I want to buy a pair of good cans as a gift and those fuckers were my first choice. Too bad here in Europistan they cost more than double amazon.com's price, and importing them from abroad will take too much time.

I need something on that price range equally well built and well sounding.

Just picked up the 598s on Amazon is this good? I was considering others like dt880 and hd600 but went with the 598 since I was blown away by the 558 pic related after 3 years dog finally got to them :(
>>
>>58957967
Well, I guess if you really loved the 558's you made the right choice. Personally I would have gone with something else, as they're practically the same exact headphone (they have the same driver)

But, I mean if you loved the 558s, you can't really go wrong.

Are there any choices other than Apple's?
>>
>>58958051
I don't know actually. I currently own the 558s. I think whenever I get new headphones next time, I might pick something a little more "colored" maybe the Fidelio x2's or something.

Problem is, after owning these, I don't think I wanna go back to round cups ever again. You really can't beat over-ear cups, I can wear these literally all day and there is zero fatigue whatsoever.
>>
>>58957967
HD598 are very good, yeah. That's my main pair.

I do strongly have to emphatise they benefit a lot from having an amp. After two years without an amp, someone lent me a schiit fulla2 and I was blown away. You're seeing just little hints of what the headphones can do when using them without an amp.

Turtle Beach Ear Force X12

I was a teenager and fell for the gaming marketing like 5 years ago. They are good but overpriced. Decent sound (very subjetive considering I've never used quality headphones), good isolation, comfy (I have quite small ears), long ass cable, good microphone.
>>
>>58958259
Is it really that drastic? Cause they're driven very easily from my experience. What changes with an amp?
>>
>>58958263
>50€ max

Very difficult to get something "full sized" at that price.

I'd say the entry point is HD598, which *sometimes* you can get at 100€ on amazon sales. See price history/set an alarm.

They're open, which typically sounds considerably better than closed for the same price.

Tel me about FOSTEX /hpg/. How good are they? Does anyone have a pair? Are they good value?
>>
>>58958294

Keep in mind this is considering I've used many computers and soundcards as sources before trying the fulla2, so it isn't the case of one faulty source. Also keep in mind that testing is with reasonable volume, so it's not a matter of "I can make it louder now". From a fulla2 perspective, that's just playing with 1/4th (quiet, comfortable for long listening) to half (somewhat loud) of the volume wheel.

Hearing them with the fulla2 for the first time made me go O_O, as if there had been a fog all along, clouding what I could hear through the headphones.

Every song I tested sounded better. Songs I never cared about like chihaya's aoi tori suddenly became very grabbing and generally awesome.

Ended up purchasing the schiit stack (which sounds the same), as I had to return fulla2 to its owner. My advice now is to just get a fulla2; it's much, much better value for the money in terms of general usefulness than the stack.

I think the CAL's are excellent for portable use, but mine are starting to develop a slight short. So I figured I should look into a replacement.

May just replace the CAL or try to fix, thought I'd see what's out there first.

The Takstar HD2000 look intriguing, however there's almost no information about out there and a 6m cable might be too long for portable use.

Zeos is great for two things:
>sorting out what you might want to buy
>convincing yourself to actually spend the money
This works great if you already want to buy a pair of headphones and you have a rough idea on the budget. Otherwise if you're an audiophool, or someone that just likes to watch reviews online for entertainment, then yes, he's a massive faggot that shills everything within his reach; everything he listens to is great, is the best, no amount of money seem to be unreasonable enough to discourage someone from buying a product. Again, because of this, if you're uncertain about purchasing or not, if you want just a little nudge towards the checkout at amazon, or wherever, then zreviews is great.
>>
>>58960859
pinnacle P1 and shure se215 seem to have similar cabling, maybe even same plugins.

It would be too bulky. TS plugs aren't really suited to this sort of use either, no locking mechanisms and prone to occasional shorts.

MMCX has been plucked from RF use as a common connector for earpieces. The more popular options are MMCX and the JH/UE style 2-pin connector.

Wasn't satisfied with the sound, the bass wasn't bassy enough and just sounded all around flat.

Probably not huge if you're not listening to lossless files, and depending on which genres you normally listen to. Most electronic and rock won't really take advantage of the capabilities of higher-end headphones, while Classical and the like will really benefit from it. If you really want to find out, you could find a place with a good return/trial policy and try out and compare some models that interest you.

I listen almost exclusively to trance in 320 or better. What sound signature should I look for in recreation headphones? I wont use them for anything but listening to music, well voip and shit but that's not important.

Trance has all the frequencies, usually tons of bass but then the vocals go really high. All of my favorite songs have female vocalists.

I'm thinking maybe the NAD VISO hp50
Budget is 300, if I were going to go higher I would just get the Oppo Pm-3. I'm in the US. Pretty indifferent to open or closed, scared of having no bass with open headphones but that fear is probably unfounded

>>
>>58965815
>>58965939
You'd probably want a sound signature that's along a slight v-shape, or neutral with a slight boost in the low end.

