If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I work in a web hosting company as a level 2 support monkey. I know how to get around our systems pretty well. We have cPanel servers as well as a shitty cloud. I'm just too easy perhaps, not too critical when it comes to things.

Never have distrohopped to gentoo though, never got memed into it. but have worked with the command line a fair amount, so I'll look into playing with it on a spare machine.

Hello /fglt/.
I want to try out a Linux in a virtual machine and have determined from what little i could understand that Trisquel seems most desirable to me because of the looks, the specific pre installed software (Some of which I am familiar with) and freedoms it has.
However my concern is how easy is it for a beginner to set up and use, and also is there any other distribution that has those factors i mentioned that I like, only better?
I have no prior experience with Linux.
My purpose for using it is to learn about Linux in general, its CLI and how to program using Emacs in language C.
>>
>>59152201
Triquel is as easy as Ubuntu.
>>
>>59152201
Trisquel has no devs and using it is basically just a statement "hurr GNU durr". Just use Debian and don't add non-free repos if freedoms is what you want. Debian has thousands of devs.
>>
>>59152222
fuck off troll
>>
>>59152240
Have you even checked Trisquel's development? Fuck, you GNU/Retards are so stupid
>>
>>59152201
You will get absolutely zero (0) benefits from using Trisquel over *buntu (which Trisquel is based on) if you're going to use it in a VM.

The only difference between Trisquel and Ubuntu is the deblobbed kernel which doesn't fucking matter if you're not going to run in on actual hardware.

Stop being silly.

No, Windows cannot turn on your computer if you turned it off. If it's in stadby however, then the Update Orchestrator scheduled task can wake it up. You can disable this behaviour in task scheduler.

No, but if it can access shared folders from your host system with write access, ransomware might encrypt your files there. Share your main folders in read only mode only and set up a DESIGNATED writeable folder for file exchange.

Almost every desktop environment allows your to remove the taskbar. Windows managers on their own, per definition, don't deal with task-bar stuff, so every window manager "alone" won't have a taskbar.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I don't recommend *buntu/Fedora/etc. because although you can make your system barebones, it involves uninstalling default shit, which is rarely a good idea. It's easy and safer to build a system up than tear it down.

Arch has dozens of child distros with easy setup, for both installation and package management.

It's the same thing. IceWeasel is renamed Firefox on Debian because copyright problems.

iceweasel: back then Mozilla didn't allow Debian to use the name "Firefox" because Debian changed the codebase of the browser. To avoid "confusion", debian decided to call it Iceweasel, because it's neither fire or fox.
Around 1-2 years ago Mozilla recognized that patches/changes made by fucking Debian are definitely not a bad thing and won't put any dirt on their brand name and let them use the Firefox name since.

Icecat: a version of Firefox made by FSF and free-as-in-stallman: it ships with a number of free software addons (spyblock, librejs, httpsanywhere etc), has some extra privacy features, doesn't recommend non-free plugins/addons and has its own repo of FLOSS addons.

While the Iceweasel/Firefox on Debian has essential the same outcome, I heard different stories for the reasoning.
One of the other stories was that since Debian heavily changes and patches most packages, it made things harder for Mozilla in at least two ways: people reporting Debian specific bugs upstream and slightly "altering" the Firefox experience. I also heard that the Debian maintainers can't keep up with maintaining it, so they're falling back to the "default" upstream Firefox. That one sounds very unlikely though.
I don't know which of those are the most true.

From what I read there were 3 major problems
-FF logo was under a license which did not conform the DFSG
-mozilla released ESR releases in 9 month cycles, 2x-3x faster than debian released their new stable versions
-debian included patches that were not previously approved by mozilla

Time passed and now
-FF logo is under a completely free license
-Debian only maintains ESR versions as long as Mozilla does. Once an ESR is over, debian changes versions in stable (which is kinda out of ordinary from them)
-professional Mozilla devs who are also long time debian devs are in charge of FF in debian, so there shouldn't be problem with patches

It is right and proper to mention the principal contribution first. The GNU contribution to the system is not only bigger than Linux and prior to Linux, we actually started the whole activity.

However, if you prefer to call the system “Linux/GNU”, that is a lot better than what people usually do, which is to omit GNU entirely and make it seem that the whole system is Linux.

For a while we tried the name “LiGNUx”, which combines the words “GNU” and “Linux”. The reaction was very bad. People accept “GNU/Linux” much better.

The shortest legitimate name for this system is “GNU”, but we call it “GNU/Linux” for the reasons given below:

It would not be false to the facts, but it is not the best thing to do. Here are the reasons we call that system version “GNU/Linux” rather than just “GNU”:

- It's not exactly GNU—it has a different kernel (that is, Linux). Distinguishing GNU/Linux from GNU is useful.
- It would be ungentlemanly to ask people to stop giving any credit to Linus Torvalds. He did write an important component of the system. We want to get credit for launching and sustaining the system's development, but this doesn't mean we should treat Linus the same way those who call the system “Linux” treat us. We strongly disagree with his political views, but we deal with that disagreement honorably and openly, rather than by trying to cut him out of the credit for his contribution to the system.
- Since many people know of the system as “Linux”, if we say “GNU” they may simply not recognize we're talking about the same system. If we say “GNU/Linux”, they can make a connection to what they have heard about.

gentoo is a 10/10 distro
arch is maybe 6-7/10

Fuck that, I'd rather buy a new card than use that abomination. It's not even the devs' fault, it's Nvidia being assholes.

>>59168490
The only time I had problems before this incident was when I started using Debian Sid with the Nvidia drivers straight from Nvidia's site. That was maybe 10 months ago? Now it's all from apt and I got this.

daily reminder that dual booting is self cucking.

all(most) of the speed, none of the risk.

Is there something wrong with Chrome on Linux? It seems to be using much more RAM than Windows. I couldn't figure out what was bottlenecking my system when trying to play a game, used the 'top' command and was at 10-12 out of 16Gb, wtf?

What you're referring to as Chome is literally botnet as defined by Google, which is part of the NSA surveillence program "PRISM".

Fuck me. Fuck, I guess I'll pick up nouveau while the RX480 ships. What did I need to do again? I removed the nvidia driver and still have the nouveau driver installed. I also went ahead and backed up the xorg.conf whilst removing the blacklist files.

But clearly its Nvidias fault. And the maintainers. And everyone.

Anon, it has been this way for more than 10 months. Nouveau was blacklisted properly at the time. Stop being a smartass.

The Android OS is already using Linux (the kernel).

Like this

>>
>>59170192
not exactly, the kernel on android is yet another linux fork with patching by google
so technically, it's a linux fork, not the original linux
>>
>>59170209
trivial... that's like saying debian isn't using the original linux because they removed its blobs, but it's still called debian gnu/linux
>>
>>59170209
It's still Linux, and which distro ships vanilla kernels anyway?

I've never tried Trisquel, but Debian is incredibly simple. The installer isn't as normie-friendly as Ubuntu, but it's still pretty much a case of clicking next.

Is there a commandline switch for 'history that will flush the results?
It's gotten to be too long of a list that I don't know a switch to make the list fit the screen.
>>
>>59171226
what
>>
>>59171365
Console commandline if you type in
history
You get a list of all the commands issued.
Is there a way to flush the que and restart the list?
It's over 200, the screen can't fit 200 entries so you have to use a switch on the history command to display a range of the numbers but that's just guessing where the thing you were looking for is in the stack.

i'm not 100% sure what you're asking but try
less $HISTFILE

and tell me how close i was
