Omega can't actually make proper co-axial escapements yet. They fail in accomplishing the things that the creator's versions did. Rolex have longer service intervals despite the supposed inferiority of the movement.
>>59537784
>PERPETUAL JUST
I need a cheap but good 38mm watch in used condition with a black face.
Recommendations?
Holy shit the new Grand Seiko reissues are amazing
>>59538124
>"cheap"
Means different things for different people.
Post price bracket.
Also you have to tell people what kind of watch.
Dressy, sport, diver, pilot etc.?
>>59538124
Try ebay. Filter mens watches with your requirements, set the minimum price to maybe 30$ and select a brand you know to be a good one. Then see what you can get. If nothing you like comes up, try a different brand.
I found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/322454156831 (pic related), but as >>59538204 said, you didn't really give me much to go with...
>>59537875
>inferiority of the movement
Elaborate? I understand the modern coaxials are meant to compete with modern Rolex but could you really classify them as superior?
>>59538188
Pictures?
>>59538231
Never buy curry shit
>>59538304
There's an article on Hodinkee.
Also GS is separate from Seiko now.
And the new Cucktail Time collection is ass.
>>59538342
Wow, that is nice.
IMO good move to separate the brand. No one wants to see SEIKO GRAND SEIKO
This can give it a lot more of a prestigious image, hopefully the price doesn't jump too high
>>59538342
>>59538188
I don't personally like the GS hands that much, but they sure could teach Rolex a lesson or two on the lengths of the hands.
>>59538450
>The price at launch will be $7,200, and expect ref.SBGR305 to be available in July. It will be a limited edition of 968 pieces.
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/grand-seiko-sbgr305-independent-introducing
>>59538457
I like them myself, the finishing and the facets make them play with the light really nicely. But I see where you're coming from, they're classic and unoriginal. That's Grand Seiko as a whole.
>>59538464
That's a different model. I'm not sure how they fucked up so bad with the "AUTOMATIC" text though.
>>59538490
I like the finish as well, it's the shape that bothers me. I don't like these pointed hands, but I do understand why many do. They're not bad, just something I don't personally like.
>>59538502
Yeah, it clashes with the Grand Seiko logo quite badly. It could work if the AUTOMATIC was a light gray, as well as the Japan made at the bottom. Now the logo and the text pop out as much, which isn't very nice.
>>59538124
Seiko Sarb033
>>59538124

Bulgari now has the thinnest auto movement in production, 2.23mm, the cal BVL 138
Finally toppled VC/APs cal 1120 which was 2. 45 mm
Not a huge fan of the design but it's cool to see these fashion brands actually use their money towards research not just hyping shitters

