Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.

Any recommended M.2 SSDs? Are they worth the slight premium over a normal SATA SSD?

This is my build (added a Crucial M.2 SSD I'm looking at):
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/F348Cy

My board supports M.2 natively. I've never dealt with M.2 drives before, but from my research they're significantly faster than SATA SSDs.

Overclock your RAM, just turn RAM profile to XMP. It may take some more voltage depending on your speed but it's generally pretty easy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Experiments_Lain#Apple_computers
>>
>>59359265

That's not how it works.

The RAM runs at 2133mhz by default. You overclock it to get higher speeds. 3200mhz DDR4 is the exact same as 2133mhz DDR4, except the 3200mhz stuff is binned to be able to overclock to at least 3200mhz.

Get the 6700k and buy whatever RAM you want. Just go into BIOS and enable the XMP profile. It's a preset overclocking profile that will give you the advertised speed on your RAM.

So I'll be trying to buid a quiet computer. So met me confirm my methodology with you guys.
Please give me some tips if I have forgotten anything.

>Choose quiet internal components
Biggest CPU and GPU coolers I can find. Not water cooled to avoid pump noise.
Only SSDs in the computer, HDDs on network storage.
PSUs with a higher 80+ rating produce less heat and will require less cooling. Try to get one that only uses it's fan as needed.

>Use software to controll fans
Off when unnnecesary, spin up as appropriate

>Quiet case
I don't know the criteria very well, so I will probably just get something that is popular. Like a Define R5.

Hello /g/uys. I really dislike alot of you and your close minded shitty advice most of the time but I love the stary eyed kid about to order his first parts list

so uh I wanted to sell my 6600k for a 7700k because I have a specific use case and need the best possible single threaded performance and the 4.7 -> 5.1ghz upgrade would have been worth

but the 6600k is dirt fucking cheap on ebay. you can use z270 boards too so that's cool. good value for a build.

It's world of warcraft. It's beyond frustrating really. The game is very large but it comes down to 4 distinct "modes" in generic terms.
Old open world: Really like the first 3 or 4 expansions, no problem, always a million FPS.
New open world: Graphically very demanding. Dip below 60fps on a 1060 6g @2170/2500mhz Delidded [email protected] and ddr4 3600 c15 with 7/10 settings.
City: The worst. Constantly l;ow and spikey fps never above 80. It's the player density.
Dungeon: No problems, 160ish fps.

I need to do testing. How ram frequency affects fps. Need a ryzen to test thread scaling. GPU to CPU balance etc.

It's the only game I've played in the last 10 years.
>>
>>59362198
>It's the only game I've played in the last 10 years
Jeez dude, I'm not laughing, I'm deeply saddened.
Your gpu is the bottleneck. But is it worth spending whatever it will be in your home country for a 1080 just for WoW?
>>
>>59362219
Yes I need 120fps minimums. The problem is I'm not convinced it actually is the GPU. I feel strongly that if I order a 1080 right now my city FPS wont increase at all. Trivial area fps will go up. It's something with new content/textures that's taxing a certain part of the system and I cannot find what it is. CPU usage 40% across 4 threads, gpu usuage low when fps is low. My ram bandwidth should be good I have a top tier kit but maybe quad channel will help
>>
>>59362245
Your city FPS wont increase no matter what, that's the fault of both the engine and outdated coding practices.

I've checked pretty much all benchmarks and info available for both, but even weeks after I started looking into building myself a new computer I'm still lost on what to finally decide on. Worth saying I have no interest in overclocking and already decided on getting 2400mhz RAM.

>i7-7700 + B250 = 405€~
>i7-7700K + Z270 + Custom Cooler = 510€~

Positive points for going with the 7700 :
>I can save 100€ (more depending on whether I end up buying an expensive cooler or not - above is 30€ cooler).
>It might run cooler and consume less power.

Positive points for going with the 7700K :
>Noticeably more powerful than the 7700 even without OC.
>Less chance of regretting it due to being the best and possibility of overclocking in 4-5 years down the road if needed.

I have a feeling the problem might be psychological, with me wanting the best possible hardware I can get no matter what even if I do not even get the best use out of it. It's true when looking at statistics the 7700K is constantly noticeably ahead but... wouldn't a 7700 work as well for anything I plan on doing in the end? Perhaps the 7700 might serve me very well without any problem whatsoever for the next 4-5 years and going with the K version would be a waste of money. Though so far from what I've seen the 7700 might be as powerful as an i7-4790K which might be laughable since it's 3-4 years old :
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-7700/2384vs3887
but I don't know if that particular link is worth a lot or not.

