What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you proprietary slave? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class at Harvard, and I’ve been involved in numerous free software projects, and I have contributed to over 300 core-utils for GNU. I am skilled in Lisp and I’m St. IGNU-cius, saint of the Church of Emacs. You are nothing to me but just another unethical non-free software advocate. I will distribute the fuck out of your source code with freedom the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit about me and the GPL on the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my colleagues at FSF and your binaries are being reversed engineered right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your copyright. You're fucking dead, kid. Free software can be anywhere, anytime, and it can ensure your freedom in over four ways, and that’s just with the GPLv2. Not only am I extensively skilled at hacking, but I have access to the source of the entire GNU userland and core-utils and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable proprietary code off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what ethical retribution your little “clever” program was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have ensured your users' freedom. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit free as in freedom all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Pic related is a TUI interface to the transmission-daemon with vim keybinds called stig, similar to transmission-remote-cli, only better.
It also provides a CLI interface that can be used in scripts and the TUI is themeable.
It's really cool imo so I thought I'd share it here.

https://github.com/rndusr/stig
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/stig-git/

Be sure to install from the development branch, because it's still being heavily developed and some python3.6 related bugs had been fixed just a few days ago.
Also be sure to have transmission-daemon installed.

>what's wrong with transmission-remote-cli
transmission-remote-cli is broken abandonware (it's been superseded now by tremc, which is the same crap, only in python 3).
https://github.com/fagga/transmission-remote-cli
>transmission-remote-cli is no longer maintained.
>Alternative Transmission TUI clients are tremc (a fork of this project) and stig.
Also, it's ugly.

It has all of the newest stable packages, a great package manager and easy access to the AUR. Any package you can think of you can install stupid easy. I've been on Arch for over a year and never had any problems. The Arch breaking memes are bullshit.

newer Intel CPU's have this "Management Engine" thing, which is basically another CPU that has access to your machine at hardware level and runs it's own proprietary code

So recently I have been having an issue with Chrome. Turns out the RAM it uses is not counted as application usage. So in other words I've been running out of RAM due to Chrome's memory lust. To stem this tide I've added a spare HDD to the device as a swap drive. Unfortunately, it looks like the machine will not use the swap partition for this type of memory usage. Is there a way I can force the machine to use this available space?

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

don't do legacy, a lot of OS detect if they get booted in uefi or bios and do certain things. You probably want to be in uefi

Do the screen show you that it's going to boot the ISO or just immediately blank screen?

find your motherboard settings keyboard config, usualy press enter or f12 or something as you boot and make sure it's booting from the usb

If that doesn't work, some ISO just don't like being written through some software to USB. Try rufus and make sure the dropdown for UEFI is selected after selecting the iso.
>>
>>59583256
I have tried both with and without legacy, each time it's instant blank screen. Or if I write the .iso from the terminal it won't detect it "no bootable drive detected -- insert drive and press any key" or something like that.

I've been using unetbootin, I'm working with linux mint. I'll give rufus a shot and get back to you.

I always have the best results just using the dd command. Lots of distros have issues being burned with things like unetbootin/rufus but I've never once had a problem with dd.

I've been using the dd command almost exclusively now, I've been trying to eliminate as many "middle men" as possible. I'm fairly positive I'm booting from the USB because I've been through all the options from the boot select screen. One menu of options always leads to just booting mint as normal, the other either boots to blank screen with cursor, there is no bootable drive inserted.

I'm starting to question if I need to make certain partitions on my usb but I don't fully understand that. I have just done a complete format to fat32 with gparted, then dd'd the iso to the drive and then issues.

but it could be on and the usb/cd just isn't set-up right and isn't loading the bootloader.

i just peaked through the iso and it should be booting the grub bootloader at the very least

i had this problem last year with another distro and unetbootin was fucking it up until i tried rufus and it worked. So idk, maybe i'll burn the iso myself and see if it works for me.

Nope. Just shrink your C drive or whatever and go for it. The elementary installer might make swap for you out of the space but I always do that myself i.e. make another partition = to the amount of RAM and manually choose where the installer installs stuff.

#!/bin/sh -e

do

echo "NO $f"

Encrypt every partition that has confidential files. If root is encrypted, they won't be able to boot, but they'll still be able to read any unencrypted partitions you have.
>Can't I just use a swapfile and keep it on the encrypted partition or will that mess with suspend features?
Suspend doesn't use swap and will work either way. Afaik hibernate won't work. You can put swap on an encrypted partition and have it ask for a password when you resume from hibernation though.
Whatever you do, you should not leave swap unencrypted.

Any data in your ram can be moved to swap. Any program data, the contents of your files or in the worst case your encryption keys.

Unless you need hibernation, putting a swapfile on an encrypted partition is fine and probably the easiest solution.

>1 boot and one for everything else (the root partition)
Boot doesn't contain any of your personal files and usually isn't encrypted, it could be used for some attacks though if someone has physical access to your machine. If you're paranoid about that, you could figure out how to encrypt it or use one of those scripts that check it on every reboot.

Puppy Linux is the braindead choice because that's literally what it was designed for, but assuming I'm not particularly targeting hyper-low-end machines and thus have some leeway on space and power, what are other good options?

