So i'm starting to get left behind on the mobile phone game.

Right now I have a BlackBerry Q10. It's a fantastic phone for texting, email and business. it's still pretty damn fast too. However the small screen is starting to annoy me. Also hardly any apps exist for it. I know I can sideload Android apps. The thing is that some of them work well and others don't. So I'd rather just upgrade to a phone where the apps are native.

This is where I'm not sure what to do. I've had Android phones before and they're okay. But i've always wondered what it would be like to have an iPhone. I've never owned an Apple product in my entire life and I've never been bothered by it. But a lot of my friends use iMessage and I feel so left out by not being able to use it too.

TL;DR: Should I upgrade to an Android phone or an iPhone? If Android, which one?

>>
>>59677075
I'd possibly look into the Passport if you do. It has a great screen, much better hardware and will last much longer. My Q10 is good and small. Maybe the keyboard is better in the sense that it is all physical but the Passport lets you use the keyboard as a trackpad. Plus you can get 'em new for $250-300 USD.

Wont connect to my houses router.
I've tried
>turning wifi on and off
>fresh windows install
>it has connected to my phones Hotspot and worked
>turning the router off and on
>manually connecting
>different security types
>shifting on my hand and Smearing it on my walls
>updating drive and uninstalling and reinstalling it
>trying a different WiFi adapter

I have an Asus z270e motherboard

Any ideas? Super frustrating with my new motherboard and build

I notice that modern graphics cards are starting to come with ridiculous amounts of vram.

Theoretically speaking, is it possible that an entire application could simply be loaded into VRAM and ran on the GPU? Like, an entire game? Would there be any benefit to this if so? I know most of them support compute shit these days, but those mostly seem to compliment traditional applications and just crunch big numbers.

What if I stole cable wirelessly?
Most people get caught because they just split the line and run it into their place. That's how they get caught. But get this... split the line, but instead of running it to your apartment, hook some sort of short range transmitter to it and then hook a reciever up to your TV.

Does this technology exist?

In theory yes, cuda is turing complete I think. It wouldn't be beneficial performance wise, CPUs are created and optimized to play video games well and have been for the last 25+ years.

Also, modern GPUs aren't really GPUs, you shouldn't think of them as extension cards. A GPU these days is basically an entire computer inside a computer, with its own OS and shit.
>>
>>59678140
that is actually for a phone?

doubt that would let you transfer files desu. and you would still need a crossover cable for direct PC/device transfer, in which case you could just fucking connect it with USB... or you need a router to transfer over the Ethernet

why dont you explain more exactly what you want to do, im pretty sure you're making shit more complicated than they are or you're being a retard.

Is HTTPS enough to stop ISPs from knowing what specific pages I go to?
I don't care who knows that I go to porn sites, I just don't want them to know WHAT I look at
>>
>>59678318
not even close, you tard. go learn what HTTPS does.
>>
>>59678318
Generally, yes. Keep in mind that porn sites know what exactly you look at and that they don't care about your privacy either.
>>
>>59678356
no, it's mostly used for logins and shit, it doesnt hide where you go.
>>
>>59678318
I don't know, is talking in spanish good enough to stop your phone carrier from knowing what phone numbers you're dialing?

HTTPS will stop them from knowing the content of the communications, but the only way to stop them from knowing who you're talking to is to use a VPN or the like. HTTPS isn't even really necessary to thwart the ISPs from intercepting your communications (although it's a good idea to thwart other groups...), it's illegal to snoop on the contents of packets just like it's illegal for your phone carrier to listen in on your calls.
>>
>>59678468

>>
>>59678139
how JavaScript works, and GET & POST requests
maybe start by simply downloading the webpageand trying to parse the html

I'd recommend python for this
>>
>>59678445
Do you even know what https is? It can be used for anything, you're most likely browsing 4chan via https right now. It will not hide your or the websites IP, it will in most cases not hide the hostname. It will hide all content including the URL path.
>>
>>59678490
...are you an idiot? Browsing history means they can sell a list of what websites you've visited. That's like your phone carrier selling a list of what numbers you dialed. It's still illegal to snoop on the contents of a packet.

You're also wrong in saying "any more". The regulation that was going to prevent selling browsing history wasn't even going to go into effect until next year - all congress did was abort that regulation. So nothing's changed from the way that it's been since day 1 of the internet. Stop falling for fake news.

>>
I'm having an annoying issue with my TP Link USB wifi adapter (WN722N). I keep on having to go through this cycle:
>internet works fine for a while
>leave computer on for a while without using it
>internet disconnects for a few seconds, comes back, disconnects again, etc.
>have to reinstall drivers, change USB port (I have no idea if this actually does anything) and restart the PC
>works fine until I leave for the day and the problem starts again
I haven't had a problem with the internet on anything else I own, and my other USB stuff is working fine, so I'm not sure what's causing this issue.

