Hello friends I am new here
What is a tool watch?

Thank you,
R.H
>>
>>59101195
>Tool watch

It's a watch that is built for a specific purpose - like a dive watch, or military. Their emphasis is practical and less on jewellery.
>>
>>59101259
OK thank you
What makes a military watch a military watch and would dress watches come under that category?
>>
>>59101335
Military watches are generally defined as watches that were built to a military standard (or are at least look like it.)

Various Military watch standards in American history:

GG-W-113
A11
MIL-W-3818A
MIL-W-50717

Dress watches are formal watches usually made of precious metals and minimal adornment. Not similar to military use watches.

No he's right, maybe watches that aren't more expensive don't appeal at all the person. That $400 watch truly is their grail. The best of the best for them.
>>
>>59101814
Grail comes from "the quest for the holy grail". A grail isn't just a watch you want. It's a watch of high value that takes you a long time of saving and suffering to obtain.

I want a seiko alpinist but it's not "grail" I'll be ordering one as soon as I'm paid this month. I didn't have to save or suffer.
>>
>>59101874
How do you know that person didn't have to save for a long time for a $400 watch? Plenty of people think that is a ridiculous amount to spend on a watch/jewelry
>>
>>59101874

A watch can be difficult to obtain without being particularly expensive, especially in the case of vintage watches.

What the watch did you just say about me, with your little wrists? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Patek Haute 'De Horology and I’ve been involved in numerous watchmaking meetings in Geneva! and I have over 300 confirmed NATOs. I am trained in watchmaking and I’m the top strap changer in the entire Seiko factory. You are nothing to me but just another rolex wearer. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my words. You think you can get away with saying that to me over the Internet? Think again, leather wearer. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of watchmakers across Switzerland and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your watch collection. You’re done collecting, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can ban you from any AD in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my phone. I have access to the entire arsenal of the Haute horolgie foundation Geneva and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable collection off the face of the continent, If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. You’re done collecting, Kiddo.

>Japanese watch maker Seiko is teaming up with Tokyo-based retailer Nano Universe to sell a limited run of Chariot series watches. What makes the Chariot so special? Well, it was the minimalist watch design Apple co-founder Steve Jobs sported in a 1984 Norman Seeff potrait that later made the cover of Time Magazine. The photo, featuring Jobs sitting lotus-style in his barebones Woodside, California house with a Macintosh on his lap, has become one of the most iconic shots of Jobs during one of Apple’s most critical periods.

>The original watch owned by Jobs’ estate sold for $42,500 back in February 2016. Now, Seiko is re-releasing it in its original 33mm size and and a slightly larger 37.5mm version. The company is selling 1,982 units with a white face, and another 300 in black. The cost, at ¥20,000, comes in a little less than $180. But the catch — because of course there is a catch here — is that these watches will be exclusive to to the Japanese market.

>>
>>59104499

Outside of maybe some special editions Omega watches don't hold resale value for shit.
>>
>>59104406

Not really. The Chinese ETA copies are a QC nightmare and outside of China only Vostok, Citizen, Seiko, Orient, Sellita, Soprod, ETA, Nomos and Rolex have the technical capability of manufacturing escapements, and therefore complete drop-in movements.

I don't see the business case for another firm to invest the capital necessary to develop the ability to produce ETA clones to reasonable tolerances and QC, unless sits in China with foreign supervision but it would still be a QC nightmare with way too high a reject rate to justify vs just buying Miyota 9015s.

Honestly, all Citizen needs to do to secure the overwhelming majority of the ebauche market is make a version of the 9015 with a micro-adjuster and sell a factory adjusted version. No ETA clone would be able to compete.

Omegas are priced well above the prices the actual manufacturing quality of the watches would justify and sold to those who don't know better using marketing. Their poor resale values accurately reflect them being initial considerably overpriced.

I found a nice way to regulate if you're running fast and don't want to open the back. My watch was running about +10s per day so when i set it in the morning i set it around 5 seconds behind perfect time and now it's only +5s after day 1 will update tomorrow with results

He finds roughly what the other guy did. QC is not up to snuff. The Sea-Gull ETA 2824-2 clone came out of the factory UNOILED and with several other minor issues, and he didn't use a microscope to inspect for dust and dirt.

My Seiko 5s21 is supposed to beat 4 times per second, and at room temperature, it does. However, at skin temperature, it ticks 8 times per second. Any idea what's likely going on here? Is the quartz crystal somehow entering a different vibration mode? Some problem with the IC?
>>
>>59105057
The seagull clone gets the best timegraph results in one of its positions though. -0.6 seconds a day crown down. The real eta doesn't get that low. And it easily meets eta min standards of 30 seconds
>>
>>59105110

Sure, but the level of factory QC to ensure movements are oiled properly and don't have a bunch of dirt and shit in them that will cause excessive wear (and a bad reputation later) is lacking compared to Miyota, Sellita, Soprod or ETA.
>>
I heard oiling movements actually causes friction so it's bad. A jewel bearing works better unoiled or something
>>
Seagull movements not being oiled isn't a conspiracy. The watch maker is supposed to do the oiling and seagull informs the watchmaker of their unoiled nature.

