IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hey i am loving everything about my new t420 except the screen. And I'm in the mood to tinker. Is this available anywhere?

>>
>>59379083
What's your current screen?
>>
>>59379221
It is the 1366x768 TN panel. Pretty shit, worse than my 2009 era Macbook pro. I have money so that is not a problem. Maybe I should have just got a t470 but I'm enjoying this computer a lot.
>>
>>59379243
Well here's all you need to know.
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/T420_and_T430_HD%2B_Screen_Upgrade

The original 900p screen won't ever compare to your old macbook screen, so it might be worth looking at getting the alienware IPS one that's compatible.
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=122381

There are other options for even better screens like the 51nb mod, but they're complicated and good luck getting parts for it.
>>
What's the average temperature for an X220 under full load?

I get 75C, that correct? I reapplied thermal paste.
>>
>>59379290
Looks like the alienware screen is the option. That is not an easy modification though. Scared of the extended cable fucking up desu.
>>
>>59379206
what model? My X230 does 50C in Vivaldi and Firefox.
>>
>>59379316
Pretty low temp. Fan must be spinning like hell. With heavy load mine went up to 90C. Consider yourself lucky.
>>
>>59379424
Nevermind I dont need to extend the cable for the alienware screen...
>>
>>59379549
Did you try changing the thermal paste?
>>
>>59379577
Yep. Paste was new, cooler clean, fat at max RPM. I considered it normal though. Never had any problems with it and my desktop PC also went to 90C from time to time
>>
>having to replace thermal paste in a laptop
shit build quality desu... heatsinks should just be soldered on
>>
>>59379608
Thinkpads can resist some water, are durable, cheap, have a lot of unique shit

But my friend, if you want good design or build quality, look elsewhere. xx20 thinkpads are made of cheap, flimsy plastic. If you take the keyboard bezel, that bends so much that you could probably wrap it around your arm.

I am thinking of getting a (most likely stolen) T460 for 450 euros, that seems to be working fine, anything I should consider before going for it?
>>
>>59379717
Can't really compare the two but it's kinda weird that Chrome produces high temps while Vivaldi doesn't.

>>59379729
If it's stolen you could end up in Jail.
>>
>>59379069

>>
Why do people reapply thermal paste? Is it only needed for select models, or for every older model?
>>
>>59379069

I have a budget of 600 bucks. Is the T530 worth it? I can obtain one for 480 and an original new battery for another 70.

My requirements are:

- high resolution
- should be able to run GNU / Linux (Fedora)
- long battery life

Also, I have 8GB DDR3 RAM at home which I could maybe put in and a 780 GB SATA SSD 2.5"

this is what I would like to buy:

https://www.ricardo.ch/kaufen/computer-und-netzwerk/notebooks-und-zubehoer/intel/core/core-i7/lenovo-t530-i7-3-30ghza-8gb-nvidia-neu/v/an893079784/

Prices are in CHF; 1 CHF is worth 0,993 $, so just assume 1 CHF = 1 USD
>>
>>59379884
It's recommended if that thing hasn't been opened in decades.

I got a refurbished one and I opened it yesterday. It reached 90C under full load, and as I described here >>59379316 after reapplying it I got 75C at worst, but still had to ask to be sure. That thermal paste was dripping mad.

>>59379789
Older models: Cheap, more powerful than some laptops today at a similar price, pretty easy to service and disassemble, pretty easy to find parts for em, upgrades, funny shit like the thinklight and fingerprint reader, the trackpoint.

Newer models: A mix, I don't have any idea but it seems that sometimes Lenovo tries really hard to become Apple.
>>
>>59379932
>Lenovo tries really hard to become Apple.
yes I wanted to get the new T460S and the RAM is onboard...
>>
>>59379949
All I'm saying is, they have all these different series of laptops. They should leave the thinkpad line for thinkpad people and then make some macbook clone on the side.

