Android is an even bigger botnet than iOS, out of the box.

The difference is that you can flash a no-gapps custom ROM and de-botnet it, unlike an Apple device. Well, you can de-botnet it as far as a phone is able to be de-botnetted.

Other than that, iThings very much want you to go full Apple. They want to work with other Apple products and services, so everything's "in the ecosystem". I don't want that. I want something that is first and foremost a standalone device that doesn't assume anything about other devices I use.

1. Security

Apple users will look to the latest CIA leaks and believe that they have a more secure product due to iOS having less vulnerabilities overall. A cursory look at this, however, will reveal that all but 5 of the Android vulnerabilities listed had already been patched, while 10 of the iOS vulnerabilities were still unpatched, and the scope of access they granted was larger, with at least one vulnerability allowing the kernel to be exploited. In all reality, Apple has a history of producing vulnerable software, and responding poorly to it. For the longest time, Safari was consistently the first browser to be compromised in browser hacking competitions, and it still doesn't do too well. Apple likely does not take security seriously, as they took over six months to fix a root escalation vulnerability in Mac OS X, and their initial patch did not actually solve the problem. In 2015, Mac OS X and iOS were the first and second most vulnerable software platforms in terms of number of vulnerabilities.

And I know at this point someone is going to point out that thieves can get iCloud locked out of a phone. This isn't really a priority for security for most people. If the data's encrypted, then the most someone can do is wipe the disk and use the phone for themselves, should they gain physical access to the phone. If we can maintain the assumption that the phone is not going to leave the possession of the owner or a trusted friend of said owner, the only real thing that matters is software security, not physical security.

2. Freedom

I don't have to execute a security vulnerability to gain the ability to run any arbitrary application on my phone, without the permission of Google. I can run completely without the Play Store if I so choose. If I decide to gain root privileges on my phone, I can do so without executing a security vulnerability, in a way that guarantees only I have root access, and which does not prevent me from getting OS updates without losing root.
