If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Can someone explain why the kernel refuses to keep the resolution I set for grub?
I'm trying out qemu+kvm, using Arch as both host and guest.
Both are up to date.
Here's the relevant part of my /etc/default/grub on the guest:
...
# Uncomment to use basic console
# GRUB_TERMINAL_INPUT=console

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal
# GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT=console

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600x32

# Uncomment to allow the kernel use the same resolution used by grub
# GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=800x600x32
...

When I use virtio as the gfx option for qemu, the resolution always drops to 640x480 when the kernel is loaded.
When I use std, it always becomes 1024x768.
As you can from my grub file, the resolution should be 800x600 (I've checked vbeinfo and it is listed).

My other server (entirely different VPS provider than this one) has 116.31.116.40 trying to get in while this one has http://116.31.116.21 trying to get in, which seems like it's multiple machine from the same location attempting to get in. Hi, I'm trying to install Chrome on mint 18 with the following script:

echo "deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/chrome.list

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | apt-key add -

apt-get update
apt-get install google-chrome-stable

When I run it, I get the following:
OK

rofi and dmenu just launch commands as if you tab-completed them in a terminal

So what you want is the first thing I mentioned. If you can run the programs with "appname" instead of "./appname" then rofi will find it.

The way it finds programs is by looking in your $PATH variable. You can see what it's set to with
>echo $PATH
Either add your program to one of those directories, or add the directory your program is in to your $PATH variable.

If you can remember back when the kernel 3.16 was shiny new and still used in desktop distros, wasn't there a problem where fans from specifically thinkpads but also other laptops where the fan would not start until reaching around 75°C at which point the fan is useless? For the life of me I can't remember how I solved it.

Anyway, I have a T500 with a ruined lid joint and a missing key that is now sitting closed between a television set and a cardboard box, running rtorrent to download files and sftp to send them to me. It's averaging around 70 something degrees. I'd hate for the box to catch fire and cause my TV to explode, so I'd like to know how to fix that thing. Or would something other than Debian Stable fix my problem?

Also is it my imagination or is the heat bogging down the wireless card and causing it to transfer files very very slowly, or is that just my shitty home network?

So I've been running Mint 17.3 for over a year now, and I just noticed that my Firefox is not updating at all. I didn't reinstall it or anything, but "Firefox --version" lists 43.0. That version is over a year old.

Pic related is from Synaptic when I select properties on the firefox package. Update manager shows I have been installing the Firefox updates.

I tried doing "apt-get upgrade firefox" on a VM before doing it on my system, and it wanted to pull in over 50 packages, giving many config file conflicts I had to merge where it wanted to change my system name strings to Ubuntu from Mint, etc. So it looks like that will get me the slightly different ubuntu version, not sure. Definitely don't want to screw up my system here.

Anyone know how I can fix this? It is pretty disconcerting.

I have two PCs, both run openSUSE. My work laptop is 3 years old, only has an integrated intel GPU but stuff like animations and videos run perfectly fine.
My PC at home has an nvidia gtx 970 (inb4 3.5GB meme) and two screens and it runs like shit. Switching between virtual desktops doesn't give me a smooth animation, it just switches it from one frame to the next frame. Any video with more than 720p in VLC gives me screen tearing and it seems to run at 15 fps or something. It's horrible!
I installed the proprietary nvidia drivers from the opensuse repositories.
Does a friendly GNU anon have any ideas what could be wrong? How can I test if the drivers were installed properly?

Hey, just saw this, thanks.
It looks like firefox-locale-en is the right version, but that seems to be only the langauge pack, very odd:

anon@anon ~ $ dpkg -l | grep firefox
ii firefox 43.0+linuxmint1+rosa amd64 Safe and easy web browser from Mozilla
ii firefox-locale-en 52.0+linuxmint1+rosa amd64 English language pack for Firefox

anon@anon ~ $ which firefox
/usr/bin/firefox
anon@anon ~ $ file /usr/bin/firefox
/usr/bin/firefox: symbolic link to `../lib/firefox/firefox.sh'
anon@anon ~ $ file /usr/lib/firefox/firefox.sh
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox.sh: POSIX shell script, ASCII text executable

Which looks ok. I checked in the .sh for any mention of the version, found none though.

It seems like, for some reason, the core firefox package isn't updating. I wonder if there is a way to force it to, but in the Mint packages rather than the Ubuntu ones? Normally I'd do apt-get upgrade, but after everything that pulled in on the VM I tried, it seems like a bad idea.

No, freetard, you're missing the point. If a company/group what ever you want to call it, goes out of their way to censor or other wise restrict access to ALL software, thats the bigger point. Its basic fanatical censorship. The right is with the USER on THEIR system.Censoring or otherwise hindering the user from using software, is the bigger problem.

But you're a freetard, you wouldnt understand solid and sound reasoning if it goes against "MUH FREEDUMMMMMMMBS MY LORD STALLMAN"

It comes down to what the user wants to install, and if they want to go against the norm and censor them selves and only use """"free"""" software, that is a choice the user makes, not one that is forced upon them by fanatical distro managers

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Google, is in fact, NSA/Google, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Google. Google is not an evil corporation unto itself, but rather another corporate component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA PRISM project, Boundless Informant, and vital Bullrun backdoors comprising a full Ministry of Truth as exposed by Snowden.

Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Google”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA, developed by the NSA Project.

There really is a Google, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Google is the search engine, etc: the web apps in the system that direct the user's attention. The search engine is an essential part of an espionage system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete espionage system. Google is normally used in combination with the NSA espionage system: the whole system is basically NSA with Google added, or NSA/Google. All the so-called “Google” website is really the data collection frontend of NSA/Google.

>>
>>59372942
Without being a l33t hacker?
Your best bet is to just use thunar itself to find your files and then just drag and drop into the 4chan file upload.

Apparently in GTK every form of bloat under the sun is considered A-OK except for increasing thumbnail size.
Not "adding thumbnails" mind you, because we already get like 12x12 size thumbnails so all the code necessary to display them is already in. But just bumping up the size is too bloated for them I guess.

Who are we to question the GTK gods?

There have been many criticisms for Arch Linux for not using the GNU coreutils and instead using busybox for its userland. Can anybody explain what's going on here?

As you can see, the internet sees my public IP as 8*.11*.18.3*, although my router says it should be 1*0.6*.1*6.8* (if I'm understanding it correctly).

I've forwarded port 22 from 192.168.0.10.

When I try to ssh over the internet, I can't connect no matter which IP I use.
(I'm connecting from my other laptop via phone wifi hotspot)

When I try to connect from the local network, using 8*.11*.18.3* doesn't work, but 1*0.6*.1*6.8* does.
(using 192.168.0.10 obviously works too)
>>

>>

I installed Manjaro Xfce, and I've gotta say I really like it, but be ware. pamac is broken in the current 'stable' release. Octopi and pacman still work though. you can about it in Manjaro bug track page. I believe it's bug #167. the buyback page also incorrectly stated that it's 'unconfirmed'. search for the error using the botnet, and you'll find a page starting it was fixed 'upstream' and that we need to wait for the next update. those fuckers.
>>
>>59374088
Also, when I disable port forwarding, I cannot use 1*0.6*.1*6.8* to connect from the local network.
So port forwarding obviously works.

Open source follows the following key philosophies:

The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.

The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.

The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others.

The above are crucial to understanding the community that comes together to create the Linux platform. It is, without a doubt, an operating system that is “by the people, for the people”. These philosophies are also one of the main reasons a large percentage of people use Linux. It’s about freedom and freedom of choice.

We don't describe free software as an "alternative" to proprietary, because that word presumes all the "alternatives" are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom. We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use. The other methods, nonfree software and Service as a Software Substitute subjugate their users. We do not think it is good to offer users those "alternatives" to free software.

dumb question but why does it seem that only rufus works for making bootable iso usbs?

I have done dd command and that doesn't work, unetbootin may have worked but it didn't auto boot up like rufus does.
>>
>>59377821
Which operating system?
Trying to write a Windows ISO to a drive requires all sorts of extra shit that dd can't do.

writing only linux iso. Rufus always seems to work but I no longer have any windows machines.
>>
>>59377953
I mean which operating system is on the ISO you're trying to write to the flash drive.
>>
>>59377988
GNU/Linux*
>>
>>59377993
Yes, I am trying to burn a Linux (GNU/Linux) iso - for example manjaro. Works great when I am using windows to burn it. But on mac or linux, not so well.

How are you writing it to the drive?
If you're doing
dd if=whatever.iso of=/dev/sdb1
instead of
dd if=whatever.iso of=/dev/sdb
(assuming sdb is the flash drive), you're doing it wrong.

if a kali user and a blackarch user would hack each others, who would win?
>>
>>59378099
Yeah, I did the second one without the number. Not an issue for me now but If I ever change distro, I don't want to need to use Windows.

You mean they're enjoying playful cleverness - not necessarily with computers?

Is there a way to make an alias of sorts so that when I type in for example
rm -r /some/path
that it instead uses
rm -rI /some/path
(that I after the r is a capital i)? Essentially Im trying to make an alias "name" be a command with an argument
>>
>>59378342
Nice, an easy one.
alias rm='rm -I'

Just installed GalliumOS on my Chromebook, sound bug is patched, feelsgoodman
>>
>>59378418
Not him but how would I go if I want to implement some security checks, like when the argument is /* or a directory I want to protect?
>>
>>59378342
Autistic way:
rm() {
if echo -n "$1" | grep '^-.*' >/dev/null 2>&1; then
rm "$1I" "$2"
else
rm "$1"
fi
}

Booted up my laptop today and ran into this
Really not sure what to do, I tried poking around but couldn't fix it myself

Slackware.
>>
>>59378357
sorry but that's not what I'm looking for. The alias "name" has a space. like in the example I gave, if I type in "rm -r" I want it to instead use "rm -rI"

I've determined the disk it's trying to mount is the luks partition
How do I fix it? I've got a ubuntu livecd running with everything mounted
It uses arch linux with grub

so a few years back I had a graphics tablet and did drawings, thinking of doing it again
question 1) do graphics tablets work out of the box on linux (fedora)
question 2) I had a piece of drawing software that made lines neater, curves smother etc, doe anything do that on linux, fedora?
