Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.

I'm sure it depends on quite a few things, not least of which is the sensitivity of your ears. I'm sure you can find a video that purposely captures the sound volume emitted by the card of your choosing.

New and improved build. I ordered the 650w PSU in this build and RMA'd the 520w. I feel more comfortable with the build now. Your thoughts, advice, warnings, critiques on this build, my brothers?

on default settings its actually really quiet, even during load. The problem is that it throttles. So you are leaving roughly 100-200mhz performance on the table.

if you set a more aggressive fan curve, to retain the clocks, it will be cooler, but also noisy.
>>
>>59411837
>The only worthwhile gfx cards are the GTX1050
You can fuck that right off. Only reason they sell is for alienware builds with limited space.
They are profoundly shit. A scam card if anything. I should not be given a 10xx name because of the deception of it.
>>
>>59411932
It supports m.2. Consider it. Even a small one for just the OS, and leave the SSD for game's, and programs.
Considerably faster. But if ya can, just go whopping big storage on M.2 and leave the SSD for later, when you can afford a large on for 'main storage' and HDD's for backups.
But all in all fine.

Spent way too much on the case. Power supply is overkill. RGB RAM is a meme. It all works, but there is a lot of wasted money in there.

Does anyone know of a good, aesthetic, half height ITX case? I'm looking to build a new HTPC and don't need the extra space, but would still like to be able to use an add-on card if I decide I need one for whatever reason.

I thought Black Friday was mostly a meme in Canada. I really should have grabbed one. Still waiting on R5 though.

I thought that too, initially. I bought my CPU, mobo and RAM in October and had I waited for Black Friday I could have saved a good fifty bucks (although I would have paid more for the RAM, I bought that a week before prices got ridiculous). But retailers are starting to make more of an effort with their Black Friday shit because they lose business by people buying from the US.

Hey fellas, I built a machine with your help a couple of months ago, I just recently got a much higher paying job so am most likely going to upgrade my machine, but may wait until the 20xx/Vega cards come out before I do so. My question for now is, what monitors do you guys recommend? Pic related monitor I got secondhand and it has a few scratches in it, I'm probably looking for 1440p 60fps screens, probably 27 inches if possible as that's what I've gotten used to. I'll probably just get two. do you guys have any recommendations?
Pic related, my current rig. The G1 has done very well so far, for a 1060 card.

surely they can keep a cpu cooler while doing less noise than my old single fan Evo 212 that's a pain in my ass every time I want to remove dust

>>
>>59414027
Might be acceptable, but you are definitely going to notice how much faster the ssd is and then be kicking yourself when you can hardly put anything on it.

Personally I regret even my 500gig ssd, picking up a 1tb m.2 on Monday.. But if you're pressed for cash 120gig will do the job.
>>
>>59414042
what do you put on there that is more than 500gb?

as a heavy user I can't imagine having more than 500gb as games and os right now
>>

Dell 27
Yes buy Ryzen 1700x
>>
>>59414079
about 400gig of work on that ssd, plus OS and everyday programs, then 2 256gig ssds full of games, a 128gig with my linux install that I swap out when I need it.

It's not that expensive to get higher capacity stuff now, basically I bought the SSDs in increasing capacity as price dropped, after I get the 1tb m.2 ill replace the 128gig with a 1tb normal ssd then replace the others.
Atm the plan is
>m.2
>1080ti
>3x 1tb ssd
>get a gf

I think they're the best in price bracket. I've got one myself cooling a FX8350.
My only issue is that the pump can be considered noisy. But useing a pair of headphone as speakers is louder.
I think it's quieter on less power hungry chips, as the software with it has scaling going on. Note* you can only set fan curve to preven dumfucks
For the price I can't fault it other than the mounting. I suggest getting around 12-16 spare washers as it seems to expect thicker mounting material.
Ask in /guts/. They've been through all the AIO's.

>>
>>59413992
There are only 2 features of a cpu cooler.
>feature one
keep it under overheating temperature ANYTHING LOWER IS A WASTE
>feature two
do it quietly.

