If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I just installed playonlinux for the first time ever. I've wanted to play some windows games on steam, but some of the modding applications (fallout new vegas, etc.) require packages that can only be installed in a 32-bit prefix of wine when I've installed the 64-bit. It seems play on linux will allow me to have both at the same time and interchange between them reliably.

I see that there are a number of wine versions available in x86 and amd64.

My question is, is there a recommend version of wine that I should use or should I just install the latest version of wine for x86 and amd64?

Can someone explain me rofi's -dmenu option?
Sure, it's supposed to work like dmenu, but how I used dmenu was like rofi's run window.
You can add scripts, but what's the use if you manually have to call the script to pipe it into rofi? And I can't use it if I have to have a different keybind for each script.

Any mpd/alsa masters around?

I have two audio outs:

1) external AMP/DAC for headphones
2) monitor speakers connected over HDMI

Now, I'd like to setup alsa & mpd so when I play music, mpd doesn't do software decoding when sending audio to external AMP/DAC and I'd like to do software decoding when sending to monitor speakers... since I don't give a shit about quality when I use speakers.

How do I do this?

>Beyond just GNOME apps and tools being stripped of options, Red Hat employee and lead GNOME developer William Jon McCann was caught opening a bug report on the independent Transmission BitTorrent client telling the developers that its panel notification feature should be removed. Why? Merely because GNOME 3 no longer supports a panel: “Transmission has an option in the Desktop tab of the preferences to ‘Show Transmission icon in the notification area’. This should probably be removed.” Transmission developer Charles replied, “So now we can have three builds of Transmission that decide at compile time whether to use AppIndicator, GtkStatusIcon or nothing at all… Removing it altogether, as you suggest, will hurt Xfce users.” McCann replied, “I guess you have to decide if you are a GNOME app, an Ubuntu app, or an Xfce app unfortunately… And I have no idea what Xfce is or does, sorry. It is my hope that you are a GNOME app.” Charles’s reply to this: “*speechless*”.

>Can we really and seriously believe that William Jon McCann, described as one of the main driving forces behind the concepts of GNOME 3, doesn’t know what Xfce is? What are the consequences of having a large corporation like Red Hat (perhaps with strong influence from the ultra-wealthy Google) in control of widely used open source projects like GNOME and GTK, with its teams of developers routinely altering their APIs in unpredictable, erratic ways and offering no real support to independent projects using their libraries? It’s clear that with the advent of GNOME 3, GNOME has become a corporate product solely created for and controlled by Red Hat.

Debian works fine as a desktop OS. All you have to do is realize that being bleeding edge for the sake of being bleeding edge is pointless ricer crap, like the whole of Arch is. imo bleeding edge is the way to go, and it seems distro maintainers whats to take this path.

Personally I prefer using a bleeding edge distro because I like having the latest kernel, drivers, etc. since recent updates improved a lot my experience in games.

I tried debian testing but after some time went into some troubles. I guess it's quite normal for a distribution made for test purpose.
>>
Ok, so I am have trouble adding a volume icon to my panel in XFCE. When I go to add new item I don't see any volume package.

I downloaded volumeicon package, which I can run from command line and it adds it to the panel. But, when I go to add new items I don't see it or any other volume managers listed.

>>imo bleeding edge is the way to go, and it seems distro maintainers whats to take this path.
They want to do that because it's easiest for them, not necessarily out of concern about whats easiest for you
>Personally I prefer using a bleeding edge distro because I like having the latest kernel, drivers, etc. since recent updates improved a lot my experience in games.
That's fine if you actually notice improvements and use the new things that are coming out. A lot don't, though. And without that the knowledge that you're on the latest version isn't worth anything. An older version with security support will be no practical difference and a lot less trouble, if someone, unlike you, isn't doing anything where improvements will be immediately noticed.
>I tried debian testing but after some time went into some troubles. I guess it's quite normal for a distribution made for test purpose.
Its normal for any rolling-release distro that keeps roughly current with the latest releases. Hence my assertion that most people would be happier on an LTS distro.

antergos, the volume icon was there in GNOME, but that DE was crashing a lot for some reason so I am trying out XFCE. I think the same thing with Slackware

It would not be false to the facts, but it is not the best thing to do. Here are the reasons we call that system version “GNU/Linux” rather than just “GNU”:

It's not exactly GNU—it has a different kernel (that is, Linux). Distinguishing GNU/Linux from GNU is useful.
It would be ungentlemanly to ask people to stop giving any credit to Linus Torvalds. He did write an important component of the system. We want to get credit for launching and sustaining the system's development, but this doesn't mean we should treat Linus the same way those who call the system “Linux” treat us. We strongly disagree with his political views, but we deal with that disagreement honorably and openly, rather than by trying to cut him out of the credit for his contribution to the system.
Since many people know of the system as “Linux”, if we say “GNU” they may simply not recognize we're talking about the same system. If we say “GNU/Linux”, they can make a connection to what they have heard about.
>>
>>59244516
because you can have GNU without the Linux kernel
but you can't have Linux without something GNU, because you need GCC to build the kernel (officialy)
there are some Clang ports to build the Linux kernel however

and as autistic as it may or may not be, it is nice to be recognized for your contributions
>>
>>59244516
Mostly it's because they're salty that Linux came around and stole their thunder. They think Linux took the future that rightfully belonged to them, so they want to claim credit for it.
>>

When we ask people to say “GNU/Linux”, we are not dividing people. We are asking them to give the GNU Project credit for the GNU operating system. This does not criticize anyone or push anyone away.

