I've got a rather annoying laptop that my sister asked me to fix. It's an Asus X555LA and it is not booting to windows. Only the UEFI/BIOS. Its had this issue for a while now and thus far the solution was just to restore defaults, save and exit, then hoped it booted to windows. Yeah, they're kind of too humanoid for me.

There's a big theme of AI rights as a parallel to the various quests for equal rights that other groups have faced and largely won. In the QC universe (which I guess is a bit more advanced than ours), now that all humans are pretty much treated equally, robots are working to achieve the same thing, but it takes time.

But the way I see it, the notion of AI rights is completely at odds with the notion of software freedom. If your computer is actually a sentient being with the right to make its own decisions, then you're not in control of your computing, your computer itself is. That's kind of a third possibility beyond the two classic ones of "either the user controls the program or the developer, through the program, controls the user".

So I realized that "free software" doesn't mean that the software is free, it means that the user is free.
>>
>>59297058
Pinsize is still around humping things, they've just expanded their focus to include more of the world.

>>59299289
But not every computer is an AI. Hanelore for instance has a laptop because she doesn't want to watch porn on a sentient. The real problem is that AIs have so much computing power there's basically no way for humans to mount an effective defense against hacking any more. And Humans quit being the most powerful race a while ago, it's just the god bot doesn't give a fuck.

ISSUE:
>connecting anything to the USB 3.1 gen1 motherboard ports causes Windows 10 to use 70% of one core on my processor, for eternity, even after unplugging the USB peripheral (keyboard, flash drive, external hard drive etc).

SYMPTOMS:
>CPU bottlenecked programs and games take huge performance loss (~10fps on minimums, average, and maximum FPS) (GPU bottlenecked games does not get performance loss)
>single threaded programs suffer (multi threaded programs take less performance loss)

TEMPORARY FIX: reboot computer

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
>boot computer
>connect anything to USB 3.1 ports
>70% of first core gets constantly used by a Windows process (can't right click > properties on it)
>stays for that even after a log out and login
>lasts until computer is rebooted

PROBABLE CAUSE: Windows USB 3.1 drivers are shit?
*followup probable cause*: USB 3.0 Windows 10 anniversary update has caused many people's external hard drives to not show up, freeze computer or it just shows up as RAW.

TEMPORARY BYPASSES:
>Use USB 2.0 ports on motherboard.
>Use USB 3.0 ports on the computer case (connected via USB 3.0 internal header)
>only connect to USB 3.1 gen1 motherboard ports for transferring of files when I'm done with the computer and am shutting it down anyway.
>>
If you want to have a dual monitor setup but don't want to shell out exorbitant amounts of money for 144 Hz IPS monitors, would it make sense to do one 144 Hz TN monitor with a 60 Hz IPS monitor for games and creative work, respectively?
>>
>>59299738
I'm doing 120 + 60.
144 + 60 should work if the drivers do, and you can set both to 60 for splitscreen video games.
>>
>>59299409
Well, maybe Winslow just doesn't want anything to do with porn, but point taken. Actually I think Marten uses a laptop for porn too, which Pintsize told Dora about right before they broke up. So you could have your AI friends/pets/mutual companions, who have rights, and then your regular computers which are objects.

> The real problem is that AIs have so much computing power there's basically no way for humans to mount an effective defense against hacking any more.
Yeah, I'm always baffled at how individual the AIs are. You'd think they'd have formed more of a collective, especially now that the singularity has happened.

I'd guess that's what the mystery dudes from the last plot ark are about. It is interesting that AI don't seem to organize much. I think most of them are content to work within the existing system, so outliers would probably face a lot of resistance from both humans and other AI if they got out of line. I'd like to see more disension, but then again it's actually kind of nice to explore a scifi universe in which AI integration goes off more or less without a hitch just cause the AIs decide to roll with it

While I know they can read my chatting all fucking day on the computer and there isn't a damn thing I can do about it, and record every second I speak on my phone, I can at least prevent them from hearing and seeing me in my own house.

At the very least I want to control what information people get on in a reasonable manner.

