Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

The 9 cell battery in my t420 doesn't last more than 2-3 hours off the charger at about level 6 brightness browsing the internet, watching YouTube, nothing intensive.

Is this normal? Seems like kinda shitty battery life and I don't want to spend $70+ for stock battery when I paid 200 for the laptop over a year ago. Any alternatives to shelling out manufacturer price or risking getting a less than advertised capacity battery off eBay?

change the cells out to better ones yourself, it's not that hard if you know how to solder.

should be better than new if you use proper cells.

what the shit

not only does he probably not have a spot welder or whatever you call the battery tab solderer, you have to charge the new batterypack to the exact voltage of the one you're replacing, wire it in parallel with the other pack to the board, and only then can you cut the old one out.

T520 can use the same high gamut screen as the W520. It's only inferior that it doesn't have a quadro and 4 ram slots. The parts are also interchangeable between the two. Really the only difference is the motherboard.

>>59336537
Not >>59336128, but let me tell you that following the guide specific for the x220 (the mcdonelltech one) isn't the -only- thing you need to do in order for that to work quite right.

Let me explain:

Once you install them kexts on the pack provided in that website, you'll get 3 behaviors:

1. With touchpad enabled, double clicks.
2. With touchpad disabled through the prtsc key, your keys won't register well as long as you have enough of your palm touching the touchpad at times.
3. With touchpad disabled through hardware, the trackpoint will skip real bad and the middle trackpoint button won't work for scrolling.

So what do you do if you don't want the stupid touchpad which works like ass anyways, but want the trackpoint to be functional and no weird clicking?

You have to open the VoodooPS2Controller.kext on that pack, then find inside the VoodooPS2Trackpad.kext (inside /contents/plugins) and open it up as well.

Find the info.plist, open it up with a text editor or and look for FingerZ entries. Ramp those up to a really high value (over 600 for instance). You'll see some Lenovo entries there, but since I'm a retard I went and changed all FingerZ entries for good measure.

Patch that shit again, you can use the same tool included in that pack, restart and use prtsc, and that shit doesn't ever miss a click, doesn't double click, doesn't skip and doesn't lack middle button scrolling. It werks.

So, I've got an x220 tablet that's getting a little too dated and worn for my liking (fairly slow in things like photoshop and things alike), a 1366x768 display is abysmal to use as a drawing tablet, and I'm wanting to replace it with something newer, but still want the pen enabled display, as I love drawing and doing GD on it.
Now, being a college student, I don't have a ton of money, but I can pull a bit over $400 for a device.

>How does /tpg/ feel about the Thinkpad Yoga S1?
On ebay, one with a i5 4300u and 8gb of ram goes for just over $400 and it looks decent for the price, is there anything to look out for?
Known issues, or just bad things about it?
On some review sites, they're really knocking hard for the lack of ports and bad speakers, but if those are the 2 real issues, I don't feel that's enough to warrant a 3.5-5 star device in some reviews.

I remember asking a while ago, and people would only recommend the thinkpad yoga 14 with dedicated graphics and no pen-enabled display for, like, $200 more than what my budget would allow. Dedicated graphics would be nice, but HD 4400 graphics are enough for what I need, and the pen-enabled display is more than worth it for what I'm doing.

this does work wrt fixing clicks, but jacking up all four FingerZ entries in my info.plist seems to disable the touchpad entirely, prtsc or not. not exactly mourning this loss, but might there be one of the FingerZ entries that could be kept low so the touchpad fill continue to work when enabled?
>>
>>59337994
Indeed. It's not ideal, but to be honest it looks much easier to fix the trackpoint than it is to make the touchpad bearable. This is a specific solution in case you never ever use the touchpad.

I'm going to be honest, I wish the touchpad worked nicely. I don't mind using the trackpoint but I have a magic trackpad and if I could just shrink that shit and fit it inside the X220 I would.

It may not be as good as the older keyboard.

Took three more times to figure out what you meant
>>
Man for the first laptop ever bought for myself (I fixed a few laptops, but always bought desktops) the X220 is doing way more than I expected from it.

