If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or Mac.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

A while ago someone mentioned that on some (but not all) distros, apropos is a symlink to whatis.
I checked for myself, and on debian stable apropos is indeed symlinked to whatis.

However, I get different results from the 2 commands.
There are no extra options hidden in aliases, so what is this black magic?
>>
>>59127888
yo, 888, can you tell me about a DE / distro / lookalike of windows?
it should literally work like windows - double click to run videos and shiet, etc. [ bonus points for having most useful software preinstalled like any linux distro]
i'm not into gaymen, so trying to move to linux.
>>
>>59128125
Most GNU/Linux distros which come with a DE like GNOME, MATE, KDE all do this. Looks are easy customizeable too. For a beginner, I'd recommend any favor of *buntu.
>>
>>59127979
Maybe the program checks how it was invoked (args[0]) and does different things depending on that

So I want to dual boot Windows 8.1 alongside Fedora and I want to make sure I've gotten this right. I have two HDDs, and I want to install Fedora on the one not containing Windows.

So first I would use Disk Management to make a new partition on the second HDD, since right now it's only one big partition. Then I'd make a bootable USB with Fedora on it, boot from the USB and when installing Fedora I just pick the partition that I previously created and I'm good to go? Anything else I should keep in mind? From my understanding I wouldn't lose have to lose anything on my second HDD when creating a new partition as well. Am I all set?
>>
>>59128264
Yes, provided you don't fuck up and install Fedora on the wrong drive.
>>
>>59128262
It wierd, apropos wget shows 3 results whatis shows one and it's literally just a link.

Is there anything concerning UEFI/BIOS or fast boot that I should worry about or look into?
>>
>>59127979
Programs can check how they were invoked. For example, when bash was invoked as "sh", it enters a POSIX compatible mode and will run faster and without bash's extensions. Same happens with whatis and apropos.
>>
>>59128368
No, you're installing it on a different drive. If you're feeling paranoid and have no backups, remove the Windows drive. You can put it back later after you installed Fedora.

The expression “the Linux kernel” can easily be misunderstood as meaning “the kernel of Linux” and implying that Linux must be more than a kernel. You can avoid the possibility of this misunderstanding by saying or writing “the kernel, Linux” or “Linux, the kernel.”

I have just installed Ubuntu onto a laptop. I'm a student games dev at uni, and I am really used to visual studio and Unreal engine. I also enjoy making websites and other random things, I just love learning what I can do with programming.

I really need help however. I know from here, that Linux is just amazing for programming, and I know there's such thing called the toolchain which I am yet to learn, but Im just bamboozled when it comes to the methods of programming. I can't seem to build and run any of my programs made in uni, there's always something missing or something not quite right. If all these issues keep arising, how can I be sure that programming on my laptop is reliable? I can't just go 'I'll finish it on my laptop' as I usually spend hours looking up as to what the problem is.

Sorry for the long reply, just feeling a little lost. No one I know has Linux and I feel like I'm just handicapping myself trying to work with it. I like to use Monogame and C#, but unless I use monodevelop (which is awful at high DPI, plus im not a fan of it anyway), I can't build anything yet again as libraries are missing and loads of other bollocks.

Anyone feel like giving me some inspiration and a bit of a clue as to how to feel excited about linux even further? I like the terminal for the commands I do know, it's just building things in c++ and other files I get a bit frustrated with

Continued

I'm using VS code - I don't understand vim or emacs due to the fact I think slower than I type, and with all the programming I've done so far, I spend more time scrolling through code and looking for problems than I do typing, so I have no need to keep my fingers on the home row. Am I a special case, or am I just making excuses and will see the light eventually? I mean you have to admit the likes of VS is nice to program on (as well as looking nice too). The thing is, even on VS code I can't program shit unless I use a template I make on my windows machine and edit it - I can't do much from scratch?

Using ubuntu 16.10. So what the hell is going on? Somehow I fear the radeon driver uses RAM instead of the memory on the graphics card. Please send help.

It should be using amdgpu instead of radeon. Do you have any setting put up to prevent it from loading? What's the kernel version you are running (uname -r)?
>>
>>59135536
I tried installing amdgpu-pro, but amdgpu always fails with a segmentation fault on xinit. Reinstalled my OS like 5 times because of that, never worked. Apparently r9 290s only have limited support and I would have to compile the kernel myself to make it work.