Hell if you're competing against the macbook by trying to become that way you better make a high quality trackpad.
>>
>>59379949
>want the model that's slim because of compromises like soldered RAM
>complain that the RAM is soldered
What you want is the T460.
>>
>>59379982
The T460 non-S is not available with the higher resolution than Full HD, this is why I want the T460S
>>
>>59379931
way too much for a T530
>>
>get really cheap x301
>check bios before doing anything else, toggle the settings to how I want them
>keyboard beep is on
>turn it off
>keep getting annoying beeps whenever I press some key combinations in linux
>turn keboard beep back on
>it stops making the beeps
>>
How do I tighten the hinges on my T420?
>>
>>59380000
Could you tell me what the acceptable price for a T530 with Full-HD is?
>>
>>59380040
I've heard jamming a wire in the gap that forms over time helps. The main other long-term solution is just to replace them.
>>
>>59380041

$450
>>
>>59380065
What gap? So there's no way to just tighten a screw?
>>
>>59379932
>It's recommended if that thing hasn't been opened in decades.
But your X220 hasn't exactly existed for decades..?
>>
>>59379961
>Hell if you're competing against the macbook by trying to become that way you better make a high quality trackpad.
This, its not like Macbooks are even bad. In fact, they're good in what they do. So good that clones tend to automatically be worse in one way or another, the trackpad being one of the common ways.
>>
>>59380105
As I understand it, it was never opened. I'm not sure when it was produced but that seems like a while ago.
>>
>>59380105
>But your X220 hasn't exactly existed for decades

you dense nigger, opened in decades as in never opened since it came out of the gookpad sweatshop
>>
>>59380103
This is the fix I was talking about
https://ventilatorxor.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/fixing-loose-thinkpad-screen-lid-hinge/
Looseness is caused by loss of friction in the hinge - I was thinking along the lines that it might get worn away over time, but according to guide it's usually a case of the fluids they put it in dissipating.

Well, you could always try tightening the screws first to be sure, but if they were coming loose you'd probably be noticing the palm rest getting pushed up.
>>
Is it worth paying 80€ for an IPS screen for the X220?

I'm really, really considering it.
>>
>>59380597
yes it's worth it
>>
>>59379083
Aside from the alienware screen, no.

I still have $300 I saved like a year ago thinking that maybe a fhd mod for the T420 that works would appear in the future but hasn't yet and yes I'm willing to pay that for the mod alone even without the screen.

Got my elitebook 2170p, extremely comfy so far.

Great keyboard, good touchpad, if a bit small vertically. Honestly wish they'd done like the t230 and replaced the bottom buttons with extra touchpad space.

Screen has mediocre viewing angles, just like I wanted.

It's not too bulky, easy to hold with one hand since the battery extends out the back and can serve as a grip to hold it with.

Temps are pretty good, as you'd expect from a HP laptop with a u series processor.

only 2 usb 3.0 ports, just barely enough, but should be manageable.

Installed Solus and so far everything works great.

really loving this laptop, would buy again if given the choice, no buyers remorse.
>>
>>59381838
>Honestly wish they'd done like the t230 and replaced the bottom buttons with extra touchpad space.
The models with touchpads where the touchpad itself depresses to click still has a similarly sized deadzone at the bottom, at least with the ones I've used.

>Screen has mediocre viewing angles, just like I wanted.
You don't need to endure shit screens to get this, you can get screen covers for it. Just a random example off of ebay:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1Privacy-Screen-Protector/201610175814
>>
>>59382083
the screen really isn't as shity as I expected when looking at it from normal viewpoints, and the elitebook has 4 touchpad buttons, while it only really needs 2 which is what I meant.

Overall though it's a really nice laptop. I really like the keyboard, it's great.

Ya, that's me.

Upgraded the 320GB hard drive to an old 500GB one I had laying around.

the keyboard is probably one of the easiest laptop keyboards I've used so far, with such a small size.

With 4 tabs and a youtube video running in the background, CPU is 48 degrees celcius. Not the best result, but I'm sure it'll improve once I change the thermal paste. The laptop itself doesn't feel hot and the exhause fan isn't audibly loud.