I'm trying to learn C++, but I keep having issues with my compiler. I've been working with Codeblocks and MinGW for like a month with no issues, then I get a message that a DLL can't be found. So I hunt through the internet and find it's some issue with my PATH variable or some part of MinGW. I check the path and it looks normal I suppose, then I go to my MinGW directory and there's nothign there anymore, the whole MinGW directory is gone. This is at least the second time some error with MinGW has halted my C++ coding adventures, and it's starting to piss me off. Is there some kind of occult ritual I need to do to appease the MinGW gods so I can program in peace?

I don't do anything super exciting with my computer anymore: I shitpost on 4chan, do schoolwork and try to learn C++. I can't figure out what causes weird shit like this. Is there a better compiler setup that doesn't do crazy shit like this?

I plan on using it for watching videos (mostly HD stuff) music, web browsing, school, drawing in CSP & Krita, and some light-mid gaming, mostly playing emulators like MAME & RetroArch and the occasional doujin/indie game.

Should I fall for the meme or would I be better off with any other laptop? I wanna keep it at $500 max.

Is there a way that I can get mpv to pre-process a video to be played?
Like for example I am watching a video but my processor isn't fast or my disk is busy.
If i want to jump ahead like 10 seconds it jumps there and then takes a few moments to start playing again
How wold I make it able to jump there and keep on playing?
Would I have to increase the cache?
I know it worked with bomi but that project fell apart

Having trouble installing Nvidia graphics drivers.

Got a Zotac 1050 Ti, currently using the iGPU via i5-2300.

Tried installing drivers from the Geforce website (http://www.geforce.com/drivers), and get pic related.

Any advice? Tried using Geforce Experience but that also gave pic related, just with a different look. Tried different drivers too and got "7-zip: Data Error".

Any help? Will give pics and help as much as I can.

I posted my build in a guts thread earlier. I was thinking, if I want to do liquid cooling on both of my GPUs, separately with single fan radiators, can I push air in through the single fan in the rear, and exhaust it through the roof and front panel fans? Would that be efficient? The rear fan is a 140mm, is that going to be able to feed enough air in for 3 radiators?

I have that problem with my M-Track 2x2 because the USB micro that plugs into it is extremely shallow and even just moving it a tiny bit to a different spot on the desk can disconnect it and something about rapidly connecting and disconnecting USB devices causes windows to shit itself. David Drake's early works, Hammer's Slammers, and the entire Leary series.
C J Cherryh's Merchanter's Luck but she really writes more space opera than science fiction. Problem with C J Cherryh is her tendency to use stream of consciousness to pad out her books. You could try JDownloader but it's a bit finicky for youtube downloads.

I use '4K Video Downloader', it's free to a limit, or you can pay a bit to be able to download playlists, etc. It's really decent, I've used it to download thousands of music videos. You can set it to download at 1080p or maximum available quality.

I have a 4x4tb raid10 mdadm array being backed up onto a 3x3tb spanned lvm volume in ubuntu.

I want to have more storage and was wondering what to do with the raid10 since it seems a bit overkill having a raid10 and it being backed up. One option is to convert it to a raid5 but I don't know if that's smart. I'm leaning towards simply spanning them but then I get zero speed gain.

Is it riskier to to use raid0 than span? Either way a single disk failure will kill the array anyway right?

I'm opening, using Windows 10, an .exe file (MerikensTripcodeEngine64, specifically), and it ends up in command prompt. There are supposed to be options which I can type in, such as -g -c -f -l -d and everything else. I know that on Linux you can type in their command box or whatever, but for some reason it won't let me type in mine. Is there any way to fix this, or at least make it utilize my GPU as well? I have "Intel(R) HD Graphics 520" and unfortunately I'm not even 100% sure it's compatible with the program. I managed to do a workaround wherein it started and immediately types -g, but when that happens it simply says that there's no GPU, which is obviously not the case. I'm pretty shitty with this specific area of technology, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been using tripcode explorer, but it gets ~2M trips/s maximum, while this program can apparently reach upwards of 400M/s - a definite improvement. Thanks in advance for any help!

this is really a pretty stupid question.

you open cmd, navigate to the dir with the exe in it, then type the name followed by any arguments. Same as on Linux. You don't run the application, then type the arguments after it's running.
>>
>>59684483
you don't do it this way.
you run the application from the command line by opening the command line first and run it with your arguments.
you don't double click on those, because that will just run them without any arguments and they'll close immediately because you didn't provide any.

Ubuntu. It's the only answer to "what distro should I get", unless you know enough to have a specific reason to get something else. It's got the most community support, and everything available for linux almost always has a version prepared for ubuntu. It's gone the farthest towards gaming and is more likely to just werk than most shit out there. Unity is shit, but you can pick whichever distro or DE you want. Mint is good for newbies.

>>59684771
Youtube uses independent audio and video streams for high resolution videos. You can get any combination you want, or even just the audio or video.