Like I wanted to put 2 virtual machines on it and I thought it would crap itself. Nevermind that it's dealing with them just fine and the processor it has doesn't have any fancy virtualization features (2450M).
>>
>>59339189

Now make a video about the battery life and all that good stuff so I have a reason to buy one :^)
>>
>>59339498
I've had the thing for 2 hours

It charged up really fast; advertised charge time is 100% accurate. the precision touchpad is incredible and the trackpoint is as goat as ever

screen is nice, expecting it to be ~90%srgb compared to the yoga which was 80% and my desktop monitor which is 100%

gotta find out if I can put a 42mm SSD in the WWAN slot. It seems to work on other X series and T series thinkpads, but almost never X1s for some fucking reason

I'm going to try fedora to see how wayland is, but I like Ubuntu flavors and Solus as well. Would really like a dedicated drive for distro hopping instead of having to dual boot off of a single drive. Windows hates that shit
>>
>>59339693
With that first-gen i3 sticker and chiclet keyboard, I'm pretty sure you're looking at one of the original Edge series models. I'm no good with sense of scale but I'd bet on it being a 13" or 14".

I wouldn't get it unless it's free or <$50.

Poorfag freedom (or rms worship since he uses an X60):
Any of the X60 series with whatever upgrades and fixes you might want. At least replace or remove the intel wi-fi since it doesn't work without non-free firmware.

X200 w/ BIOS replacement gets a bit expensive unless you want to flash it yourself and already own the necessary hardware for the job. X60 series can be flashed with software on GNU/Linux.

really loving this x230t.
Thought i might not like the keyboard but it's honestly really nice. Much more tactile than i thought. I went from the *20 keyboard to this and there were no hiccups. I really like the black unmarked thinkvantage button. the blue one seemed gimmicky. Also was worried i wouldnt like the minitured palmrest without dedicated buttons but it's way more intuitive than a mac laptop as well.

So far tablet mode works well with windows 10, tomorrow i will be installing linux which will probably be much more involved if i want a complete hybrid tablet system. Sort of concerned if/how i will detect tablet mode but its not essential.

Shoved a old Win10 ssd that was in(and "drivered" for) my t420 into this hoping it would work oob and it did! Took an extra minute to boot detecting the devices and such, very happy with this portability.

I guess the biggest con if i wanted to be a cunt is the low screen res but i bet linux will make this a little better.
>>
>>59344210
Oh i guess the browser back/fwd buttons being replaced is also a con. Used to love being able to hit those with my pinky

Would ya'll suggest a w530 for a cheap workstation laptop? Or has technology gone further so a modern general GPU would outperform a Workstation GPU?

>has technology gone further so a modern general GPU would outperform a Workstation GPU?
Just going off of passmark to compare the P50 offerings, the M1000m is twice as powerful as the K2000m and the M2000m a bit more still. I havent really shopped around for GPU performance much so I don't know what the ideal option for graphics performance is, but using the P50 as a point of reference you might be paying about twice as much for a fair bit over twice the graphics performance. Up to you'll get enough value out of that GPU, but in every other regard a W530 isn't going to be far behind anything more modern.

I have no personal experience with eGPUs, but it should be possible to display on the laptop screen while doing processing on the eGPU but since you're using the one tiny PCIE connection to send that much data it ends up being pretty shit. About the heat, I'd make sure the BIOS is up to date, and make sure the iGPU is completely off when you're only using an external display.

I ordered an X201 a while ago from some refurbishing company.

But those guys, I don't know what they're smoking, they send me an HP Elitbook 2570p, so I called them about it and they told they'd set it straight.
So I'm waiting again, and another package arrived just a moment ago, I'm assuming it's the X201 but upon opening it, I find that it's yet ANOTHER 2570p.

This is really driving me nuts, I'm going to have to call them again and ask them what the fuck is going on.

Are you too much of a mouthbreather to just add your own? Any computer can have any amount of ram up till that point.

Because the cultish obsession with keyboards extends only to classic ones, so nobody who cares enough to swap keyboards is going to want, or need to swap in a chicklet keyboard.

I've never heard of it being attempted, but I'd assume you could make it work.
>Do the same controller flashing but with different firmware

wut

I only took off the keyboard, that's 2 screws. I'm not sure how many are there on the T420 but I don't think it'll be that different.

Heck all you have to be careful is the flex cable on the keyboard. The picture may not be good for it but basically the places I put foam under can be easily lifted with your finger because it's like cheap plastic.

Also remember, these things are pretty much designed so you can take them apart and fuck around. They labeled everything so you can open the thing. There's even an easily available operations manual for the fucking thing, though I heard that if you want to change the thermal paste it's a bit of a pain in the ass to put it back correctly (not more than other laptops, I fixed (and broke) quite a few in my time.

Since it's used, the keycaps will have been molded themselves over time fit the posture of the previous user and the shape of their fingers. I'd recommend that you lightly brush them down with petrol before doing some typing exercises or something else that gets you typing. The petrol will slightly liquify the keycaps and allow them to be remolded as you type.

