First for the best budget headphones under $100 USD

Pasting my post from the previous thread because I didn't get much response for it:

My PC through a Scarlett 2i2, my phone occasionally, but mostly meant to be used at home
>Type of headphone:
Full-sized, absolutely.
>Open or closed
I am not very knowledgeable about this stuff and never personally experienced the difference between the two. Since these headphones are meant to be used at home mostly and there aren't many noises around, it's no big deal if they're open. Since they're gonna be used not only for music listening & music making but also for gaming, I imagine the soundstage is important.
>Comfort level
I prefer comfy but I never use them for more than ~2 hours at a time without break so if it's comfortability vs superior sound quality, I'm going for sound.
>Sound signature
Neutral as possible. I want that shit to play things just like they were recorded.
>>Past headphones
Some incredibly shitty Icon headphones - the "HP-280". I'm currently using them because my second pair of headphones, whose name I forget right now, was some chinkshit thing from /csg/ they they recommend often. They were good but one channel just stopped working one day and I couldn't fix it.

Now I already read up a bit, and I did narrow it down to three likely options.
1. Audio Technica ATH-M40x
2. Shure SRH440
3. Grado SR80E
I read that the M40x have a virtually nonexistent soundstage, which is a bummer because I also hear they sound great.
I read that the Shure has shoddy build quality and are uncomfortable but otherwise sound great and have a decent 'soundstage' for closed headphones.
I read that the Grado SR80E are about equal to the Shure except they're open rather than closed.
Since selection is fairly limited in Israel it would be best for me to get one of these, but if there's some notably superior product for my needs at this price range I'm very much interested in hearing.
If you know the models I mentioned please comment on them!

Reposting from last thread because I want opinions.

Ok so I'm not a major sound autist like you guys probably are, but I figured I'd get some extra feedback.

I got these (Phillips SHL3300 DJ) for around 55$ where I live, and I've been hearing they're outstanding for the price. They sound real nice and they were stupid cheap. From the few reviews I've seen they're apparently one of the best bang for your buck headphones.

What do you think?
>>
>>58931632

>>

>I imagine the soundstage is important
It isn't. "Soundstage" is a property of the signature, and can be adjusted by the end user.

I haven't really found anyone complaining about the build quality, apart from mentions of being a little flimsy since they are all plastic and they kinda flop around because there's no real resistance in the hinges.

This is mostly dismissed though, because the sound quality and overall feel are amazing for the price range, some people saying they go sub-20$ on some markets.

What sort of build quality issues did you mean? I got curious now.

A quick Google search found me a bunch of people complaining through Newegg reviews.

Generally, good sound for the price, but comfort could be a lot better; pads not comfortable and the headband squeezes too tightly. Quality control also seems to be an issue, but i'm still unsure on what to make up of that.

>>
>>58932120
Yeah, the pads are definitely not the best. I've been having to readjust constantly because my ears start to hurt from being squashed.
I figured the headband would get looser over time, but I could be wrong. I just got them yesterday after all.

I have an old SHP2700 pair, but I don't think the pads come off on them so I can't swap em around.
I was thinking of buying another separate set of pads. What would you recommend? Preferrably over ear.

Been comparing these two for a while now.

X2 is the overall winner for me.

And I can't tell if the 400i sounds better when I angle them slightly.
I should really get some angled pads for them.

And while I'm on that subject, anyone with the X2s that has replaced the pads?
They seem glued on.

Looking for a way to keep Apple earpods in my ears at all time (running, harsh movement etc).
Keeping my struggle story short: I have glasses and any on-ear/over-ear hurt af and I like the convenience of earbuds. In-ear ones are a no-go for many reasons. Now that my favorite headphones are out of production, looking for a way to keep Apple Earpods in my big ears from falling out.

Bought pic related, still a bit small and not very stiff. Anyone know any solution?

Hello /g/ I am in need of a DAC to go with my Little Dot I+ Headphone Amp.
I will be pairing this set up with a HE400i and would love suggestions. around 100 USD please.
Thanks in advance.
>>
>>58939120
So I'm not the only one.
>>
Pretty much all headphones below $300 are cheap plastic garbage and sound like listening to music with a cloth bag over your head.
I don't know why you people don't just save money to buy real quality.
>>
>>58939120
I bought a pair of ATH-IM70s and i can't even use them because of this
>>
>>58932573
They have severe seal issues. They can range anywhere from anemic and bright when the seal is awful, to moderate V-shape when the seal is perfect. You need to really put them on and see how your head works with them.

Most people find them to be /slightly/ v-shaped, which is indeed what I found. They're good if your seal is good.
>>
>>58938915
Well for starters don't listen to Zeos at all, ZEOS REVIEWS ARE FOR AESTHETICS ONLY, don't listen to anything he has to say about sound.

