IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

New to /tpg/ or looking for purchasing advice? (hint: use the advice request template, it makes life easier)
http://pastebin.com/JiXZ2f0t

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

It's not so much that they are depreciating slower, but they are remaining a lot more useful for a lot longer. That's not just a result of low voltage processors in laptops, but it is also a product of the mass adoption of phones.

That being said, it cannot last forever. Eventually the Sandy Bridge CPUs will be completely worthless and out of date, and when that day comes we are facing a non-modular, hard-to-repair low-voltage future. But thankfully, because of the emphasis on power efficiency and muh thin, we can delay that age just a little longer than we would have been able to otherwise.

As in, what will be the universally shilled model on /g/? Tough to say. Some people here are warming up to the new Thinkpads, I personally could take them or leave them. I am sure the Tx70 will be loved since it has been re-engineered to be more sturdy and has gone back to the classic black colour scheme.

As for what model will pick up the baton for being easily repairable? Maybe the xx30 for a while, but once those have passed, it's just as >>59660648 says. There will not be one.

Is $200 for a refurbed X220 reasonable? Is ktgee still a decent price guide? It says $220 for "buy it now" is expected, so this seems good enough for the impatient.

>>
>>59662334
you have to set it while using windows7 then if you reboot into w10 it works, but if somehow at some point they wont work anymore, you need to get back in a windows7 install and set it again. that is if you actually really care about thresholds. you could just spend $20 on some chink battery 1-2 years later and replace it forever.

I'll be honest, I never actually bothered changing the thresholds at all. This thing came with 8.1 and it was pretty alright with the battery for my usage so I didn't really worry about it that much. I use the thing maybe 3 days a week, no more than 3 hours a day, and it works fine for that.

>>59662387
I suppose you could find replacement keyboards for many models you would find in a flea market. Check them out if you're not in a rush; make sure to check dates and spots in advance for flea markets in your area.

But in the end, since you'll be living in Japan might be a good idea to get used to their keyboards. In the end its mostly just like English keyboards, just set the system's input method to English and it won't be much different from what you're used to.
>>

be sure to read if they have replacements or not.
They also have an eBay store and I have bought some exact panels from them for fairly cheap, they are in canada and in US.
I bought a 'compatible' FHD IPS display for a T440p and it was a really good deal for the price (basically bought two chimei's for the price of a used superior panel).
less in adobe RGB and color 'pop' but it didn't matter because it was IPS.

When i got the shipment it was pretty much a box, cardboard pieces, padded envelope and then red 4mm styrofoam layers and the screens were in antistatic bags.
Weren't damaged, it was a bit questionable, but it was USPS so it was insured.

I've been using a 2010 White MacBook at my work.
Nothing special, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, nVidia GeForce 320m, some 128GB SSD.
It might boot up slowly, but it handles 15 chrome tabs fine, not as great as my T430s but, if I hated it, I would of stopped using it.

I really don't do anything intensive, sometimes my 320kps music stream may skip for a tenth of a second when exiting a tab, but no problems when loading up a page.

I mean, I was surprised how an intel GPU T60 that had Zorin installed did very well with a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo T2400 (passmark score of 793) was able to play youtube at 480p at a slower framerate but there was no skipping.

TL;DR you'll be fine for 5 years.

My X61T needs to have new thermal paste and a battery, oh and a screen i guess (icky SXGA+ glue issue). Although its not preferred because I gave in to something else, I still have it and don't want to get rid of it.

Given how quickly T440 prices went, when you upgrade, you probably will want more battery life and something slimmer or powerful.

You will not find a bang for the buck business laptop with HDMI
They'll most likely have display port/miniDP, but not HDMI. Yopu will fucking whine about not wanting to use a $10 adapter.

I bought this picrelated battery for my X220 a year ago (http://www.ebay.com/itm/131558010725)

It has only 28 cycles on it now, but I just noticed that the charge lasts not for 6-9 hours as I was expecting, but for barely 3 hours.
The percentage goes from 100 to 50 in 2 hours and then suddenly drops from 50 to 0 in 10 minutes and then runs on 0 for 20 minutes. Did I get scammed or is do I need to recalibrate the battery or something?

I'd go for about the same price in the US in good condition, or like 250 if it's worn down.

Sounds like my old Ford. My dad used to have a 1994 Ford Taurus with the 3.8L Essex V6. The speedo maxed out at 85 MPH but the car could go a lot faster than that. When I inherited the car in 2005, after swapping in aftermarket steel head gaskets (always a weak point in the Essex) I also located a speedometer from a Canadian market Taurus, which went up to 200 km/h (125 mph). Never had it up to that but I did clock the thing at 170 km/h once, which is around 106 MPH. Car would have fucking fallen apart had I gone any faster, in fact it was not happy going over 85 even if it was capable of it. I can see why they chose to use such a conservative top speed on the speedometer.