So, the best course of action is buy a tower air cooler with quiet fans that don't spin until the cpu reaches between 40-60degrees celcius, and even then hardly ramp up past 20% so they remain basically inaudible.
You gain NOTHING by cooling a further 5-10 degrees with a water cooler, you would have to be lucky to have a chip that is thermally throttled when overclocking, they will become unstable well before overheating, generally.

water cooling is a complete waste of time for everyone involved, other than aethetics.. I guess, sometimes it looks nice.
>>
>>59414438
Depends if you want to play on 60fps or 144fps. Personally I would change the cpu to a 7600 and use the savings from that plus a bit more to change your 480 to a 1070 so that you'll have to upgrade it in 12 months instead of 6.
>>
>>59414438
not probably fine, 100% totally not-cpu bottlenecked, you don't need an i7, you will not notice it in games, you will not notice it in general PC use, you will only notice it in high end professional usecases that properly optimize multi-core and hyperthreading to that extreme.

if you are gaming and you buy an i7 you are an idiot.
>>
>>59414439

>>
>>59414457
>>59414460
K then, I just figured the i7 would last me longer w/o having to upgrade. Pay now than later I guess..
I'll switch to the i5 & 1070. A-OK now?
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Q6zFqk
>>
>>59414550
thats good, you can probably go down from 650 watt psu to 500watt or 550 but the savings are probably marginal and can't be placed elsewhere.

the general rule for gaming is your gpu is basically all that matters as long as your cpu isnt more than 5 years old. the exception obviously being when we jumped from single to multicore.
>>
>>59414519
that won't be your problem.
If the game you're playing is old, and the version of windows you have is new, try running the game in compatability mode.
>>59414550
Your GPU would bottleneck far sooner than your cpu would for playing games, you will probably not have to worry about your cpu until you need to buy a new motherboard. That build is solid, and will run modern AAA games at ~100fps. You could save money with your psu though and use that money to get a 2tb drive instead of a 1tb one.
>>
>>59414550
o yea also that case is ugly as hell, get a Phanteks P400S with a window.
>>
Need some help with a cooling theory. I have an older gaming laptop and I'm in the process of replacing thermal paste/pads today.

There are 2 sets of heat sink fins going to a single fan. One in front of the intake and one in front of the exhaust so its cooling as it draws air in and out.

The fan itself is opened up on the top and bottom which to me seems like that was take air away from drawing through the intake. Should I use something to cover the top and bottom of the fan off so it only draws/exhausts through the proper ventilation openings?

Mind you people can say this is "how companies designed their cooling to be" but this is an older MSI laptop with a generic ass laptop shell that other laptop companies used.

Should I change anything? I'd love to add a bigger SSD, but my budget won't allow it.

7100T as opposed to a G4560 is due to better power efficiency, as is the GPU (best performance per watt on the market for both CPU and GPU, as far as I know).

I really like the features of this mobo, lots of USB ports and an m2 slot, but I'm willing to downgrade if there's a cheaper option also with an m2 slot. I found some a little cheaper (around 100€) but the price difference wasn't good enough for me to downgrade.

Any tips?

planned upgrades:

what it's for:
mostly emulation up to and including WiiU, streaming gameplay via Steam Link to TV, some OW/CSGO and the occasional new game at 1920x1080.

makes sense?

This is what I got right now, with the exception of the graphic card (recently bought to replace a defunct r9 280x) and the monitor (recently swapped out my 10 years old 16:10 monitor for it)
Should I look forward to upgrading (I don't see many reasons to right now) or just to replace my CPU when the troubles come up? What's a good range of CPU to look up for? are AIO solutions better in dusty environments or should I just double down on weekly maintenance?

Does the GTX1080 play ball with freesync monitors? As in, will adaptive sync function?

I need to buy a new monitor, and gsync monitors are all $100-200 more than their freesync equivalents.

Additionally, is going from a pixel density of 102 to 109 doing to be noticeable at all? I'm going from a 21.5" 1920x1080 to a 27" 2560x1440.

Pic related, one of the monitors I was looking at.
>>
>>59419243
It won't be that noticeable after some time, It would be way more if you were using both at the same time side by side, I have a 84 and 94 ppi screens, and I can see the difference, even more when i'm moving windows from one to the other
>>

Alright dipshit, if you need it spelled out like a complete retard: NO, the adaptive sync function will not work. The WHOLE FUCKING REASON G-sync monitors are more expensive is because you need them for adaptive sync on Nvidia cards. If you could get adaptive sync with an Nvidia GPU on a Freesync monitor the G-sync monitors would be pointless and could not be competitive at their price point.

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/VM2rxr/gigabyte-ga-b250m-ds3h-micro-atx-lga1151-motherboard-ga-b250m-ds3h

Also I would recommend one stick of 8 GB ram rather than 4x2, and if you keep that mobo instead of switching utilize the full potential grab a stick with a higher speed.

I also hope you have a free 1 TB or 500 GB hdd somewhere because you wont get much out of only 120 GB ssd.