However, there are people who do not like our saying this. Sometimes those people push us away in response. On occasion they are so rude that one wonders if they are intentionally trying to intimidate us into silence. It doesn't silence us, but it does tend to divide the community, so we hope you can convince them to stop.

However, this is only a secondary cause of division in our community. The largest division in the community is between people who appreciate free software as a social and ethical issue and consider proprietary software a social problem (supporters of the free software movement), and those who cite only practical benefits and present free software only as an efficient development model (the open source movement).

This disagreement is not just a matter of names—it is a matter of differing basic values. It is essential for the community to see and think about this disagreement. The names “free software” and “open source” are the banners of the two positions.

The disagreement over values partially aligns with the amount of attention people pay to the GNU Project's role in our community. People who value freedom are more likely to call the system “GNU/Linux”, and people who learn that the system is “GNU/Linux” are more likely to pay attention to our philosophical arguments for freedom and community (which is why the choice of name for the system makes a real difference for society). However, the disagreement would probably exist even if everyone knew the system's real origin and its proper name, because the issue is a real one. It can only go away if we who value freedom either persuade everyone (which won't be easy) or are defeated entirely (let's hope not).

Nope. It still talks to Google and unless you're willing to compile it yourself with the ungoogled-chromium patch set, you can't stop it. Well, or you could dump Google domains into your hosts file, but then you have to keep up with all the domains they use. Among other things it reports every site you visit to the mothership with Google Safebrowsing, (Firefox has this too and it's on by default, but you can at least turn it off) and for certificate-transparency stuff. Now certificate transparency is a good thing, don't get me wrong, but not when the only log server it'll talk to is Google's.

I did this for MythTV back in the day, with ion3, one of the early tiling wms. It could be set to open each new window fullscreen on a new desktop.

The main takeaway was that using a wm was really useful:
>"everything fullscreen always" is a form of window management, and if the program decides it wants to resize, it should be put back in place.
>it's really useful to be able to manually intervene, e.g. when you get an error popup or want to switch to an xterm

You don't use Linux inside a terminal emulator. You use programs inside a terminal emulator with your shell.
Learn how to use the programs and your shell. The reason you're not learning it is because there's no use for you. If you actually had to use it, you'd slowly learn how to. There is no point in reading books or other information about it, because you'll never utilize the knowledge and forget it after 5 minutes.

Speed is a buzzword you fell for. There is no significant in difference between "speed". What do you even mean by speed? You don't know, you most likely talk about the 0,002 seconds difference in rendering certain websites which goes both ways and the 0,2 second difference in startup time for a program you open once every computing session.

Don't automatically strawman people, I always knew FF was more free, but the streamlined way of doing anything in Chrome just felt far better than FF for the longest time. Yes it was faster, noticeably, so I don't know how you're talking about 0.002 seconds differences or whatever. I've used a SSD since 2012 so for me the difference has become less noticeable, but 4 years back it was still there.

>>59252879

This isn't Google Chrome specific, it's just common sense.
You use proprietary software and you ask such a question. The default is "no", you "cannot trust it". Who encrypts it? With what?
Secondly, you use a proprietary browser, which theoretically means they could see every website you try to load (at least the URL, not content; I don't know much about https), yet you're not worried about that?

I just don't understand you.
>>
>>59252910

>personally dont do anything that I would care about if it got leaked in some way
You must be lying, because I doubt people like that exist. I'm not even a sociable or normal person, yet my internet browsing data reveals so much private stuff.
People always assume it must be some illegal activity, but it's not. It's private things like having certain embarrassing illnesses or taking trips you've kept secret from some close people.
>>

yea i google and look at some freaky shit but honestly i surround myself with people that would not really care or get over it real quick

>>
>>59252992
>Who encrypts it? With what?
You encrypt it with a password. Obviously I'm hoping Google are honest enough to actually do the encryption and not just trick me into giving up my passwords.

Its really just convenience, you get to have your passwords synced across all your devices where Chrome runs and you don't run into issues of forgetting passwords or forgetting what accounts you're signed up for.

Of course I'm worried about both things, but convenience seems to override all my concerns I guess. I just get sick of recording this stuff, when a company like Google offloads it for you then I just end up saying 'okay here you go'.

And then I get 2nd thoughts a few years later and start to wonder if it was a good idea to give them so much info about me.

>Here comes the airplane waaaaaaaa
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Multiheaded-NVIDIA-Gaming-using-Ubuntu-14-04-KVM-585/

It is for an older version than the current 16.04, but seems fairly in depth and might work I don't know yet. Based on what I have read so far you have to check if your motherboard, CPU, and GPU support vt-d and vt-x which are required to pass the hardware itself to the Virtual Machine.

