Wears great though, sits a little higher than I expected but I like it.

Also the lume is crazy bright. I can see it glow in the middle of the day.

>>59484923

he's talking only about how it appears visually. "wears" includes a claim about how it fits physically, which has to account for lug curvature and so forth.
>>
>>59484138
Mako, but ideally with a new bezel insert.
>>
>>59484941
>"wears" includes a claim about how it fits physically
You're just adding some arbitrary requirement to the definition. Take a watch without lugs for example and you can still determine how it "wears". There is nothing wrong with him stating it "wears" smaller based on appearance, because in most cases that's literally all there is: appearance.
>>
>>59485000
Yeah.. the hands on the mako are definitely nicer, think I'll go with the blue face too.
Would it be easier to replace the bezel on the mako or the hands on the ray?
I'm guessing the bezel, I might put a pepsi bezel on it
>>
>>59484941
"wears" meaning how the fit looks visually which accounts for lug curvature and so forth
>>
>>59485031

>>
>>59485128
>neither of you seem to understand
I don't think you do. There is nothing wrong with saying it wears smaller than it actually is. That is exactly how everyone uses the term. Nobody literally measures the curve of the surface of their wrist and degrees of angles on the watch, they just fucking wear it and look at it. Does it look okay? Maybe, maybe not.

Christ this thread is more autistic than usual.
>>
>>59485366

maybe i've been unclear.

to say that a watch "wears" smaller than it measures means that it looks and feels smaller than the dimensions indicate. this is often a function of case and lug geometry.

when people are only trying to say that it looks smaller, they say it looks smaller.

i am trying to teach you something that you do not understand. this is not an argument. i am dispensing information to you.

>>
>>59485381
The majority of a watch is its "look" so referring to its "wear" based solely on its "look" is typically. Therefore "looks smaller" and "wears smaller" are used interchangeably and nobody ever had a problem with this until you came along. Not understanding the nuances of English and that it's not always 100% literal says a lot about you. Stop being so dense.

>>59484881
This is the single biggest thing that pisses me off when looking at watch photos on the internet.

The watch is meant to be worn behind the bumpy bone on your wrist (technically the end of your ulna). With the strap tight enough so it cannot slip over it. Anything else and you a wearing a piece of bling like a nigger. You're not a nigger are you?

Also, wearing it over or in front of that bone like pic related causes a stupid amount of pressure to be exerted on the crown/stem, when you do dumb shit like pic related and let it dig into the back of your hand. You wouldn't believe the amount of stems I've replaced or had to try and get straight again because of people doing this dumb shit.

You have a nice timepiece, look after it.

Horseshit. They're not good at any price. They're upmarket Daniel Wellingtons designed for the same demographic who likes wearing their sister's pants and having polyamorous relationships with their gf. The watches are marketed for fags and the only people that want them are weak, twiggy fags and these dogshit watches will NEVER EVER be accepted.

i wouldn't be surprised if the price declines after the initial apple watch buzz wears off. the only reason this is interesting to anyone is that jobs's company released a watch.

a good number of my coworkers who had bought apple watches are starting to realize that it's just an ugly box-shaped smartphone notification buzzer that straps onto your wrist and also happens to tell time. they are putting them down for more specialized tracking bands or traditional watches. so it looks like seiko may have got in just under the wire here.
>>
>>59488600
The best price you'd get is probably right after they sell out and the last few retards still want one.

A few years from now, people will realize how fucking shit Apple and Jobs are/were and it'll be worth the $5 it actually is

>>

Thanks, for the price point you really cannot get a better mechanical chrono. I love it.
>>
>>59488613
Really depends

If they have any sort of degrading vision you're going to want something very straight forward, clean and easy to read.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E756F8O/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Take a look at that 40mm, clean, easy to read, with a traditional American style.

One thing you should be mindful of is also the fine motor skills of your grandfather. When I gave a watch to my grandfather, I asked him if he would be okay with the leather strap it came on, but when it came to him trying to put it on with the pin and buckle, he struggled. But that's why I had an expansion bracelet right there ready to go. He really found it easy to put on and loved it after that. Giving a gift that they struggle to use due to old age can be.. embarrassing.

So I bought the watch, bracelet and springbar tool for him, and simply just put the leather bracelet and springbar tool inside the watch box in case they're needed in the future.

>>59488442
They're pretty great. I love mine.

Keep in mind, I often see some of those deadbeat second habrings floating around for decently low prices. Deadbeat seconds is not something you ever see much, especially on watches under 100k. But I think a lot of the people who bought them and then all decided to sell them are newbies who wanted an exclusive watch, but they just couldn't appreciate the idea of a mechanical ticking like that.

This guy has it for <3k

I have a crown-operated chronograph from them.

I really like the appeal of a chronograph that doesn't drill additional holes into the case for pushers. It just makes so much sense to minimize the number of entry points.