Lastly, your GPU vastly outclasses your CPU, so you might right into a bottleneck scenario where you've just paid extra dosh for a 6 GB that runs like a 4 GB.

I've got two new monitors on the way and I need to figure out a mounting solution.

Monitor 1: 27" 2560x1440
Monitor 2: 25" 2560x1080

I want to mount them as pictured, with the 25" 2560x1080 directly above the 27" 2560x1440 and angled down. The top of the desk is ~3/16" tempered glass, so I can't drill or screw anything into the desk. Clamping options should work fine though. Walls are fair game, though.

Any suggestions?

The MoBo and CPU cooler are overkill, unless you plan on overclocking. Sound cards have been confirmed as snake oil time and time again so you really don't need that. The monitor is nice. If you want an overall snappier experience with your PC, I'd recommend you get and SSD for your OS and main programs, and then throwing all of your other files and games onto a mechanical hard disk. It really does make a world of difference.

If anything just ditch the sound card and put an SSD into your build and drop the mobo down by like 50 bucks and you'll be alright.

Mobo and RAM way too expensive. Get an Asus z270 and Corsair 16GB DDR4 3000 for much less.

You don't need an 850W PSU. Get a lower wattage, Gold-rated PSU.

This may be a question for /sqt/, but it's worth a shot here at any rate.

Accidentally yanked on my headphone cord one too many times. This metal ring, what I assume to be some sort of in-built tension relief, has popped off. How is it meant to go back on?

Will I be able to achieve 1080p 144 Hz in modern games with an 6700k and GTX 1070 ?

And for about how long will I be able to play new games at least at 30FPS and low settings with this setup ?

How much does the CPU even matter in gaming ?

I need to get the 6700k because it has better iommu grouping than the 7700k.

haven't upgraded my pc in years, now it's time.

my cpu and ram are old as hell.

cpu : i5 2500 3.3 ghz (not the K version)
ram : 8 gb of DDR 1066

what would make the biggest improvement?
i guess the cpu.

what cpu would you guys recommend?
i haven't checked them in years, don't know what's good anymore.
i'd stay with i5 because i'm not that rich.

for the ram, would upgrading to 1333 make any difference, or should i just like double my 1066?
my current cpu can't use 1600 it seems.
>>
>>59412268
So you plan on putting the ram all together in quad channel? Isn't that shitty on the z170 chipset and only for x99/servers?
>>
>>59413175
Gonna guess you have a $500 budget or some shit. Instead of doing that to get a pc all at once - save slowly and acquire components. Look for deals on craigslist or whatever other resale forum there is. There are also subreddits for hardware selling. Don't settle for a shitty pentimum rx460 system that can barely push a triple A at 1080p above 40fps.

If you're patient over the next couple months you could have a decent quad core and a better video card like someones old 970/980.
>>
>>59428299

Both cpu and ram could use the upgrade, and while current i5 haven't been rendered useless (yet...), the only expensive ones are prob the k variants if you dont find them on sale. I say go with the 7500 (it's currently on sale by newegg with a promo) or even a 7400, kabylake doesn't have that much improvements over skylake performance wise but the memory compatibility is insane, I've never personally heard of a kabylake chip that couldn't do anything less than 3866 ddr4.

And since ddr4 prices are rising you might as well spend the extra 5 bucks or so to get faster speed ram even if the latency is a little higher.
>>
If I can get 3200mhz RAM for the same price as 3000mhz ones, should I go for the higher mhz?

In all honesty I also have a feeling Coffee Lake will be where it's at and I'm tempted just buying a Pentium for now and upgrading for Coffee at the end of the year. I NEED to upgrade right now because my Athlon X2 is cumbling down and I can't do shit at the moment.

It's not that I do not wish to support AMD, but I have a feeling like we'll have to wait Ryzen 2 to get really something solid, I do not really want to play beta tester as much as I'd like to because I'm poor.

Do we have an idea if Coffee Lake is gonna be compatible on current Z270 boards?

>>59431764
>I'm tempted just buying a Pentium for now and upgrading for Coffee at the end of the year.

There could be a new socket type at that point, rendering your motherboard useless.
>>
>>59431805
Can't overclock the Pentium anyway, right? So if I pick a cheap B250 for it it'll be fine?

I can just give it to my little sister by then and buy new mobo+Coffee at the end of 2017 in that case.

>>59431838
It's just speculation, intel seems to change socket every 2 generations, that doesn't mean they won't stick with a third this time.
You can overclock anything but it's more limited on non-k cpus.

I think this is a part of building a PC so I am going to ask here.

Please help.
