Good specs for the price
MicroSD slot
Stock android, already got updated to Nougat
Easy to unlock / root
Plenty of custom ROMs available (inc. official LineageOS)
Removable battery (only on the G4 Play)

There are chinkphones that have better specs for same price, but they often don't have support for all the network bands you might need + you can forget about having warranty or repair service

Been using Redmi Note 4 for a week.

MIUI is fucking trash, seriously. Seeing it in pros in OP link surprised me. This iOS/Touchjizz mix is fucking disgusting, but that's something you get used to. However, you won't get used to notifications. They look and work like Android 4.0 notifications, meaning you can't expand them, you can't perform actions without opening the app first, they're still using colored icons etc.
The worst part is that they straight up don't fucking work most of the time. You can reply to a message, turn off screen, put the phone on the table, only to pick it up in 20 minutes only to find out you got a text back the same fucking minute but no notification. This shit is fucking infuriating. I turned off all the power saving shit in the settings, and it still happens sometimes. If you look up "miui notifications not working" you get like a 10-step guide to get this shit working, and it still doesn't.

Other than that I'm really pleased with it. Very good screen, really sturdy build, decently loud speaker, good call quality, 8+ hours of screen time no matter what I do with it, and insanely cheap for what you get. My last phone was Z3 Compact which had plenty of issues, most notably shitty screen that also came off two times, after the second time I decided it's time to get a replacement.

tl;dr Notifications are a fucking disaster, otherwise pretty good

>>
>>58934755
1 year GS7 user here.

If it's not the S7 edge and just the regular one you're talking about, its not too good or too bad. Solid. There are honestly better phones out there for less but the crisp OLED screen, front camera and fingerprint button is a selling point. The front camera works pretty good in dim areas as advertised.

Overall, it's as good as my old GS3 but obviously faster and has less battery drainage ofc. You can get rid of touchwiz with Nova Launcher or something similar.

Also, this might be moot but it's not fuckhuge like other fingerprint-meme phones such as the Google Nexus. I don't need to buy a manpurse for a king-sized chocolate bar phone.

To be fair anon, those reviews aren't wrong but they are outdated. Many of the earlier complaints have been addressed (i.e. Camera autofocus and aggressive battery management). Of course, it's not a perfect phone, but any one interested in a phone that's more than a few months old should assess the current opinions of the community at large rather than a few year old blogs.

You have to "whitelist" app to allow it to run in background on miui.

It's a great system taking in account current state of android and (non existing) background process management.

XDA has a script to unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP. From there getting rid of the ads is as simple as flashing a .zip. And if you don't want to go to all that trouble you can disable them temporarily (until reboot) by enabling developer options and stopping the ads service.

Best $60 dollars I ever spent. Makes a handy backup phone and it's not so bad in its own right. The 2 gig version has handled everything I've thrown at it just fine, though the most intensive thing I've done was play GTA Libert City Stories.

I only opted for the 32gb version as most of my stuff is stored in Google Drive and all my music and stuff is through Spotify. I also went for the smaller version, as opposed to the XL.
I can say, after using it a lot, that it is one of my most favourite smart phones I've ever had. I've Samsung since the S2 and decided it was time to change. I think it's absolutely amazing and super fast too.

The only thing that gets me is the price of it. I managed to haggle a little so I got the handset for free at the local EE store, but the phone itself is a little too expensive still. However, you could say the extra price goes towards the extra online storage you have.

It doesn't have an SD card slot but I'm fine without it. As said, most of my stuff is in cloud storage and getting two USB-C cables with the phone made moving stuff from my old S6 to the Pixel an absolute breeze.

I think I made a pretty good choice. I would have liked to have had a 1440p screen on this smaller phone, but it's not a deal breaker. The camera is great and works extremely well in low light conditions too, although, it would have been nicer to have some more video format settings like you see on the Samsung phones, for example, the phone doesn't record in 60fps.

But they're just my thoughts. I thought the best place to post them would be here and I can answer any questions to those who have them?

>>58950724
RN4X just launched in China, so a lot of the resellers still have it on presale.
https://www.kimovil.com/en/where-to-buy-xiaomi-redmi-note-4x

The Mediatek SoC in the Note 4 is less power efficient than the Snapdragon SoCs in the other Redmi's I mentioned, so power life will be less with the same battery capacity. The CPU is slightly more powerful in the Mediatek but it's paired with a GPU that's quite a bit weaker compared to what the Snapdragon SoCs have so the phone might actually feel laggier, especially when gaming. Also the phone will never get proper custom ROM support, because Mediatek doesn't release kernel sources.

