In this case mostly about tribology: how to avoid excessive wear. Wheels of same material in contact causes wear, using different materials will help. This is not related to use of lubricants.

well, there's also amagnetic materials, materials with different rigidity to make different escapements (see the genequand escapement, that is only possible because of silicon); there's also different case materials like ceramics, for weight and looks...

Yes. It is. Swatch did that on purpose. It was entirely in their power to omit the 15 or use a different movement or dial size to change the alignment, but they decided instead to use the dial to remind you that you cheapest out on an "entry level Swiss" piece of shit.

This is the same reason there is always something off about Tissot designs. They exist as wrist mounted Omega advertisements.

They also use a cheap plastic dial and eleborate movements now and then. They do use sapphire glass I'll give them that. But you're right the design is "OK" but not great.

Omega's are not really worth it imho, a lot of their designs are based on ETA'S. I would go for a Rolex, LeCoultre or Tudor given the choice.

Not that ETA is bad, it's great for serviceability but paying a premium for a mass produced movement is just a ripoff.

hey /g/, I've been given the task of creating a spit roast for a friends firepit. They want a "clockwork" mechanism to power it and have a few large gears from a rusted old clothes press they had lying around as well as a workshop with welder that I can use.

My only issue is that I know very little about clockwork mechanisms.

Does anyone in /g/ know any good books about the basics of watchmaking? Although judging by the size of the gears they have, I might need more of a grandfather clock guide.

Help plz

What you want us a big weight on a string for power, and then an escapement using a pendulum to keep it going at a regular rate

There's a whole bunch of videos and articles online about this kind of thing if you searched what I mentioned.

Keep in mind, the amount of torque to turn the spit might be a lot of it's not nicely made. You can attach the spit directly to the escape wheel, or create gears off of the escape wheel to gear up or down.

To elaborate, signs it's fake:
Doctors without borders red 12 but no dwb signature (all cheap fakes use the red 12 for some reason)
Lume plots from the ahoi on a tangente dial
Subdial on the same plane as the dial
Wrong lugs for the case
Crown is way too small
Minute markers are too thick
Hands are the wrong size, all of them
Subdial is the wrong size
The hour and minute hand don't seem to taper near the end, although it could be the picture
The dial colour is off
The dial printing seems like bad quality, but again it's hard to tell from the shit picture

So yeah.

The swiss factor or even the 'niche' factor doesn't really apply here as its produced by swatch with minimal swiss manufacturing.

Can anyone recommend a few elegant watches under $300? I want something kind of understated and professional, nothing flashy. I don't care if it's quartz as long as the materials are relatively high-quality. I like pic related but I don't want to drop $1500 and I'm not an enthusiast so the movement isn't important to me. (I know that might be considered blasphemy ITT.)

Thanks in advance for any helpful recommendations.

Not exactly a dresswatch but I have a 60s seamaster cosmic. Assume your watch will need a service no matter what the seller says, and price it in. Any decent watchmaker should be able to work on old omegas. You'll be price toughed a bit because it's Omega; think 300-400 in the us. Don't take it to Omega they will charge a ton and replace/repaint/polish parts of the watch even 8f you tell them not to.

quartz is a movement type. it's what you think of as a "normal" watch that uses a battery. they are cheaper to make and more accurate than mechanical watches (like a seiko 5), but they are less fun and there is a relatively low ceiling on how well-made a quartz watch you can get.

there are seiko 5s with no numbers on the dial. the words "seiko 5" do not imply anything at all about the appearance of the dial.

"seiko 5" means (basically) that you get a 7S26 mechanical movement in a water-resistant case.
>>
>>59514429
>"seiko 5" means (basically) that you get a 7S26 mechanical movement in a water-resistant case.

Seiko 5:
1. Diaflex (unbreakable mainspring)
2. Diashock (shock resistant)
3. Automatic winding
4. Day/date indication
5. Water resistant
>>
>>59514471

let's take a closer look.

>1. Diaflex (unbreakable mainspring)

>4. Day/date indication

these are all non-optional features of 7S26.

Is there a vintage Seiko prestige pyramid somewhere? I'm wondering where my newest purchase is placed

Look on eBay for "vintage watch" and get a nice mechcanical with that style. Pro tip: add soviet/ Russian to your search if you want to keep the price down.

50m is pretty good for when the 5 series came out. the standard has not changed
>>
>>59516965

are you stupid?

the point i was making is that the seiko 5 series is about the five features (four in the movement and one in the case), and nothing about the dial.

go on, wipe that drool off your chin and go follow the posts up.
>>
>>59517021
what the fuck are you talking about?

i guess the answer is yes, you are stupid.

