Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My old x301 is just too weak, in terms of cpu, GPU and ram, but I really love it. I think it's not worth upgrading any more. Price isn't really a problem- I want a laptop with the exact same or very similar keyboard, 900-1080p screen (I prefer ips but don't really care), and a decent gpu (something as good as Intel 520?) So, I've got an x220 tablet that's getting a little too dated and worn for my liking (fairly slow in things like photoshop and things alike), a 1366x768 display is abysmal to use as a drawing tablet, and I'm wanting to replace it with something newer, but still want the pen enabled display, as I love drawing and doing GD on it.
Now, being a college student, I don't have a ton of money, but I can pull a bit over $400 for a device.

>How does /tpg/ feel about the Thinkpad Yoga S1?
On ebay, one with a i5 4300u and 8gb of ram goes for just over $400 and it looks decent for the price, is there anything to look out for?
Known issues, or just bad things about it?
On some review sites, they're really knocking hard for the lack of ports and bad speakers, but if those are the 2 real issues, I don't feel that's enough to warrant a 3.5-5 star device in some reviews.

I remember asking a while ago, and people would only recommend the thinkpad yoga 14 with dedicated graphics and no pen-enabled display for, like, $200 more than what my budget would allow. Dedicated graphics would be nice, but HD 4400 graphics are enough for what I need, and the pen-enabled display is more than worth it for what I'm doing.

That sticky is in need of a serious remake.
The price of a *20 series laptop + a usb3.0 pcmcia adaptator (you really want one) isn't that far from a *30 series.

ThinkPad newfriend here, only used a x300. I want to try a t420 I think. How rare is it to find one with 900p, and the 4200m nvidia GPU? Am i going to have trouble upgrading the ram, SSD or CPU? Is the CPU easy to upgrade/ buy on its own or should I just look for a max spec one?Idgaf about price.

Barely better than the iGPU, consumes extra power and shares the heatsink with the CPU thus increasing heat which is a downside if you plan on upgrading the processor in the future.

It isn't much better than the hd3000 and it causes all kinds of problems if you use linux
>>
>>59359390
Fug. Should I try a 430 with dgpu then? I just want performance similar to a 520m that won't have problems on Linux.
>>
>>59359736
The HD4000 in Ivy Bridge CPUs is a decent bit better than the 4200m as it is, and the fact that it's intel and justwerks on linux is a bonus. If you want higher end graphics performance then a W series or dGPU are your best options, but otherwise a T430 will be very adequate.
>>
>>59359736

Old dgpu are useless, just stick to intel. The ivy bridge gpu is good enough.

thanks for the help guys
the most gpu intensive thing I'd do is occasionally play indie games and half life, good to know I don't need nvidia. I might get a t430 then, but I'm not a fan of chiclet keyboards. Is the t430 chiclet almost as good as t420,or is it macbook tier cancer?
>>
>>59360347
The key layout is the main problem not the chiclet keys, it sucks dicks compared to the t420 and earlier layout.
>>
>>59360347
The only downside is key layout - just rebind some of the harder to reach keys to key combinations or over fn combos you don't use. Hell, it's worth doing on classic keyboards anyway just so you can have it so your hands never need to leave the middle of the keyboard.
>>

>>
>>59360367
>>59360374
yeah I preferred the old layout... Is the kb that hard to replace? I'm not great with computer hardware. i built a pc but am clueless beyond that- will I find replacing it hard/fuck up my laptop if I do try to replace it? Will the final result after the bios reflash have all keys do their marked function?
>>
>>59360469
The replacement is just a case of putting tape over some pins and reflashing, and yeah all but some fairly useless keys end up working. But while you'll certainly have the option of doing the swap, I'd recommend that you just use the chicklet keyboard for a few weeks before you go trying to fuck with it, too many people in this thread just endless bitch about it without ever giving it a go. If anything I find the old keyboard worse since I have to do shit like moving both my arms just to use the media controls - lenovo's changes aren't as unintuitive as they seem at first.

