But really, why would you? Storage is cheap as hell and it's only going to get cheaper. The fact that you have 3 fucking terabytes of music is probably the more autistic fact, not that it's in FLAC. I have about 300GB of FLACs and I think that's pretty excessive, but I've listened to most of it at some point in the last few years. If space is really a concern then buy another HDD, unless you're poor as fuck there's little reason to delete stuff or seriously conserve space in this day and age.

average bitrate is an average bitrate of the file. it's average. every mp3 file has average bitrate.

if audio was compressed with constant compression then average will be equal to that constant bitrate.
if it was compressed with variable bitrate it will be average between all the highs and lows.

to claim that file can have constant, variable or average bitrate is idiotic.

lame can be set to compress trying to maintain preset average bitrate. but resulting file is still ***variable bitrate*** and that variable bitrate should average somewhere near preset.