On a separate note, would buying a 6p be a bad idea at this ppint? I guess I could also save up and buy a pixel or something but it just seems so mediocre. Would a op3 be better?
>>
How is the nexus 5x ?
>>
>>58962556
Honestly I wouldn't bother with the 6P. Other than the great camera it has it's really not that good. The Snapdragon 810 SoC makes the phone overheat and lag, battery life is pretty bad and there's been a lot of boot loop issues reported with it. Also Nexus phones are only guaranteed two years of software updates so the next android update might be the last it gets.

Pixel probably has the best camera in any smartphone at the moment but other than that it's pretty similar to the OP3 in specs while being way more expensive. Galaxy S7 comes pretty close to the Pixel in terms of camera quality while having loads of other nice features such as waterproofing and a SD card slot.
>>
>>58962581
It's 100% guaranteed to bootloop
>>
>>58962668
I don't even need to upgrade, I'm just curious because I have an axon 7 and I really do like it but the camera is pretty shit unless it's a bright sunny day which is uncommon for where I live. Or some kind soul that can tell me where to cop a used Op3 for cheap?
>>
>>58963282
But GSM says it's expected to be next month and on the HTC site it says it's taking pre-orders.
>>
Dumb question from a retard, but can you switch to a custom ROM & keep all of your data & 4G?
>>
>>58963400
Oh yeah, you're right. Just saw it was in stock on HTC's site, didn't notice it said that shipments start mid-march. I'd say might as well wait, there's also MWC coming soon where they're announcing a lot of new phones.
>>
>>58963339
Not really, I was just trying to figure things out, and didn't realise the k6000 Pro was actually more powerful. I'll try and decide between the 3s /Prime and the K6000 Pro then. Thanks!
>>
>>58963457
What do you mean with keeping your 4G? You'll have to back up your data because everything gets wiped when unlock the bootloader
>>
>>58963457
Flashing a rom doesn't wipe your data. Unlocking your bootloader does though, which is a one time thing.
>>
>>58963515

Anybody knows of any ROMs for the Note 4 (Samsung) that have a near stock experience or something similar? I just want to get rid of touchwizz forever. Would it be possible to keep some of the functionalities, such as S-pen, and a proper camera app?

Thanks beforehand.
>>
>>58963731
Will I lose the data in my carrier's plan, not my internal storage (which can be backed up)?
>>
>>58963827
Ah got you. No you won't lose your mobile data.

I kind of want to, but man I'm but at waiting. Maybe I can just buy the HTC10 for now, and if the U gets good reviews I'll just sell it.
>also no headphone jack on the U
Bothering me, but I'm guessing this is where all the phones are going now.

So fucking tired trying to understand the differences between the 500 billion xiaomi devices so just give it to me straight. I loved the design of the Xiaomi Note 4 and I think the Note 3 Pro looks like shit in comparison, but which one is better? Which one should I get from both versions of the Note 4? There are two different cpus apparently.
>>
All right, so I realize I don't do much with my smartphones besides text, browse the web, play music, or check emails.

Was thinking of buying the HTC10, it's got a sale right now, but was wondering if there was a step down that was exactly the same, besides it's "power", that I can also root, and still has good audio quality and hi-fi.

Anyone know of one that exists such as that? Some of the other cheaper HTCs don't seem to match up with what I need.

Dang, thing you got me a winner here for me with the G4. I'm a lousy waiter.
Has good review on sound, has it's own micro sd slot, can build my own for to about $300, works with my network, and can get a cheap enough protection plan.
Only thing I'm not sure about is if it has hi-fi or not. As bad as it sounds it is a deal breaker for me.

Maybe give more details on software and hardware preferences.

What size screen?

What size battery?

Stock, stockish, or skinned android?

Provider?

Things like that would help a lot. Of course, I'll happily shill my device, the Axon 7, which hits many of your use points but does have some quirks to consider. Otherwise, the OP3T is the undisputed champ of bang for buck in that price range.
>>
>>58967252
5.5 screen I guess? (Last phone I had was an Iphone 4)
Normal sized battery
Anything
Verizon or Tmobile perferrably, maybe something else

I got kind of turned off of the OP3T because of the whole flashing roms thing and other shit I'm not experienced with.
>>
Which is the better phone overall Redmi 4 prime or Note 3 pro
>>
>>58967200
If your 100% sure you need a hi fi dac, as in more than just placebo, your options are pretty limited and I would recommend careful consideration of all aspects of the device.