The Gookpad has gone so far in the wrong direction since acquisition. It's not even funny at this point what a piece of shit it has become.

even the ISS dropped the Shitpad

they had a winning formula
all they needed were proper batteries and screens options

yet those gooks had to fuck everything up and now the Thinkpad line is closer to a macbook clone than anything else

The days of swappable batteries, easily accessible components are close to being over with each new generation and really all we're getting is another thin meme shittop made to last only the average period until it gets offleased

It's sad what the brand has become instead. It lost the core of its character and replaced the personality with a macbook wanabe. There are a million different lines now that are practically consumer tier shit with a Thinkpad logo for example. The gooks have no engineering pride. It's in their blood to mindlessly copy the what is perceived superior product. It seems they can not imagine a market where there are two different types of consumers with different needs. This is evidenced in pretty much anything they make.

Is that an X131e or one of the similar models?

I have one and its really fucking good considering they're cheap, at least if you get one with a decent processor and so on (mine has an i3). The trackpoint is very proper, the keyboard is totally usable (I don't think it much worse than the one on the x60 I'm using to type this post). I suppose it isn't as repairable as the old, but it is a cheap laptop. As far as I can tell, it should also be rather durable, it has rubbery padding here and there and the plastic feels solid.

I wish these were cheaper, the only ones around seem to barely be less than an X230 for me. Even the shitty school version with a smaller screen isn't much cheaper since so many of them get trashed by kids. I want one to replace my netbook with one of the very first atoms in it, but it's hard to justify spending too much when I just want it as a minor occasional convenience.

>>59361226
The problem with the Edge models is that they might as well just be desktop replacements - they can flex a lot and start falling apart quickly once you're throwing it in bags and actually carrying it. It's enough to satisfy your typical normie who doesn't expect much more of their laptops obviously nobody here wants to put up with that shit.

But when you're able to put aside the fact they're fragile as shit, they can be nice enough to work on in my experience. The lack of a subframe means all the strength comes from the casing, so even if it flexes when you pick it up, on a table it feels as sturdy as anything else. The keyboard and trackpad are what you'd expect out of a thinkpad, and a lot of other parts are pretty interchangeable - stuff like the screen is just the same offerings you get on on anything else. Maintainance is nice and easy like you'd expect of thinkpads - on my E530 you take 3 screws out to get one panel off, and that gives you access to both mSATA slots, memory, HDD, heatsink assembly and CPU, and the rest comes apart easily enough as well.

The main failing of them is just that they're only good where you might as well use a desktop instead, and the price is a moot point when you can buy old shit so cheap.
>>
>>59361354
>I wish these were cheaper
Yea, I live in an expensive part of Europe so they're sometimes a decent deal since Thinkpads in general aren't that cheap.

Like, it might be between 100-120 euros for an x131e and ~200e for an X200 like it was for me. Decent deal at that point.

You're most likely never gonna get that feel.
X300/1 had the best keyboard on a Lenovo ThinkPad, better than any T60 or T61 w/ alps switches.

You can try with the T430 mod, but it doesn't have that bumpy feel.

So I was looking for a used t450s and a Phone Shop hat one in stock for 700€.
I checked the specs, seemed legit, but it had a supervisor bios passwort. The guy did not seem to know what that was and called their tech guy. He should come in on monday, fix it and then I could get it.

What do you think? Could there be anything else wrong with it? When I check it again on monday and the supervisor password is removed, would it be safe to get?

Got an X220, mainly for hackintoshing purposes.

Cool shit:
-The thinklight
-Powerful enough for that price
-The keyboard is fairly comfortable to use
-The size of the thing, it's just right in my opinion
-How easy to disassemble it is
-Can of course hackintosh it and it works pretty well to be quite honest

Not so cool shit:
-Keyboard flexes, had to fix that a bit
-Internally it does look a bit messy, looks like there's a lot of cheap plastic there
-mSATA speed not that amazing
-Doesn't sit correctly on the mini dock series 3
-The screen is of course, as cheap and poor quality as expected
-The touchpad could be better, I know that the trackpoint is the main thing but sometimes it gets tiring to drag that thing around
>>
>>59363366
**20s do make amazing hackintoshes. I'm switching back to linux though because i use my T420 more as a desktop and the fact that i cant disable the internal screen and run dual external monitors is a real pain.