I don't know if I'm being intentionally dense here. But it a chronograph's hands supposed to start dead on 12 o'clock or slightly before?

I've noticed on my mechanical chrono the chrono hand doesn't set to dead on 12 oclock but slightly in front of it. But on all pictures online of the chrono the hand is positioned before 12oclock exactly like mine.

It's not off by much, just 1/6th of a second.
>>
>>59105556
It doesn't seem to actually effect timing because on pressing the start button the hand "jumps" to 12 oclock and then starts timing.

I saw Archieluxery at Rolex Boutique in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, and if he liked my Hamilton Khaki King

But he told me to “Get that shitter watch" out his face and then called me a "fucker".

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Rolexes in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the watches and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent magnetic infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each watch and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by calling her a fucker.

I have a golden eye, it's not on there. That's one of the watches released feb 2015 I ordered when it came out in japan. I LOVE it, I wear it a lot while traveling. Certainly has a very nice bracelet for its price. I've put on 2k+ watches with bracelets that felt worse.

Bottom left is a Sea Raider 10bps watch. The other is a GG-W-113 recreation.

Historically, Rolex's main line of watches were tool watches built to be tough and accurate, not beautiful, and so were the movements in the watches which were only decorated to the extent it was functionally useful to do so.

Today, that history gives Rolex a handy excuse to save manufacturing costs in decorating their movements since they don't do display backs on their sport watches.

Yeah, to clarify, that's what I meant by functional finishing. They just don't do any decorative movement finishing, and justify using muh history muh tool watch. To be honest, I actually really like the purely functional finishing, it's only because of the pricepoint that it annoys me.

Not him but I honestly hate display back cases. It's so tacky and tasteless and I dislike the obsession with it every bit as much as I hate the trend towards XBOX HUEG cases for no reason. I like taking off the back myself and getting a special treat once every few months by just watching the movement for a bit. If I can see it endlessly it ruins the charm.

Thank god Rolex hasn't followed that tacky trend yet.

Any fag can buy a few watches. It takes time, dedication, and style to construct a collection of any horological or other interest as a whole. For how pretentious his attitude is he might as well have a Rolex if he ever wants his collection to match that.
>>
>>59112688
A lot of modern (and vintage) movements are aesthetically pleasing, sometimes without being decorated, it's nice to have one in your collection, even if you mostly prefer solid backs.

Should just consider a new strap/bracelet and keeping the current one on ice.

It was his dead dad's who he used to kill nazis.

Even if you don't like guns how could you want to destroy a family heirloom?

Online I saw some concerns expressed over the ability of the Seiko Spirit Digital to pick up radio sync signals, but I'm happy to report that it has no problem with reception in Southern Ontario after dark.

Girls commented nicely on my friends FAKE submariner even when he told its fake and he (and i) lived in China for several years.

It stained his wrist green from terrible metals.

I hate (love) grills

Heirlooms rarely are and that's not the point. What a faggot that guy is

The way they are presented makes you think they are actually statements given to police by the person in question. They have deliberately worded them to make the person sound as stupid as possible.

Like the "narrowly avoided a fender bender so I shot them" one. The person they shot could have been extremely threatening and violent, it doesn't mention the conduct of the other person in most of them.

Where has the concept of "jobs for life" and companies that care about their employees gone?

It's ruining our culture and preventing people from living their life since they might lose their job at any moment.
>>
>>59114602
People don't even want jobs for life. They don't even want career for life because they often change skills and go do something completely different.

The best troll I have seen insist on shilling Prologue brand watches. Its the shit you get from Clas Ohlson (nordic chain of cheap literally everyhing you cant eat)

For 15€ you get a watch that is good value and can take a visit to the sauna!

Buy one for your husbands 50th birthday! Anniversary!

Its been going on for years on finnish watch boards

Of course this kind of shit is done in san francisco.

This shit is done all over. I remember reading multiple incidents about women who brought their grandfathers Sturmgewehr assault rifles worth about $30,000 to a gun buyback to be melted in exchange for $100 walmart giftcards.

Fuck I personally have a MINT Kar98k vet bring back with papers and original bayonet that someone's grandfather got from the Battle of the Bulge that then was clearly pawned off to a gunshop for chump change before I got it.

I mean it's better that someone like me has it than what was probably (and pretty much always is) some strong, independent womyn who needs cash to pay off her salon bills this month.

Well the gun buybacks is a little different than "lets melt the guns down to make /art!/ We're sooo clever," which is so typical in the bay.

But yeah, I get your point.

I don't want to do the same job my whole life. Nobody does.
Companies fuck you over any chance they get, no matter how good you've been with them, so any sense of loyalty is gone.
>>
>>59111767
It's arguably better than spending that kind of money on a car or boat since watches will hold their value much better, and even gain value in some cases.
It's not an investment, but it's not really a liability either. Maybe. I might be wrong.