But if you're set on a hi fi dac, the Axon 7 and Axon 7 mini have a dac second to the v20 alone. Check out the pocketnow review of sound quality for the evidence. However, the devices have plenty of stumbling points, so I can't 100% recommend them for you.
>>
>>58967335
I've been hearing the HTC10 is what I need in those regards, but maybe it's a meme. Did look into a little of the Axon 7 but I've been iffy about it.

Maybe I should just get an external or something.

Otherwise I heard the v20 is what I need but I'm not going through with their bootloop shit again.
>>
>>58967330
5.5 will probably feel massive coming from an iPhone 4. I went from a nexus 5 to an Axon 7, and I'm still having a hard time adjusting (disclaimer: am manlet). Verizon is problematic, since they rarely let unlocked phones on their network, even if compatible. If you need Verizon, the moto z play is an excellent device due to great battery life and non frustrating, stock software. On T-Mobile or AT&T your options are wider for that price (assuming off contract). I hesitate to recommend meme phones like the redmi 3 pro or the Zuk Z2, as they practically require installing a custom Rom.

But honestly, you've got it all wrong with the OP3T, anon. The beauty of that device is it's greatness out of the box. It gives a better than stock (disclaimer: opinion) version of Android but still gives you the freedom to customize and flash if you so choose. But it is probably the point where a custom Rom is least necessary (opinion) and if you turn in to a power user later, all the better.
>>
>>58967383
I've not heard the HTC 10 called a meme, except as "the best phone nobody is buying" (see Mr. Mobile's review) It's a solid phone that does everything pretty well, but not amazing, and it's pricey. An expensive jack-of-all-trades does not often appeal to consumers, but it has few shortcomings (unless you need amoled).

As for the Axon 7, I've got one right here so ask away if you want honest answers.

Yeah, that's one of the v20's major shortcomings. Maybe they'll get it right with the G6, if you're willing to wait longer.
>>
>>58967453
It is pricey. Even with this sale it's coming close to $600. Comes with a nice "looking" warranty at least, and seems sturdy enough. AMOLED is some nice shit, but I'm not worried about it.

Only thing I can think of is that I heard the audio quality via headphones really drops.

I had the v10. Bootlooped and LG wouldn't fix it because I repaired the screen myself when they decided to charge me more than what I could do for myself on it. So I'm not looking to buy their devices anytime soon.

I have an iPhone 7 plus but won a new 6p at work. I've been fiddling with it for awhile (put on pure nexus and have android pay working) and think it's pretty nice. Should I just sell the iPhone? I can get like $950 for it at this point.
>>
>>58967495
Damn, anon, I saw it for $400 during black friday sales. Is it any wonder HTC is still tanking these days? At $400 I was very close to getting it myself, but I couldn't see it being worth $600.

I don't know where you've heard that meme about the Axon 7. Far as I can tell, it sounds like a corruption of the well debated issue of which apps can access the hi-fi dac vs the internal SD820 dac. Early on, it was believed that only the stock music app (which is trash) was the only app able to access the hi-fi dac. However, not only is this now considered fixed with the nougat update but Lineage OS set a flag to turn on the "Super" hi-fi setting whenever music is played through headphones. Of course, users reported that the super-mode that kicked in when playing Flac files through the stock music app drained battery superfast and wasn't worth it on battery power. I wish I could speak from personal experience, but I'm not a certified audiophile. I can only speak about what I've read, so please take my opinions (like those of everyone else here) with a grain of salt.
>>
>>58967554
I'm double rounding here because it's 549 really, so I'm rounding pretty far. But rounding like that has saved me some money in the past. I still get their decent warranty for 12 months at least. As well as the color I want as well, which is red.

Thanks for giving me the insight, anon. I will take it with salt, but I'll still try to look into it when I can. Assuming there's plenty of forum discussions I can search anyways. It wasn't too bad of a price either.

Might just see about buying an DAC or amp. Haven't needed one yet, but eh. Maybe it wouldn't hurt.
>>
Is the Xiaomi Mi5S 3GB better than the Galaxy s7? im buying my first smartphone tomorrow but i dont know which to pick
>>
>>58967409
So you think even as an inexperienced user the OP3T will be fine? I heard some bad things about using the OTA to download the new update and having to do it manually or whatever. I was actually dissauded not to buy one from other OP3T users.
>>
>>58967649
Ah, I agree with you there anon. Red is the best color.

