What linux distro has the longest battery life?

Will probably buy a Dell XPS 13 or Acer Swift 3 or an ASUS this summer as I need a new laptop for my job.

Mainly going to be using it for programming.

Need the battery to last at least 8 hrs. MacOS already does 10 hrs and coding on it is super nice but the new Macbook pros are shit and the 2015 ones are all sold out.

I'm using fedora on my current Dell Inspiron but battery life is shit, same with Lubuntu, and Xubuntu

Help me /fglt/. .
>>
>>59590315

All distributions have the same battery life. You run the same software on all, assuming you use the same versions.
There is no "best distribution" for anything and certainly not for things like battery life.

>>
>>59590389

The only thing which can influence your battery life majorly is the kernel. Assuming you run the same kernel, every distribution will have the same battery life.
The differences between battery drainage between Firefox 45 and 52 are negligible. The same applies for 99% of software.

Make sure the partition it's on is mounted. Try lsblk, and if you have an unmounted <1GB partition, mount it (
sudo mount /dev/sdxy /some/empty/directory

Basically, but don't rely on && and ||, for a solid solution use if/else, since && and || depend on the exit status of the last command, so when, in your example, rm fails to remove fil2, varibale=0 will not run. Use && and || only for simple stuff.

echo identical
echo ass

echo non-identical
echo pussy

It's not a homogenous ecosystem like windows or osx so malware for one distro may not work on another, it's typically more secure and it has a smaller user base of more security conscious users.

It's potentially a lot more work for less reward than targeting windows, osx, Android or iOS.

Font rendering on Arch came up in another thread so I made this guide on getting infinality like fonts. Since it comes up a lot and harfbuzz broke the infinality bundle in January I thought I'd share it here too and keep it on hand for whenever it comes up.

-Creating an Infinality-like font configuration for Arch-

From a clean slate on Arch we can now create a similar font configuration to the infinality-bundle's without having to use the patched packages. It is now possible to easily get great-looking results with the default interpreter.

1. Create the following symlinks to instruct freetype2 to use good-looking rendering defaults
sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/11-lcdfilter-default.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d

sudo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-sub-pixel-rgb.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d

2. Modify (or create)
/etc/fonts/local.conf
to contain these contents: https://pastebin.com/rnDtdzt5

3. At this point your fonts should look pretty good but we can do even better by making sure that we have all fonts on the system that were defined as substitutions earlier. To do this we need to install the packages
fonts-meta-extended-lt
and
fonts-meta-base
from the AUR which will build the rest of the fonts required.

After having done all this, restarting the X-server by logging out and back in should apply all changes.

I really don't understand why. Why isn't there a universal wallpaper setter that forcefully draws on the root window like feh does? For example "display -window root wall.png" should draw on the root windows, but with compositors like compton enabled, it draws below the root windows, so it's useless. Same with other programs I tried.

Repeat for each playlist.

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

Maybe not a Linux question, but I'll give this a try

I'm running an old Intel NUC with HD4000 graphics and an old version of Mint

Whenever I'm on any website that has animations or video, my CPU fan goes crazy. Sometimes if it's particularly warm in the room, I get lockups

I know my current Mint version doesn't support HD4000 and I'd have to either bork my install and have scary manual system updates, or just never update anything

Does this sound like something that I could fix by just blowing everything out and going with a newer distro? I want to have a 100% plain vanilla default install, with the official repos only, and no third party stuff. And as an add-on to that, what's good these days? I ran Debian for years and it was remarkably stable but it required a lot of fucking around to get hardware support, which is what I'm trying to avoid here

Should I just get Ubuntu even though they hate my privacy?

It isn't even just an init system anymore, it's trying (and succeeding) to replace the entire userland, they even got into the kernel with kdbus/bus1, and the team in charge is the one that worked on PulseAudio.

I'm sure it wouldn't get half the hate it gets if it was actually optional, but the CIA niggers decided to force almost every popular Distro to adopt it. Well, at least I wouldn't hate it if I could choose between installing systemd, openrc, runit, etc. when I was on Debian (and later, Arch).

Also I think sysv is shit too, but this is one of those cases in which the cure was worse than the disease.

nemo is what you want.

and you should install Cinnamon as well. it's by far the best and most complete DE that doesn't need any extra shit.

Is there any convenient way to safeguard myself from accidentally rming important stuff? I'm thinking something like the trash functionality in Windows.

Windows isn't shut down, it's hibernating. Turn off secure boot or any weird shit in BIOS/UEFI. Turn off fast startup in control panel in windows.

Problem not in bios (didn't find secure boot), i've disable fast boot, nothing changed, so yes i'll modify the fast startup in windows.
Thx for your help.
>>
>>59606264
>fast boot
Was 'fast boot' a weird option you found in the BIOS?
>>
>>59606296
Yes. Now it just take a few more seconds to boot.
>>
>>59606296
Don't quote me on this but I heard it skips the wait on the splash screen or something, so you can't get into the BIOS by mashing buttons anymore but it shaves a few seconds off boot times.

What's the best way to get a recent ffmpeg working on Ubuntu? I don't want to handle dependencies manually so I'm hoping there's some sort of compile helper script out there like there is for mpv. Its bad enough compiling exponentially smaller projects without any help but a readme
>>
>>59607125
Install arch in a vm
>>
>>59607130
What, and compile a staticly linked version of ffmpeg and move it back to the host machine?
>>
>>59607215
No. Use it in the vm.
>>
>>59607215
dont listen to the arch pleb
just install libav, literally the same thing as ffmpeg
>>
>>59607298
Any overhead is too much overhead. What's the point if I could just run it on the metal?
>>
>>59607367
No thanks. I'm on the ffmpeg side of that whole debacle for multiple reasons
>>
>>59607371
>run it on the metal?
It will run on the metal with a vm.
>>
>>59607407
literally why.
use whatever software gets the job done. you're being an idiot by saying 'no i must use ffmpeg although libav does the same job and is easier to install'
you'd have already begun encoding by now if you'd have taken the advice
>>
>>59605385
instill gantry
>>
>>59605484
>It has shutdown in a normal way...
windows 8+ doesn't shutdown without hibernating by default
>>
>>59607125
you really don't want to compile ffmpeg and its deps by hand
>>
>>59607445
I'd still have to compile it from source because I need the most recent stable release, and besides that ffmpeg is better maintained and receives features and support faster than libav due to it being the more popular choice
>>59607521
Yeah, but I have to. PPAs aren't an option either because they more often than not fuck up dependencies for other software in Ubuntu's normal repos. I'm speaking from personal experience
>>
>>59607954
this is one reason why i switched to arch