Meanwhile my 2008 4-cylinder Accord is perfectly fine at 110 MPH.

Is the hardware between the X220 and the T420 the same?

I want to swap the HDD from the X220 to the T420 back and forth.
In GNU/Linux this can be done without issues, but Windows 7 might cause issue.

Anyone tried something similar?
>>
>>59672145
It's only roughly similar. Boards will be their respective own. There is a chance Windows *may* tolerate it hardware/driver wise, but don't bet your luck on it. That and depending on the install (mostly OEM one in this case), it may simply shit on you for it because of how the license is tied

I did once transplant a hard drive across to a newer asus board and nehalem to sandy vag. It worked fine but windows did notice and ask for confirmation

>>
>>59660174
If it works you just need to reset its statistics.
What I did with my x230: left it on charging for 2 hours (it was at 99%) until it's at 100%, if it is not charging go ahead
Change your power settings to not make it shut down when the battery is at 0%
Open a resource demanding software, something to stress the CPU for undefined time (I used resolume arena just cause I had it) and leave it on with screen brightness at max
It will shutdown, power it on repeatedly until it can't even power the LEDs.
Connect the charger with the pc off until it is fully charged (it should be possible at this point) and repeat the full process

My battery was old but with just a hundred cycles, it went from 30 minutes of charge to 5 hours.

Alright /tpg/, crazy idea for you here.

I have a Thinkpad r60 with dying speakers and a crappy headphone port. I want to use it's speakers, because occasionally I'll show a thing to a friend and it has sound (This is my only laptop). Now, how dumb would it be to buy a bluetooth adaptor for my laptop and hook it up to a bluetooth speaker when I want the speakers, since I don't use them too often. Would this work, or would the sound quality be as distorted as it is through the 3.5mm jack?

I'm pretty sure most of use just leave it at default.
10 hours is very good. With the X220 the # of cells give you an estimate of hours so
>3 cell ~3 hours
>6 cell ~6 hours
>9 cell ~9 hours

Since you're getting 10 hours that means your power draw is less than 10W with is nice.

A 7" thinkpad tablet with keys removed but overall key size reduced as little as possible. Would fit in breast pockets. Presumably with some kind of folding cover to protect the keys so they don't shear when the tablet is removed from your pocket. Low voltage core i3 and a unique display, magnesium alloy shell. Basically like that GPD thing but with a non retarded trackpoint and no clamshell design for overall design simplicity.

Yes and people almost always fail at it once current is removed at any time.

No. For the price of one that would be fair/ok for gaming, you can get a much better gaming laptop.

E5xxx are cheaper, though not as bad as E/L series ThinkPads
E6xxx main line.
Dunno much about the latest 7000, 5000, 3000 series though, I think 7000's are flagship models.

I just got an old IBM ThinkPad 340. I can barely even find any material on anything for it online. Its in amazing cosmetic condition and it works perfectly minus a flat battery. Anyone else here have some experience with old pre-2000s ThinkPads? This one didn't have the modem installed but I understand its pretty easy with the jack attachment and a card of some sort. I'm also too scared to open it as there doesn't seem to be any specific releases for the keyboard. Its also running DOS.

God I fucking love the keyboard on it. Pic related, same but not my exact one, haven't gotten round to giving it a photoshoot yet.

Looking for a Thinkpad that can do quad core CPU.

Would probably trash the 500gb HD for a 2TB and get an SSD for the OS/software.

Worth it, or can I find better?

Hi, /g/, I'll try to use as little text as possible:
I'm looking for a laptop for my dad, who is:
[1] Sysadmin in a small office
[2] Part-time developer
[3] Ubuntu user
[4] Budget is 900 USD
The criteria is:
[1] Portable (not heavy)
[2] 13" screen
[3] 8 gigs of ram (or upgradeable)
[4] Decent CPU
[5] 1080p screen

So, after a brief search I've stumbled upon Thinkpad 13 Gen.2 which has all of that as well as it's KabyLake, Ubuntu certified, has 256 gigs SSD and also is only 800 USD, is this a perfect laptop for my daddy? Or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

>>59676065
If $USD, you could probably edge into W520 territory. That and the W510 doesn't do Optimus so the battery life is quite meh. Dunno whether or not they introduced a BIOS update but the W520's battery runtime is pretty much doubled due to being able to run on integrated
>>
How long should I expect the battery on a used t420 will run?
>>
>>59685872
All depends on the condition. But 6 cell with typical run should probably do 3-4 hours

>>
>>59686338

the T400 keayboard is mushy as fuck compared to other models.

go for a W500\T500\T61\T60\T43 then
>>
Got a T420, SSD and shit for Coreboot coming Tuesday. Interested in one of the 1080p screens but heard the converters are hard to come by.
Best place to get them? Saw a link earlier in the thread but poster said they were no longer for sale there.
>>
>>59661559
Read OP

