it run, giving me free money... right?

You probably won't make enough for it to be worth it.

you are 7 years too late.

Unless you've got money to buy tens of thousands of those devices, and create your own energy for said devices. It's time to give up that dream.
And if you do have that much money. I need $5000. Its for charity.

Well, I'm reading claims that one device which costs $500 for example produces about 0.16 bitcoins a month which is $243 CAD. If I can find an all-inclusive apartment where I just pay rent, not a separate hydro bill then I make a 100% profit margin and the device would pay for itself after a few months. A nice little supplement to my income.
Unless there's something I'm not being told, why wouldn't this work?
The other issue is just my technical skill. Are they hard to set up? That's why I'm here and not /biz/, I want more detailed knowledge about the hardware too.

Is the article 5 years old? There's no way you'd make that much in a month on a $500 rig

This, the mining boat left a long time ago.
They only way for it to be somewhat rentable nowadays is to externalize the computation to unsuspecting third parties. Lots of then.

Ah I see, oh well R.I.P. my dream of becoming a bitcoin miner. Thanks for informing me. Sage.

Hey, you can still try with meme cryptocurrencies. Litecoin is different to mine, can't be done on FPGA. Also there are many projects like Ethereum, Anoncoinsometing or else. They have a small market, but are worth real money.
