If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I am tired of the Arch/Arch-based distro meme. I mean, I love AUR and wiki, but fk me if Arch isn't stupid for those using a low-bandwidth connection. Moving on to Fedora/*ubuntu or will be trying OpenSUSE.

Hi,
I installed Ubuntu on my SSD alongside Windows, and I have another HDD for personal files and stuff which is in NTFS format

Is there a way to automatically mount the HDD when I boot into Ubuntu so that programs like qbittorrent that rely on the files on the HDD don't require me to enter the path to individual files every time I restart/mount the drive anew?

Which distro should I run? I'm on arch right now but I want to switch away for systemd related purposes. I have tried to install void linux in a virtual machine, but it seems to me like this OS isn't really finished yet, I've been getting a lot of crashes and it doesn't have all the packages I want.

I've also been looking at freeBSD, but I'm worried about program support since it is more obscure than Loonix™.

My requirements basically are: firefox, urxvt, LaTeX, vim, and ghc. These are the only programs I use (on a regular basis), but I've found Arch to be nice when I need something more obscure.

What do you people currently run and/or recommend?

I want to play games using wine, what should I install using winetricks?
>>
>>59380826
Depends on the game. Different games have different requirements. Check on winedb for compatibility, there are often also hints about what each game needs.
For a "semi-unviersal" prefix, native Direct3D9 dlls, .Net Framework and a bunch of vcruns rarely hurt in my experience, though, and a ton of games require some of those. Occasionally I needed quartz for video, xinput or dinput.
But remember that sometimes things are actually more buggy when you install a bunch of dll overrides, and sometimes you're really better off just creating a new prefix and dropping only what's needed into it.

Well, fuck.
Spent like a day trying to work around it with trivial registry editing and installing DLLs in different order, and the only thing I got is a slightly different crash window.
Does anybody know if there is something I am missing?

Does Honey Select work on wine?
>>
>>59381077
There isn't one.
I'm honestly just perplexed that, in the end, I was defeated not by Direct3D 11 in Wine being too shit to use, but by the fact the game was 64-bit and required .Net at the same time. This is kinda ridiculous.
I guess not that many games require both of these at the same time.
>>59381126
They barely managed to give enough attention to port it to Windows. Until the patch the game was actually busy waiting for everything.
>>
>>59381133
>[Return] [Catalog] [Top] 45 / 6 / 20 / 1 [Upda
duckduckgo it.
>>
>>59381109
What is the benefit to that? Most games work fine with a "all-purpose" prefix, and when they don't, I make a new one and reinstall there.
Making a new one for every application seems both a waste of space and a waste of typing.
>>
>>59381126
playonlinux is just a wine frontend/prefix manager
it has absolutely no compatibility difference from using wine directly

the proprietary codeweavers software on the other hand, it's different, but i don't know too much about it
>>
>>59381148
.net is often only used for launchers, not the game itself
bet they slapped together a configuration thing for the windows release to handle input edits and setting basic things like resolution which the console release didn't need/have, seen it a few times before
>>
>>59381212
They did slap together one, but the thing is, the launcher actually works mostly fine with configuration and everything.
The problems begin either when I start the game from the launcher or when I start the game manually from executable. That is, at the very worst exception isn't happening in the launcher itself. Though maybe they are using .Net to get what you configured in it, or something.
>>
I'm in love with Crux.
>>
>>59381406
I'm happy for you, anon
>>
>>59381170
i like it mostly as it keeps everything clean and avoids conflicts. if you install something that conflicts via winetricks it can be hard to remedy/uninstall, meaning you having to reinstall the whole prefix and applications

from https://wiki.winehq.org/Winetricks#How_to_remove_things_installed_by_Winetricks

Winetricks does not provide a way to uninstall individual apps or DLLs inside a Wine prefix. This is for several reasons, but mainly because the preferred way to uninstall anything in Wine is to simply install into a fresh Wine prefix. (Yes, it would be nice to have uninstallers for everything, but I don't need it myself. Patches welcome.)

I don't know if this should go here or in the stupid question threads.
I'm gonna move out to another city and I won't have internet for a couple of weeks. Up until now my home networking was based on the modem/router my ISP gave me.
I mostly just share files with samba through wifi to to my laptop and phone.
I won't have internet for a couple of weeks, so I'm thinking about buying a router to get my home network up, I don't know much about networking, hence the question, is there anything I should avoid or does every router works fine under Gnu/Linux?