>>59537784
Anyone saved a picture of that guys destroyed Air King?
>flies off the roof of the car into the path of another, oncoming car, gets fucking destroyed, 5000$ loss
>Air King
It didn't fly so good.
>>59538464
Would be nice to see grand seiko do more wild case shapes like the old 62GS.
>>59538796
You could make the nicest dress watch ever with that movement, but of course they manage to produce a fuck-ugly watch, with a fuck-ugly movement.
>At launch, the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatique will retail for $13,000
If I want to strap dogshit to my wrist and vomit everytime I look at it, I can do it for much cheaper than $13,000
>>59538796
>thinnest movement
>not thinnest watch
What's the point?
>date window
Every fucking time. Does anyone seriously like date windows in new homages to vintage pieces?
>>59539158
I'm fine with the date window here. The bezel is way too wide though. It completely throws off the balance of the design.
Also, sadly, most people want date windows in their watches. They don't put them in for a laugh; watches with date sell massively better.
>>59539158
I don't mind if it's in a good place. That Autavia looks alright, but I wish TAG wouldn't just write only "Heuer" on their modern TAG-Heuer dogshit, it will get very confusing twenty years from now.
Also an example for a bad date window execution would be the Ripley Seiko remake. Fucking seriously? Couldn't they have put it somewhere around 4:30?
>>59539104
Becuase the thinnest watch is, while impressive, a quartz.
>>59539208
It is a quartz, but it's not that citizen.
I think I figured out something. Aren't Vostok Amphibia crowns the way they are because the movements were originally hand-wind only, unmodified for a screw down crown? If it didn't have the clutch you couldn't screw it in when fully wound.
Am I on to something? How did western manual wind divers solve this? Did their keyless work had an innermost, disconnected position or what?
>>59539229
Well...
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1655017763/cst-01-the-worlds-thinnest-watch/updates
>>59539251
Neat. Only took about 3 decades to beat the concord's record lel.
is this spring bar tool okay or should I get something else? $15 the sweet spot or should I just get a $7 version? Don't want to buy twice but I also don't want to overspend if they're all just chink shit anyway
https://www.amazon.com/Spring-Bar-Pin-Watch-Tool/dp/B0129CJNUY/ref=sr_1_2?s=apparel&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1490271650&sr=1-2&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=spring+bar+tool&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_72%3A2661618011
Just got my Vostok
The strap is pretty shit. But I like the watch
>>59538342
While it's nice, it's too much of a grandpa watch for me.
Will the new Grand Seiko be more conservative and boring?
>>59539266
With photon power. That watch will never stop ticking.
>>59539190
>4:30
No because those are cancer unless it's not crooked which we all know it would be.
>>59539236
Other screw-down crowns are spring-loaded, so they disengage the same?
>>59538269
George Daniels' (inventor of the co-axial) watches never need any lubrication of the escapement because of the way they're built. He painstakingly made every piece of his watches by hand though, and when he took the design to other watch makers they found it almost impossible to copy, so basically none of them even tried to use it/
Omega have tried, but their version still needs lubrication anyway, in a much more complex way than a lever escapement, so the whole point of the original design has been removed. It's just a marketing tool which is more expensive to service.
>>59539208
You obviously know I was talking about thinnest full-rotor automatic, right?
>>59539236
No, it's for shock resistance. If you bump into the crown, even when locked, the stem isn't engaged so the movement doesn't get moved.
>>59539329
Either get a $1 tool or just get a bergeon 6767.
>>59539370
>Will the new Grand Seiko be more conservative and boring?
It will be just as conservative and boring as it's always been.
>>59538188
Seiko with their enameled dial line and now Grand Seiko with these incredible re-issues basically stole Baselworld. By miles the best classical designs unveiled this year.
>>59539643
>>59538188
>>59538450
I think /wt/ would praise a shit if it was produced by Grand Seiko.
>>59539496
That's what people say, but is it really the reason?
>>59539329
I have that tool but only used it once. Seems to be fine.
>>59538342
>And the new Cucktail Time collection is ass.
What did he mean by this?
>>59539686
Probably talking about these ones.
>>59539659
You have that backwards. Grand Seiko is one of the only companies that unveiled any new classically designed watches, rather than modern oversized gaudy monstrosities. It's the classical styling combined with a level of workmanship fair for the pricepoint that is the cause of /wt/ liking them.
That's not to say that everything GS does is great. Their chronographs are all hideous. So are their divers.
>>59539705
Yeah, those are pretty bad. I am really looking forward to this blue 62mas inspired design though.
>>59539643
The diver reissue is pretty great too, although too expensive for me.
>>59539659
Seiko makes a lot of terrible watches though.

>>59539817
Poopoo peepee, but there is a version that's completely like the original, baton hands and all.
Too bad it's four kiloshekels. But at least it has the 8L35 and not just a 4R/6R.
>>59540111
Totally different pricepoints. I'd be looking at the blue one as a cheap waterproof beater to replace an SKX while having the virtue of being blue. Can always swap the hands once the modders get to work on it.
>>59540159
Either way this gives me hope for Seiko doing a 6105 remake.

what. the. mother. fuck.
>>59540503
well...
you're going to get shit from /wt/ for buying a Sinn in the first place.
however:
are you convinced that you're going to love it?
or are you on the fence about it?
if you're not completely convinced, you might want to take a look at the retailer's return policy
>>59540568
I'm getting a present and they insist it should be a new watch (from the store), so for that price I'm either getting a Sinn or Oris, no much choice really. And between the two, I'd prefer Sinn from what I see online.
how often do you actually use your watch instead of jerking off about it?
>>59540586
fuck it man, just go for it
getting a watch as a gift though can be a personal challenge though if you don't like it
more so than buying one yourself and just being stuck with something you don't like
which one are you going to go for? can you post a link to it?
>>59540601

i can't say that i'm really a fan, but i can see how they appeal to some people
i actually like the one you referenced and i'd wear it
go for it anon
>>59540670
Well what would be your choice in that price range? If it were up to me I'd put the money into a Bond but it must be new.
>>59540404
Too bad they ruined the dial and bezel. The original aegis was perfection, this one looks like shit.
>>59540689
how much is that watch?
>>59540720
thanks anon, at least i won't have to suffer with a ruined dial & bezel
>>59540723
It says on the link, 1000EUR for rubber or leather strap, 1300EUR for metal. I could go like 500EUR over that, but there is really no much choice up until around 2500EUR for brand new.
>>59540723
$1300 MSRP last I checked.
>>59540740
>>59540745
that seems like a tough price range. i mean: it seems difficult to find a 'nice' new watch in that price range
i'd probably just go with the Sinn if you actually like it.
i'd get it on a steel bracelet
>>59538796

Truly tiny independents like Roger Smith aren't there, but you got more than you could get just walking into boutiques on Madison avenue.

