Rubber is pretty cool, looks very casual of course. I have a bright orange Isofrane lookalike on my Ray.
Just came back from a week in Iceland with it, it was great. I love being in vacation because I can get away with anything watch-wise. I wouldn't wear an orange strap day to day.

I was looking at some of their straps earlier, I think the black leather NATO with PVD hardware (pic related) would be the best fit from their offerings, I didn't see anything with the right amount of blue in it.

I'm trying to talk myself into buying something like this for my $9 meme watch:

Yeah, but I'm trying to get something fancy. I tried this Lord Matic, a Citizen Leopard and some electrics, but so far all ran away from me.
>>
>>59112812
Again, any fag can buy a watch. Owning 2-3 is not impressive. A watch's individual significance is the manufacturer's achievement, not yours. Simply put, if your collection is merely worth the sum of the parts you have nothing to be smug over because it will be dismantled by your family the moment you're hit by a train.
>>
>>59119247
So I jumped on chrono24 to see what I could see, check this out.

http://www.chrono24.com/omega/geneve--id3981544.htm

(I do not know anything about this model and can not attest to if it is true to the original or if it has replacement parts, I also can't vouch for the seller)

It's not as formal as a two hander with no date or minute markers like this >>59119034

But easily still would work in most formal situations (at least the type you'd wear a normal business suit to.)
>>
How's kinda recent 1963 anon doing

Still working and holding at +15 seconds per day. Wondering if it will come down as the watch is broken in. If not I'll have it regulated. Watch is seriously beautiful in the light. The dial is a metallic golden flake colour. The blued hands shine and so do the gold indacies.

One thing that I didn't mention before not sure if you know this already. You won't find a serial number or seagull logo on the watch. Except for "tianjin watch factory" on the dial and case back in Chinese.

This could be an attempt to stay true to the original as seagull has only existed since 1992.

However the theory on watchuseek is these are essentially a microbrand watch made by a man named thomas in Hong Kong. He used to be a high up manager in seagull but has now started his own watch company. Most people get their watches by emailing Thomas.

Seagull pulled the watch from their lineup years ago but somehow new ones are ring made...

I knew all this before buying.

As a hobby? Debateably. Like you said, tools are expensive, and it requires a lot of patience and learning to do it right. To start, find an old beat up pocketwatch with an intact movement. If you ruin it, whatever. Get a cheap WATCHMAKERS screwdriver set (hardware stores dont have anything small enough) a case knife, and a loupe. Try taking it apart and putting it back together, see what you think. That should cost you maybe a little over 100 bucks if you shop right.

Career wise? Sure. The world is running out of watchmakers and theyre becoming more in demand as older ones retire. You could probably get a good job for a good company easy. But, opening a business is going to be harder. Manufacturers are clamping down on parts and tool accounts because they make more money when they come into the factory for service.
>>
>>59119731
I got mine from watchunique in the netherlands but they just get them from Thomas.

Buying from Thomas allows more choice he makes lots of different versions but I always wanted the 38mm acrylic as it's more true to the original. He also makes 42mm. Sapphire crystal. Different dial colours. Some people fined the Chinese red star offensive so you can get wit different logo.
>>
>>59119859
It's more to save costs on servicing the same reason I change my car oil myself
>>
>>59119751
Are there any affordable, or better yet poorfag microrotors? Do the Japanese do microrotors at all?
>>
>>59119949
Thing with car oil, the manufacturer doesn't stop you buying it.
>>
>>59119974
Look for vintage Universal Geneve polerouters. Those movements did get used by other manufacturers as well.
>>
>>59119949
Ehhh. Then i would just take it to a good shop. A good watch should only have to be serviced every five years, really good ones can go a little over a decade.

Doing it yourself requires a lot of intensive technical know-how. You run the risk of really fucking something up if youre not careful and untrained.

If you have the passion for it and are willing to spend a few YEARS learning the ins and outs, hell yeah.

But if youre just trying to save money, like you said, no. The cost of the tools, the risk of having to replace your watch, and the time commitment dont add up.

Watchunique offer a 1 year warranty. Some people have has issues while others have not. There was a big thread on watchuseek a few years back where they took a guys watch and he had to wait months for a refund. But far more people have posted about them honouring the warranty. You have no manufacturers warranty.

Thomas also offeres a one year warranty however you'll need to ship it all the way back to China and he'll repair it. Watchunique just refunds or sends another.

>>59120536
I've found it for $52
>>
>>59120565
Oh yeah, its good stuff. They use good materials and have great qc.

The alpha movement isnt anything groundbreaking, but its solid, and nicely finished. I believe the newest one was designed from the ground up.

Overall its very good for the money; 2000 bucks for an in-house movement, Made in Germany, a country with a high standard of manufaturing.

The only problem is that theyre not major players like Rolex or whatever, so resale wont be that great if you want to flip it for something else.

I assume youre male? Go with the 38mm no date.

>$200

So we've established it's probably not worth me learning how to service watches to save money.