Please help me decide.
>>
>>59362846
>Worth saying I have no interest in overclocking

Why not? It's easy.
>>
>>59362888
I don't need 5ghz to emulate gamecube games or play pixel games. Hell even games as of now don't need that much ghz.

Are you people just overclocking just to milk yourselves over or what?

>>59362550
>and oc to 5ghz
Why the fuck are you OCing a 7700K that came out two months ago? What for? I'm genuinely curious.
>>
hey /g/ I'm going to upgrade my GPU. I've found a sapphire RX 470 nitro+ 8GB and a sapphire RX 480 nitro 4GB. Both of them cost exactly the same so which one should I get?
>>
>>59362903
>Are you people just overclocking just to milk yourselves over or what?

I overclock because I want to get every ounce of performance I can get out of the hardware I buy. Why would I buy a CPU and not take advantage of its full potential?

Frankly you sound like a bit of a fucking retard.

The 7700k's max turbo speed is 4.5ghz. The 7700's is 4.2ghz. The 7600k's is 4.2ghz as well, while the 7600's is 4.1ghz. Unless you need hyper threading there is no point in buying the locked i7 (or frankly the i7 at all). Clock-for-clock these CPUs are the same, other than the i7's hyper threading, the performance difference between the 7700 and 7600 is 100mhz and the price difference is around $80.

This is why I think you're a retard. You seem incredibly concerned about the 300mhz difference between the 7700 and the 7700k, yet you apparently cannot fathom why someone would overclock their brand new CPU for a performance increase even greater than that.

>>
>>59363237
But from what I've seen, the 470 is really close to the 480 in terms of performance. With a bit of overclocking couldn't the 470 potentially get the same performance as the 480?

Not very. I wanted to spend 300 bong or less on the CPU, so R7 1700 is stretching it. I was originally planning to wait for the R5 1600X and the accompanying mITX board but since it might take a while, I decided to ring up the i5-7600. It looked tempting at 200 bong. That said, the R5 seems like it'll be more suitable for all the odd jobs.

Also, I didn't stay pure for AMD-senpai just to buy Intel in the end (FX-8350 for four years and counting).
>>
>>59363468

Given the relative low cost the remaining ryzen chips are likely to come in at (I would guess the 4c/8t models to be around £150 and the 6 core to be £220ish) it really is worth waiting in my opinion compared to just getting the i5 now.

Overclocking will narrow the gap between the 6600k and 6700k. The primary advantage of the i7 is hyperthreading, which games don't really take advantage of. It's definitely not worth the price premium.

Like that PSU could be half the price and that ram could be half the price (that's just the market though, lately ram prices have skyrocketed)
Trust me, 900p and 30fps? That's nothing for the build you put together
The 60fps is usually the biggest selling point between PC and consoles and it adds a lot of power needed. 30fps is not difficult to achieve at all, that's why consoles are not 60fps 1080p computers capable of matching $500-600 builds
You don't go PC to match consoles for cheaper, you go to PC to beat consoles for the same price

No to be rude and just so things are clear but that doesn't invalidate the fact that 7600 is Kaby Lake so you need a B250, H250(? forgot exact number, doesn't matter since H boards are useless) or Z270.

But anyway it looks like you were just adding to your previous comment; I believe that's a pretty good build for the price. With that said no matter what we say here you need to go ahead and check benchmarks and CPU comparisons out there to form your own opinion so you don't end up regretting it.

In the process of doing cheap upgrades to my old gaming laptop.

MSI GT70 0ND
I7 3610QM
880M

I just got 2 Seagate 500GB Firecuda's for a RAID. Seagate was adamant about them not being good for a raid because it wasn't enterprise version. Is that really something I should care about or no?

Second question is about RAM, I've tried to understand it but I'm not too knowledgeable about that shit. I got x4 sticks for dual channel currently.

4gb 800mhz DDR3-1600 / PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM SO-DIMM

Is that good or should I upgrade to something with higher clock speed? Reason I'm doing these upgrades is because GTAV has random dips despite the cpu and gpu not being maxed out and I feel it was the HDDs/RAM bottlenecking. Fallout4 is another thats entirely unplayable and I know its a ram based game. What would be recommended?
>>

No way to get 2400mhz RAM? They are usually not much more expensive.
Also, are you getting 8GB because the mobo only has 2 slots? If mobo has 4 go 2x 4GB in my opinion.

Toshiba is good, but 2TB are cheaper per TB.

