I tried to get to the bottom of locales.

Xfce4-panel refuses to load a language, except when you only set it globally via /etc/locale.conf (on Arch, I don't know where other distributions source it from).

Using per user settings in ~/.config/locale.conf doesn't work. I also did some testing to figure out how it gets overwritten and my brain is mumbled now, because it seems to be an Arch specific thing and almost a hack.

Fuck this, I'm going back to lxpanel.

Hi, is there any way to downgrade Wincuck 10 to Windows 7 without it messing up the bootloader and cucking me out of Ubuntu?

A messed up bootloader is easily fixed by boot-repair-drive iso (look it up).

You can always reinstall ubuntu and check the "keep the /home partition intact", all your rice will be there.

is the bootloader the only thing that gets messed up when installing windows? in that case i'll try with that boot repair drive
>>
>>59479823
Youre probably fine with just installing 7 on top of 10.

Debian detected 8.1 as vista so that tells you something
>>
>>59479912
7, 8, 8.1 are all "service packs" for vista marketed as a different OS becuse money. driver compatibility proves it, I had no problem installing vista drivers on an older machine on win8.1

Win 10 is a different story.
>>

Just install windows without touching your ubuntu partitions.

After you installed windows:
-download the SuperGrub2 disk .iso
-install EasyBCD
In EasyBCD:
-disable metro boot menu
-set boot menu from skip to count down
-add a new iso entry, point it on the supergrub2 iso
-reboot, start the iso image

The just use supergrub2 to boot up ubuntu, and from within your can reinstall grub and add windows to your boot menu.

Care to share some experiences using anything other than debian?

I went to deb7 after ubuntu had felt too much like a mac. Before that i only had used win ME through win 7. It was a bit of a learning curve but the system seemed to be robust enough to not let me break it.

Then i went back to win 7 and now that i know slightly more, i want to change back to a gnu/linux based os.

I basically just do web browsing, a little scripting and some rtl-sdr

Hi /fglt/,
I don't know if it's the same in vanilla Firefox, but I'm using Firefox Nightly, and there's some little change that's gonna slash me hips:
I use VimFx, so instead of doing Ctrl+F, I simply press the / key to search.
Thing is, when I search for something, I can go to the next/previous occurrence of the matching word with n or N respectively. I used to be able to press n as many times as I wanted to cycle through results, but now, Mozilla has decided to fuck this up by focusing the search bar every time I press n or N, making me have to un-focus by either pressing return or Esc.
Can I do something to stop this?
Why the fuck does Mozilla think its Oak nuggins to do this shit?

Science by definition can't make value judgements. Science is a descriptive methodology and not a prescriptive praxiology. For anything to be prescriptive it must start with implicit or explicit a priori value judgements which are impossible to objectively justify since justification is not an inherent concept in physical reality, but yet again another subjective valuation in itself.

I have ubuntu installed on a 128gb ssd. I want to change the OS but keep the home folder or whatever. It's currently one partition. How do I do this?
I don't want to buy a 64 gb USB stick to middle man the change.
>>
>>59482098
1. download any live distro (simple ubuntu or debian live will do), create a bootable USB with it.
2. boot the live system, then use gparted from it to resize your ubuntu partition
3. create a new partition, move your home there. Optional: clean up your home before (delete browser cache, downloads you don't need etc).

>>

That temperature isn't dangerous, but if you want to you should just be able to turn the fan speeds up. In my experience it's generally (totally depends on the device) under /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon<num>/pwm1. It should be a file containing a number between 0 and 255 which is the fan speed. You can echo a different number into it to change it.

To prevent tearing I just have

Option "TearFree" "on"

in the "Device" section of my xorg.conf file. I don't know if that's an AMD thing or not though, the solution for NVIDIA is probably different.

Never learned anything besides the most basic commands, and the only reason I learned those was because I realised that nano wasn't going to be available to me when I SSHed into certain servers. I've used nano from the start of my unixing. I could take the time to go through vimtutor again though...

Thank you. I saw it posted a few days ago and I thought it would be a nice upload to the board.

How do notification daemons work? I'm asking because I made a notification popup script using lemonbar and I would like to know if it's possible to run this script when programs trigger notify-send notifications.

Jesus christ, could those colours be any more washed out?

They display messages marked as notifications sent via dbus. I don't understand what lemonbar has to do with that. If your script sends messages via dbus (using notify-send for example) it will be shown, regardless of what taskbar you have.
>>
>>59492002
lemonbar is just a window where you can pipe input to, so I scaled lemonbar to the size of a popup window, made it print a given message and made it automatically disappear after 3 seconds.
Now I want to use this script instead of the daemon I'm currently using (notify-osd).
>>
>>59492084
check dbus hooks
>>
>>59492084

That's a really hacky way to do this and you're misappropriating lemonbar. There are plenty of notification daemons which already do what you want.

I have no idea how to get this to work:

What am I meant to do? Paste all those commands into terminal? I am completely new to linux and can't get my head around it.

Is general, non tech support discussion of BSDs allowed here? BSD and GNU/Linux are both open source Unix ripoffs. I feel like it should because bsd isn't popular enough for its own general (and this board has a massive excess of generals). The only alternative is for occasional threads which I don't think is good enough.

Is there a way to make
systemd edit some_service
use sudoedit?

>want to edit a service override conveniently
>have to use sudo
>sudo means vim will use root's config file and not mine

My mind is too stupid to figure out how to solve this (except for manually creating the override directory and file).
>>
>>59492145
I just turned it into a .sh file and ran it in a random directory. No success thus far.
>>
>>59492261

The article is from 2012.
Do you have acpid installed and running? At the end it says

>/etc/init.d/acpid reload

Chances are that won't work, because your distribution uses systemd now to handle services.

What do you want to achieve in the first place? There are perhaps better ways to do it nowadays.
>>
>>59492285
I do have acpid installed. I assume it is running. I have thinkpad t420 with a mini dock series 3. I want it to automatically switch to the external display when I dock it and switch back to the laptop when I undock it. I am currently looking into installing autorandr (https://github.com/wertarbyte/autorandr) but can't figure out how to install it on ubuntu (first day of linux).
>>
>>59492296

>pm-utils
Something is telling me that won't work as well, because chances are you're using the systemd stuff for session handling which includes hibernation, suspend, etc.

Anyway, that's a simple script. You don't have to install it. Download it and run it via your terminal emulator as instructed in the readme.

How come it doesn't do it automatically? I don't know how docks work, but I assume it's no different than when you connect an external monitor. Most environments bring up a display control window when that happens.

Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".
The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.
So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.
So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

I have set XFCE to show the display control window but I would like it to just "swap" to the external monitor and switch off the laptop's display
>>
>>59492368

>figure out how to use xrandr (it's the tool which can change display settings like resolutions and turn them on or off from the command line)
>get a line which turns the laptop's display off and one which turns the screen on
>use udev and its rules to run your script when your dock is connected and disconnected

I think that's the most basic and abstractionless way you can do it. Alternatively keep looking for other people's solutions and the programs they created.