It was priced low due to multiple reasons:
>Had no HDD, salvaged from a old laptop
>had only 2 gb ram, salvaged again
>arrow key got stuck when pressing, cut the edge off with a knife, now works perfectly
Main reason is because there are some weird stains in the display, it seems like someone pressed against it too hard
Its not really annoying, but noticeable on white background

Does that not bypass half the point of getting a thinkpad?

I don't know if I should get a t420 or t430
What are the differences between the two? Right now the main differences for me are:
-t430 has better Nvidia GPU as well as integrated GPU. (Some people here say not to bother with dgpu on Linux, but I want to occasionally play CSGO. What fps can I get on the integrated GPUs on CSGO?)
-t430 has slightly better CPU. T420 is more than good enough for me.
-t420 has much better keyboard, in terms of aesthetics and layout.
I don't care about price, I was considering just kb modding a t430. Is there a difference in screen quality, if both are 900p, and battery life? Does one have higher build quality casing?

>>
>>59394053

>>
>>59394042
>X62
I realize you made a typo and meant X61, but you should look into that. I know a guy who got one and he's really happy with it.
>>
>>59393881
I'm not sure what position the dock connector on the T420 is in, but I know on the T420s it slots into the mini docks so it's further forward and thus the vent isn't obstructed. That said the T410 does have that problem so I have no idea what would apply for the T420.
>>
Has anyone modded an ancient thinkpad to run modern hardware?
>>
>>59394685
Google the x62. I think there are similar mods for the x200/x201.
The x220/x230 have the x320/x330 but that is primarily a display mod.

Just found out about the xx30 wireless card whitelist. Is hard modding still the only option to get rid of it?
>>
>>59394685
There's not too much point, Something like a T430 isn't far behind the latest models in any regard but battery life, and the only other real downside to it would be the screen. The only advantage to modernising anything older is the form factor, and the X62 fits that niche nicely.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be excessively hard to take one of the bulkier old thinkpad and swap in parts, stuff like the keyboard and screen would require either an adapter or changing the chasis to hold a new one though. By the time you do some shitty hack job making it all work, you'd end up with the worst of both worlds - shitter build quality than anything newer with the bulkiness of an old machine. It's a lot of compromise just for a 4:3 screen unless you're capable of work like 51nb does, and even then I'm not certain how durable their products are.
>>
>>59393881
Not really. It looks like it from a distance, but there is a bit of clearance between the laptop and the dock's "wall" for air to escape.

I'm not aware of it being a severe issue. It'll be worth more if you decide you sell it on as well, even if you don't use the dGPU yourself.

Just have a look at prices on eBay, that's a great deal you have there, and they're great computers - the main downside to them is you can't jam them full of batteries but that's pretty minor. Where are you buying it from? If there's deals like that to be had I wouldn't mind looking into it.

People don't even use Windows most of the time on Thinkpads.

Right. My X220's 9 cell battery is fucked.

How do I know not to be ripped off by cheap chink shit replacements? Are there any non OEM replacements that hold a good charge?

I'd like to know this before I resort to buying a Lenovo part.

Also, same question for the LCD. Just today it's started getting weird vertical column distortion when I move the screen or laptop. I suspect it's just a connector issue which I will check when I'm at home. Failing that however, I'll be after a new IPS display as well.

I doubt it 'works fine' in every windowed piece of software.

Also this is the point: all operating systems should properly support this feature by now.

'works on my specific distro' is not an argument.

Only way to guarantee it is to buy official from Lenovo, you just have to pay an insane markup.

This is the same issue with power adapters btw, go on ebay and search for "thinkpad 90W power adapter" and you won't find a single one that's legit. Even the ones that look really convincing in the photos are fake.

Anyone know where I can buy legit adapters from for cheap? I need a new 90W one.

>>59402531
I figured as much. Thought there might be a smol chance there was a decent non-OEM part floating about.

I am prepared to get that if there's no other option.