Why not?
>>
>>59587360
Every linux live distro will only use ram unless you set up persistence (afaik only ubuntu can do that) or explicitly tell it to do write files somewhere else. If you actually bothered to read anything on the tails website, you would also immediately find the explicit info you were looking for.

and?

Arch is difficult/tedious to setup -- not just with installing, but creating a usable workflow if you're not using a DE. However, if you have the time/patience, it's worth the effort. It's frequently an end-of-the-road distro for a distrohopper simply because 1) it does exactly what they want it to do, 2) between official packages and the AUR, it has most of what they'd want, 3) pacman is still one of best package managers, and 4) one of the greatest documentation sources for desktop Linux is written primarily with them in mind (the Arch Linux wiki).

Nowadays, Arch is a lot less prone to crashes and other bad behavior, even if you fully update your system and restart every few days. So, realistically, you'd only not use Arch because you don't want to go through the setup process -- and I'm honestly not sure I'd do it again, either, even if I just copied off my current system.

Yeah, that's really amazing.

Obviously, you wouldn't constrain your browser to such a small size. Learn some common sense neo /g/
>>

Workspaces aren't an exclusive feature for tiling window managers, idiot.

The point was weather or not he should use tiling window managers with a small screen resolution and having multiple tiny windows on 1 desktop. If he wanted workspaces for each of his windows, he wouldn't be asking for tiled windows.

>my board
Wow, the cringe is big.
>>
>>59587941
You just don't get it do you?
Pro tip: you can have 1 window open on a tiling wm.

what's even the point then
why the fuck would I ask about a tiling WM in the first place if I don't want to utilize its tiling feature

1 window, in this case a browser, in workspace n. Other windows tiling in workspace n.

What the fuck am I reading. Did you guys ever hear of "find"? Also why redirecting grep to /dev/null when there's a -q flag? Why using bash syntax [[ in a sh script?

>>
>>59588634
find is recursive, you don't always want that. Also find commands tend to be longer / more complicated to type so I wouldn't use it unless I have to.

find has maxdepth. It's the better option in this case.
>>
>>59588725
>find is recursive
It has a depth flag.
find -maxdepth 1 -name '*a*'

>longer
ls *a* lists all files containing an 'a'.
You can go much more complex with globbing when you enable extglob and globstar.
>>
>>59588804
Yes, because
find -maxdepth 1 -exec ...{} \;

is so much easier to type than
for i in *
>>
>>59588842
This was for a script, typing doesn't really factor in here.
Also see above your post, you can include the shit you'd do in the loop into the find command.

Yes, exactly.

it says so in the readme anon.
>>
>>59589028
Why executing grep instead of -name -iname or -regex?
Why the -print at the end?
>>
>>59589097
thanks, looks like i've been stupid
>>
>>59588815
>-name '*a*'
That's another example why I avoid using find, or at least its -name and -iname options.
"| grep a" only requires one special character while with find I need - * and '

>>59588912
You can, I'm just saying that it's not necessary. Even if it's for a script, it's a pain in the ass to type.

>>59589028
Fair enough, find does make sense here.
Although that grep wouldn't even work. You should use -name or pipe the whole thing to grep.
>>
>>59589126
>"| grep a" only requires one special character while with find I need - * and '
It spawns 1 addition grep process for all files in the directory. If using -regex you just have a single process which does everything, which isn't only faster, but also COOLER
>>
>>59588671
yeah I've been thinking about trying that one

I also stumbled upon Liferea and FeedReader
latter one definitely LOOKS the best but not much info about it
>>
>>59589126
The loop setup that was suggested earlier requires more special characters than the find aproach.
>>
>>59589178
I really think an FF addon is the best thing for reading RSS. You just middleclick to open some interesting links as background tabs and move on to the next article, which is much more comfy than using an external newsreader in a different window. That's at least how I'm doing it.
>>
>>59589173
grep is pretty fast m8. Also, who cares about one more process in the age of 4GHz CPUs and 16GB+ RAM? It's instant either way, but with grep I save a second or two of typing.
>>
>there are people reading rss feeds

I have seen here before that there is some other debian user with this bug, maybe a poop in the repository.
The binutils file is shown as seriously bugged during the apt-get upgrade
>answered "p"
So I upgraded without it by restarting the apt-get upgrade
>done
But now i wonder how to fix this problem...It will appear again and it's important, i take a risk of crashing my system no? My system is already crashing since few days by rebootin itself after grub.
So just to be sure i've done:
>recovery
>grub-update
>mv etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorgmeh.backup
It starts, has not crashed (yet?) but i have to find what to do exactly with this binutils cause it will appear again in apt-get processus.
>>
>>59590690
i remember you asking before.
ask on the debian mailing lists, this one is probably beyond what we can help with.

/g/uys. I have a problem. My monitor's EDID is fucked up and I have to xrandr up everything again each time I log into my session so I can use the proper monitor's resolution instead of the failsafe VGA eye cancer.

I have Fedora 25 installed with X11, Wayland can't even let me use xrandr. How do I make Fedora override the EDID detection and just make it use the resolution I want permanently?

Not him but i have a question.
Why it is not here by default on some systems? And why does it makes the system crash when created? Mine is running without xorg since the beggining to avoid that, but driver works with it's initial conf so it's not really a problem, i juste can't configure a shit.