>-Doesn't sit correctly on the mini dock series 3
Nothing does overly well, those things are just a bit shit.
>-The touchpad could be better, I know that the trackpoint is the main thing but sometimes it gets tiring to drag that thing around
What's wrong with the touchpad? Unless you have problems with where the buttons are physically, you should be able to adjust it to suit your needs for the most part.
>>
>>59363422
Question: do you know if the ultrabase is more stable?

Also the touchpad on Windows didn't work too bad, but somehow it kept missing the edges for me. Also not related to the quality of the X220, hackintosh has terrible, terrible support for the touchpad. I know it's something some dude on the internet tried to make work but it's really so bad I had to change some settings so it's essentially disabled but the trackpoint and trackpoint buttons work fine.

>>59363401
Yep, you have to sacrifice a few things for that hackintoshing. The good thing for me is that I also have it on the desktop and it's pretty much effortless to make both my desktop and X220 work nicely together (don't mean it doesn't work with different OSes but it's way too simple here).
>>
>>59363516
No idea about the ultrabase, never tried one.

>Also the touchpad on Windows didn't work too bad, but somehow it kept missing the edges for me
What do you mean, it wasn't detecting edge scrolling consistently? I remember having similar issues in the past but it seems fine trying it now on some of my thinkpads. No idea if it's a driver thing but I don't really use it myself to have checked. I usually just use two finger scrolling on the pad anyway, it's accurate and gets detected well.

imo one of the best parts of a thinkpad is the keyboard, you can literally navigate any os with your fingers on home row and moving one hand an inch for the mouse.

Linux is literally hotkey peanutbutter to a jelly (media) life thanks to all the configuration possibility in linux so linux and thinkpads go hand in hand.

theres other reasons too of course but the keyboard is pretty primary

Actually manual fan control is way easier than that for gayOS, just edit and remake the dsdt or whatever it's called with the fan levels at the desired temp, it's like 2 lines.

That's how I turned off the fan under 60c for a silent memepad and I didn't like the "press the thinkvantage button to max the fan and enable jet mode" default approach.

The x220/230 have i5 in them and are durable as fuck, be careful that you're searching for the surface pro and not the standard surface, that is ARM.
They can handle psx emulation, I don't think ps2 games will work.
The hd4000 in the x230 will make every new game work fine enough, probably with low settings tho
>>
I saw that louis rossman was able to grab a T520 by the extended battery handle with no trouble.

Would that be safe to do with an extended battery on the X220? I have an original lenovo 6 cell battery on mine and that thing seems slightly loose, it doesn't come out but if you looked at it you would think there's no way that won't just fall off.
>>

>>
>>59364408
I do the same with my T420 regularly, seems like a stupid gimmick at first but it's pretty handy.
>>
>>59363993
Fucking this, compared last day on a job. my x230 was transferring datas from a SD to HDD (with HFS+ drivers) at 50MBs and only cause the HDD was slow, from SD to internal SSD it goes at 95MBs, WHILE receiving a 1080p 422 10bit signal from a blackmagic on the other USB3 port.
Meanwhile an old Toshiba with a pcmcia to usb3 adapter managed to do the exact same thing at less than 30MBs. At that point I could've used a usb2 instead.
>>
>>59364423
I personally use apple services more than microsoft services. It is a well known fact that the best OS to run on a sandy bridge era Thinkpad is Windows 7 for its support, but I just don't want to use Windows 7 on a general basis, not on a hardware support basis.

That it gets better battery life? Sure, it has an application that handles that very well. Supports every single feature the xx20s have to offer? That's what they've intended. I just like using macOS better and have for the last 2 years. I'd rather deal with a few problems for a different system. I haven't run into that many problems to drag me all the way back to use a different operating system.

I tried Windows 7, 8.1 update, Fedora, Xubuntu and Ubuntu on my X220. You could make the case that they -all- have better support, but for me hackintosh hasn't even gotten close to the line of "unstable" enough to stop using it, and I like it better than the other systems.

