If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I just installed debian stable but its still using the 3.16 kernel. Why?
>>
I want to try and install 2 distros together on one drive.

I have my (generic) partition scheme set up to have 2 root (/) partitions, 1 swap partition, and possibly 1 boot (/boot) partition.

2 questions: Will having only one boot partition hosting boot files from 2 distros be a bad thing, or can I get away with doing that no problem? And second; If I wanted a partition to house files that both OS could see, is it as simple as creating, say, /dev/sdxX, formatting it and dealing with mountpoints later on?
I tried doing that earlier but nothing could write to this partition I made (/datafs). Maybe permission troubles?
>>
>>59408858
i personally did have shared boot and home folders before.
Worked like a charm.
If you use .bashrc aliases read out the hostname first and determine the alias which shoud be used on that distro.

if [ $HOSTNAME = "distro1-pc" ] || [ $HOSTNAME = "distro1-netbook" ]; then
do stuff
elif [ $HOSTNAME = "distro2-pc" ]; then
do other stuff

because that was the basic up-to-date kernel when debian 8 was released two years ago.

actually, debian 9 should be realeased within a month, that will have either the 4.9 or the 4.10 kernel

jesus christ guys, i know that most pepole like to be against the grain.

But linux mint is very very helpful in transtioning new pepole to linux

if y'all are so paranoid about it, just run a damn hash on your iso and be done with it

if not, don't use mint but don't be a douchebag to pepole that do

Sadly it looks like I have to give up on pci-e passthrough. I can't solve this slight stutter and audio issues. I've tried literally everything, ACS both on and off, sound from both GPU and passthrough, MSI interrupts on everything, different CPU configs, different mice, different nvidia cards and I've edited everything I can think of in the qemu and xml configs. It just doesn't want to work, the audio distortion kills any chance of gaming in the VM. Guess I have to go back to dual booting.
>>
>>59410267
Oh well that's fucking retarded. I figured out what was wrong, turns out my optical drive didnt like being passed through. I was able to pass a hard drive as a block device but not my optical drive I guess, it was causing Windows to throw a shitfit for some reason. Maybe a driver issue or something, idk. Only figured it out because I decided to delete everything except the bare essentials it needed to run as a last ditch attempt.

I am looking for a laptop to replace my aging thinkpad x201
I am running gentoo but I was lucky because the setup for the x201 is spoonfed tier.

I want a 12 or 13 inch laptop (or maybe 14 inch if as small as the x1carbon). I was considering the Dell xps13. But the gentoo wiki says that the 2015 model was a pain in the ass and the arch wiki says that both the 2015 and more recent one cannot disable the meme adaptive brightness. Also I read some mention about issues with the networking and sdcard

What would be a comfy modern laptop for running gentoo with ease?

What is it even.
The bare minimum is to make sure browser cannot connect to Tor and plain web simultaneously and have its JS disabled. Disabled fingerprinting is a nice extra.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>59415701

That has nothing to do with terminals. Not even your shell, because you idiots instsall a new shell just to get a new prompt.
Modify your prompt.

A properly made software will accept user configuration files from different locations or at least lets you specify one.

But poorly made ones unfortunately don't.

Depends on if you're a freetard or not. If you don't mind proprietary drivers go nvidia, get a 1050 or 1050Ti. If you want open source go AMD and get a 460 or 470. Open source nvidia is shit, don't bother, while AMD both drivers are about equal.

Opensuse is a very good distro. Zypper is the best rpm based package manager. You get packages quite quickly and it has about as many problems needing manual intervention as arch (occasionally). Yast is a good setup tool but every desktop environment has its own equivalent. Imo the install is too bloated, so arch is better.
Manjaro is hot garbage. Antergos is literally arch with an installer and a different screenfetch logo. Just use arch anywhere installer if you can't follow the arch wiki, don't bother with any arch derivatives.