What is the purpose of Nvidia's Titan graphics cards, if 1080/1080Ti is stronger and cheaper?
When the first Titan came out, it was an "OMG SUPER CARD FOR THE RIDICULOUS PRICE OF ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!", and when the 1080 came out it was an "OMG a card better than everything that has come before, only cheaper!". Now I watched the 1080Ti announcement and heard the presenter say just how better it is from the Titan. I checked Nvidia's website and the listen Titan costs like 1.2k$.

I have a new monitor (SAMSUNG LC27F390FHUXEN) and for some reason my Linux has some problems with it. Everything is just a bit too contrasty. Details disappear into the black too soon. It has a contrast ratio of 3000:1 rather than the 1000:1 my old one had and its black point is lower, so it can actually create very dark blacks rather than just slightly dimmer greys.
I use Linux for Blender and DarkTable, and Windows for Gaymen.
My main issue is that the contrast is all too strong on Linux but fine on windows, so it can't be an issue with the monitor itself. I found no evidence of a driver being necessary. Is there a linux programm that I can use to adjust something like that before it goes out to the display device?
No, the contrast setting on the monitor are not an option. they barely do anything anyways

But does anyone know how to flash a rom onto a chinese tablet when I can't activate debug mode in android settings?

It's a cube iwork8air, originally it had dual OS but I killed the android portion and have it running windows only right now, although it still has the option in the boot screen. I have access to the uefi bios, Fast DNS boot does nothing. I assume there's a way to activate usb debugging in windows?

But all the googling in the world has only led to options requiring debug mode or to install androidx86.

>>

>Is the i7 6700k a good choice, if i want it to last about 5 years?
yeap, should be fine, assuming you can get it on some discount, since 7700k is whats the latest intels offering

with decent budget like yours seems to be I would be buying ryzen r7 1700 that comes around $320 and you get 8 cores / 16 threads
which as far as future proofing gets is the best thing you can get.

>And despite the right board for the i7, what are the features i have to look in moatherboards?

if you OCing you want Z chipset
and in that category usually all mobos are fine in build quality, meaning solid state cappacitors and enough phases and shit

I like to to find mobo with intel LAN and maybe bit better audio
usb-c should be there too

>>
>>59303700
depends for what, on the application, but currently I would say ryzen is the best long term investment

in productivity it beats intel hands down cleanly from transcoding, to virtualmachines, to compiling, to 3d rendering,... you name it

Then theres games, 7700k have lead there, but the moment you go on normal resolutions it becomes close.
And consider that all the consoles are currently at 8 cores AMD cpus... current and future games are getting hell of an aim for multithreading

And remember ryzen will do those 4ghz, it just wont OC much above that. so the gap is much smaller.

if you CS pro gamer, or dota with some 144hz monitor, then maybe every edge counts in those old engine games, but if you are regular user then ryzen is long term objectively better choice, the optimalizations it gets in this and next year will make it only better and better

nothing much you can do about that

Every time I cold boot my computer the graphics card refuses to output any video signal, requiring me to plug into the motherboard & use integrated graphics. What is the 00 key you see on some keypads? If I were wiring up my own 3x4 matrix keypad and threw a teensy on it, what keycode does it even send?

Anyone has any idea for this?

Ignore anyone else as they clearly know nothing.

>disable HPET
>disable Xbox DVR
>remove GFE

Anyone experiencing lower than expected performance, stuttering or anything else weird, start with these.

For example disabling HPET put my Witcher 3 FPS from 41 to 75 maxed out standing in Novigrad.

I'm tech illiterate, how good is this computer, is the pricing fair, and what sort of games would I be able to run on it:

Something thats been bugging me.

I play an online game, located relatively close to the server, usually play with 10-15ms ping. Whenever I open a locally stored video to watch on my 2nd monitor my ping will spike to 600ms and then hover around 200-300ms.

I've tried looking at network activity but nothing really stood out, I'm on Windows 10.
>>
>>59306114
Also, I can watch Netflix on my 2nd monitor with no impact on my games ping.
>>
>>59306078
It's pretty good for gayming. You can certainly run latest games on medium.
Still, I quit gaming few years ago. Someone else might elaborate (perhaps on /v/).

what's the math function called where you add a number by x times

It's called an arithmetic series, you brutes. The sum is (n2+n)/2.
>>
>>59306581
>>59306564
should look like this:
int function(int n) {
int x = 0;
for (int i = 1; i <= n; i++) {
x+=i;
}
return x
}

I mean it's easy enough to write but I was wondering if there's a standard math function for it?