Look into the X2 if you want to try an open headphone with a nice amount of bass. There's also a peak around 10khz which will make songs sound a bit more energetic.
>>
>>58964200
>SE535 and Red LTD
You can swap the dampers yourself. Order the Knowles grey dampers from a large electronic supplier or some Chinese shop and put them in. I don't suggest paying a significant premium for the 535 LTD.
I'd also suggest that you keep the sound in mind: it's not bad at being dark, smooth low/mid, but you may not want a dark sounding IEM.
There should be one poster here who made the damper swap and held onto it.

>>58965815
>What sound signature should I look for in recreation headphones?
Genre itself doesn't influence the choice of sound signature too much, aside from maybe throwing out the headphones that totally lack extension. Too much variation in style, especially for "trance" which has countless sub-genre, each artist with their own style and coloration.
On that note, listening to lossy or lossless coded music doesn't much influence the headphone choice either.

>past headphones
More important is what general signature you want. What did you think of your other headphones?
>>

I enjoyed the ath-m50 for a while as I had simply never tried anything better. I bought them back in 2009 and my taste in music then was far different. Recently comparing them to my XBA-h1 they were extremely similar and I definitely don't want to pick up something that could be called similar to the m50.

When I purchased my DT-990s I was completely blown away by them. Everything about them was superior to the m50 for me. I'm not good with audio adjectives but I believe I liked the "sparkle" and the way the vocalists sound like they're singing directly into your ear. The vocals always sound like they are in front of everything else and I liked that. I don't have the dt990s anymore so now I figure I may as well buy an upgrade.

I use the takstar pro 80 aka cloud hyperx and SOny XBA-h1s now. The XBA's are pretty trash, they fatigue the shit out of me I suppose. I do not enjoy listening to them for more than an hour.

The takstars are okay for a closed budget headphone but outside of them being comfy there isn't anything I particularly like about the sound, they come across as bland to me.

>DT-990
Don't fix what isn't broke?
The real question from my end is whether you would still enjoy them.
DT990 is mostly characterized by a large, wide boost centered somewhere around 100-150 Hz, rises around 8-11 kHz or so, a V-shaped headphone.
>XBA-H1
Excessive emphasis on any particular frequency can cause fatigue, not very specific.
If you still take to the sound of the DT990, probably has to do with the ~5kHz spike the H1 has.
>M50
>Recently comparing them to my XBA-h1 they were extremely similar and I definitely don't want to pick up something that could be called similar to the m50
The older m50 should be somewhat V-shaped itself.
DT990 should still have key differences, more general emphasis on top (vocal, cymbals/hi-hats) and smoother sound. But, somewhat trickier to determine.

It's a motherboard or PSU problem. Check your cable routing and try to move any cards like video cards to the slot furthest away from the DAC part of the motherboard. Worst case, you can try installing some EM shields in the case.

An external DAC will also fix this and is probably less hassle.

It is a suitable upgrade, as long as they fit your preferred sound signature(s).

If you're not sure what your preferred signatures are, then do it anyway because they're a nice starting point before you decide to move into something more expensive (i.e. what did I like or not like about these that I don't want in a higher-end pair?).

That would be me. The difference is small but it makes them slightly less dark and I prefer that over the standard. Then again, I like my ER-4S the most which are downright bright in comparison.

>>58963577
Small but audible. Pic related is the Rin Choi's measurements with different dampers swapped. Right plot is the DF equalized frequency response where white is the stock and grey is the SE.

A pair of JBL LSR305s is somewhat of a no-brainer at that price point.

If you like the sound they are great. Good fit and tip selection, small housing, quality replaceable cable with very little microphonics but I guess you know that already if you had the SE315. The SE535s are very dark sounding in-ears, the plots here show you the response.

Anything with a removable MMCX cable should do well. Chi-Fi IEMs are good candidates, like the Senfer UEs or Tennmak Pros. The cables are generally a lot more durable, and you can just replace the cable for $10 if it ever breaks, since its almost always the cable and not the IEM.

For $200 it's a pretty good deal, especially if MD holds true to that to their shipping within two business days. But that $650 MSRP is pretty much bullcrap (afaik, they just used the same suggested retail price as the Austrian-made K702 65th anniversary, which is what the k7xx was influenced/derived from).

Each have their own strengths and weeknesses. Unfortunately the best way to determine this would be to try all of them out for yourself (which may be difficult to do so).

Yes, but the K7XX has been around for ~2 years longer than the HD6XX, so the HD6XX would be more like the K7XX of Sennheiser.

I have a samsung phone, is it possible to give some IEMs more power through the headphone jack without using an external amp? I don't care about battery life.