I checked and my H97-ME, GTX980, and I7 4790 support vt-x and vt-d. You might have to enable them in the bios prior because they might be disabled by default on your system.

When I did that my system fucked up and wouldn't boot sending me to grub rescue. I then found out that installing the latest bios generally solves this issue so I did just that and flashed my mobo to latest version.

Then my whole fucking system froze at the post screen for an hour despite claiming flashing operation successful. I fucking freaked out spending hours doing trial and error diagnosing the problem until only recently fixing my boot issue by removing display port using only a single DVI and tearing apart all my Peripherals including all SATA hard drives plugging nothing but a USB disk with Ubuntu on it and a keyboard then for some magical reason it posted.

And now I can FINALLY get started...FML

All the old windows styles had slightly warm colors but it's hard to find themes like that. Most have cold colors or white themes (or "dark themes")

you can sort of defrag by copying everything off, formatting, and putting everything back on, or you can defrag/chkdsk without leaving linux by attaching the disk to a virtual machine running windows

>I have no idea what you mean by this. Why can't old looking themes be pixel perfect?
what i mean is that most "looks like old themes" themes only resemble the old theme, and aren't perfectly accurate (pixel-perfect)
like the buttons don't quite line up the same, or the borders are off-color, or whatever

while what i've got in icewm is more accurate than the win95 theme that ships with it, icewm's theme engine is too limited to make it pixel-perfect (at least without modifying icewm's source code)

Oh ok. But I don't want EITHER of those.

I neither want something that's trying to look like windows as much as possible but without being perfect, nor a perfect windows theme clone

My point is that windows doesn't have dibs on that art style.
It seems like people are either trying to avoid looking like windows at all, or they're trying to make windows theme clones.

Why can't people just make themes that encroach on the windows look territory but without trying to actually look like windows.
Pic related is probably the best example I have, it's "Raleigh" and used to be the default in GTK

Almost everyone in developed countries really does know that the “Windows” system is made by Microsoft, so shortening “Microsoft Windows” to “Windows” does not mislead anyone as to that system's nature and origin. Shortening “GNU/Linux” to “Linux” does give the wrong idea of where the system comes from.
>>
>>59254709

Who said it was shortened? Did god come down on a cloud from heaven one day and say "henceforth all operating systems shall be named by the format primary_software_organization / kernel_name"?

Microsoft is the company and it considers its operating system to be named "Windows", not "Microsoft slash Windows" or "Microsoft plus Windows".

I like Stallman but I'm sorry, he's technically wrong on this point. There is no law or rule for how operating systems are named.
The simple fact is people don't want to fucking call it "GNU/Linux". He'd probably get a lot further in promoting GNU if he pushed for everyone to just call it the GNU operating system and cut out "Linux" entirely.
"GNU slash Linux" is just a fucking ridiculous clumsy mouthful and everyone knows it.

>just GNU

Not bad.

By the way, the reason I've been making these posts about themes anyway is because of GTK3. On GTK2 I had a few options (like the Raleigh one I posted)

But GTK3 has nothing that I've been able to find because it broke all its earlier themes, people have to make new ones, and they aren't making any like Raleigh, or that opus one you mentioned.
I really need someone to make something nice for GTK3

Alright so what about "GNU-Linux" then? Which would just be pronounced "GNU Linux"
It's so retarded to have to verbally say "slash" or "plus"

I really don't think it's as trivial as just who gets credit. If this is such an important issue for Stallman then he really should have put more thought into his gameplan, because honestly I can tell you he is NEVER going to win on this point solely for the reason that people just don't want to say it that way. Period.

I'm sure a smart guy like him could come up with a better way no? It's like he doesn't actually want to win.

To care only about what's convenient or who's winning is an amoral approach to life. Non-free software is an example of that amoral approach and thrives on it. Thus, in the long run it would be self-defeating for us to adopt that approach. We will continue talking in terms of right and wrong.

if you don't like "slash" or "plus", what about "gnu and linux" or "gnu with linux"?
moreover, if you're the kind to avoid just "linux", why not just call it "gnu"?
>>
>>59255167
>>59255222
People don't want to do it that way, and they never will.
It's honestly as simple as this:
They want one nice, simple, small, easy to roll off the tongue, name for the entire package.

That's it. They might acknowledge that it is technically "GNU/Linux" and even be willing to write it that way in technical documents or whatever. But in casual conversation "GNU slash Linux" is simply retarded and will never catch on.
It's that simple.

There is no official rules for how to name something. Its makeup, or who gets credit is irrelevant, we could could call it "poopOS" and nobody would give a fuck (in fact people would probably greatly prefer that over "GNU slash Linux")

I mean, he could try to come up with something else then like "GNUX" or something if he wants both to be a part of the name so bad. GNUX actually is something that could actually catch on and would give them both credit.
"GNU slash Linux" is simply a failure.

Arch is mostly right-wing but non-inclusive, more like survivalists than nationalists. Every user is expected to be a developer and vice-versa, if you have nothing to contribute you can fuck off.