If you do not want to try hackintosh it's not my business, but all I ask is for some objectivity instead of some "I bet you watch MLP" completely random crap.
>>
>>59364398
The X220 is rugged enough but isn't really representative of classic thinkpad durability. It has a weak point in the left corner over the expresscard slot that makes can make a slight creaky noise, and if you drop it on that corner, fucking forget about it, it'll crack horribly and your expresscard slot will be bent and made unusable. Also, the lid has this retarded tab on it that is wimpy as fuck, and doesn't even need to be dropped for it to start to give. Also the trackpad is the worst I've ever used. Besides that though it has taken 6.5 semesters of college life really nicely.
>>
>>59364476
Those ain't pcmcias though, they are expresscard slots. Not that you're wrong anyways.

I bought the X220 and I'm slightly regretting that, but then again I'm one of those people who don't even transfer files over USB that often-

Legit question:

Why don't you update to Sierra? I never tried El Capitan, but I'm wondering if it's any faster and from what I've seen I don't need Siri or PIP (only thing I think I would miss from Sierra is folders on top and I don't really know if El Capitan has that shortcut for showing and hiding files).

>I personally use macOS because I like it
>all I ask is for some objectivity

>>
>>59364647
Because i dont care about the Sierra exclusive features and El Cap works just fine already. I have its installer downloaded, i just don't see a reason to install it.

>folders on top
Wait. Now i might upgrade.
>>
>>59364599
I took the x230 thinking about the iGPU and usb3 capability and I'm not regretting it at all, the thing is fucking perfect for what I need. Only things I'd change:
The keyboard is great for a laptop but coming from a c2d thinkpad that was absolutely God tier
The screen, not too bad for a TN but I'd really like something on par with old macbooks
The displayport. I'd like an HDMI
The software support. That kind of sucks. Drivers often stop working, you never know if the thing will manage to wake from sleep and in general coming from HPs they just work better in terms of integration with windows.
>>
>>59360624

It's pretty sad, Lenovo turned into a Microsoft cuck sucking buisness. They hate linux. They provide no support for linux on any platform.

HP is an american cie and I think that's why they were chosen for the iss.
>>
>>59364674
Yep, finder now has that option. I guess pretty late, but better late than never.

Also does cmd+shift+period work for showing hidden files there? Just wondering.
>>
>>59364712
Nope.
>>
>>59364689
See, I wanted an HDMI port too instead of DP but in my case it was just because I didn't want to buy an extra DVI cable (I have an HDMI to DVI cable and some DVI splitter, so I basically plug my DVI monitor to my desktop and something else) so it's just a matter of availability for me. Would have saved 5 bucks I guess.

I was thinking of upgrading from X220 to X230, I'm one of the very few people who doesn't just care that much about the keyboard as I'm used to chiclet, problem is that the keyboard this thing has is a piece of shit with a different layout and a broken key retainer, and I'd probably have to replace that shit. In the end I'd be paying 40 bucks so I could sell it for the same price I bought it, and the X230 is still more expensive of course.
>>
>>59364775
Dammit.

Well there you have it. Sierra has those two features. Also now with the new update it's getting night shift mode in case you want that.

After 10 years both hinges on my Thinkpad are broken. I made do with one hinge for awhile but the other one just gave out.

The problem when the hinges go out is the screen can't stay upright without support. That makes the laptop unusable without support.

So I took the plastic casing off my laptop and stripped it down to its metal casing. And I used epoxy and duct tape to get this thing to stand up right. It looks awful with the bare metal, epoxy and duct tape. But it works.

It is almost like it stop being detected as hardware, sometimes it loads, but drops after some time (not a particular signal, but stops detecting any signals whatsoever), sometime it works for a whole day without a problem. Sometimes it is not detected on w7, but after restart it works on xubuntu.

Now I'm lurking on WiFi thethering through USB from my phone. But I suppose that's hardware issue so I'd have to take a look under the the cover.

Anyone encounter something like that?
>>
Is it stable under xubuntu? Linux literally has better hardware support for thinkpads then windows does.

