Anyone know of a program to switch the keyboard mapping to that of a different language?
I do a lot of writing in various languages and would like to be be able for example, to go from writing in English to writing in Russian without hassle.
I was thinking of writing a script which changes the keyboard mapping by a push of a button, such as the ThinkVantage button (I do all my work on an x60t) and just putting little stickers with the letters on the keyboard, but that seems like a lot of work for multiple languages, and I'm not sure how to go about writing a script which allows me to chose between multiple selections using only one button.
Is it possible to write a script which will display a small window and allow me to choose from multiple options?

Which is easily replaceable with any other userland
>>
>>59468757
Because in the 90s the hardware performance was too shit to accomodate the massive overhead of constant mode switching.
I don't know how anyone knowledgeable about the differences beetween monolithic and microkernel architectures can not figure this one out on it's own.

If it wasn't for performance we'd all be using Hurd or similar multiserver microkernel type. It's absolutely fucking based.
>>
>>59468813
The GNU project is a enormously large operating system (the core utils, libs, cli, etc. are just a part of it); combined with a kernel, the GNU/Linux system. Removing GNU makes it to something different, but it doesn't make a kernel a complete operating system you can run and operate with.
>>
>>59468757
it's a pain in the ass to develop and just takes forever
one of the reasons why the hurd development is so fucking slow

But i dont run any part of the gnu userland in my system. Forcing gnushit on everyone, which in reality people use other userlands in replacement of gnushit,is wrong and shows the combative tactics freetards take to force their software on people.

Also, the kernel is loaded FIRST, which then tells the software how to talke to the hardware.

And various other forced mentions, such as the title of this thread that was combativly taken over by freetards last year, asserting that you must use gnu to post in this thread, when in reality the common factor here should be Linux since there are various other userlands that work with the Linux Kernel instead of just gnushit

The expression “the Linux kernel” can easily be misunderstood as meaning “the kernel of Linux” and implying that Linux must be more than a kernel. You can avoid the possibility of this misunderstanding by saying or writing “the kernel, Linux” or “Linux, the kernel”.

Okay guys, I'm trying to set up LIRC with IR over the 3.5mm microphone port. It supports this with the alsa_audio driver. I have everything rigged up and when I press a button on my TV remote it goes
remote -> RF receiver -> 3.5mm into computer -> the mic input bar in Ubuntu's pulseaudio sound control panel moves to indicate a signal

However, when I use lircd with the command
lircd --driver=audio_alsa --device=hw:0@44100,r lircd.conf

I get no indication of a signal when using irrecord.

Furthermore, when I run
arecord -d 10 /tmp/test-mic-input.wav

I can clearly hear signal at the exact time I press buttons on my remote.
However, when I run
arecord -d 10 /tmp/test.wav --device hw:0

I get
audio open error: Device or resource busy

This leads me to wonder if hw:0 is simply the wrong device for some reason. What does arecord use by default? Or is there something else I can check here?

You know, it's weird... I don't experience tearing but something fucking random... occasionally, about 3-4x a day, one of the backround windows (be in terminal, music app, browser window etc) would just start randomly flickering like mad. Going to try to switch from Arch to Gentoo soon, I'm also probably going to try btrfs. Can I have /boot on btrfs? I was planning on having only two partitions, a btrfs at /boot and a swap, and then installing grub to the mbr. It looks like the gentoo installation guide wants me to have a separate boot partition, but I've never needed one on arch. (and if I do make one, it seems like ext2,3, or 4 is a much better choice than btrfs)

Exactly what the fuck is vim, and what is vim NOT.

Why does

As in, sort -n got fucked the fuck up by my document because it contained an enormous amount of non alpha numerical characters, which made it place 10 after 1, where as vims sort did it fine with no retarded sed or awk instructions to get it moving.

So again, what exactly is vim? Because nano cant do this, and its obviously not calling unix sort if its giving different results.

>>59475576
I don't hate it. I've only had slackware's scripts and openrc to compare it to. As software it's not horrible- openrc is probably slightly technically superior (it has other large flaws, but is definitely preferable) but I don't care about that part. What bothers me is its continued approach of absorbing other system components, and its backing by red hat. First pam and login, then networking- what next? Poettering himself has said it's no longer, or was never meant to be purely an init system. Not to mention gnome and all the programs that unnecessarily depend on it. It breaks the suckless UNIX philosophy, which I don't care about that much but can appreciate.

First of all, you don't even know what that buzzphrase means.
Secondly, it doesn't according to the very vague definitions of it. Also, even if it did, other software does it too and you don't complain about it. Other software is also "backed by" Red Hat. The kernel you use for example.

Kill yourself you retarded hypocrite.

One question though: I have two monitors and when I press alt+tab in the "activities" mode I can only select the applications from the main screen. How can I select the rest?
>>
>>59475734
Sure, try it in a VM first.
>>
>>59475734
I would not recommend using a VM at all actually. Just pay close attention when doing ANYTHING related to partitioning. The install is not that hard, unless you have poorly supported hardware (especially wireless). A VM will make it a lot easier than it will actually be, because stuff like internet will just work. Anyway, if you have basic knowlege of how partitions work, you can easily install arch by just pasting commands from the wiki.
>>
>>59476061
Partitioning is definitely the most challenging part of the install, at least it is if you have existing partitions you want to keep. The rest is like 10-15 lines you can copy almost exactly from the wiki.

So /fglt/ a few months back the only thing keeping me on Windows was gaming and now that I've done away with my desktop and purchased an ultra-book for my degree that concern is out of the way. After the car crash that W10 was for me I've gone ahead and pinched a lubuntu iso and we're underway.

Now my issue is that I need to work with VB.net/Java/C++ and I have very little experience with IDE's on any *nix system. I know IntelliJ has Ryder and IDEA for VB/Java and I'd shit a brick if there wasn't something for C++ but does anyone have any direct experience with a setup similar to this?

I assume people will say Emacs/Vim but I'm genuinely not sure if I could be fucked with that learning curve on top of freshening up on *nix, that being said it's a skill for life that I intend to get around to as soon as I can justify the time.

Any other general advice is appreciated.

Yeah, go with IntelliJ for Java development. For C/C++ I sometimes use CLion (not the best and forces you to use cmake for your project) or just vim.
I haven't done any C/C++ work professionally so I'm not as experienced with good IDE's for them.

using emacs and vim for large, complex programs in 2017 is a meme. maybe emacs slightly less so, but writing 500+ line programs in either of them is a massive waste of time. No. Your laptop has an integrated graphics chip in the CPU which is much weaker than your other card. Does it hurt being this dumb? Because it should.

Kubuntu is not a different distro, it's just fucking Ubuntu with a metapackage called "kubuntu-desktop" installed. (http://packages.ubuntu.com/yakkety/kubuntu-desktop)
if you want to try it out, just install the metapackage using 'tasksel' from a terminal (as root of course).

I prefer using wine-git and compile it myself as it has the latest fixes and features.

If you don't want to compile wine yourself but still prefer having the latest version, they supply binary packages of their development versions from their site for many distros.

If you are OK with the latest stable, most distros ship that in their main or backports repo.
