Ah, so I should connect it to Windows, install drivers, then try connecting it to my laptop again? My laptop appears to have 4.0 (besides spec sheet):

Audio myths that need to go:

>Headphone form factor alters the soundstage
"Open back headphones have better/larger soundstage"

>Soundstage is an important parameter
"Open back is the best for gaming because of the soundstage"
"You want good soundstage for classical music"

>Frequency response for a genre
"Bassy response is great for EDM and rap"
"Grados are the best for rock"

>Working and competent amplifiers audibly distort/color the sound
"Tube amplifiers are warm sounding [because of they distort]"
"Solid state is analytical"

>Amplifier operation classes make them sound inherently different
"Class A is the purest and highest fidelity"
"Class D amplifiers are noisy"

>DA-converter topology carries a specific audible impact or benefit
"Multibit has better detail and soundstage than delta-sigma"

>Some transducer types are better than the others or carry inherent properties in how they sound
"Electrostatics are fast and clean"
"Planar magnetics have great bass"

>EQ hurts fidelity
"Equalization adds distortion"

>Lossy files are audibly different or worse than lossless
"MP3 sounds horrible"

>High resolution formats sound different/better compared to Redbook
"DSD sounds analog"

>Headphones, amplifiers or DA-converters are important in compression artifact audibility
"You can't hear the difference because your gear doesn't resolve enough detail"
"Using streaming services with HD 800 is going to sound bad"

>Wireless data transmission inherently and audibly alters or hurts the sound quality
"Wireless headphones are not audiophile"

>High impedance is hard to drive
"You need an amplifier for those HD 600s"
"Above 100 ohm you need an amplifier"

Now what did I miss?

>cables
I figured this would be obvious but I guess it deserves its place there as you keep seeing the same bullshit online and cable vendors selling their snake oil are still alive.

>Cable conductor material has sound properties
"Gold cables sound warm"
"Silver is more detailed and transparent"

>Balanced audio gear have sound properties
"Balanced DACs have better instrument separation"
"Balanced amplifiers have better driver control and can drive headphones to their fullest potential"

>Sighted listening is a reliable way to establish claims about sound quality
"The reviewer said they had excellent detail retrieval and PRaT"
"This amplifier has some warmth to it. I know because I own it"
"The detail retrieval has significantly improved with this DAC"

I remembered a few others:

>Exclusive sound APIs or output modes have audible benefits
"ASIO and WASAPI have higher sound quality than DirectSound"
"Kernel streaming has the best detail"

>Damping factor relates to bass response and driver control
"The bass is muddy and congested because of the low damping factor"

>Amplifiers specifically alter low end response
"Smartphone just doesn't have enough juice to bring out the bass"

Maybe things about square waves and impedance, too?

>And preferably some citations to the contrary if you're trying to educate people.

Something like this:

SBAF is of course a goldmine for quotes on "speed"
"Faster more delineated treble."

"Treble was fast, refined and exquisite."

Zeos also made a review talking about how fast the Stax bass is (and how they're not headphones but "earspeakers"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l0EtAF_lEk

>Maybe things about square waves and impedance, too?
Square waves just show the same thing as the frequency response, so they aren't totally garbage as long as you don't pretend they show something else. You already covered the "higher impedance = harder to drive" meme in your previous post, but feel free to go on.

>This could work as audio myths FAQ with those added.

I'm just looking for advice on some generally decent IEMs that will be good for blocking out as much noise as possible. in a nutshell, the multiple "bits" are supposed to preserve original samples found in audio files. this are the same "bits" you hear about with 16 bit FLAC files. the idea is that the audio isn't simplified the way "normal" dacs do. however, there is little actual evidence beyond placebo that this sample preservation is noticeable at all.

Not even close. HD600 wipes the floor with HE400i. They're not even in the same category IMO. You have to go way up in the HiFiman's line, say HE6, to beat HD600's. I know that sounds crazy but it's true. Just look at the graphs to dispel your biases.

Graphs don't lie bro. And hundreds of comparisons on Goldenears and the like go against you.

About the only planar headphones that I've tried and liked were Audeeze. HiFiman line is grossly overpriced and overrated. Planars always have a loose/muddy bass which always bothered me.

If you have cash to burn, go for electrostatics. You get a bit more performance but you better have golden ears or be under 18 to actually be able to hear differences.

