Anyone else use an EQ with their 600's? I'm testing out adding a little bass to them, but I don't want to mess up the overall signature.
>>
>>58915241
I'd imagine plenty.

Try:

Preamp -7
+7 dB @ 20 Hz Q 0.7
-2 dB @ 170 Hz Q 0.5

The 170 Hz filter is wide enough to alter 20 Hz region so you can use equal amount of negative gain as the highest boost without risking clipping.

I know how to use my APO EQ slightly but I have no idea what you mean f.am

Here's what I've done so far and it doesn't sound bad, I don't want them too bassy because it messes up everything else slightly imo.

If you use apo please show me what you would do rather than try and explain it to a retard, cheers.

Learn to use a parametric equalizer. Disable everything you have in the EQ APO right now or just remove those.

Preamp: -7 dB
Filter: ON PK Fc 20 Hz Gain 7 dB Q 0.7
Filter: ON PK Fc 170 Hz Gain -2 dB Q 0.5

Copy that, paste it into a text file and save it wherever and name it whatever. Go to EQ APO and in the upper left corner choose open(1.), navigate to this text file and voilà, you have just enabled that EQ. If you want to fine tune the config you can use the green arrow button(2.) to open the filters in a new tab, edit them from within the EQ APO or add new ones.

Yep definitely not on. Change the "start from" option from bottom left to "current file"? Re-check the "instant mode"?

I'm not exactly sure why it doesn't work outright. You could add a line to the config.txt which is located in the "config" folder in the EQ APO installation directory. Move the BASS.txt you just created to this same directory and then add this line to the config.txt:

Include: BASS.txt

Go to EQ APO, select "open" and select config.txt. The view should now be just an ON/OFF button of the BASS.txt EQ preset, pic related.

This is a handy way to store and switch your setups: link to them through the config -file.

It seems to have worked but my graph doesn't look as exaggerated as yours. I'm not sure how to explain this but sometimes when I mess around with this eq and start a fresh one the neutral starting graph is flatter looking than it should be? and I have no idea why. Usually theres a decent curve to begin with and sometimes it's a lot flatter than it should be. Maybe that's why it doesn't look as exaggerated as yours?

I don't own any cheap full sized headphones anymore but the takstar 2050's were my first good pair I ever bought and they were really good for the money, though I've heard they're made by someone else now and not as good anymore. I'm not sure.

In terms of iems I use the KZ ED9's and they're the best I've ever tried, and I've tried an £80 pair, and a £40 pair from the /g/ guide. Both of which were worse than the ED9's which cost around £8 from ali express. You can unscrew the nozzle and fit a 'bass boost' one to them, don't do that and you're good to go.
>>
Just got a pair of ATH-M40X. I've had a pair of Shure SRH440s for a long time though and I never really thought anything about them, they've just been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years. Recently I've read some pretty good things about them and was considering returning the ATs and just using the 440s.

OK, got 2 pairs of Philips SHP 9500, and when they first came they sounded muddy out of the box, connected them to burn in unit for the past 4-5 d. I know many don't believe in burn in, suggest "brain burn in" is responsible, but I didn't listen to these over the time so I wouldn't just acclimate to their sound and get to like it. Going to burn them in more, but they definitely changed character. They have become much more open, detailed, natural and more importantly way more musical than before. They still do have slightly recessed mids but the initial muddiness I didn't like seems to be gone (just a short listen, not my best gear, an iPod Mini into a Denon DA-10 that I'm also burning in), will connect it to my Pono later when I have some time (so far, Pono is the best player I've had in my possession, which includes i devices, Fiio X3, iBasso DX90, HTC One M8 phone, Samsung Ypp-whatever player).
Not a bad buy for the price at all IMO!

>>58916531
I don't like the schiit stack personally. I feel like the sound is too solid state-y for my taste. I prefer one of the entry level offerings from g-d audio, they really increase the soundstage and overall clarity of the sound compared to most schiit offerings.
>>
>>58916439
Very nice, I used to have this exact same setup. Don't listen to the guy shit talking your amp, in terms of sound it's exactly the same as the e10k and the o2, but it can't go as loud of course. It's a sexy little amp but I prefer my e10k.
>>
>>58916585
It's about sound quality. Your laptop onboard chip will power them just as well.