I'm happy to help my dude, love talking about the phone. Just wish I could be of more practical help, but I'm just not certain my ears can tell the difference. Also, there are way more reasons why one should hesitate about the device, beside whether or not the dac will activate with this specific app or have this specific sound profile relative to another phone.

I got nothing on external dacs, that's a whole 'nother thread.
>>
>>58967678
Ok, you got me, I don't actually own a OP3T, so I really can't give you the perfect insight into the phone.

I don't know what the OP3T users say or what issues there are with specific devices, because I don't go to the places where those users discuss such things.

What I've seen from reviewers and reviews is that its an excellent device that is enthusiast centric but still offers an out of the box experience that rivals the nexus line (RIP).

My first android was a Nexus 5, from an iphone 4. It was the ethusiast centric device of its time, and after careful searching was the best device for me. I don't know if you've jailbroken before, anon, but that was something I had to do to make the iphone usable for me. Thus, I was more than ready to flash, root, unlock, etc. Shits real easy on enthusiast devices, compared to things like iphones or samsung phones.

I also don't know what's driving you from iOS to Android, but if you want a taste of the best android has to offer, you're better off with a stock(ish) device (e.g. pixel or OP3T) as opposed to something with a heavy OEM skin (e.g. LG or Samsung phones). Besides, the OP3T has one of the most active communities out there, and there will be plenty of people writing step by step guides and providing idiot proof software fixes for learners.
>>
>>58967754
Definitely not a color you see these days on phone, and my favorite. Look on Amazon for a red HTC10. WAS around $700 before I rechecked. Someone is reselling it for $400, but seems kind of sketchy. Straight from the brand seems the safer route.

I'm guessing you are happy about it overall? It can be with a lot of devices sometimes, as I find myself. But I've noticed at least with hi-fi devices they over a wider sound limit range. It might be the same overall, but it ends up being more precise. Or at least on the preset up and down keys.
What do you like about the phone otherwise? And not like?

No worries there. I'd look that up on my own if I need to. Try to avoid having to need extra accessories though.
>>
>>58967840
I still regret not getting the red nexus 5.

I would say I'm happy with the phone over all. It was a welcome upgrade over my failing nexus 5.

Not entirely sure what you meant talking about hi-fi devices, you might have accidently a word there.

It's easier to talk about what I don't like, since that list is shorter.
Hardware:

1. A bit too large for my hands (especially with a case) but is also super slippery without a case (got a dbrand skin coming in to help).

2. Capacitive buttons not backlit and in weird placement (but I like their floating virtual key option)

3. Camera performance was so so until nougat update (but I really don't take pictures anyway).

Software:

1. Agressive battery management sometimes gets too agressive (used to kill music apps, not anymore with update)

2. Mifavor UI is a lighter skin than most, but still has a few annoying "features" tacked on for no reason (e.g. voice and face unlock), but hides some useful features (e.g. System UI manager). Of course, useless stuff can be disabled and useful stuff can be worked around. Also custom launchers are huge.

3. (This one may be important to you) Volume step ups/downs are too large, one click up is far too loud, one down far too soft. Can be fixed with Dolby Atmos software or root programs

That's the short list of what comes to mind for dislikes. Other than those 6 things, I love the device. The audio and video are incredible, its fast and charges fast, it has a decent ROM community with which the developers cooperate, and its battery life is much better than my nexus. Hope that was informative, but was probably repetitive considering other reviews have done this phone to death.

Preferably wait and see what their SD835 flagship will be.

As for htc 10 vs u ultra then go with the 10.
>>
>>58967945
Didn't look into the Nexus 5 much, but if it had a red then it was a good looking phone. (Beyond the bootloop.)

I think I meant offer rather than "over" when I look back. By that I mean I did. The volume on hi-fi devices just seem more accurate/precise from what I have seen. But it's still all personal experience.

Thanks for all the insight on your phone, anon. Will still look to into it more. As I might get it or the G4 over the 10 due the price difference.

A decent community and being able to root and use custom ROMs is another big thing. Feel like I could have avoided the trouble with my v10 if either of those happened. Then again I guess the bootloop was a hardware problem.
>>
>>58964471
It's really nice so far. Only complaint is somewhat sluggish boot but that doesn't bother me. Feels great in hand, nice sharp screen. But keep in mind all of this is coming from a GS2 owner, anything is going to be an upgrade for me, but I'm liking it a lot so far and I know it's gonna be unique.