A note for HD600 users.
After 4 years of 10h a day, everyday wearing of them I literally got my skull bent in on top. Don't do it, shit hurts.
Put something in-between the headband and your head to spread the pressure.
>>
>>59041158
>Which wins in terms of sound you think?
It's really up to personal preference: unless you try them, you can't really know; if you're not a fanatic with very refined taste in frequency responses it's likely you'll end up enjoying all of them roughly the same, which is why you have to use other parameters to guide your choice.

Personally I wouldn't buy the CB-1, since the build quality is clearly shit, and the internet is full of QA issues, but I've included them because they're cheaper and your budget might not cover the M40x and pads combo (which would be the direct competitor).

>Square waves just show the same thing as the frequency response
There is no purpose to using a square wave generator when you have a computer and FFT analyzer (and appropriate ADC) to compute more information better, and more clearly. Square waves only show less.
It might appear similar to the DFT as a discretization of the continuous spectrum, but the square wave discards even multiples, inverts sign of every other harmonic, and attenuate the amplitude of higher frequency "sampling" points.

>minimum phase devices
Its phase response would be uniquely related to the magnitude of the frequency by Hilbert transform. An explanation Sean Olive recently mangled, but he may have neglected some bits for brevity. Everyone trips over their words once in a while.
A rough way (until I think of a better one) to consider minimum phase behavior is to say that there is one resonance that has most of its energy clustered right near the envelope peak. The oscillation undergoes steady exponential decay, without secondary reverberation or delayed ports.

As to whether devices really do operate in the minimum phase:
-Ports will not be in the same phase
-Same for multiple drivers and crossovers
-Room echoes
-Low frequency leakage effects (earpad or elsewhere) introduces some allpass

Ports are common with closed back and in-ear headphones. Leakage is the norm, multiple drive units are fashionable for in-ears.
It's still a fair approximation for a single driver headphone, min phase will generally dominate.

>not showing any additional information
There are often multiple useful graphs that show the same information.
The utility is to rearrange the presentation so that a new, useful interpretation may result, highlighting interesting features better.
Everything linear can be characterized by the impulse or the frequency response, but would you really want to look only at the IR to determine the tonality of a headphone?

>CSDs stuff
Multiple problems before perception, several can be associated with uncertainty principle. Did I ever say why I thought Goldenears CSDs were ill conceived?
You have to give up high time or frequency resolution when doing time-frequency analysis. I said this before, using a collection of tuned filters as a simple example. Some other issues can include windowing and bin leakage, and the general problem of features not being clearly distinct from min phase.

Don't want to type more.

The response of the MDR-1000X is bad imo. It's boomy and thumpy, sounds thick. There's a notable lack of clarity due to notched out upper midrange and the boosted mid bass.

QC35 is bassy. It's too bassy for my taste but the response is free of any glaring issues and it's smooth across the more critical audio band.

These hold true if you run them in active mode. Without the active circuitry they are both terrible headphones as far as sound quality goes. Pic related is Sony and here's QC35:

Like the SHP's, just looking to upgrade from them.

Been looking at the X2's which I like for the detachable cable, but I don't want too extreme of a V sound.

The 598's are intriguing as well, but I hate the dry sound from the HD280's and not sure if the 598's are enough of a departure from that sound.

If your music isn't lossless, is there any reason to buy an amp/dac and headphones over $100?
>>

On eGlobalCentral, the K712 is $230 USD+FS
>>

Thanks, X2's are the favorites right now it looks since they're easy to drive.

Seems like the DT's have a better chance to sound harsh which I'm not about.

None I can think of, just shitty ones that came with previous mp3 players.

Also, I'd like one that has a good sound for a variety of music genres, as I don't limit myself to one genre.

I wouldn't trust those sites, that one seems to be based in HK. I'd rather just find one of similar price on eBay, where requesting/making a return/refund (if needed) is probably a lot easier.

Oops, meant to finish off my sentence with 'runs off of my phone and tablet to ear bleeding levels, with no noticeable sonic difference (to my ears), compared to using an amp.

I have a first gen X1 that I use for work, has yet to give me a problem with anything, including the 8000+ files I have loaded on it.

Can't comment on the others though, as I've never owned any of them.

Define what level of lossy audio it is. IMO, 320 kbps and V0 sounds just as good as FLAC from most sources I've heard, even $800+ ones. 128 kbps and below to some 192 kbps, on the other hand, sounds tinny and veiled My opinion could be taken with a grain of salt though, as I'm 31 and have moderate hearing loss.