If you just want to get it clean then isopropyl/rubbing alcohol will work fine.

I'd like to get one of these t420,t430,t520,t530. How difficult is it to upgrade the screens to hd hopefully fhd?
>>
>>59349333

T430s can use the Alienware 1600x900 TN screen (40$) with no modification. It's a nice screen, a worthy upgrade.

FHD need an adaptor board that will pull the signal from the dock connector (disponibility is spotty at best and you need to solder stuff to the mobo)
>>
>>59349166

>based on my anecdotal E6410 experience, you're wrong

k
>>
>>59349333
>14"
Have fun hunting down obscure panels and getting them to fit and sorting out adapters. 1600x900 is alright enough with a good panel though.

>15"
FHD screens were a factory option and panel in particular that was used is great. Upgrading it is mostly a case of getting the screen bezels off, unscrewing the original panel then swapping in the new one.
>>
>>59349381
K thanks. Know anything about the t5x0? I'm thinking about buying it with 1600x900 already.

>>59349407

nothing that I know of. I heard of screen mods for T530 but panels are super hard to find. Be wary of "compatible" panels...

For a T420/s and T430/s, buy this exact pannel: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221838703084?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

If you already have a 900p pannel, it's a drop-in replacement. If you have the 768p pannel, you need to get the longer LVDM cable from Lenovo (10$ max).

x230 here

Does anyone have any idea what to do with the ExpressCard slot? I was thinking of installing some form of SSD, but can't find anything online anywhere
>>
>>59349524
X1 Carbon 2016 or later. In 2015 the 1080p models still used a TN panel; only the WQHD was IPS
any T450s or later

the IPS panels on regular t4*0 series are horrible. only the Carbon and slim model Ts have decent screens
>>
>>59349677

You can use it as a eGPU connector. It's pointless to use it for storage, you already have msata and 2.5in sata. For people with x220, it can be a dual usb3 adaptator, pretty convenient. you could use it for esata.

For a x230, I don't see what you would use it for unless you hurting for usb ports or want more eSATA (kinda useless if you already have USB3.

You night be able to find a built-in mouse or slim remote-control that fit in the port.
>>
>>59349677
more usb ports, wwan or egpu
>>
>>59349686
>>59349553
Damn. Only two options...guess I'll get the slim T then. Really want one with a larger and better screen than my x220t.
I've also notice the t430s mobo is very similar to the t420s' do you think it's possible to get the t430s mobo and stuck it into a t420s housing? I got a t420s that has a messed up mobo
>>
>>59349773
t450s is your best bet since it has great battery life and an external battery

the t460s and t470s are just worse Carbons

Can someone explain why thinkpads /certain laptops still have that mouse joystick in the middle of the keyboard when it has a trackpad?

When would you ever use that joystick? I only use it when I'm in a meeting and I'm bored but I'm assuming that's not the main purpose of it.
>>
>>59349906

Dunno, maybe >>59335702 has seen hundreds of Latitudes and hundreds of Thinkpads and therefore has more data to judge from, but even if so, I don't think one could say Dell's keyboards are shit. Is this T430S worth 300 eurobucks?
i7 3520M, 8gb RAM, 240gb SSD, 14'' 1600x900 screen.

>>59350178
Not that guy but Dell keyboards are shit COMPARED to pre*40 series Thinkpad, that's well known, no doubts about that. They aren't complete shit tho, still better than any "consumer" laptops.

Screen are crappy, on both Latitudes and Thinkpads, crappyer than consumer grade laptops. I don't know why, maybe they expect people to use a docking station and external screen all the time.

>>
>>59350815

it's mSATA slot. The speed is limited to sata2 but the difference with sata3 in the real world is neglectable. You still get most of the advantages of ssd.
>>
>>59350830
It's more than enough for a main OS drive though.

I doubt you'll do transfers of large files between SATA3 SSDs regularly.
>>
>>59350869
>>59350870
I see. I already have a 128gb SSD SATA drive (a micron C400 that was included with the laptop, that is), but I'm looking to have some storage that is not mechanical.

Not sure if I will fuck myself if I decide to buy a big mSATA SSD.
>>
>>59350893

you can always salvage the mSATA into a 2.5in drive with an adaptator later down the line.

I don't get the T430s hate, I'd love to have something that does 95% of what a regular T430 can do (plus Thunderbolt which is pretty fucking cool) but with the z-height of an X series. My only T4/5xx series gripe besides the obvious is just that - they should really be less than 2.5cm tall.