You need a dark brown to contrast against the highly polished case, and white thread to match with the lume on the hands because nothing else on the dial is really white.

Yes. The original (ETA) Black Bay was a great design, as was the Heritage Chrono before it, and the original Pelagos.

You live in an age where the time is on everything, it's on your computer, it's in your car, it's on your phone. There are very few times you will not be in view of a clock or have your phone.
Wearing a watch is a fashion statement and people like watches that don't look shit.

^ that is a true autism watch
even the guy in the video is level 100 autism just like me.
but srs smart watches are for faggots and fat people "trying" to lose weight the "smart" way.
you want a smart watch, buy a datalink or e-link and you can store data on it.
or a casio DB6000
telememo digital watch.
those smart watches will be eventually used to track people down. lol
>>59544590
that's because it's a knockoff.
he bought a smart watch, which is utter shit, and on top of that a fake one, which makes it even worse than shit.

>>59544788
Yeah I have a negative review on this watches dial too. It is ugly.
>>59544795
lol how?
these are basically usb watches used to carry data onto space. they are fully programmable
they where used by astronauts in the mid 90's as a way to secure data to themselves.
Microsoft made them with timex to be used in space.
those smart watches are used for faggots to feel relevant and rich. and the pretend they don't have a small dick.

All LCD watches look cheap and plasticy
We only like the terrorist because it's a $10 watch.
>>59545294
F91W-1 are good, but too many faggot hipsters wear them and too many assholes think that because its a 10$ watch it makes it good.
those are mass produced now to be sold in 3rd world countries.
when I was in peru last summer, all the high school kids I say there and some young adults were wearing the f91w-1 or w85 or a cheaper clone version of it from china ( the originals are made in japan)
those were used in the Philippines as a timer for some mussie asshole trying to blow something up again.
but it's clear you know nothing about watches.
so it's okay.
>all CASIO under 50 dollars watches look cheap and plasticky.
this one is by fat the best digital watch ever made. super rare and sought after. it will go into history as one of the most important watches in history right along side the original polar red.

Digital could be superior in readability and accuracy, but they just don't look as good as a traditional watch. Also, readability is not really problem for most, and accuracy is just a selling point: why would anyone care if a watch is 15 or 30 seconds off?

/k/ here. You've been misled, most likely intentionally by someone trying to trick you into looking foolish. Wearing your watch upside down is as goofy as small-of-back pistol carry and you should immediately move your watch to the correct position.

I love the subtle sunburst effect on the dial of the SARB when sunlight hits it just right & the fact that you can see that the dial is a really dark brown rather than black.

>>59554293
>they wear so small
This.
39 is small without a bezel.
A watch's visual size is determined by the diameter of the crystal and dial.
>>59554370
And the lugs. We see lots and lots of photos on here of people wearing goofy huge watches with lugs standing way off their wrists because they believed this ridiculous horseshit about the dial being all that really matters for size.
>>59554370

Back then, rolex submariners weren't so much luxury as they were among the best and most dependable tool watches.
There were no cheap quartzes.
You either got an accurate (thus expensive) mechanical watch, or you got a cheap one that kept shit time.
>>59554608
If you wanted your watch to keep working you'd have to spend quite a bit of money on it to withstand those conditions.
Your idea seems to be that the watch is going to break so it had better be a cheap one. The message of the advertisement is that because you can't accept the watch breaking, you should pick one that can handle the task.
>>59554650
The watch wont break but it's going to get fucked up with scratches.
>>59554664
>>59554669
>Working in tight confines with heavy equipment wont cause scratches.
I think you're the stupid one here.
>>59554635
The Deepstar was built in 1965. But let's be generous and say that since the advertisement is set in Helvetica, the earliest possible date is 1957, at the first release of Helvetica. I mean, this could have been about people very early in the Deepstar project, right?
Accounting for inflation, $230 in 1957 dollars would be about $2,000 today.
>>59554664
So? It is being sold as work equipment. Would you worry that your expensive drill press is going to be scratched or possibly broken in the course of drilling? Not if your job is to drill things on a drill press. You'll get one that can handle the workload.
You really don't seem to understand the advertisement.
>>59554693
