Why the ability to daisy chain your keyboard and mouse has gone out of style will always puzzle me.
>>
>>59662481
I don't think it was common on PCs anyway since keyboard/mouse connected to seperate places on the mainboard, and by the time USB rolled around everyone was so used to it, with mouse cables being fucking long ass hell anyway.

ADB daisy chaining was rad though.

Depends where you get them. eBay is well overpriced, but if you know the right people, they'll throw some bits your way. Managed to get quite a bit of hardware for free over the years, including an Amiga 4000.

Huh, I did some research and apparently I didn't know what the ethernet adapter was. It's some proprietary format. I'm buying an adapter for it right now.
>>
>>59663343
Ah, is it the kind of flat connector? Kind of annoying. I think one of mine has that too, but I haven't bothered to look for an adapter yet.

At least DHCP worked out of the box for me on MacOS 7.6, so getting it connected to the network should be trivial.
>>
>>59663500
It's this thing: http://lowendmac.com/2007/apples-aaui-ethernet-connector/

Fortunately I've found one seller in my country who has it, and relatively cheap (definitely not "collector" price). I didn't expect to find it at all.

Back when apple hardware was worth talking about.

I feel like the era where technological progress = design change is long passed.
>>
>>59671064
Technological progress, all in all, is stagnating and has been for a while.
Sure you can get the newest smartphone with bendy screen and the newest ultrathin laptop with a spinny display or whatever, but none of these things are actually NEW. There's no innovating going on anymore, it's all the same stuff that was already around before.

Name one single invention that was actually made within the last ten, twenty years. There aren't any, because all the "new" stuff is just old stuff slightly improved upon.

You can't really call this innovation, just.. improvement.
>>
>>59671140
I think innovation does occur in less visible ways, perhaps leading towards refinement or improvement (as you say) of current products.

The biggest problem in my opinion is that we, tech companies and consumers alike, are so set in our paradigms that there is very little incentive for novel design. To borrow from your example, a smartphone is a smartphone is a smartphone. A hunk of metal or plastic with a glass screen is not only safe for companies, but it is what people expect.

As computers have made their way deeper and deeper into everyday life, radical change has become more and more difficult. Entire industries exist around instagram, twitter, whatever soshmeed bullshit people use. And in turn, those industries are dependent upon our current paradigm in what a smartphone should be.

And that's not even taking into account the shitstorm that would occur if tech illiterates who have been conditioned to become competent with smartphones suddenly had the rug pulled out from under them.

>>
>>59671064
>>59671140
>>59671210
I think we've long since passed the point of diminishing returns when it comes to technology. This isn't even "back in my day..." thinking, I just don't see what advantage a lot of it has on our lives. People have long conversations with people and don't even consider doing it in person, so who can say that is an improvement to our lives?

That's not to say that I'm against online communication, but it should never be a replacement for real-life communication. It should never really be a replacement for real-life anything unless there's a massive amount of tedium or labour saved by doing so.

>>59671290
Comfiness isn't profitable. Enjoy your sterile environment. But yes, I miss rooting through drawers and riffling through paper as well.

>>59671049
I hate the hypocrisy of things like the Raspberry Pi in that regard. "We made this to teach kids how to code! No, we don't supply the teaching tools thanks for the money, sucker." Really that should come with Pico-RISC on the board and have a think BBC BASIC book with it if they actually wanted to teach kids how to code.

I know that you can argue that it's all in how you use it, but the consolidated complexity of modern hardware makes really getting into the guts, the way you would for a C=64 or an Acorn Micro, is actually quite difficult especially for a learner.

I really love the design of old technology. I think simple geometric shapes are the most visually pleasant. And beige is a comfy color. Aluminium feels so sterile.

Wish the design language was kept and just updated with modern hardware.
>>
>>59674471
The issue is that the visuals of the external device matched the atmosphere of the internal device. Like, the screen output and the case of an Apple // both look like an Apple //, if you get my meaning.

Having those two looks together would clash something awful.

Not really.
Apple were rightfully mocked for their coloured computers in the late nineties. These designs haven't suddenly become acceptable.
But on the flip side, they received praise for their comfy as fuck PowerMac G5 and associated PowerBooks.