>>58916619
They are entry level as well but I consider them bare minimum. Personally I'd recommend tube amps for the AKGs.
>>
>>58916550
>105db SPL
I'm a totally different guy, but that's 105db SPL/V (sensitivity), which isn't the same as db SPL/mW (efficiency), which is the unit that most manufacturers use. The k702 is around 91db SPL/mW.
>>
>>58916656
Doesn't look that bad either way. Something an entry level like the e10k would do without issues.
>>
>people praising their shitty $50 mobile DAC
>>
>>58916640
Ah yes, I agree tube amps are definitely better for pretty much any serious open back games. You do need a trained ear to appreciate the distortion they introduce though, so they're not a good recommendation for somebody coming from entry level portable DAC/amp combos.
>>
>>58916585
None of the "same guys" but those specs are incomplete(or the 105 dB SPL is lacking a metric) and we need to know what is the Sabre 9018 able to output aswell. It's perfectly possible that it can if anon's requirements for power aren't excessive(heavy EQ or listening to music loud).

>>58916656
>105db SPL/V
Yes. Those AKGs are quite insensitive among headphones in general but nothing extreme.

Yeah, I guess the DAC is a sacrilege - after all, HiFi is supposed to cost an arm and a leg and have an impressive marketing campaign behind it.

Either way I'm quite content with the setup, since I feel like I'm more limited by the quality of the audio files at this point.

Audiophiles spend more on a proper amplifier + DAC combo than headphones because they are delusional idiots.
But you found this $50 chinese miracle that sounds just as well.
What a smart boy you are.
>>
>>58916793
The original production has a lot to do with quality but the format it is stored not so much. Modern audio codecs are very good at tricking our hearing even with heavily lossy encodes while maintaining transparency. There's nothing you can do for the production but it's very easy to find high quality files, even if the audio stored on them was poorly produced.
>>
>>58916822
It's about diminishing returns.

Also, that's more than one person you're quoting.

>>58916804

>>
>>58916240
Actually I've just tested it and it's not making a difference, this is really annoying.
>>
>>58916850
There's also a point of no returns which headphone amplifiers and DA-converters achieve very quickly, at least if the returns are measured by audible improvements and if you aren't using an extreme load like a K1000. I can think of many reasons why I would invest into a high quality audio gear but deluding myself into thinking the devices have some arcane properties isn't one. Amplification is simple, DA-conversion an entirely solved problem for audio reproduction purposes. Past a certain point there's nothing to "upgrade". A much more real and a bigger problems rely in the frequency magnitude spectrum, response consistency and stability(blatantly quoting that one nerdy anon here) as well as how headphones present a very unnatural stereo image that is disconnected from how music is produced.

You haven't set it up like I showed.

1. Open the config.txt in EQ APO. Open that file only.

2. Add the line
Include: BASS.txt

into the config.txt

3. Note that config.txt and BASS.txt must be in the config -directory, inside the EQ APO's installation directory.

4. It should look like mine in pic related.

5. Remove that weird sub bass boost you just did.

6. If nothing works, run the configurator.exe for your audio device again and rebboot. The configurator is in the installation directory of EQ APO.

Ignore my overly complex EQ preset but that is how you set it up. All the text files are inside the same config -folder which is located inside the installation directory of EQ APO. Yep, drinking whilst trying to set this up doesn't help either lol.

To compensate for the bass increase, the volume now has to lower in order not to clip. I now have to use my e10k on high gain whereas I never really needed to use it in the past. Is there anything that can help with this? I nearly bought the fulla 2 the other day but stopped myself. Would that amp solve this 'problem' in your opinion?

I do also use a midi keyboard which struggles to sound loud enough sometimes for my liking, I'm not sure if it's the program I use or my PC being funny at random times for no reason.
>>
>>58919410
Don't listen to that guy. 598 is a pretty good headphone. IMO the K612 is better and it doesn't cost that much more, but if you want a more "fun" sound and the styling doesn't make you vomit, the 598 is a fine choice.