My poorfag friend has them, the stock pads are practically cloth frisbees. Slap on Brainwavs HM5 pads and you're golden with comfort and isolation. I'd get the monoprice ones if you have a small head. The tascam's practically float on my small head and slip around with HM5's on.

Recommend me something based on these headphones that I've been using for the past 5 years

Budget 300€

Either closed or open
Past: DT990. Someone highly recommended me these because of its bass but the treble was like having cymbals splashing inside my ears. Jesus

If you can find a pair, Fidelio L1's or X2's. Sennheiser HD 650's work as well.

JVC flats are pretty neutral I guess looking for $10 US.

Not full sized so they're on ear, but the sound isn't awful.

Otherwise I'd look into the Superlux 661 or Samson SR950, which would also probably require new pads.

Just save up some more for the Creative Aurvana Lives.

SR950's are pretty comfy with it's stock pads though have a long, non-detachable cable. Superlux HD 669's are the same with the wing headband and a detachable cable including a short 1.5 meter and a longer 3 meter cord.

The velour pads that come with the HD600s are starting to irritate my ears. I'm talking soreness, red inflamed skin, itchiness, burning sensations, etc.

Is there another type of pads that I can use?

I own a pair of the k271 mkii, and haven't heard the k240 mkii/studio in a long time, but iirc the k240 actually has a bit more in the low end than the k271 has, despite the latter being a closed back. The k271 is more flat and analytical sounding, and I feel it's a headphone made for monitoring vocals over everything else. It's rather unique sounding in that aspect.

>>58974234
The peak on the X2 isn't like DT990's 'cymbals splashing inside my ears'
>>
>>58975206
Any recommendations for leather that fit the HD600s?
>>
>>58975812
Brainwavz sheepskin for max comfort but they might be too thick
Shure pleather pads are about as deep as the original pads and would be your best option sound wise
Also the 1540 pads are neither velour nor leather but damn expensive
>>
>>58976024
I heard that the Brainwavz distorts the sound. Is this true?
>>
>>58976046
The HD600 puts the drivers very close to your ears so a pad that is too deep would alter the sound, yes

Whats the open office noise isolating headphone recommendation/meme here?
>>
>>58976122
There's a nasty peak around 7/8KHz, another one around 13KHz both of which I reduced by -7dB. Some measurments show a peak at 4khz but I never noticed that region to be aggressive. The 2khz peak isn't that bad, could reduce the dip a bit (-3dB tops). I ultimately sold them because I never managed to tame the peaks without making the headphone sounding like crap afterwards
>>
>>58976131
The regular ones are already questionably thick for the hd600 so the angled ones would be even worse
>>
>>58976249
Angled pads are the most comfortable though and they sit on your head naturally.
>>
>>58976273
Yeah, better for comfort, and natural fit but angled brainwavz pads would just completely mess up the sound of the HD600

Do you need a DAC to drive a pair of Sennheiser HD 598 or will a regular laptop motherboard be just fine?
>>

DACs just convert a digital signal to an analog signal. Every PC has it and you only need an external one if you hear any noise. The 598 are extremely sensitive and there's no reason to buy an amplifier

I use the Audio Technica ATH MSR7, got it for $270 AUD free shipping from StoreDJ. If you are used to bloated bass you will take some time to adjust to them; they are fairly neutral, with crisp treble. They do have some power to them but they are fast-sounding; bass is quick and punchy but can have force when a track requires it. Really soft earpads but they are a little bit shallow. Also clamping force is a bit tight. I personally have no issued with the comfort and have used them for a few years. However they are fairly up-front sounding and your ears may feel a little bit fatigued if you listen for 5 hours or more. Recommended.
For gaming i just got the HyperX Cloud's. You can get them for around 80 AUD on ebay and they are simple to use, decent quality with a good mic.

I own both and i would say that the HD558 (mod) have a wider sound stage and are more precise. When EQed they sound a lot more natural. By default they are flat, though they don't have a lot of bass, but once EQed its pretty deep and awesome.
the DT770's are a lot more isolating and have much deeper bass. When not EQed I find them a lot more enjoyable than the un-EQed HD's. I would call myself a bass head though. The V shape of the DT's doesn't bother me.

The HD558's are more flat and analytical
The DT770's are more "FUN"

Already ruled out: cost is similar, but they don't have a removable cable, and build quality is clearly superior on the M40x,

They look flimsy but they're absolute tanks and can stand years of abuse. Can't do much about the cable though unless you mod it yourself.

Angled puts more space away from the driver, potentially losing more bass than the regular pads though is a bit more comfortable as they shape better to your head.

Not necessarily. I've seen them on open cans to compliment the airy sound of open backs. The Samson SR950's I have in the closet have stock velour pads, DT770's use velour pads just to name a couple of closed cans with velours. It's mostly comfort on closed cans.