Read multiple head-fi reviews from users that have the background/headphone collection to back up their statements. Sometimes reddit is good if you look at the user talking, otherwise its no better than here, with retards babbling about Audio-Technica products.
>>
>>58939525
You don't understand why people don't spend 80% of a week's pay on headphones?
Some of us want to step up to it, not buy the wrong god damn ones. Learn what sounds good and bad at the $50 or $100 level.
I'm not committing that much with my retarded knowledge about headphones. I'm just looking for it to not sound like tin foil.
>>
>>58935075
Hot glue. But realistically, you'll have a better time with IEMs.
>>
>>58935498
X2's. 770's will just be a more comfortable, more V-shaped version of clouds, with a bit more raw quality.

X2's will give you better soundstage and more airy sound as well as improved quality.
>>

>>
>>58939687
It currently is at the top of my list, specially because of the removable cable and price, but I keep getting some recommendations like the HE-400I. Should I save and step up to something like that, which is going to be worse for whenever I need a microphone, since I can't use a BoomPro like with the X2? It's really annoying that people keep recommending wildly different things from wildly different price ranges. Still, thanks a lot for the reply anon.

I bought HD 598s and they've lasted a few years, but I should clean the ear cushions.
How much worse are they than the HD 600s?

My HD 598s had an adaptor that was needed to fit the cord into a 3.5mm jack.

HD598's have a weird twist lock 2.5mm connector on the headphone end. You'll either have to source one of them, or just buy a new cable [which is sadly often cheaper]. Audio Technica also uses the same connector, so you might be able to get one from there as well.

Sennheiser's dumb cable shit really annoys me.

I recently bought the Superlux HD681B to replace my Plantronics Rig (since the ear pads fell off and there's no way of putting it back or replacing it anymore) from a local online store since it was around $20 cheaper than the 668s.

Does anybody own these? I was wondering if these are good enough but obviously, the 668s are way better.
>>
>>58942129
Depends on the output impedance of your phone, I have an mp3 player with a really high output impedance and everything sounds like bassless garbage out of it.
>>
>>58942287
Other than Sony I don't see manufacturers doing that and even their phones go to around ten to twenty ohm Zout which isn't a lot.

High Zout doesn't cause a loss of bass and with the HD 5xx-series Sennheisers the result is actually more bass at the driver resonance around 100 Hz. Capacitor coupled output stages act as high pass filters and be pretty destructive to sound quality. Bad designs are a thing. I have a laptop which has a headphone port like that.

>>58941877
>Lets not talk about this.
The idea of that is to tell us what you previously had and what were your thoughts about those past headphones. It can make our job easier if there were things you heavily disliked or enjoyed about them.

But anyway, I recommend Shure SRH1540. It doesn't need an amplifier but if you want to invest on a quality amplifier anyway, what would you like it to do? Your budget allows a lot here. Two options I can think of immediately:

Benchmark DAC1 used
Schiit Jotunheim

Both have high quality headphone outputs, more gain you will ever need, a lot of I/O and aside from doing headphone amplification, they work as DA-converters and preamplifiers if you ever feel the need for that in a dedicated desktop unit.

>>
>>58937700
To be excessively literal and somewhat naive, everything is given by frequency response at the ear. The non-trivial issue is what features of the frequency do you want to relate to.
>Placement
As in geometry?
If you look at the end result, it influences the transfer function, which is mathematically simple to recreate, if not practically so.
Which part of acoustics were you referring to? Delayed and attenuated reflections? Interactions of reflected sound with the directivity of the ear? ITD and ILD?

>>58938250
Foam cannot seal like silicone and other nonporous tips. The utility of foam is not being ill-fitted to the contours of the ear, as well as providing some damping material.
There are legions of tips on the marketplace. Some will fit, some will not. You aren't providing enough information go any further.
>>
>>58942866

>do they even ship internationally
Not sure about the special editions but they are Pioneer SE-CL522 in-ears which are available internationally.
>and are those actually good?
Eh, since it's a sealed dynamic driver in-ear I would take a guess and say it's probably excessively bassy with peaky treble response. Might even be a little V-shaped. I didn't find any measurements but that's generally how in-ears are, especially at this price point and of this design. My personal opinion assuming the earlier is true: not good.

It's tinnitus. Take better care of your ears in the future or it will get worse.
>>
>>58943548
>is this serious?
No, it's probably tinnitus. Consider it a warning that you should stop listening to very loud music or be more careful where you wonder (loud cars, construction sites).

I have it to my man and I have no idea how I got it. I recommend checking an otolaryngologist. I have an MRI schedulled to see if there's anything inside my head causing these noises. I doubt they'll find anything but I won't stop seeking professional help until all options run out

>>
>>58943724
And yes, for me at least, using a pair of open headphones will reduce the ringing by a big margin.
>>
>>58943594
pretty much everyone has it, but in varying degrees, take care or it'll get worse
be sure to often change your volume, change it to a little but below what you find perfect. Then over time you'll be able to reduce your "perfect" volume to about half
>>
>>58943776
Not the same anon, but I own a pair of HD650s and a fiio e10k. I never go over 4 on the knob (unless the track itself is really low) and I use low gain. How the hell did I get tinnitus?
>>
>>58943813
It can be genetic, or induces from prior infections.