Youtube encodings are bitstarved with a fixed bitrate for each resolution, 4k videos look noticeably better even on a 1080p display.

It's an entirely different market segment though. Gtx 1060 owners won't (hopefully) be looking to use G-sync, but an extra $20 to add freesync to their 1080p panel makes a lot of sense.

Conversely, a gtx 1080ti owner probably wouldn't think twice about paying an extra $150 or so to get the benefits of gsync vs freesync.

What I'm saying is that there are plenty of things I'm willing to do in a command line, and running multiple arguments for every little youtube video is not one of them. I think most people who come here to ask that question are in the same boat, so repeatedly telling them and their even more normie friends to use youtube-dl is kind of like waving a set of tiny middle fingers. Which I'm ok with, I just want us to all be clear that it's not being helpful.
>>
>>59684921
>running multiple arguments
Youtube-dl uses the best quality by default, no arguments needed.

If you use google, you'll find several gui frontends for youtube-dl, such as
https://github.com/MrS0m30n3/youtube-dl-gui
It's even available for windows.

Several video players, such as mpv, will automatically use youtube-dl if you try to play a youtube link.
>>
>>59684970
The GUIs all suck, with very limited options, and have no support for choosing your resolution.
>>
>>59684991
I can see video and audio settings on a screenshot on the website I just linked, among several other options. I'm sure there's at least one gui that's implemented most of youtube-dl options.

Either way, this is by far the best gui video downloading software you can get.
>>
>>59684878
nope, it's not about that all

gsync doesn't have any real benefits to users, ignore the nvidiot circlerjerk about few more mhz

with all else being equal, NO monitor producer will pay for a gsync module, and even if nvidia gave that shit for free it'll be stuck only in acer predators and shit like that, there are top tier monitors like NEC that do provide freesync support - because they can - but none that do it for gsync because they don't want some retard-ass FPGA in their monitor design.

So you want to position freesync as low-tier and gsync as top tier? good job, all those 1080ti owners got freesync monitors because they're made by premium companies according to better requirements, and half of those that do gsync now (like HP etc.) will quit in due time

with gsync, not only do they get money now from monitor producers but the next time you upgrade you'll be inclined to stick with nvidia - monitors aren't refreshed as often as graphics cards
>>
>>59685016
At best you can set a single default resolution that's used by all videos, and ever other GUI out there is massively worse, if they even still work. Again, not arguing about it being most capable, I'm talking about usability.
>>
>>59685037
>single default resolution that's used by all videos
Isn't this what you would want, if you didn't want the best quality? Are you actually downloading each video in a different resolution?
>>
>>59685090
Yes, that's what I said. There's some shit that needs to be top quality, and a lot that doesn't.
>>
>>59685123
Then you still have to choose the quality for every video. I don't really see a difference to changing the "default" quality in the gui every time.
>>
>>59685136
The short and gritty is that program sucks ass, and doesn't do what you think it does.
>>
>>59681444
It literally doesn't matter. The GPU is connected to your PC if it's in the PCI-e slot. The only purpose of HDMI/DVI/DP cables are to provide video information to your display, or audio if you're into that type of sadistic shit.

Need a program to archive a domain.

For example say the website is:
goatse.cx

I want to give it the above url and recursively save everything on the website (all images, documents, scripts, etc.) so that I essentially have a fully functioning (or at least decent enough) offline copy of it.

Any suggestions?

VR and Nvidia use multi-res(or something similar) to get fps gains by reducing quality on the outside edge (pics related) and keeping normal resolution on inside box.

Is there a way to do this similar quality/performance trade with video encoders? I was thinking about this when a friend of mine was streaming his videos and when its bit starved, the stream would become more pixelated. Before anyone asks, bit limit is simply due to bandwidth issue. Now I was thinking of something like using multi-res for streaming where the outside edge would be lower bit rate and inside rectangle would use higher bit rate. The average bit rate would stay same, yet the quality would increase for the main focus (center) screen.

Is this a thing in either ffmpeg or video encoding/streaming?

>there aren't really any usb cables that you could plug into 2 PCs.
actually, there are cables for this
technically, they're more like two usb ethernet adapters attached to an internal hub, in the form of a cable

i used to have one of these (not this exact model, of course), over 10 years ago
they can be pretty useful
>>
>>59678196
yes, modern phones running OS's like android can use ethernet hardware
>and you would still need a crossover cable for direct PC/device transfer
not with modern MDI-X ethernet PHYs

you don't need a router to connect machines within the same network

I made a thread for this but it probably belongs here instead.

How do I restrict usage of my HP printer across my Windows 10 desktop, my mother's Windows 7 laptop, my Linux Mint laptop, my father's old iMac? The printer itself doesn't appear to have a PIN feature or anything for printing, and software I've found like PrintLock seem to only be for Windows.

I know the obvious solution is just to use different software for each machine. But I'd like some kind of uniformity, if possible. Ideally it'd be something I can manage from my desktop.
