Wow. I have an i5 M520 and everything is flying like a breeze (at least CPU wise).
There should be no problems as long as one uses the latest kernel.

There are idiots out there who believe that's something admirable or worthwhile. You're obviously an epic memer troll 4chan 2cool4school kid and only pretending to be retarded (you might actually be more retarded like them because you're pretending), but there are actual idiots out there.

It's not a security feature dipshit, it's stability padding and Manjaro gets the packages before 99% of the other distros besides Arch. If you hate on Manjaro for holding back ~30 days you must really hate everything else.

The don't "hold back", they test if it works without breaking before they push it through. That's a difference.

Semantics. And they mostly just watch the Arch forums to see what's causing problems.

What's the point of a hardened distro in a VM if your kernel isn't hardened as well?

Why in a VM? Are you going to put it on the metal now that you know you can do it?

This is what I was thinking is that its been years since the last time I used Gentoo I wanted to try it out to relearn how to do it and also to test how stable it is.

I have a question. I've been hopping distros for years now and I can't find one that does the following:

>pastel colors
>no transparancy, mostly opaque
>large, square window buttons

Basically I want a functional Windows 8 theme, straight lines, square windows, and solid colors.

I tried KDE with a metro theme but it just wasn't right. Any recommendations?

FONT QUESTIONS! Got some quickies... anyone know things about fonts in /fglt/? Halp if you do.

I'd like to just import all of the fonts from macOS Sierra and Windows 10 into my Arch install. Have both OSes handy and can just copy over shit.

1) What's the best place to put them in?

2) Any stability/performance issues with just bulk-copying fonts? I think MS font dir is 330MB and macOS is ~300MB.

3) What the fuck is TTC font extension and can I read it under Arch? I have a font called "Songti.ttc" and have no idea what the fuck it is and what that format is...

Thanks bros!

Apparently the thing wrong with my attempts to install Linux is that the Linux installer used has no way to correct itself and expects everything to be perfectly formatted for UEFI. And it shits itself to death if something is amiss and shares no possible solutions to the actual problem.

And this has been an issue for years.

Needs fixing.

Hey, wanted to ask a question regarding video playback / overall performance on Linux.
Running any distro (don't want to start a flame war, but primarily Arch) on my old laptop, video streaming performance is horrible as compared to Windows 10 running on the same machine. Am I just fucked because there's no good driver for my old machine, or is Linux' video performance worse just generally trash?
I just switched to Win10 again on it, since I only use this laptop to watch Youtube & other streaming. It outperforms any distro by far, the video playback is smooth and there are no audio delays or issues. But I hate the UI and keybinds. The whole OS is just not appealing to me. Is there a reason for this other than poor hardware support on linux, or should I try a more mainstream distro, like Ubuntu for Windows-like performance?

Yeah. The list of websites it is known to work with is currently at 1001. YouTube is only 0.000999 percent of what it's capable of, less actually since I'm sure it works on sites they don't have listed. I have never seen anywhere it didn't work. does anybody here run their own server? I've had a Centos 7 VPS for about a week now. Trying so set up email, webmail and Nextcloud on it. It's pretty challenging, but a good opportunity to improve my sysadmin skills.

fun moments:
- logging in with ssh for the first time: 140 unsucessful logins (bots trying to bruteforce ssh)
- after securing ssh I locked myself out of the server by changing the port in the config file, but not on the firewall..
- current: whenever I activate imap and smtp in the firewall, a dutch address tries to send email. No idea if it's malicious or not

Also, systemd is shit. Less than a week and already my whole syslogs were corrupted and journald didn't show the logs chronologically anymore.

It covers any service. Basically it watches log files and matches a regex. After multiple attempts it will block ip/port depending on what you want. SSH/Apache and other common stuff is built in, but it works with everything. I'd use it.

no fail2ban yet. I changed the port to 7555 and that stopped all automated attacks. Definitely considering it though, thanks for the advice.

Currently I'm working on getting TLS working with the mail server (postfix+dovecot) and then I'll have a consolidation phase of one week where I will take steps such as fail2ban in order to make sure that part of the server is secure.
Afterwards I'll open up huge security gaps again by installing apache..

Also, fail2ban is useless. The bots will just wait until the ban expires and continue trying to log in until they're done with their password list.

Well, I give up. If you think cluttering your file system with random software (even if it's just your home dir) is somehow cleaner than having files tracked by your package manger and compiling / installing by hand is somehow easier than letting a script do it, so be it.

>>
>>59579401
>but I don't remind how many times I have to delete files because some official packages start to complain about already existing files.
That's why you use your package manager. So that stuff like that doesn't happen. Installing your own package will replace the one you have installled. And when a new version is available in the repos, it will replace your own package, including every single file you installed.
>>
>>59579401

Why are you arguing guys? I am a developer, I patch a lot, I don't want to create packages each time I build something and log as root (yes log as root) to install a non tested package.

There have been a few cases where packaging changed and you had to manually delete files. All of those cases have been announced on the arch website.
I have no idea what made you think that installing your own packages could somehow cause this.

>I am a developer, I patch a lot, I don't want to create packages each time I build something
Doing it with software that you develop is completely fine. There's just no reason to do it if all you want is a new version.

>to install a non tested package.
If it's broken, all you have to do is downgrade. Fucking pacman -Suu will do it for you.

how do you check for that? check every day? heh. we're back to square one.
>>
>>59579529
No. I am talking about shitty official packages that use bugged scripts, packages will be stable only when execution of arbitrary code will be impossible.

>There have been a few cases where packaging changed and you had to manually delete files. All of those cases have been announced on the arch website.
Yes, and it annoy me to touch at that.

Git, ocaml, emacs and i3 never annoy me. NEVER.

Git, ocaml, emacs and i3 never annoy me. NEVER. So I am happy with my dirty install.
>If it's broken, all you have to do is downgrade. Fucking pacman -Suu will do it for you.
That's fucking complex compared to install in my HOME dir. I don't compromise the entire OS
