Cringe marketing aside, Discord is simply the best at what it does if you don't care about botnet issues. You can hate it all you want but why did it take so long for someone to make something where anyone can sign up in 5 seconds, download a small/easy app on any platform or even use the browser, and have instant voice calls/group chat/text message boards/private messages.

Sure tech savvy people can set up custom private IRC servers, mumble servers, etc. but chatting by nature requires other people to use it (wide adoption) and you know damn well no one is going do all that shit just to chat. And even if they do, it's still doesn't have stuff that Discord has like link/image previews and drag+drop, emotes (yes, normies need these or they won't use your shit), etc.

Really, where? Was it all in one easy to use package? I realize you can achieve the same thing with open source software, and tons of customization/autism, but remember normies need something easy and accessible. And chat/voice software is the one thing where you MUST cater to normies, because the whole point of the software is to communicate with others which you won't be doing if no one else is using the platform.

Skype was missing the whole forum/message board-esque server system that Discord has. Not to mention the whole ability to have bots and stuff Discord servers. If you're only about the voice chat/group chat features then yea Skype had it, but it also had tons of ads all over the place and MS is an even worse botnet then whatever Discord is.

skype was a cluster fuck, especially if you talked with someone a long ways away.

Then skype locked my account automatically, and got thrown around from person to person for a good week before I was told 'There is nothing we can do, you have to make a new skype account' and I told the person to go fuck themselves.

Me and a friend were looking for a new chat program to use for games anyway, and discord checked every single box we used, easy to use, if program breaks, we can use the online version, and we can invite randoms to the server for groups, shit works good for that purpose FAR more than skype where we would have to deal with them for longer than just the length of the game.

There is no practice, there is no learning, you are expected to be an expert and if you aren't banned. fuck the entirety of irc and its culture, it can rot for all I care, nothing useful is handled exclusively through irc anymore thank fucking god.

People who use Discord are all childish and annoying. People who refuse to use Discord are all autistic and have major personality flaws. nah, back in the day the only way to get shit was through irc, but every single irc set up their own rule set for what can and cant be said to get a file list, or even if you can get a file list.

Shit was trial by fire where you say the wrong command you are banned, the only places that have survived are either user friendly in how they handle irc, or moved to torrents/dedicated web hosting instead of irc.

I genuinely pity you if you can't acknowledge the positive aspects of Discord. If it's not your favorite, that's fine. But if you think there are no merits to it and that it's terrible, I think you suffer from genuine delusions.

Easily the best VOIP+chat software I've ever installed, leagues ahead of Skype, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, and Curse.

discord is easy to use, it has voice chat, text channels, file transfer, PMs/DMs, separate "guilds"(basically servers),
it has a desktop app, web version, mobile app and a robust and easy to use bot API for writing your own bots in almost any language...

it's basically IRC but way better and easier to use with way more features

sure you can't host your own but who cares? you can just create a "guild" or whatever it is and send an invite to your pals.

I've been in control of two ts servers over the years, one being for a clan I used to co-lead which was a 250 slot, and a much smaller one for myself and my irl friends.

The clan ts had a constant rotation of guests, members, and officers (moderator was only given to people who had been an officer for a minimum of 6 months, so the actual administrative and moderation staff underwent changes very infrequently). The tools that I needed in ts were always easily accessible, and could be easily tuned if need be. Permissions were also super simple to understand and setup. Banning people from specific areas of the server was a great ability too, and kept some of the younger, more volatile members of the community in their respective rabbit holes. all of these sorts of tasks were even simpler to do on a smaller, more tight knit group of people on the smaller ts

So, after using ts almost daily since 2010, why did I switch to discord?

Accessibility.

You would not believe the amount of people who would straight up avoid ts because "it doesn't sound as good as x" or "it looks too confusing, I don't know how to use it" types of reasons. Especially around 2014 when the ts design, while I know it inside and out, It really began to show it's age. If you're a function over form kind of person, like most hardcore ts3 users are, you have most likely already made up your mind, so I'm not going to try and make you change.

But I can do everything I want to on discord that I was able to do with ts3, whether it's for 10 users or 100 users. Also, things like bots are so much easier to get working on discord, so if that;'s a feature your group of people might like, then it might be something to toy around with.

And I guess at this point it's just down to the little things, like being able to see the image previews and shit. If you're dug in on this issue, then nothing will change your opinion, but Discord has definitely lived up to my expectations.
>>
Also one more thing, It should be said that I am concerned with Discord's ability to monetize and continue providing the service they have been so far. Nitro doesnt look to be worth it at all, unless having cross-server emojis and a gif avatar is worth it. Nobody I've talked to had shown any interest in it whatsoever, so they better come up with something or who knows where we'll be in a few years.
>>
Can someone recomend me good Discord groups? Thank you guys.

I'd like someone to ellaborate on the "selling data" part. What exactly are they selling? The only thing they have on me is an email address.I haven't connected any other of my accounts and the chat is just filled with shitty memes.
I don't try to pull the "I have nothing to hide card" as i understand the meaning of privacy, but the whole selling data part seems a bit vague.Do they sell recorded conversation or permanently stored chat logs? Or they just send anonymous data about what games i play and shit like that.
In my opinion people that say discord hasn't been monetized yet are right. The main requirement for a service like this to be successfull is being used by a lot of people. You can make the best chat software but without a userbase it's fucked. They have a userbase and now they will start monetizing it.Let's hope it won't turn to shit.