I'm Canadian, need a pc that's 1500 or lower, and will game and possibly video edit (1080p video, would like 1440p or 1080p at 60fps). I live in Toronto (with fucking 13% tax) so I added all taxes for these builds (13% on each website is the Harmonized Sales Tax)

I have an AMD build and a Intel build.
Intel - https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/zHmqQV
AMD - https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Y8gwKZ

pls help thx

I'm not understanding these numbers at all. "max supported memory clock" does this mean if I get 4 sticks of 1600mhz each only 1300mhz will be used essentially 1 stick?

I'm no pro or anything but I just find the FX and that mobo just too limiting, like, you're gonna buy this with possibility of upgrade in the future and it won't even last you long.

If I were you I'd go with something like a B250 as a mobo which can be dirt cheap and with a Pentium G4560 which is also dirt cheap (check the other Pentium G too, but I think that one hold the most value out of them all). Then later on you can upgrade to an i5 or even an i7 7700 if you want on that mobo.

Just my opinion from a fellow /agdg/ faggot.

>>59374717 got the idea.

>with possibility of upgrade
with no* I mean.

Look :
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-G4560-vs-AMD-FX-6300/3892vs1555

And inform yourself on 7th generation Pentium. They are beast, 2 cores hyperthrending (4 threads, virtually 4 cores).

Go B250.
>>
>>59374799
pcpartpicker tells me its good.

feel free to explain why its bad though.
>>
>>59374809
Because H110 would need a BIOS update, they don't handle 7th generation processor aka Kaby Lake unless you update them. Anon doesn't have a Skylake at hand if he's looking to buy a budget build, so he won't be able to update.

Also you fucking put a cooler in his build although the G4560 already comes out with a cooler which is plenty enough. Way to waste 20 bucks for no reason.
>>
>>59374809
>Compatibility Check: See notes below.

>Some Intel H110 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Kaby Lake-S CPUs.
>The Fractal Design Core 1100 MicroATX Mini Tower Case supports video cards up to 350mm long, but video cards over 170mm may block drive bays. Since the MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Video Card is 215mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

Most AAA games released in the past 2 years have a minimum VRAM requirement of 2GB. To meet recommended requirements, most of these games require 4-6GB of RAM.

Just a couple years ago, 4GB sounded like an absurd amount of VRAM, but here we are. Games, especially theatrical AAA titles, utilize a lot of humongous textures, and console-to-PC ports are not very well optimized often times, so games like Batman: Arkham Knight actually need about 4GB to not run like ass. This is because the PS4 and XBone don't have dedicated VRAM, but instead use the 8GB system RAM. Bandwidth speed is slower than on PC, but overall consoles have between 6GB to somewhere less than 8GB of RAM to utilize. Therefore when the games are ported, often times you see huge VRAM usage spikes.

The 6GB 1060 is worth it over the 3GB 1060. 2GB cards are already becoming obsolete, so it wouldn't surprise me if in a couple of years 3GB will be obsolete, especially with 3GB being a non-standard amount of VRAM. For the current generation of consoles, 6GB-8GB of VRAM is ideal.

Seems very similar to my old build, which had a FX-8300 and a r7 360. It handled games alright on medium settings, but the processor was a severe bottleneck in many games. In Overwatch, I would get about 70 fps at 900p on medium to high settings, but during intense team fights, frames would dip down to 30 fps because of the CPU bottleneck.

About one year later, I upgraded to a 6600k and a RX 480 8GB. I slightly regret that build because at the time, about $200 more could have gotten me a lot more.

not bad, but why not consider a 6600k or 7600k with a z170 or z270 mobo for overclocking? You would also need a CPU cooler, which I would recommend the CM 212 or the Cryorig H7

I have the n200 case and imo it's about perfect for a basic mini mATX tower case. It's small enough to be tucked under the corner of my desk neatly, but large enough to not feel cramped when I'm working in it. It gave me more than enough room for a good CPU cooler as well.

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/4XyxFT/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-windforce-oc-video-card-gv-n1070wf2oc-8gd

Windforce is about $10-15 less, and the only other differences that are apparent are the fan sizes, length, and the windforce has about 0.15 less on boost clock.
>>
>>59375557
>but why not consider a 6600k or 7600k with a z170 or z270 mobo for overclocking?

Not him, but between the CPU, the mobo and the cooler there is a significant price gap between an overclocking and non-overclocking system.
>>
>>59375557
I appreciate your feedback, especially for validating my case choice.
However, I didn't want to spend the k premium and I probably wouldn't overclock anyways. I basically want comfortable 1080p gaming for a few years and to not spend a mass of money.