The 83xx is a mid-range Suwa Seikosha produced caliber from the mid to late 1960s with an 18,000 bph beat rate, manual-winding, quick-set for the date, but no micro-adjuster for the regulator arm.
>>
>>59516230
Not selling it just yet, but it easily keeps time to within +/- 5 s/d.
>>
What's the point of these "deployants"
>>
>>59517153

it keeps the leather from wearing out as fast. with a tang buckle you have to bend it backwards a lot every time to put it on or take it off. it is also a bit safer in that you are less likely to drop it.

>>59517124

No, he is right, the Seiko 5 series is named after the five features they deliver at a budget pricepoint. You were oy confused because of your plebian status.

If you are interested in reading up a bit more about the subject here is a detailed article on the 8306:

You feed the end through the keepers before fully engaging the clasp, reducing strain on the strap.
>>
>>59517148
Well let me know if you do

So if I buy a $120ish Orient Capital, how's it any different from any random $30 quartz watch? Are the materials much better? Is the cost actually justified, or is it just a pile of shit for normies who don't know any better?
>>
>>59517891
Will do.
>>
>>59517196
where did I disagree with that point?
>>
>>59513397
Do you put your own crystals on?
>>
>>59517901
Buying a casio or orient or other decent name will get you a better quartz movement than some chink mall watch or walmart special, the materials are probably a bit better in the orient but I am not familiar with their quartz pieces

No, I got my local watchmaker to do it. I cleaned the bezel from the original crystal that was in this watch (which was covered in sloppy nasty looking glue), gave it to my watchmaker, he glued in the sapphire and put the crystal in the watch.

He did I'd while I waited because he's bro-tier though.

Excellent quality for the price, but their entire design department should be ritually crucified. Cannot for the life of them make a watch that isn't dadcore as fuck.

>>59518132
Do you happen to know of camille fournet ships to milkbagland? I'm bidding on a linen dial 5740 right now and I'd like to replace the strap once I get it.

do ETA day-dates click over right at midnight or do they roll over a couple hours?

Wishing my watchmaker was as bro-tier as you Canadian watch maker. Mine has manged to fuck up the calendar mechanism on my 6146 Grand Seiko. I am looking for an alternative to send it too.

Infuriating. You could shoot al of archer watches an email if you're okay with shipping it. I've only read praise for him online.

The generic sapphire crystals in my blue LM Special and my 52KS Special are both from Perrin, a watch parts store.

>>59518420
I've never dealt with them, sorry. What style of strap are you looking for?

>>59518454
Have you tried googling "<your geographical area>" "vintage" "watchmaker" to see if there is anyone local with a good reputation?

If you are in Canada or willing to ship to Canada, consider Al Archer as >>59518505 suggested, or get in touch with Shane Ede in Toronto (Shane is who I use).

>>59518592
No, I'm the fat one, not my watchmaker.
>>
>>59519115
>What style of strap are you looking for?

Croc, either round or square scale. Not sure if syrupland disallows shipment of real croc leather though.
>>
>>59519134
You want real croc? What are you willing to spend?
>>
>>59518587
and how long does it take for the 4R35 and 6R15 to roll over? are they comparable to the 7S36 or is it faster?
>>
>>59519167
Unless fake croc is just as pliable, yes. The camille fournets are ~$220 for croc, so that'd be the max I guess.
>>
>>59519115
Shane got fat buddy. Either that or he was wearing a t shirt so baggy when i was there i couldn't tell what was underneath

Anything similar to the Swatch Once Again? I need a watch that has very minimal design, a date and day window, a thin case, and water resistance. Lume or a light would be a nice plus.

I'd get one, even with it being a Swatch, but buyers report a loud ticking sound, and after owning a Weekender I want to avoid that.
>>
>>59519457
>I need a watch that has very minimal design,

this ought to be entertaining
>>
>>59519213
So far, it seems Camille Fournet would have to be contacted directly about shipping to Canada, but they may.

Perrin has genuine crocodile straps but I have no idea how the quality compares to CF.

As far as importing genuine crocodile to Canada, as long as it comes with a CITIES certificate it will not be an issue at customs.

If croc pattern is good enough, get I touch with Combat Straps in Montreal. He does excellent custom work.

I am deciding between the Seiko and Hamilton myself. I feel like the SARB033 is the clear choice but the slow datewheel may trigger my autism since I'll actually be working and checking my watch overnight soon.

I'll probably get over it and get the SARB but I'm still deciding

>>59520253
What do you mean by slow? The 6r15c should finish the date change within 15 minutes of midnight.
