Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

overwatch can do 60 fps on the internal screen at medium quality. 60 fps on an external screen at high quality.

you're right that there's only one pcie lane being used, at gen2 speeds for these non-thunderbolt egpu setups. higher resolution and fancy effects seems to bite into performance a lot, texture quality not so much, especially if the textures are preloaded and sit in the card's RAM (level based games) rather than streamed (open world). routing the video output back to the laptop screen via optimus will also steal performance vs an external screen

What kind of drivers you install? Lenovo site is a mess, you have drivers labeled as Windows 10 yet when selecting OS there is no Win 10 filter.

My X270 arrived last Friday and since then I've been getting a BSOD / system crash ("critical process died") approximately once every day for no discernible reason.

- I ran the Windows memory testing tool and no problems were found;
- I ran chkdsk and no problems were found;
- I ran sfc /scannow to verify Windows system files and no problems were found;
- Doing a system restore doesn't help;
- I would examine the BSOD memory dumps but it never successfully writes any (the % is just stuck at 0 eternally);
- I haven't tried other OSes because I have to work and haven't had time to set up Ubuntu to my liking; I suspect it wouldn't help.

So I contacted Lenovo support since I have a warranty and they said they'd send someone out to replace my motherboard, which I hope fixes this problem.

Has anyone here had similar experiences?

Am I really one of the only people who actually prefers the new chicklet style keyboard? I'd rather use the 8 row style for its layout. Though, I prefer the key travel and solid feedback of the island style.

>>59631751
I did buy a new keyboard, it started acting up yesterday. Same connector issue. It's one month old so I'll get a refund, but I don't want to keep buying keyboards every 3 months.

They barely sell US keyboards in my country, where could I find other language ones? Aliexpress?

>>
>>59634631
10 (as well as maybe 8.1) is worth it if you dd windows. If you're spending the majority of your time on Linux as is then I doubt you have much to get out of it. Maybe it'll yield better battery life, but as long as you've got shit configured well anyway the difference wouldn't be huge. If you just have Win 7 as a backup or something then it's probably not all that worth upgrading.

keyboard GOD tier:
>X40
>X61s

keyboard GOLD tier:
>X230

keyboard OK tier:
>X201

keyboard OK but why did they have to fuck with insert/delete tier:
>X220

Based on my objective experiences of them as my daily driver.

The old layout at X201 and before was clearly superior to the new chiclet with X220 only having the insert/delete fuckup. They did however start to water down the quality somewhere around X201 by having shittier suppliers for some of the keyboards.

I ended having X201 and X220 with too soft feel for my taste and preferring X230 over them due to more stiff and tactile typing feeling which is very similar to what my X40 and X61s had.

Sometimes I dream how awesome it would be if I could use the old X40 as a bluetooth keyboard+mouse by installing finely crafted Gentoo on it but it's too much of a bother.

Can someone tell first hand how big the difference in build quality between the L and T series really is? I'm looking at the t460 and although it's in my price range the specs for the L series are better at a lower price.

Is the difference in materials, cage etc so big? Anything else to keep in mind?
>>
>>59637214
You can get that model for 890€ which although more expensive than the US it's not a huge difference
>>
>>59635496
Looking at that too. But looking at the price difference between the 460 and 460p it seems hardly worth it. Especially because some reviews mention the 460p runs really hot especially if it had a dedicated gpu as well
>>
>>59637351
>>59637749
>>59637765

so let me get this straight:

I shouldnt compare it to a 6200U because the 6200U is a "low power ultrabook CPU"

and

I shouldnt compare it to a 6300HQ because the 6300HQ "really is a tech enthusiast thing." ?

therefore I'm not allowed to say "modern T series cpu's have no noticeable single core performance improvement over a six year old sandybridge, or if they do they need a 45w tdp".

okay, I apologize then, I'll keep that in mind.

I bought a startech one. It works great and mounts flush. Every time I use a different OS the drivers are there and it just werks. Only problem I had was when I first got it it would come out of the slot every time I tried to pull out a device. Wrapped some tape around it and stuck it back in and haven't had a problem since. It may never come out but I'm never going to stick anything else in there so whatever

In Europe you get one in mediocre condition with HDD and 4GB RAM for that price. A good X220 might cost up to 250€ and that doesn't include SSD or extra RAM. I'd say 195€ for a good X201t is average.