Basically they are built at a much lower standard (ie no rollcage, no usefull LED's, no reinforcement on keyboard, drainholes, magnesium lid, etc)
>>
>>59686460
>W500\T500
Is the difference that much significant?
>>
>>59686819
W500 may come with a Radeon HD3650 and a 1920x1200 display
>>
A dilemma: 2 t420's, one with i5 2.6, 4g ram and 500gb hdd, cost $245, another with i7 2.8, 8g ram, 180gb ssd, cost $290. Which one would you choose?
>>
>>59686942
I'd choose the one that is in better shape and with a better display.
>>
>>59686971
They look like they are in similar (good) shape, not shure of about the screen. No opinion on the specs?
>>
>>59672849
8GB RAM is perfectly ok, 16 is a meme for u. I'm thinking to buying one too. Considerer buying the i5 6xxxHQ
>>
>>59687054
well storage doesn't matter that much because the 500GB is a mechanical drive and 180gb (intel) ssd is probably pretty beat up and sata2

the i5 is probably a 2540m which is decent, but the i7 is a similar slightly faster dual core and runs hot too, you get +8% performance in exchange for +10C idle\load temps. 8gb of ram is alright, probably 1.5v 1333mhz non-ddr3l tho.

tl;dr: if you're not into upgrades then get the i7 one. otherwise get the i5 and a msata ssd now, and an unlocked bios and 8gb of 1866 ram later.
>>
>>59675297
buy a t420 instead. The t420s battery life is crippling, take it from someone who made the decision to buy a t420s over the t420. I'll get 2 hours full charge on a good day.
>>
Is W7 on the X220 a good system for light virtualization?

I used to do it on hackintosh quite frequently without the battery dropping fast and I heard W7 is mostly the preferred OS for this thing.
>>
>>59687402
>Is W7 on the X220 a good system for light virtualization?
yes, I can run two debian lightweight webdev machines both at the same time.
>>
>>59686460
>W500\T500\T61\T60\T43
What you run on those?
Windows 7?
>>
>>59688744
whatever you want dude, he asked for a typewriter laptop with a 14\15" display. but if you want to squeeze more battery life yes, windows7.
>>
>>59688786
I just though since these are old models, you'd have to install WinXP or Vista.
Does 1 GB of RAM enough? or you will need to turn off aero?
>squeeze more battery life
What?
>>
My W520 murders batteries, is this normal?
>>
>>59688923
OS?

>>59688816
>Does 1 GB of RAM enough?
on the T43 maybe, but on a T500 come on, you can afford at least 2GB.

32bit W7 runs fine with 1GB, as in a browser with a couple of tabs as in older ESR firefox or presto opera v12.18, and microsoft word. and turning off aero saves around 50MB max iirc

W7 works really well with these thinkpads, especially if you use it like anon said like a typewriter\taking notes, and especially if you install something like Windows Embedded Standard 7 (came with several older E-series thinkpads) which takes like 5Gb disk space installed and 400MB of ram.

therefore yes, a T43 with 1GB of ram and a $14 32GB ssd is more than enough.

also personally I never bothered to use XP because it fucking sucked on every post-2006 laptop and you have to spoonfeed it the right drivers for every piece of hardware installed or else lol-bluescreens and lol-hangs4ever.
>>
>>59689463
>$14 32GB ssd
Where do I find these?
>>
My cheapo Asus laptop's hard drive is soldered to the motherboard, and it's fried. Bye bye $250.

Do thinkpad's have this problem? Can I easily replace components if they become old or broken?
>>
>>59689553
Thinkpads were made with upgrade in mind, so no.
What part is soldered?
Usually it's just the SATA interference, which can be easily swapped.
>>
>>59672849
My XPS 13 with an i7-6560u and 8GB ram starts to choke when I'm working with a lot of data in Matlab or Python. What field are you in? If you'll be doing a ton of modelling and statistical analysis you should probably go for 16GB ram with a Q or HQ processor.

Or just get a light laptop and a powerful workstation

Recently got the t460p for the exact same type of work. The main reason the t460p was better suited has to do with the processor chip designs. All processors with a U appended to the name are optimized for general browsing/office use because of their micro-architecture design - you have to look beyond just the given specs here. They are really good at over-clocking and getting a lot of work done very quickly - however, this is only sustainable for a short time. The chip is designed for mostly idling, and then short bursts of intense activity, and this works great for most people. Its great for quickly loading a web page or a program like photo-shop, but as soon as you have to compile something, or analyze a large data-set, i.e. sustained, constant CPU-use, the chip will quickly fall out of overdrive and work at much lower capacity than even its advertised speed.

That being said, in my setup, the laptop is auxiliary - for really intense stuff, I can simply ssh into my desktop at home, which is much more powerful, and have it do the computing.