And from a passive observer, who maybe only knows a little bit about watches, my watch hardly appears much different from a 6497 watch -- until you turn the crown and see those two hands at 12 separate and begin to log chronograph minutes and seconds.

Stealthy watch, if you like that kind of thing. (Keep mind it's still decently big, you can potentially have the watch sent back to habring to have the complications changed, and it needs to be big enough to handle it.)

I wouldn't suggest jumping seconds unless you actually like it. "Not minding" it is what the newbie who bought it probably thought and then sold it because they found it uninspiring.

You should read some of the articles about them and their website if you're curious about them and the direction they've been taking their watches.

the popularity of nomos does in fact seem to be confined to a small segment of aesthetically deficient morons. when you ask people who are not watch hobbyists about nomos, you will get a completely blank look. it is a design that does not resonate at all with the general population. if you told them how much it cost, they would be extremely confused.

face it: there is something fucking wrong with you for liking nomos.

The super high beat stopwatches are pretty neat. Too bad it's not practical to have something beating that fast all the time as a running seconds.

For super high frequency running seconds I'll take tuning fork movements. On that note, seems like debethune has been working on a magnetic not-quite-a-tuning-fork movement. No idea where they are on that or if they stopped development of it (would be a shame if they did).

Here are the simple facts: Nomos are literally the first new company to develop the capacity to design and manufacture mechanical movements including escapements on a series production basis since the 1960s. They join Vostok, Orient, Citizen, Seiko, ETA and Rolex as the only non haute horlogerie companies capable of this.

Developing this capability took a several year and ~12 million Euro investment in escapements and a further ~2 million Euro investment in designing the ultra-thin DUW 3001 calibre. These are enormous investments from a company with an annual sales volume of 10,000 - 20,000 units, and as a result must necessarily be reflected in increased unit prices.

In an affordable luxury watch market heavily dominated by Chinese-cased ETA-powered marketing-driven shitters, any watchmaker that makes the investments required to become a manufacture and actually increase the technical diversity of series produced mechanical movements should be applauded no matter whether you like the aesthetics of their product line. To the extent that Nomos succeeds by following this path, it may serve to encourage more investment in the technical aspects of watchmaking by other companies rather than just investing in more value engineering (i.e. cost-cutting) and more advertising.

Just in the last 10 years we have gone from a $1,000-$4,000 market where every single watch was powered by an ETA movement to one where you can now choose between ETA, Tudor, Nomos, and Seiko (8rXXs, 8LXXs). How can this development be regarded as bad for people interested in horology, regardless of whether you would personally buy any of those watches yourself? If only Miyota and Seiko would add micro-adjuster models to their ebauche offerings and Tudor would begin to use their in-house movement in more models, we could return to an era of real competition in movements in production watches not seen since the glory days of the 1970s.

I just ordered a Hirsche Ranger, hopefully this will work.

The shiny case and ornate hands need dressing down.

Why does no one use the old lume that turns orange anymore? You know the lume everyone likes.
>>
>>59496153
Because it's radioactive and thus a bitch to try ship anywhere.

It's radioactive and probably banned to use it in paint anymore. I can't stand luminova honestly, the constant green glow looks ugly and makes the dial remind me of kid's glow in the dark toys.
>>
>>59496181
This. I hate that it's green in all but direct sunlight.

good thing they use blue lume now

I've got watches from the 1970s where the lume has gone green not orange. What gives?

Yeah chromalight is a massive improvement but tritium is irreplaceable in terms of patina and it's "soft" look.

What watch should I war to a client meeting next week?

Invicta 89626
Seagull 1963
Seiko 1982 SQ
Seiko Alpinist

Note: They're already a customer
>>
>>59496354
The 1963, but why would you expose your customers to shitters?
>>
>>59496398
The fake reason: Shows of wealth can be bad when meeting clients as they think you're getting rich with their money

The real reason: I'm too poor to buy non shitters
>>
>>59495847
/wt/ will say nay to mostly everything.
if you like it: do it fgt

Will a quality leather strap keep smelling of leather?

Definitely the Chinese shitter so they know for a fact that you're autistic

It's not a fake reason when you have nice watches. That's when you have to find stealthy pieces.

The last was actually one of you fags, not a cute gill.

Do girls even comment on watches?

The only person I've had comment on my watch was a guy at work joking about me being a terrorist for wearing a casio terrorist.

Kek. Other than the "Rolex" and the crown. That looks JUST like my Bagel.
It was probably the same watch before they did that to the face.
>>

>What watches do you have?
orient ray and a couple shitters, so i'm not really surprised.
but i'm a student, nobody even cares about watches. the nicest watches i ever saw on people's wrists in my life were another ray, a halmiton khaki and an SKX...
>>

What can you do about that?

Really? Other than one old dude anyone that noticed my stuff were students at my college. Best I've seen around are Tags.
Not that they're good, but they're expensive.