Thank you. Would you say an X201t is significantly different in performance compared to a regular X201 or a X220? The added bonus of a rotateable stylus supporting screen is definitely nice and the configuration sold does have an i7 and 8 GB of RAM already, so less upgrades needed. I will still need to check the visual condition and ask about the internals some more, as I've only saw it from a distance and didn't have time to question the pawnstore clerk.

I also scoured around the local Craigslist-substitute a bit, and seems like T430 and X230 are the most common ones sold, mostly in the 200-300 euro range, usually in standard configuration. I've seen some exceptions, though.

Get an X220 or T520 from ebay and add an SSD yourself. Don't waste money on something that already comes with an SSD, you have no way of knowing how old that SSD is or how much abuse it's already been put through. You could end up with a paperweight after a month. Focus more on the features that you can't replace so easily, like the screen.

Funny story bro, way to make up stories and tinfoil hat your way of looking like a looney.
>>
last week i cracked the casing on my current t430 and decided to buy another thinking I'll put all the good hardware in one of the units and sell the second one. i saw an i7 listed on ebay with all basic parts (standard battery, 1366x768 screen, etc) so I put on a rather low offer and requested he keep the hdd as i don't need it - surprisingly he accepted. I planned on just transferring my current 1600x900 screen into the new one when it arrives.

the thing arrives a few days later and it fuck me did the seller screw himself out of a few extra quid.
- actually already had a 1600x900 screen, zero blemishes/scratches
- next to no wear/polish on the keys
- zero wear on the chassis (my current one was polished smooth on most keys and where the wrists rests)
- had a finger print reader
- extra large battery
- backlit keyboard
- very well kept machine

i assumed most of the people selling thinkpads second hand would be knowledgable enough to list them correctly and maximise their profit but I suppose I got rather lucky on this one.

I just bought that, its fucking great. Of course, depends on specific use case. But for me, using it for browsing and programming, its silent, fast, light, installed linux nicely with minimal hassle, and should be powerful enough to be useful for a long time to come.

Only drawbacks is the screen area doesn't necessarily feel super sturdy, though idk how that compares to other TPs, and it hasn't bothered me a bit.Of course, its a newer model so the Intel Botnet is on there, though apparently there are hacks for that, not sure if they work.

Finally, I'd recommend using the codes provided here, saved $500 on mine off standard retail. If you want specs, by the base version and buy the upgrades third-party - there are tutorials on how to repair/upgrade, and its way cheaper that way (like $100 instead of $300 for an equivalent SSD)

Help a fellow negroid out, /tpg/ --

I've been using my W520 since late 2013. Beautiful machine, everything I want in a computer. However, there's garbage inside the display, the heat exchanger is either clapped-out or very very dirty, and the computer feels like it's in many ways coming to the end of its lifecycle. So I'm looking for alternatives. I have two questions.

First, is there hope in cleaning the computer up? Will the fan and heatsink start chooching properly once various vents etc. have been cleaned? I'll assume this involves taking all the plastic off the rollcage and demounting the motherboard, so basically a full disassembly aside from the display.

Second, is the W530 any good? I've got options for replacements, and a minty-mint W520 would run some 800€ -- whereas a serviceable W530 could be had for 550€. I heard that people would sometimes swap 20-series keyboards into 30-series Thinkpads: does this work? Is that a viable choice, replacing a W520 with a W530 plus a keyboard transplant?

I've been here since forever. Currently typing on my T61p. Amused to see the younger generations adopt ThinkPads so feverishly. Keep it up, bros & non-bros.
>>
>>59649430
Clean the heatsink of dust and reapply thermal paste. If its anything like the T530 (which it should be as the motherboard layout is almost identical) You do not have to remove the motherboard from the rollcage to remove the heatsink. ONLY the keyboard bezel needs removal. Doesn't take long at all. As for the W530 it isnt a major step up from the W520 but if you want to upgrade the keyboards are interchangeable however you need to sand down the nubs (at the bottom of the keyboard so it can fit into the w530 bezel), modify the connector and flash the embedded controller. The W520 and W530 keyboard bezels are not interchangeable.