>would have to compile the kernel myself to make it work
IMHO you should do that as long as you don't have a weird setup (custom modules like Virtualbox or something weird)
wget kernel.org/[WHATEVER THE LATEST VERSION IS]
tar xf linux-*
cd linux-*
make oldconfig
make -j[NUMBER OF CORES]
sudo make modules_install && sudo make install
sudo reboot

>amdgpu-pro
that's the proprietary one, right? In my experience the FOSS ones work more reliably than the closed source ones, even if they are a it slower/less power efficient)

>>59135611
that isn't too out of date, but it is still worth upgrading manually IMHO

>I want something that constantly rolls, but without upgrades

I think a good compromise is Debian Testing. You'll need to install Debian Jessie first, change your sources to testing (note: not stretch) and you'll be good to go.

It's up to date, testing gets it updates a week or so behind sid, which is a clusterfuck. But don't worry, they are very stable updates.

It has binary packages, don't have to learn anything new, use it like you would ubuntu or mint.

It has a decent sized community. We have a forum and several IRC channels filled with friendly people who love helping each other. We also have tons of developers and packagers.

The wiki is also fuckhuge and filled with tons of documentation, lots of stuff from the archwiki and the gentoowiki can be applied to Debian. You can also leverage the Ubuntu documentation which is also fuckhuge and has everything you could ever want answered by AskUbuntu.

You should also consider Gentoo.

-Compilation increases system performance provided you use the correct C/USEFLAGS

-Compiling your own kernel increases the performance a LOT. Kernels in Debian and such are bloated with support for all hardware. This is the reason you could take a hard disk from one GNU/Linux machine and use it an another without issue.

- You can easily change the software using patches/diffs. You think GNU/Linux is customizable? Wait until you learn C/C++ and start making your own Gentoo overlays, or use others.

- You can disable shit you don't need by using compiler flags, resulting in faster and smaller sized binaries.

etc etc. Gentoo is not for new users, but if you're an advanced user who wants true stability and security, Gentoo is for you. Debian is also very secure, and is easily hardened by installing a few packages, having general security knowledge, and setting the right sysctl values.
>>
>>59140228

>You'll need to install Debian Jessie first, change your sources to testing (note: not stretch) and you'll be good to go.
nah, just use testing/daily .iso's

At least last year the testing installer was also a LOT better than the old stable installer.
>>
>>59140389
I roll with Gentoo and I haven't seen a major performance increase. I think its greatest point is the customization possibilities with USE flags. It's great to completely remove all unnecessary KDE or systemd dependencies with a simple config edit.

From my experience, the Plasma compositor is quite finicky and often has a shitty default setting. You may try to change it's renderer setting to a different one, although that often causes other bugs to emerge. Curious why I can't hear anything through the headset outside of Discord. It's clearly working because I can hear through the one application, but nothing else...

Devuan is Debian Jessie, but with fixes to optimize use without systemd.

nonsense. The use of systemd-shim allows for systemd-only applications to work fine.

If I buy a laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled is the hardware going to be 100% compatible with every distro? Is it possible that Gentoo and arch won't have drivers or is any distro usable?
>>
>>59143271
If it runs on Ubuntu, it could have nonfree drivers preinstalled. If your hardware *requires* nonfree (as in freedom) drivers, you may need to install them on that distro.

I'm fairly sure that Arch includes them as a package, and I know for a fact that Gentoo supports the proprietary AMD/nVidea drivers.

Outside of drivers, if the device comes pre-installed with GNU/Linux, you can be fairly certain that it will run fine with most distros.

A program is never really finished. That said, I'd say 4 years to v1.0. Measured by 20 years development and current version number 0.9.

Isn't mint still on 4.2 or something? I stopped using debian when I realised it doesn't even have 4.0 yet

Can someone explain the appeal of slackware? Why would you want no dependency resolution? Is it stable or rolling release? How quickly does it get stuff in composition to arch and Gentoo? Is it source based?
>>

Yay, finally got everything running! Fuck Nvidia though. After editing the configuration .xml file like I was supposed to in order to confuse the GPU, I was still getting driver crashes. Realized I had to disable the Spice/VNC server for it to run. I don't understand why Nvidia drivers hate virtualization so much. The only thing I can think of is security, but still that was a lot of hassle just to get my GPU to do its freaking job. Oh well, hard part's over at least.