I had a bad infection a while ago and have had it ever since. I can hardly hear it over the laptop fan running at fucking jet engine mode, but I legitimately cant sleep in silence now. It's scary to think I'll never hear silence again in my life.

I currently use the Sennheiser Momentums which I absolutely love. I also use the Apple Earpods too which I like a lot. As for headsets, I have a Sades headset and the Logitech G633 that I switch out every so often when I cant stand them.

The Headphones Im currently looking at are the AKG K240 MKII and the Sennheiser HD558's. I'd like to go with the AKG's but I've heard that the build quality is kind of iffy, and the only problem I have with the Sennheisers is that they dont appear to have a removable cord, which I'd kind of like.

I showed some of my friends my 650 and e10k once. They set it to max and turned on high gain and asked me if it couldn't go any louder

I honestly don't get it. How can people listen to music so ridiculously loud and not get tinnitus? Hell, my father, when he was in the army, got a pistol right near one of his hears when it was fired. The noise was so loud he spent weeks (or months) without being able to listen from that hear due to permanent damage but guess what - still no tinnitus
>>
>>58943937

I heard IEMs over $200 don't actually sound "better" than one another, they just have different sound signatures
>>
Just got the DT-770 and I'm pretty fucking impressed by what this thing can do
>>
>>58947520
Look into CAL, HM5, M40x, Sony V6/7506. Beyerdynamic DT770.

Many options to be found with a quick google search, not sure they'll be much of an upgrade of what you have already though.
>>
HD 600s are €270 on Amazon UK, thinking of buying but don't have an dac/amp for them, could get one in a few months though. Is it worth it without a good source or should I just buy 599s?
>>
>>58948185
>$200
my cut off point is 50 bucks. above that and you're probably paying for build quality rather than sound quality. they're iem's man how good could they possibly sound
>>
>>58948342
>they're iem's man how good could they possibly sound
As good as any headphone and better due to simplified acoustics involved.

This price point jerk is useless.
>>
>>58948291
Not looking for an upgrade, more of just a pair of closed to use on the go. Thanks for the recs though :)

iem's sound better than full sized headphones everyone, you heard it here first

Anyone got any recs for a good portable DAC? I snagged a Dragonfly v1.2 for $80 and have been using it for a while, but the USB end is getting a bit loose and might fail on me soon. I might get the new red, but have no idea if it's much better than earlier versions. Any ideas?

Using Shure 1540s.
>>
>>58948314
If you want a neutral sound signature then the 600 will be what you want. Your motherboard will probably be "good enough" to drive them to listenable levels but it'll be worth the investment in the long run when you can get an amp for them.
>>
>>58948005
AD-500X and Sennheiser 559?
>>
>>58948420
>iem's sound better than full sized headphones everyone
Indeed or rather, they can more easily achieve high(er) fidelity than headphones as ear response and seal aren't issues anymore.
>you heard it here first
Almost sounds like this is somehow surprising or even ridiculous to you. Why?

You probably need a DAC/amp combo.

I'm using a pair of MDR V6s. I almost exclusively use them on my PC. Would an external DAC/amp be a good investment?
>>
>>58948185
Price doesn't have anything to do with acoustics.
In a certain sense, you need very little to construct a good sounding IEM. Little amount of materiel, some damping filters, and drivers of choice. The small excursions required to generate high SPL at the ear are a boon to linearity, and the pressure chamber enables ultimate bass extension.

>>58948620
>as ear response and seal aren't issues anymore
We substitute the outer ear and the half-open/half-closed canal for the response of the earphone in a sealed cavity. Thus, the ear's native transfer function is totally discarded and replaced by the earphone response coupled with the acoustic load.
Acoustic impedance issues are more dire with these small volumes; upper frequency response is highly dependent on the dimensions of the ear.
Seal is an even more serious issue than it already was for other types of headphone. What is lost are the degrees of freedom with earpiece positioning. These are now restricted to one effective line of travel, at most. The transmission line resonances are also more clearly visible for it.

You can deal with all of the above, of course. These are just a few challenges in the design, as of any other.

It's not bad at all. They start slide off if I tilt my head flat like I'm lying down, or shake it back and forth, but I suspect most headphones are like that.
Love the ear pads.

Much more durable. Used more often in pro audio too. Especially with guitars.

They're great for stationary use but shithouse for anything ever used when mobile. I dont get why more companies dont just do what Beyer does and just have it screw onto the 3.5mm.