If you can't drive your headphones loud enough, you need a more powerful amp plain and simple.
While Fulla 2 is more powerful than E10K, there's no reason to get another amp/DAC combo when E10K can be used only as a DAC with another amp.
Get an O2 or a Magni 2.

Headphones don't have a max volume. You can calculate the max volume they can produce if you know the output voltage if your source. Motherboards don't get measured properly, so it's impossible to find those values.
>>
>>58919671
>there's no reason to get another amp/DAC combo when E10K can be used only as a DAC with another amp.

Oh god, I used to own an o2 amp+dac and I sold it because it sounded exactly the same as my e10k. Obviously it could go a lot louder than my e10k but I don't need my e10k to be any louder unless I use an EQ.

I would much rather have a usb powered amp+dac and the fulla 2 fits that bill, it also has a lot of inputs. I'm pretty sure the fulla 2 is cheaper than the O2 or magni 2 in the UK. Would you strongly advise against the fulla 2 for any reason? My e10k full gain is loud enough using this EQ, but it's right at the edge. I don't need much more.
>>
>>58919821
>My e10k full gain is loud enough using this EQ, but it's right at the edge. I don't need much more.
Then you should disregard my post. There's no reason to get another amp if your E10K has got what it takes.

My Asus Vulcan cans just died (or rather, fell apart) and I'd like to buy a new pair of headphones. The Asus Vulcan ANC is a headset, but I don't need a mic now, so headphones will do. Just a note on the Asus Vulcans before I go on - the audio is superb, much better than I expected for the price. What I'm looking for is an upgrade, but this will be tough to match, due to the really good and balanced audio quality of the Asus set I've been using.

Looking for some closed cans to use at work to listen to music and make some calls.

Already have a boom pro so it'd be nice to have something that's compatible with it. For that reason I was leaning towards the Status Audio CB-1.

Also considering the M40x, since there's a chink boom pro you can get for them. My misgiving with that is that everyone says I'll need to get news pads which adds to expense.

HM5 might be what I want, but they'd require a modmic or something similar and I'm not too keen on the extra wire.

Any thoughts anon?

A bit of a repost from the last thread. Just looking for more options. Anons recommended a V-Moda M100, Custom One Pro and even a Fidelio X2.

I want a closed pair, with comfort as the top priority, either with stock memory foam velour pads or the ability to change them easily and a removable cable, so I can use it with a BoomPro. Budget is $200-300 for the headphones and amp if necessary and I can fit it under that amount. I'm coming from HyperX Clouds, so I also want something that sounds significantly better if possible, even though I'm mostly satisfied with them for the price.
>>
>>58923607
Probably something like the Momenmtum 2 over ear. They're super comfortable and the memory foam + leather combo is the best I've ever used. Super soft and comfy. Also extremely light so that helps a lot with the comfort

I pre-ordered the Echobox's new flagship, the Nomad N1. There's no actual release date available, although their customer response email said between end of Feb and March once production kicks up. >>

$100 off was to match the sale price at CANJAM NYC. They had a handful of production pieces there, and actually refunded the $100 off of the MSRP for those who had already preordered at full price.

I would never preorder a headphone, but their first model (The Finder X1) has become one of my favorites, so they get a pass (this time). If I didn't have full faith in them to deliver based on past products, I wouldn't have done it. If I get burned, well, caveat emptor. It's not like I can't afford to experiment every now and then.

>>
>>58924866
You're limited to like four or five models that aren't absolute dogshit and cost above 300 dollars.
Anything bellow will be garbage.
Also you need to carefully choose AAC or APTX support, since most BT headphones support one or the other. Changing from Android to iOS and vice versa will net you worse audio quality depending on your choice.
>>
>>58924902

Many times, yes. That's not to say that there aren't good sounding ones out there, but they aren't cheap. You may want to look into a bluetooth adapter for existing headphones, which can be a more effective workaround. I don't know any of the names/models off the top of my head, though, because I love to drown in cables.
>>
>>58924866
>pros/cons of wireless headphones?
What model? They are wireless, that's probably a pro for someone who is looking for a wireless headphone. Wireless requires a charging/batteries.