I have this line in my i3 config to start nemo with a keybind. It doesn't work for Nemo, but works for other programs. How could I investigate this?

bindysm $mod+f exec nemo
>>
>>59143872

Do you need a firewall (iptables frontend)?
>>
>>59144201
Just a stab in the dark but are you launching i3 with startx instead of a display manager? I had the same problem with many programs refusing to launch. The solution is either install a DM like lightdm and a greeter, or alternatively instead of exec Nemo, use "exec dbus-launch nemo"
>>
>>59144227

I'm lunching i3 with a display manager (LightDM). Every program works, except for Nemo.
I can start Nemo fine from the shell/terminal emulator. When I hit the key combo from i3, it doesn't even register it as a keycombo, it just types my letter in. I tried different combinations that are not MOD+F, but with the same results.
>>
>>59144265
Have you tried binding it to dbus-launch Nemo?
>>
>>59144303

Yes, same results.
This is weird. I don't know what's so special about nemo that it doesn't even register it as a key-combo.
>>
>>59144310
>>59144201

nvm fixed
Strange, now it's working. I didn't even do anything special (didn't log out or reload the config).

gentoo

>>

Ignore this guy, >>59144775 it's a terrible choice for a noob and compiling will take fucking forever.
Most desktop environments will be unusably laggy. Your choices are lxde, xfce (look up screenshots and pick one)
If you don't mind not having a desktop, a window manager like i3 or openbox is much lighter. (Basically, it's a wallpaper and a status bar, you use a launcher to launch programs and then move windows around)

That said, for distro I'd recommend a Ubuntu or debian based one. Xubuntu and Lubuntu are both pretty lightweight and come with the DEs I suggested. They tend to just work, and have a huge (if slightly retarded) community and solid, stable packages.

Arch can be good because it's a very minimal install but can be confusing for beginners. It also doesn't come with a DE so you could use a window manager. If you do try to use it, I'd use the arch anywhere installer.
>>
>>59144823

Thanks for the info.

Xubuntu and Lubuntu were the two I had read had the smallest footprints without being difficult for new users to pick up, but I figured I'd ask first to see if there were any I missed.

This system supports 2GB of RAM, ideally I'd bump it up and grab a cheap SSD but I don't know if I want to spend any money on upgrading this hardware.
>>
>>59144891
Ubuntu flavours are a very easy to install and simple start that should just work on a lot of hardware, even though arch and Gentoo users here will shit on them. I wouldn't bother upgrading that pos. If you live in the USA, I'd recommend getting a cheap ThinkPad. For under $200 you can get great hardware that's easy to upgrade and a great build. Ask at /tpg/ if you're interested.
>>
>>59143792
I haven't used it myself but apparently it's much like gentoo. A bit of work to get setup, but once you have things scripted just the way you like them it's easy to maintain. The rest is all blah blah muh custom tailored system no bloat nonsense.
>>
For maintaining an arch install so that it rarely has problems when updating, how often should I update? Every day or once every few weeks?

Now my second monitor (tv) is a blurry mess, both through hdmi and the dvi with hdmi converter.
What do?

Also screentearing which my old gpu didn't have.
I went from AMD 3850 to AMD 260x using the same opensource driver so that should not cause it?

How do I make a Live USB Gentoo persistent?
>>
I installed kolourpaint in kubuntu, but it won't appear when I search in the application launcher, I can launch it normally in the terminal though. What's going on?
>>
>>59148024
if the live distro don't support that by defalt, then you cannot. You have to make a custom distro with overlayfs enabled and configured with a specific filename to store changes in. If you need a live system with persistent changes, check buntus.

I regret formatting my win partition.
Linux is nice when everything works. But often it doesn't.

Do you have your key? I'm not 100% sure but I thought W10 activation was activated to your machine so when reinstalling you should not need a key.

>I'm not 100% sure but I thought W10 activation was activated to your machine so when reinstalling you should not need a key.
Only on UEFI systems, where an OEM windows key is stored in the "BIOS".
>>
>>59148273
when I bought my laptop, it had Win8 installed, then I switched to 8.1. Later I put it into factory default, completely deleting everything and it ran on Win8.
From that I guess that I should be fine, right?

What's a good taskbar and system tray that works in any WM that's similar to the ones included with KDE, LXDE, MATE, XFCE, etc
>>
>>59147446

Remove any Xorg configs in the Xorg config directory. Remove any xrandr scripts you might have somewhere. Restart X.
>>
>>59148146

It didn't come with a .desktop file. Make one yourself and put it in the appropriate folder (locally for just your user or globally for everyone).
>>
>>59148438

Hint: you can use the taskbars included in KDE, LXDE, Mate and Xfce anywhere.
I like Xfce's, because it has many features and plugins, but I dislike it because it wouldn't apply the language translations. LXDE's is similar, but has less plugins.