What's a good tool for splitting .flac files of entire albums into separate track .flac files? I do have .cue files too, of course.

Is Flacon my best choice or would you recommend anything else?
>>
>>59383353

I was in the same situation. Couldn't find anything, so I wrote a shitty Bash script with my very limited Bash knowledge.
Basically it can split tracks using shntool and then convert them to mp3. I'd post it, but it's not useful for you because it always converts to mp3.

tl;dr: look into shntool. it's CLI, but figure it out once and then just create a shell function/alias to split everything you download.

Honestly, I don't understand your desire for a GUI if it's just for you. It's way more tedious than navigating to the download and typing one command.

Hi, I'm a complete Linux newfriend. These days I got a nostalgia rush and decided to play a [spoiler]MapleStory[/spoiler] private server. The shit won't fucking run on w10. I've tried every suggestion from the shitdevs, virtual machines won't function correctly for some reason, so I decided I might as well go for it and try it on Linux. Managed to install Linux mint correctly, and it runs oracle VM fine, only now the private server won't run on XP sp3, might have to try w7. But I would much rather run it through wine. I tried to do it with this guide: https://mapleroyals.com/forum/threads/how-to-play-mapleroyals-in-linux-using-wine.22254/

Even though it's for a different private server. But it didn't even execute. The one I'm trying to run is playrien.com
I could simply install a w7 partition, but having 2 windows partitions is just silly, and I like >w10

Any help is greatly, greatly appreciated.

Well, it wouldn't hurt if there was a tool which could not just add tags to files (which shntool can) but also rename the files to Song Name.flac using the .cue or the tags.
shntool can't do that.

How can I match some regex even if there is a new line inside it with grep? I’m using POSIX-extended regular expressions (the -E flag), and I want to match, for example this:
# I want this to match everything between < and >:

Another question about extended-regex:
How do I get the shortest possible match?, like here:
# Here, I want to match the string '< 2 >', and not '< 2 > 1 >':
printf '< 2 > 1 >\n' | egrep -E '<.+>'
# matches the whole string ('< 2 > 1 >')

# I found a workaround for this, but is there a better solution than this:
printf '< 2 > 1 >\n' | egrep -E '<[^>]*>'
# matches only '< 2 >'

Question for enthusiasts, would it be possible to use MinGW to build apt-get for Windows, and then use the resulting apt-get to build other GNU packages for Windows on the fly? My ultimate goal is to convert my Windows into a "GNU/NT" system so I can run high performance Windows programs and mediocre performance GNU programs on the same computer without dual booting or using Wine.

Hey /fglt/! I don't have much to add, I just didn't want to start my own thread.

I'm really thankful for GNU/Linux. It's a hobby where I can continuously learn without sinking much money into (only hardware and the occasional book), I don't need to hoard physical items/belongings, and it was the main path to achieving a well paying job for me. It's my hobby and my livelihood.

I have other hobbies, but I wouldn't be able to afford them without GNU/Linux, nor would many of them be as fulfilling. So thanks to everyone out there who participates, both users and developers.

Have an awesome night /g/, I'm off to bed.

I can't be the first to struggle with this. I followed a YouTube gentoo installation guide step-by-step, had this problem. I then followed the handbook step-by-step, same problem.
If anyone here has had this happen before, how did you fix it? or any tips regardless of experience is also appreciated.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Hey guys.
So I'm trying to dual boot Windows 8.1 alongside Mint 18.1
>I have a 500gb SSD which muh games and other 'windows only' programs are on.
I could probably get it working on Linux but it might be a lot of work
>The other one is a generic 1 tb hard drive with basically nothing on it. Maybe 40 gb taken up by something I forget

>The question
I'm currently at the partitioning stage of the installation. My SSD apparently is taken up save for 9 gb that aren't ntfs. I have no idea why.

My Hard drive is apparently all taken up by ntfs but is also free space, I don't know.

I'm basically going to put the / on my ssd, and home, tmp, swap and var on my hdd. I can't create any new tables though because apparently it will overwrite what's already there, meaning my perfectly working Fallout New Vegas will get deleted I guess.

This is a friendly thread but I'll say it for you anyways, I'm a dumbass. please respond

I mean I guess I could just go the whole stretch and get rid of Windows entirely, which I'd love to do. But I need my CD ripping stuff and games.

I've heard WINE is trash but is that just a meme? From the little digging I've done it looks alright. Making the full switch would be nice because Linux does 99% of desktop work that I want.