Oh and concerning the overheating, that seemed to have been a problem only when using the laptop at full capacity for quite a long time, so its use-case dependent. Unless you're gaming intensely or trying to compile/run intense computations, it should be fine for most tasks, i.e. mid-level gaming, and perhaps mid-level programming/number-crunching. For the more intense stuff its better to use a desktop or buy some crazy expensive gaming laptop anyway. The t460p is more than powerful enough for basically anything else, and nice and cheap to boot.

I may be wrong though, I haven't exactly tested the limits on mine.

Thanks for the answer, sir. I've already popped the W520's plastic a couple of times to change the thermal paste on GPU and CPU, but that did next to nothing to the actual issue. I think I'll go in there another time over the weekend, see if I can't make her work coolly again. Is there any possible gain from going into the vents underneath the computer? Does dust only collect and jam up in the heatsink and fan? What's the correct tool for cleaning the heatsink?

I thought the Ivy Bridges were supposed to run cooler than Sandy Bridges, and that the Intel GPU was slightly less shit. Is the display mostly the same? I could spend 550€ on coke and hookers as well.

>The W520 and W530 keyboard bezels are not interchangeable.

This is also highly useful. Thank you.
>>
>>59649599
I just used a vaccum cleaner with a nozzle to get the dust out of my heat-sink whilst it was out. As for cleaning the vents under the computer I don't think so I dont think much air is drawn from there. I use my T530 on my bed and provided that the vents on the side arent blocked it runs at the same temperatures as it would on a desk. As for the displays the W530 and W520 1080P displays are the same wide gamut panel. Just be weary that If the W530 has had its screen replaced late in the warranty period by lenovo It could have been replaced replaced with some cheaper lower quality display as the Original wide gamut panels got discontinued and hard to come by. B156HW01 V.4 is the model number of the high quality wide gamut panel.

Thanks. This is all I needed to hear -- I can always stand to spend less cash, and replacement computers will be around for years to come, so a couple of years of extra life in my W520 wouldn't be wasted at all.

Anyone tried the x220 boot UEFI with an mSATA ssd?
>>
>>59650062
All **20 models support mSATA booting
t. anon with T420

And i didnt see the UEFI part, but the answer should still be yes.

why do you guys like thinkpads so much?

my mom asked me to get her a new computer, and I'm wondering why thinkpads get their own threads
>>
>>59650575
because they're tuff
>>
>>59644723
how does it run for you now? all good?
>>
>>59650575
Because its a reliable $200 laptop that just about matches any $400-$500 entry level new laptop yet has way better build quality.
>>
>>59650575
Cheap used laptops, not attractive to normies so the prices are low. Great GNU/Linux support. Easy to fix/repair, lot's of spare parts.
>>
>>59647937
No. You should charge your phone.
>>
So you're telling me the recommended models which i bought (x230) is actually a shit stain? I can't even change the battery without it causing an error.

those are housefire tier anon

Just ordered my t460p refurbished, but it comes with 4gb ram. Did anyone manage or does anyone know if it can handle 2x32gb?
>>
I see a lot of used X240/X250 being sold without the internal battery.
Why does that happen, did the battery go bad?
Also, how usable is it without the internal battery?
>>
>>59636909
battery check isn't in the bios, it's in the EC, and lashing that is easy as shit.
the bios is encrypted though so you can't put in any 3rd party wireless cards nor can you de whitelist it
>>59635945
There is literally nothing wrong with the keys being chicklet
if anything the chicklet keys feel far better to type on than the t420/x220's keyboard.
the only thing wrong with it is the layout, and it isn't that bad (still far better than most other laptops).
>>
>>59635547
I hate the x201's short delete key
Plus with the x220/t410 having a big delete key that makes the other keys line up nicely with f9-12

Guys I'm about to buy P50 with 6820HQ, qadro M2000M and one M.2 SSD.

WIll I have any problems with Windows 7 drivers?
WIll I be able to mount myself another M.2 or 2.5" drive or do i need to order some cables/sockets together with it?

x200 is comfy as fuck just the right size just make sure you back up the stock bios in-case you want to go back just make sure to replace the shitty wifi chipset it comes with
>>
>>59651583
>why
It's a mystery.
>how usable is it without the internal battery?
The internal battery is only for backup power in case your primary battery runs out of power to allow you to shut the machine down before any data is lost. It's as usable as a laptop that doesn't have a secondary battery in the first place.