I got an Asus wifi stick because it said Linux on the box, got home and it would connect but then fail 5 minutes later every time. After doing some googling apparently the rtl8192 drivers in the kernel are shit and I had to download a package from the AUR that also blacklisted the kernel drivers. Why? I don't understand why they're even in the kernel if they don't work, I'm not the only person to have this issue by far. The only wifi adapter I've had just werk is still Panda Wireless, unfortunately I needed wifi ASAP and couldn't wait for shipping.
>>
>>59426199
Don't bother with opensuse or antergos. Antergos is a shittier version of arch and opensuse has slower packages, and much less available software, as well as a much worse package manager than arch. If you're new to Linux, you can still probably install arch. Otherwise just use arch anywhere. I started with it.

You need to create a 1MB partition as "BIOS Boot" at the beginning. When setting up the mountpoints just check it's FAT32 and it should work. Grub doesn't really need the bootable flag as far a I know.

 Post Install

Using the config file

Neofetch will by default create a config file at $HOME/.config/neofetch/config and this file contains all of the script's options/settings. The config file allows you to keep your customizations between script versions and allows you to easily share your customizations with other people.

You can launch the script without a config file by using the flag --config none and you can specify a custom config location using --config path/to/config.

It's easier and better than screenfetch. Also screenfetch is no longer in development

I had 25 on an older quad core Pentium laptop but I still wonder if GNOME is going to be intense on my processor since it has little graphics capability, like Cinnamon or Unity. It's just retaining speed for the basics to load and function without pinning a core in high use just by idling or moving a window or using the selection menu.

They didn't convince me. Especially when they're arguing about hardcoded values.

Truthfully, plex still works if you throw some torrent names at it. Rarbg torrents almost always work, some random ones from TPB with "[TORRG]" or similar at the front of file names messes it up bad. Sometimes it messes up, but you can fix the match in plex too.

You should install Source Mage GNU/Linux.

What's the difference between Ubuntu and say, Linux Mint? Aren't both of the able to run the same programs?
>>
>>59437099
Linux Mint is a showcase distro for Cinnamon. It's literally the same as Ubuntu, but there are only some hobbyists working on it, which lead to security issues and breakage https://lwn.net/Articles/676664/ but it's good enough for dicking around

Both are able to run the same programs (like every other GNU/Linux distro).
>>
>>59437099
all distros can run the same programs since it's the same os
the difference between distros are basically
- the package management
- the philosophy
>>
>>59437099
>Aren't both of the able to run the same programs?
Any linux distribution can run the same programs. Fedora, debian, ubuntu... in the end you'll be able to install and run firefox, skype, steam, vim, gimp or whatever program you want.

The main differences between different distributions are often :
>package manager (apt, dnf, pacman, portage...)
>different repositories
If the distribution share the same package manager you'll have probably different repositories, which means their will be more or less software available. For example Debian will only provide free software by default, while ubuntu got proprietary software on its repositories.
>release model
does it have LTS version or is it rolling release ?
>different DE.
You'll only see unity on ubuntu, mint comes with cinnamon and is the unique distribution where there's not too many bugs with it, fedora comes with gnome by default, etc.

For distributions based on others, they often share the same package manager, but won't have the same repositories, and won't have the same version of software. They'll also have a different DE in general, or have the same but more personalized to be a "work out of the box" distro.

There's a lot of few differences in the way the maintainers see how a linux distribution should maintained (security patches, up to date software, release model, DE...) and for distributions like ubuntu and mint, they look like a lot but a lot of things will be different without the end user noticing

Here's a tip. Look into desktop managers for ease of accessability that you want. I can't state how much I had to scoop over this process. For what type of Linux, I reccomend you browse DistroWatch. If you want, check the ranking. Usually it's in the order of Mint, Ubuntu, and Debian. Just look around and see what looks like something you could use. Just check the distrowatch page first to make sure it's got the features and purpose you want.

Please provide more details. Have you already installed a bootloader and are trying to dual boot a finished arch installation, or are you just trying to boot the live usb?

I installed Gentoo on VirtualBox and have a working command-line operating system, but when I try to emerge anything too "advanced" like a desktop environment, firefox, or, virtualbox-guest-additions I get errors about config files needing updated, use flag requirements not met, compiler errors, or blocking packages.

I beat the installation boss and now I'm on the portage boss.