Depends on what games. Look at the WINE APPDB it's a big database of people's experiences running things in wine.

It's really all over the map, there's no single answer to your question.
There are even some cases of applications actually running faster on linux with wine than they do on native windows, and there's also tons of cases where applications simply don't work at all or work with very poor performance. Sometimes even very old applications are impossible to get working in wine

Linux still isn't ready to be a platform gamers can just blindly move to. If you have gaming needs you should really do some research on how those specific games will run on linux before you make the switch.
and if you're a "gamer" who loves to try out different games all the time (especially if they're modern games) then you'd probably have an unpleasant/frustrating experience switching to Linux as there's going to be something you'll want to play that you simply can't. Or at very poor performance in wine or something.

But you don't have to switch to support Linux anyway. Let developers know you like Linux and want to see them support it more.
>>
>>59394236
Linux is the name of the kernel that Linus Torvalds developed starting in 1991. The operating system in which Linux is used is basically GNU with Linux added. To call the whole system "Linux" is both unfair and confusing. Please call the complete system GNU/Linux, both to give the GNU Project credit and to distinguish the whole system from the kernel alone.

hey i'm new to linux again after a short hiatus (since college, only been employed at Windows companies, first doing helpdesk, systems administration, managed services, and now datacenter presales)

since the vault 7 revelations, i've decided to go back to GNU+Linux on all my personal computers. It was a long Sunday afternoon when I realized the GUI installer would only dump my filesystem into an incrypted LUKS container without seperate partitions for /boot,/var,/home etc. they also just released a new version of their OS (widely reported on), but without a working cli install script.

i ended up creating my own luks container, setting up my LVM inside, creating my boot, var, and home logical volumes, then installing to a random luks container outside the luks lvm, copying everything over, and trial and erroring my grub into working again.

are there any distros which make this process easy? Where the default installer will create an EFI partition for, create a seperate LUKS container + LVM, and let you set up all your LVs how you like? I'm encouraging my coworkers to jump back in and we're going with the philosophy of encrypt everything, but they aren't willing to jump through as many hoops as I am to get this setup.
>>
>>59395936
>Non-separate /boot partition on encrypted systems
While possible, this is extremely annoying to set up and use.
This probably not the sort of feature you want to be easily accessible to non-technical users, as it will only cause massive problems for them when it doesn't work.

OpenSUSE comes with Apparmor by default and their firewall is prettt locked down by default. Although if you want to use Tumbleweed you will have to do Apparmor yourself, or load them from the OpenSUSE preconfigured profiles.

To new and advanced users I recommend Apparmor over SELinux mainly due to ease of use during set up and maintenance. The complexity of SELinux provides no extra security layers over Apparmor.

Been using KDE Neon on new laptop for 2 weeks:
>sudo apt upgrade this morning while @ uni
>Welcome to emergency mode!
It displays a msg about nouveau and unknow chipset, but I don't recall having messed with the GPU drivers, I was not planning to play on it anyway. GPU is 940MX in case it can help.
What should I do?

ALSA or Pulseaudio?
>>
Can someone recommend a cheap wireless n dongle that has kernel support? I have an AC dongle and using it is horrendous, it constantly refuses to work entirely or loses connection and has to be switched between USB ports.
>>

ALSA.
>>
>>59401231
I just use pulse because the entire Linux sound architecture is already so fucked up anyway no matter which you pick.
and you're still going to have ALSA even if you get pulse.

there is no "alsa or pulse", pulse is a frontend extention that fixes lots of alsa's issues and adds features like per-application volume etc
>>
does pulse depend on systemd?
>>
>>59402193
No. I'm using pulse and openRC
>>
>>59402193

Why don't you check the Pulseaudio website, look for the source files and for a file called INSTALL which usually lists the dependencies? Why do you trust random people on here which might deceive you because this is such a hot topic?

It applies to all software. It takes 2 minutes to find it and see what the dependencies are. Lazy people can even check their distribution's package with the package manager (but that might not be 100% conclusive, because they can choose not to compile it with certain features which would warrant dependencies).

Is there a way to tell keepassx to retain the permissions on a database file when I save changes to it, or a way to always force permissions for it? I want my database to be only readable and writable by me (i.e. 600), but when I open it in keepassx and save, the permissions get changed to 664.

That's why I'm asking about it. All I know is what the permissions do (i.e. when can a user edit a file, when can he read it, look inside a directory etc), but I'm not sure why they are reset like that.
>>
>>59400196
Actually I have been meaning to go in and make it smaller. The problem is I can never remember which install I'm in and they all have the same hostname so the distro name helps. I can kill the dumb mu/lambda thing, but everything else I need.