The majority of my music is in 320.
I was wise enough to know that higher kbps is better, but too foolish to just get flac or wav files.

Just wondering if an amp will significantly improve the sound when it comes to mp3/lossy formats or 320 files?

Not much you can get for 220 USD with the crazy dollar prize.
Since you didn't mention sound signature I'm going to guess you don't care. I got a pair of AKG K550s on Amazon for 2200 pesos a little bit over a year ago. They're fucking amazing.
Also a pair of Momenmtum 2 Over Ear for 4500 pesos during el buen fin last year.
Your best bet is to lurk Amazon and Mercadolibre regularly and wait for a sale or you'll end up buying garbage if you pay full MSRP.
>>
>>59053031
Why? Compare them to the m50x

Just checked Amazon Mexico. The Momentum 2 for Apple devices are on sale for 4700 pesos. That's pretty good and a solid pair you will definitely enjoy.
I got them slightly cheaper and could pick Apple or Android remote controls but if you want them now that's a great choice.
>>
>>59052740
the m40x is similar to the m50x but has less bass & isn't shit

if you want something bassy, get xpt100/hm5, they're AROUND the same budget but better

if you don't want bassy, why were you considering m50x in the first place? Because of the reddit memes or some shit?

If you're looking for something that is V shaped, DT 770's might be a better option for home use. Do they sound better? I can't tell you, that's subjective. They are way more comfy though.
For on the road, go for the m50x's.

If you want something more flat go with m40x.
>>
>>59053230
Not much. Wouldn't recommend it if you already own M40x.
>>
>>59053341
Bloated bass, painful highs are the generally cited reasons.
>>

For vidya, M50's have NO soundstage. Theyre not bad for music but not great. For portability, they're a decent niche choice. DT770 80 Ohm would be a better headphone overall if you want a V-Shape.

Sennheiser HD 202, moved on to a Sony Gold Wireless Headset (I found them to be good, but the build is cheap as fuck)

I've been considering the Sennheiser 558 HD, Beyerdynamic DT 440 and Creative Sound BlasterX H5. Someone said DT 440 > 598s, but I can't find any other claims to validate that information. A review also claimed the SoundBlasterX H5 to be on par with 558 HD, though there's a lack of direct comparison with the HyperX Cloud II.

What would be a closed, neutral upgrade from the M40's in the $200-250 range?

HM5's, MDR's or something similar seem more like a lateral move and the 770's aren't neutral.
>>
>>59053341
They are not shit, they used to be /g/'s god tier headphone. Its just that the price has since been increased and now they are out of the best bang for your buck range. Then a Youtuber came around and started hating on them and reddit started liking them and because of that /g/ hates them now. Still a good set of cans though.

>>
>>59054054
V shape revers to frequency response. Look at it like on a graphic equalizer. Boosted lows, recessed mids and boosted highs. it forms a V or U shape. Its a shape that's generally considered "FUN" to listen to while a flat shape is more accurate and analytical.

On personal preference.
Of course it is, everything is. DT770's are generally considered more comfy and a better bang for the buck though.

On IEM's
I recently bought SoundMagic e10's. Could not be more happy. They are also v shaped.
>>
>>59054187
Based on my experience with the HD558's, no they do not gain from an amp, Depending on the onboard DAC on your laptop you might gain a little, though I highly doubt its worth cost and the hassle.

There are headphone sound demos on youtube. and on soundcloud. Though you only hear a slight difference when compared to other headphones that are demoed. currently have pic related. theyre ok, they work just fine, but the battery life sucks and the fake leather on the ear cups is falling apart. would be willing to spend around $120.

i wouldnt really be using them to listen to music, just watch tv late at night without making too much noise.

It's roughly the same. HE400S are a bit weaker in the upper mids, but have better bass extension (with a proper seal) and don't have a bass hump that blends into the mids like HD600/650 do.

On my experience on HD598, an amp makes a huge difference, but any amp does.

I use a fulla2 but other options should be fine.

>But what do you guys tend to recommend to regular people in the way of desktop dacs/amps?

$100 dollar go for fulla2 (schiit usb amp+dac). That's schiit best value for the money device and all you'll ever need unless you go and buy some extremely power hungry cans which will probably cost thousands anyway and so it won't matter.