I'm meeting with a guy that has multiple T420 from his company that is purchasing new laptops in bulk.

I told him I'm interested in T420, 8GB,1600x900.

What should I be careful about?
I already aked him about the BIOS password and computrace, he assures me both are disabled and that the charger is original.

I want to buy a x series tablet.

Is the x61 going to be infuriatingly slow? budget is ludicrously low and i'm in the UK so everything's a bit more pricey than the stuff I see on US ebay. Used basically for web browsing / html.
>>
>>59653164
Tell me about it I'm buying a T420 now for 200 Euros. Fucking VAT
>>
Can I install the 1440x900 screen from the X201s in a regular X201?
>>
what new laptop should I get with a pretty high budget? Coming from t420. I want something with good Linux support and a good Intel GPU (just kaby lake igpu is fine. I don't want to mess with cancerous nvidia shit on Linux). It sounds like modern thinkpads are basically a lost cause at this point, so what should I get instead? Considering xps 15 but ive heard it has poor build quality and coil whine problems...
>>
>>59653331
>modern thinkpads are basically a lost cause at this point
On the T460p Linux just werks. I suppose it does on the T470 an T470p too, so these are pretty good options. Concerning the XPS 15, you're right. Coil whining is fucking brutal on this and it's built poorly. Especially the keyboard. Not to mention the lack of a trackpoint.
>>
Should I buy a Y720 as my daily carry? How's the battery life?

>>
>>59653365
Get an X series tablet instead.

Y720 as in legion. For muh games. But I also value battery life.

Anyone have the Thinkpad branded Bluetooth mouse from the Lenovo site? I was thinking of getting it to match my x260
>>
>>59638308
Not him, I have flexing in the left parts of the keyboard.
>>

the usual: boot it up, see if all keys are working, Screen is okay, scratches an so on.
>>
>>59652848
Anyone has any tips regarding this?
>>
>>59653482
Oh, I've just replied same time as you did.

As the system has Windows on it should I bring some tools on a USB to test the laptop? Any Lenovo tools for batery life and HDD check?

sorry, no idea, i have my x220 for two weeks now, just digging in.

Guys, i bought a t440s with fan error and no charger for 50$ (not stolen i checked) and i am really enjoying it, not using my lenovo y50 anymore because the screen and keyboard are BS. what should i do to the t440s? what are some advised mods? (specs: i5-4200u, 8gb ram, 128gb ssd, 1600x900 display (one dot is lighter then the others?) :( )
>>

chances are good you won't get screwed over. i've got mine from a guy who had no idea what he sold and the machine was in perfect condition.
>>
>>59653390
pls respond
>>
Assuming you have the budget, is there literally any reason to get a T470 over an X1 Carbon? The screens on the T series have like 60% or less sRGB coverage, 400:1 contrast ratio, they are fucking pathetic. The T470 also only has a single Thunderbolt port, and the keyboards have been re-engineered such that they are now basically indistinguishable.
>>
What is the recommended Dell Precision model, is it still worth trying to get a good m4600 or would it be better to get a more recent edition?
>>
>>59654720
Replacing the touchpad with one with actual trackpoint buttons is probably the main thing you'd want to do. Otherwise the only significant upgrade would be a FHD screen, but it's not like the one you have isn't good.

Do I have to find a IBM thinkpad, or is lenovo cool? cause they look pretty gay

and the ones I can afford dont have a track ball, to me thats about half the fun, I dont really use laptops for more than youtube and python

>>
>>59656860
i've installed Windows 10 pro on it and it runs very well. upgrade it to 8gb ram and put a msata ssd inside it.

I'm installing Fedora on it as I'm working with mostly CentOS machines so this should be decent OS for me.

Whats a solid, and easy to find screen upgrade for the t420?

who here is cheering on the mass adoption of ulv cpus in consumer laptops? every 7w dorito that's sold new in 2017 means an i5-2520m from 2011 depreciates just a little bit slower