But what about learning how to regulate? How badly can you fuck that up?
>>
>Whenever a watch company does a presentation of showing how their watch is assembled it's always some qt girl.

So are these actors or what? Since when are women into watches enough to even know what brands are good? Let alone become a watch maker.
>>
>>59121524
Assuming you don't accidentally poke your finger in and fuck up the hairspring it's pretty safe. If you buy a cheap chinese watch or seiko 5 or vostok you might get some benefit from it, and it's fun. But they can only be so accurate.
>>
>>59121559
I guess the first step is to buy a timegrapher
>>
>>59121544
Women have very good up close visual acuity and often naturally gravitate towards that kind of work. I would think it shouldn't be too surprising that they would assemble watches. As far as I can tell, watch manufacturers employ a lot of women to do that kind of work.

What would be more surprising is to see them engineering watches, and dealing with somewhat abstract concepts like material properties to design a new escapement. Not as many women in that kind of thing.
>>
>>59121622
So where are they finding these women? I've never met a single woman that cared about watches.

Surely to become a watch maker you'd have to go to some kind of watch making school?

I just find it very odd that a young girl would leave school and go "Hey I'm going to become a watch maker". It's just so out of character for most girls. They tend to go to college to do shit like nursing, admin or child care.

I watched some watchmaking doc on YouTube. A lot of the engravers were women.

And not just bullshit like "to richard, love sally," complicated movement decoration, one week on a single small part.

Most of the mechanical work was done by guys.

Watchmaking is definitely more of a male thing, but their are a suprising amount of women in the field, considering that watches seem to be something women dont give a shit about.
>>
>>59121680
Serious answer:

Looking at the website they offer 3 different versions:

The first is mineral glass so it's understandable it's more expensive.

Second is sapphire crystal and 42mm so again it's understandable.

Looking at the 38mm Acrylic one it looks like the original limited run that Seagull produced years ago and not one of Thomas's watches. There is a seagull logo on the crown and it's a 19 jeweled version and not the later 21 jewled version.

So perhaps Longislandwatch believe you should pay more for an "official" seagull one.
>>
>>59121807
And when you say "so much cheaper" I don't really understand.

I paid £192 for my Seagull 1963 from Watch Unique and Longisland are selling for £239. It's not that much of a difference.
>>
>>59121807
So you're paying more for less jewels? Hmm. I wonder if it's worth the official one

There's very little difference in them. Thomas seemed to have something to do with their production when he was still working at Seagull as he was being used as a contact for people wanting to buy one as Seagull pulled it from their official webstore. So it might have been a side project for him while at the company.

When he went off to start producing his own watches he must have bought the rights to the design and the tooling, he just lost the rights to put the seagull logo on the crown.

Does $4000 justify a GS, for example re movement/casing/finish?

I've heard many different responses from Rolex/GS/even Patek owners regarding luxury vs. today's affordables.

That is a stunning watch, there's no denying it.

Good, reliable, nice decorated movement and accurate when it comes from Tianjin Seagull.

Basically, Beijing and Seagull are the best
watch manufacturers in China, in terms of
quality. And their in-house movements also
lends a different flavour from the Japs,
Germans and the Swiss.

The 1963 has been extensively reviewed online and on forums. So I don't think you will get a case of buyer's remorse.

There is not really a developed market for resale tho for Chinese watches. Take that into account.

For a wealthy person like lawyeranon this is no problem, but for regular folks, a service cost at FP Journe will reach gang rape levels and you won't be able to avoid it; think 1.5-2k approx for a simple service, no repairs involved.

>56xx

Avoid unless it's a King Seiko version with no day or date, since the quickset mechanism for the day/date has a plastic gear that shrinks and cracks due to age, menacing eventually the quick set will break on all of them.

>45xx

Vintage prices have already gotten pretty expensive for these relative to 52xxs. The movement is prone to excessive wear and needs frequent servicing, these are not cheap to own, but the inherent accuracy of these movements is outstanding.

>52xx

The Seiko 52xx is one of the four great series production automatic movements developed in the 1970s along with the ETA 2892-A2, the Omega 56x/75x and the Rolex 3035. It's a clear step beyond the 56xx and doesn't have the excessive wear issues of the 45xx.

The 52 King Seiko Special models in particular were factory adjusted to a much higher standard than what they were supposed to be on paper as Daini Seikosha saw them as their last chance to leave a statement for posterity.

They are also cheap to maintain because donor LM Specials for parts are cheaply and widely available.

The movement is so good that Seiko resurrected it in the 1990s as the 4s15 family, now exclusively used in high end Credor models.

They Veyron is engineering wank for rich people.

It has no fucking use whatsoever.

If the Veyron is so great riddle me this? Which racing teams are running one at Le Mans?

How many podium finishes does it have?

That;s right non because it's a pigfat abomination that burns it's tyres out and runs out of fuel after 10 minutes of holding it's top speed.

It's slower around the Nürburgring than a Nissan GTR
>>

Not the veyron because it takes several minutes of perfectly straight or only very slightly curved road to reach it's top speed.