There might well be a decent aftermarket part. But it's hard to guarantee. I'm actually looking for a new x220 battery too, I just haven't wanted to take the risk on a shitty one off amazon or whatever.
>>
>>59402052
Well, no it was not necessary.
But all the other listings were missing hard drives, hdd caddys, and sometimes ram and they wanted 60 to 70 dollars.
I figured that since it had a dock and was pretty much complete that it was a good deal.

Well... It finally happened to my T61, the loud whirring and now...the Black Screen and the beeps... My fan is dusty...

I've been told that this is an extremely easy fix, but I'm pretty afraid to open the laptop for fear I'll mess something up. I'm looking to have someone -- preferably a computer tech of some sort -- disassemble it so I can access, clean, and put the fan back in, this would probably cost lots of money just to have someone help me take it apart.

I've also been told that some people have simply used compressed (canned) air and aimed it at the heat vent (where I assume the fan is) and give it a quick puff of air. Would that help?

I should note that I bought this T61 used a year ago on Craigslist, I have no idea if it's still under warranty or under any type of care plan.

Halp, guize.

1. Buy fan (only if you don't want to shell out gazillion dollaredoos, buy whole heatsink+fan if you have too much money)
2. disassemble (pretty easy)
3. remove heatsink
4. rip off the broken fan from the heatsink
5. attach the new fan to heatsink and fix it with aluminum tape
6. assemble and enjoy

Here's also a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CvX9EVdQck
>>
>>59404674
Yeah, even if I downgraded to 4gb and no new battery, it'd be 249€. Which is better, I guess, but after a quick look around I don't think I could buy 4gbs of RAM and a new battery separately for less than the the 69€ I'd save.

Alright amigos.

So I heard that for the X220, the best OS in terms of battery life was Windows 7 because later versions don't support that battery manager software so well, hackintosh be hackintosh and acts logically under unsupported hardware and loonix apparently can't really get good battery life despite being real fucking good at performance.

How true is this though? Has someone tried to do a test with many of these OSes, running the same tasks and such? I'm just curious about the many people just slapping a linux distro on this thing and then going like "well, I can get the same battery life, but I need to be using i3 and do pretty, pretty light web browsing and have an ultraminimal setup". I don't know how true it holds.

afaik there are better heatsinks for the dGPU version of t430, so if the temps get ridiculous I'll try to find one of those
Anyway, thanks for the (You)s

I think I'll try to find an 3632QM i7 that's clocked 0,2GHz lower than 3630QM but has 35W TDP.
Do you guys know about any differences in t430 mobos between i3, i5 and i7 models? I'm pretty sure that those are identical but I don't want to end up with an unusable $100 chip

My machine got slightly better battery life with gayOS than W7, isn't an x220 though.

I don't have that model but I have a t430 and Linux runs waaay better than win10 or win7.
>>
>>59405717

That's the thing though, I asked and particularly in xx20 models it seems W7 is the best thing. Not that I particularly like the OS myself to be honest.

For reference, just shitposting with safari and 3 tabs opened has dropped 5% of battery in 10 minutes on hackintosh for me.

You'd need to design and build a heatsink capable of handling the 45W of TDP of the 3630QM. The original one is rated for only 35W. As you said, thermal throttling ia the main issue with those CPUs
I wonder if the Chinese have made an aftermarket heatsink to cool quad-cores on a dual-core machine.

Nothing too intensive. I am currently running an AMD R5 on my old laptop to give you an idea of what I'm working with, so something around there or a bit better would be appreciated. I don't know if that's possible with thinkpads though so any advice is appreciated.
>>
>>59407506
*20 laptops have the HD3000 and *30 ones have the HD4000, both are inferior to the R5 according to userbenchmark. The T420 and 430 have a dGPU option which is better than the iGPU though.

Workstation series like W520 or W530 have better GPUs and hardware overall but they're big and bulky.

I have an old netbook that I sometimes use where convenient and it's fine with browsing the web on 1GB of memory - if I recall correctly I've seen it get up to around 700MB max and that's with a dozen tabs in a browser and other shit running the background, you just have to choose a conservative DE/WM and programs.

The biggest problem it has is that the processor is an Atom N270 which struggles on poorly designed """modern""" websites.