>in 10-15 years people will praise apple again for their current designs
I doubt it, but in 10-15 years if Apple is still spewing out shit, there will always be someone there to defend them.

"Millennials" comprise a wide range of ages. Someone born in 85' could easily remember using the computers in this thread when they were still relevant. I'm "only" 25 but I grew up using biege computers and in highschool we had white plastic MacBooks along with the tissue box shaped desktop Macs which IT ser up to dual boot windows.

I'm surfing from a Pentium M at the moment, it's probably what I'd place at the bare minimum for my usual browsing habits.

Gear in the late PIII/early Pentium 4 range with RDRAM or DDR can handle most sites that don't go overboard on client-side stuff bearably but video in the browser is a no-go.

Anything older than that back to about the Pentium Pro or late-era Pentium can work for shitposting, wikipedia and most other purely HTML+CSS sites.

And further back from that you can use lynx or webrender or X forward from another system or something. I shitpost and work on spreadsheets from mothballed SGIs using the latter.

Sometimes you just have to get creative or reel in your expectations. A lot of this shit wasn't really built for modern ultra-interactive browsing paradigms and wasn't really great with it even when it was worth thousands of dollars, and that's fine, there's lots of other stuff you can put them to work with if you really want to.

There is an even worse apocalyptic scenario that is way, way, way more likely.

An Electromagnetic pulse (EMP), either from a nuke or more likely the sun.

The most recent solar event was in 1859 (The Carrington Event), but luckily then we were electrical babbyswith just telegraphs to speak of. But when it happened, telegraph transceivers started sparking, telegraph wires burst into flames, and the aura borealis appeared all over the world.

If that event happened today, every power grid would instantly fry, and the internet, and every computer on earth would be destroyed with all digital data permanently wiped.

Have fun sleeping tonight.

I always see windows 98 shitboxes around here at Goodwill and flea markets and the like but what would I actually be able to do if I got one?

I remember trying to do anything internet related with Windows 98 a few years ago was a chore. I think the only site I got to reliably load with everything was 4chan.

I could play games on it I guess.

If I recall correctly Windows 98 didn't get along so well with external storage devices either.

One one hand, what a rip off.

On the other hand, totally worth the rip off.

Still, reminds me of some time in the early 00s (I think) when they found an entire warehouse in Malaysia full of fresh Amiga 1200s.

I wonder how many of these caches there are?

Lucky bastard. I've been to every thrift store in the county, and zero of them sell old desktops. They say int heir donation literature that donated computers get sent for recycling, even if in working order.

There's an electronics recycling drop-off place nearby too. They have big signs posted about how it's prohibited to scavenge or take anything, and a security camera pointed at the piles of old junk.

This is either the regulatory state or the lawsuit-happiness of this country run completely amok. Or both.

Fuck no they weren't, check out some archived copies of PC Mag/MaximumPC and look at Compaq's facelift in particular as a great example of the industry reaction to that shit. People for the most part loved the new Macintosh facelift.

I wish I took more pictures of my recycler visits too, I used to see tons (relatively) of whitebox PIIs built into cases with bondi blue pinstriped plastics. You could certainly avoid seeing the trend if you wanted to, but it was still there.

I've personally seen a lot more systems featuring it made after 1998 and using similar design cues as well. It's stupid to credit Apple for everything as everything in computing is built on something else and they too drew inspiration from somewhere, but to say such a visible force in marketing doesn't influence the marketing and branding of others even in subtle ways is just as close-minded, people hardly ignored those systems when they came out, it was quite a spectacular reboot when you give it some thought.

As I said before, Compaq is a great example. They went from curvy beige/black boxes to white and blue patterned plastics, pinstriping and other facets of design that may not be blatantly and maliciously "ripped off" but are obviously influenced by consumer expectations in the post-iMac (or iBook in pic related's case) market.

Yeah, it's far more blatant than it used to be since there's really very little to "copy" anymore with modern minimalist trends, so anything's going to end up looking like a clone no matter what you intend.
>>59697942
First-wave consumer shit from about 1996-2001 is great, when they were trying all kinds of stupid gimmicks nobody ended up giving a shit about.

I've got one of those 1400s freshly rebuilt with the stock OEM image still on it, the bloat is god awful.