Hello guys
Lets say i want to change OS from Win to some other.

Before logging in you need to boot into i3 instead of whatever DE you were using.

Delete your i3 config under .config/i3/config if you want to start new.

If you read the page you linked, it is using gaps not vanilla i3
>>

If you're expecting it to look like the screenshot on github out of the box it wont. i3 just manages the windows. You need a compositor and other programs to set transparency, the background ect.

so i just installed fresh i3wm and shit aint using my config file, it is just default one.

I'm a little lost here. Was trying to install arch but my processor is 32 bits. What do I do now? Debian?

Minor fuckup:
I have a T420, I installed Xubuntu on it a couple months ago and I've been using i3 for a while. I use redshift because I find it less stressful for my eyes.
Until now I could adjust the screen brightness using the hardware brightness keys (Fn+Home, Fn+End).

I was looking for a way to set the brightness to a certain value on startup and to that end installed xbacklight. From that moment on, the brightness buttons stopped working. In xev, I can see that they are still being recognized:
KeyPress event, serial 32, synthetic NO, window 0xe00001,
root 0xc4, subw 0x0, time 58127705, (-635,530), root:(169,550),
state 0x10, keycode 233 (keysym 0x1008ff02, XF86MonBrightnessUp), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:

XFilterEvent returns: False

RRNotify event, serial 33, synthetic NO, window 0xe00001,
subtype XRROutputPropertyChangeNotifyEvent
output LVDS1, property Backlight, timestamp 58127774, state NewValue

xgamma doesn't do what I want, redshift's brightness setting seems to have no effect, xrandr doesn't affect the actual backlight and xbacklight seems to have no effect at all (aside from breaking my brightness buttons).

So my questions are:
>How do I get my brightness buttons to set backlight brightness again?
>How do I set backlight brightness on startup?
>>
>>59406054
What command are you using for xbacklight?
>>
>>59406117
I tried
xbacklight -set <#>
with <#> being some numbers between 0 and 100. Brightness did not change.
I found out that I could write different values into /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness. I guess I'll have to write a script, unless someone has already made one...?
>>
>>59406184
xbacklight is what I use. There's a couple brightness scripts on github that do what you need though.
>>
I made a new user, like so:
sudo useradd newuser
sudo passwd newuser
sudo usermod -s /bin/bash newuser
sudo usermod -g oldgroup newuser
sudo mkdir /home/newuser && chown newuser:oldgroup /home/newuser

When I tried to play back a video file in mpv logged in as that user, the first frame was shown and then mpv became unresponsive. I eventually killed the X session and logged back in as my old user. Now mpv hangs every time I try to play a video. I can hear the audio but the video doesn't do jack. What's going on?
>>
What terminal is this?
>>
>>59406308
Read my post, xbacklight has no discernible effect on my machine. I'll look around on github.
>>
Update:
I purged mpv and rebuilt it from the latest sources. No change. No matter what video I play, no matter what format, whether it's a local file or youtube link using the youtube-dl hook, the video freezes on the first frame. When I try skipping the audio stops as well. I have to press [q] ^C ^C to exit, and I have to close the terminal I used to start mpv before the playback window will close.

Audio playback via mpd + ncmpcpp works fine; in fact, as far as I can tell, everything but mpv seems to work, yet I am not sure mpv is to blame.

Any ideas?

does it work with ffmpeg?
what happens when you do:
ffplay video.webm
>>
>>59407413
I can convert videos with ffmpeg, they have the same problem as any other video I tried playing with mpv.
ffplay was not found, I'm not sure I have it. I installed ffmpeg from source, I only put the ffmpeg executable in my /usr/local/bin/.
>>
>>59407487
i dont know if ffmpeg is maybe mvp dependence (i think i read something about mpv+ffmpeg), if it is maybe you fucked something while installing it.
try to install ffmpeg like normal person, via terminal.
>>
>>59407714
I did. I checked out the git repo, configured it and compiled it.
Both ffmpeg and mpv worked just as they should until I decided to create another user, started an X session as him and played back a video in mpv. Therefore I doubt that something went wrong during the installation.

There are none, it is simply the best, yet under represented. It is just as bleeding edge as Arch and Sid yet it comes with the OpenSUSE security team (Microfocus/SUSE) and Apparmor/Firewall configured and locked down as the default.