>>59306723
It's not that difficult to see if you just expand a few numbers of the series: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, &c You can then prove the correctness using induction. There are surely other methods too.

My brother works for a small company, and their boss has been wanting a website. So he goes "My brother is great with computers. He can get us a website up and running within the week!". So the bossman says "Sounds good, make it happen!". That's how I got my first gig as a freelance web designer.

The only problem is that I don't know how to make a fucking website. My brother just assumed I could, because he thinks I'm smart and know everything. So, how boned am I? Can I learn how to put together a basic website in a few days? Also, this will be a really small website, so can I have it running on a Windows computer that's being used in their office, or should I get them to pay for a hosting service?
>>
>>59305259
why not doing this instead?
Install a minimal working linux system, autostart fullscreen MAME in openbox.
Mame already starts with the last game you played selected so that's it.
>>
>>59306767
No it wasn't. You were being a pretentious mook who tries to feel better about himself because you were taught mathematics by good teachers. You didn't have a "point". You had a blunt emotional attack.

Fuck off with your pretentious ego driven bullshit. I realize that is par for the course in Occidental institutional mathematics where every shitheel is trying to get their name attached to some esoteric theorem rather than naming things meaningfully, but it doesn't fucking fly here, bucko.
>>
>>59306779

>>
>>59306828

No, my point is that it's simple enough that there's no excuse to not trying to grasp the stuff instead of just using it blindly.

Is there a way to check if a tablet has been used before?

I bought a new one and the battery life is kinda shit. It looks new, but maybe they used it before to show it to other clients, then did a factory reset or something to sell it as new.
>>
>>59306779
>>59306841

Just use wordpress's free hosting service. If it's a simple non-interactive website (and not a sales/store portal), you can get something set up pretty dang quick.

wix is another that I've seen a bunch of ads for and know some people who use it, but idk if it can have a custom domain, which is a cheap and easy way to be a cool kid on the internet.

You don't want to be hosting a website from some small company office in 2017. That's just asking to get pwned by every hacker from here to Shanghai.
>>
>>59306847
Like many mathematicians, you are making bad assumptions and arguing from them rather than sitting the fuck down and shutting the fuck up when you are wrong about everything.
>>
>>59306779
Depends on the website. If it's just static content, then all you have to do is write some HTML and CSS, which should be easy enough for anyone to learn in a few days, if nothing fancy is required. HTML is clumsy and inelegant, but not particularly hard.

As for hosting, you *can* run it on a Windows computer in their office, but that may require you setting up port forwarding and routing and stuff for it, and/or following some dynamic IP address in DNS. It may be a better idea to pay for a really cheap hosting service anyway, especially if they want the site to stay up during electrical outages or ISP downtime or whatever.
>>
>>59306913
>bad assumptions
Like it being simple? Wasn't it you yourself who agreed that it wasn't complicated?
>>
>>59306818
Most of the games I want to play will not run in MAME and instead run on embedded windows XP/7 systems in arcades.

every few/several days my computer just randomly stops displaying anything (no signal found). usually the audio continues to work but the last time it sounded like it froze up. only a reboot fixes it

started happening a few months ago, nothing had really changed, hadn't messed with drivers in ages, tried updating & clean reinstalling but the black screens keep happening

is my gpu dying or wat?
>>
>>59306962
Not unlikely. If you were running Linux, there'd probably be traces in the syslog and/or X-server log to see what was happening, but if you're running Windows, I don't imagine there are any such things.
>>
>>59306886
Wordpress is looking pretty good.

>>59306919
It's just simple pictures, texts, and links. Cheap hosting service seems like the winner. Thanks y'all.

Stupid Question:

For desktops, why not just run Windows host OS for gaming/3D work, and a GNU/Linux VM used as a main work desktop?

Would it not mean you have best of both worlds?
>>
>>59308739
well if you are a a foss nerd you may be ideologically opposed to using windows

plus you have to deal with the pain of restarting to switch OSes when you have been using one but need something from the other