You should check the pins on your WiFi card. I had similar problem with a very worn out X201 and it turned out the there were small holes worn on the WiFi card pins. Reinserting the WiFi card in a way that the pcie slot contacted differently fixed things for short term but I ended up ordering a replacement 633ANHMW Intel 6300AGN for $7.

Hey /tpg/, do you have any ideas as to what could be causing my sound card issues? I've been working at this for a couple of days, pls help.

I've reinstalled the operating system (ubuntu) two or three times, even DBAN-ed the HDD at one point. No matter what, ALSA doesn't recognize the sound card. I tried purging ALSA and Pulseaudio and everything possible.

However, I just noticed that sound doesn't even work if I'm running from a live USB environment. This leads me to think that there's a problem with the BIOS, or perhaps the computer itself. Lenovo Solutions Center isn't available for Linux, so I'm not sure what to do next. Suggestions?

I wouldn't mind too much that the trackpoint buttons aren't clucky, during lectures, I'd often find myself using the tap to click on the touchpad just to be quieter.
>>
>>59370366
Sound worked for the past year or so (since I bought it, factory refurbished). It stopped working just a few days ago.

I'm not rough with it, I'm pretty careful with all of my tech. No, I haven't taken it apart.

A day or two ago, when I was working on it, I would get sound working after changing something (adding "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" to my /etc/default/alsa-base.conf file, for example), but now (since the last reinstall of ubuntu) it seems like no matter what I do, including the things that had fixed it the other day, nothing changes.

I'm considering taking out the CMOS battery and seeing if letting that clear itself might fix it.

Its probably hardware so i would take it apart and see what you see. The most difficult/frusturating part is popping the palmrest, use a plastic card and go slow, its really not hard just read a wiki on how to take it apart and follow by step. Honestly t420 is a great intro to disassembling a laptop

If you take it apart check the speaker wires and where they plug into. Same with headphone

You could also see if headphones work instead of speakers, and make sure auto mute is not on, i
remember some guy had the same problem like a year ago and it was fucking automute.

You could also try windows, see if sound works there. if it doesnt you have a short or broken mobo

I am looking at a t420 on ebay that Is a really good deal for what it is. The seller says it needs a new screen but other than that boots into windows 10. The symptoms are a screen that changes colors (in the picture it has a green tint) flickering horizontal lines. It was dropped at some point pretty hard. The symptoms to me sound like a bad gpu/bad screen connection. The guy accepts returns. Do you think it is the screen or the gpu like I suspect? Should I pick it up still?

A lot of the good reasons not to use Linux are good reasons not to use a thinkpad, so by the time you have a thinkpad there's no real downsides to it. Also you're on /g/ so of course everyone's keen to shill it.

The T420 is arguably better.
The E6420 may have HDMI out, a stronger chassis, a backlit keyboard and arguably better speakers & display.
The T420 has mSATA support, proper cooling, and a thinner/lighter design.

Quite a few non-dGPU i7 machines had overheating issues, because dell used a single heatsink pipe instead of dual. A BIOS upgrade fixed this issue but didn't fix the burned mobos.

I'm still using an X60 and an X131e as my only computers.

The only reason why the X60 couldn't be my only computer is that it doesn't have the C2D, so it is 32 bit - and I need to occasionally boot into a 64 bit OS for certain work, so that can't do it.

I think I can deal with this, considering the X60 is 10 years old by now and it works just fine for me. Maybe I can get an X220 or something in 2020.

In theory it should, you will have to do a clean install on the new SSD, then reinstall your old programs.
It is recommended because if not and you wiosh to clone the original hard drive to the SSD, it will eventually brick if you go that path.

Anywho, most 2.5" SSDs will fit into your machine, both 7mm and 9.5mm ones. mSATA will not work, additionally you can put your old hard drive onto a HDD ultrabay caddy if you never use a CD drive.

It doesn't have to be a Lenovo Replacement part either, it can be any SSD, you just need to format and install an os. I believe the T410 is limted to SATA II, but you can use SATA III, it is compatable.

SSDs like these will work.
128GB used, starting at $34