>>58924902
It isn't like that, you can't generalize it. You can get a very good quality over wireless connection but wireless circuitry often has some self noise so that's something you may notice in a quiet environment. The response isn't something wireless data transfer touched by on or limits.
>>
>>58924710
>Maybe a WS1100iS would be better for that?
Could be, don't any experience with them though. I'd order from a place with a nice return policy though, as a lot of headphones that have 'bass' in their name tend to be on the muddy side of things.

I'm importing from Amazon, so returning probably isn't possible or is too much trouble to do so. I've been reading a bit about them since that post, and from what I could gather, people say the bass is pretty clean and punchy instead of muddy. I also really like the price point it is right now, at $230 on Amazon. Not sure why there are two versions though, the ATH-WS1100 and the ATH-WS1100iS. I like almost everything on the MSR7, but reviews says the bass isn't that great.

Does anyone here own or have tried the WS1100, and if possible can confirm that it uses a standard 3.5 jack?
>>

Ah, good luck with your purchase then, if you decide to get the WS1100.

The difference between the two versions seems to be that the iS has the inline mobile controls/mic TRRS cable, while the regular non-iS has a standard TRS cable.

The product page of the ws1100is shows a non-proprietary cable.
>>

I just noticed that after opening both products. Thanks anons. I'm not going to be using the cable anyway, since I plan on plugging a BoomPro there, but it might still be useful if I decide to use it with my phone.

Still would like some more opinions before buying it, but right now it seems like the best closed pair with a removable cable and with a either bassy or v-shaped sound. The V-Moda M-100 is my second option, but I don't like how it looks that much. I was considering a DT770, but I'd rather not use a ModMic if possible.

Might be worth to look into the newer offerings by Sennheiser or Audio Technica to see if they're better.
Bose are pretty garbage and only known for their ANC, which once other companies start to match it they will be worthless

Or is the difference in quality not going to be noticeable without a DAC (I mainly plan on playing 320 kbps from my phone)

The HD700 has treble rape. It will not sound anything like the much more laid back and even sounding hd598.

I suggest the hd600/650 or if you can afford it 800 s. They will sound closer to the hd 598, but more detailed etc. etc.

>>
>>58925095
skip 700, people that like the other "good" sennheisers don't like the 700. Either get 600/650 or 800s, no inbetweens

consider 400i
>>
>>58926008
Something with similar response. It's quite heavily diffuse field equalized. Maybe HD 600? You are going to need EQ to match it regardless of which headphone you pick and I think even the ER-4SR can be made better by some equalization. Slight sub bass boost and raise the 8 KHz notch are the key areas where they fall short even if they do sound quite amazing on their own.

If I want the HD650 mids and highs, but the K712s lows, should I get something else or just EQ it?

The K712s probably have my favorite bass out of every can that I've listened to. Very "fast", punchy, in your face, no "boomy" sound. The drums sound real and have lots of impact. Everything goes to shit after that region (especially the very uneven, spiky treble) so that's why I returned it. Tried EQing it but I never managed to get the treble and lows mids right. It's a very fatiguing headphone no matter what.

Got my self a pair of HD650 and everything except the bass is fantastic. I can finally listen to aggressive music with lots of cymbals, or treble in general, and not have my ears bleeding. The low mids don't give me headaches either. The issue is definitely the tame, very "slow", very relaxed bass. Good for listenting to background music, bad for when you wanna headbang.

To compensate I use this very simply low shelf EQ but, while it certainly helps, I feel like it's maybe missing something? Listening to Daft Punk is now much better but EQing mostly just added some boom and not the "snap" that I miss from the 712s.

Any suggestions? (ignore the device, I have an e10k at home)
>>
>>58927046
I would start by centering the shelf you made lower(for example @ 60 Hz) and using more gain. Then making a broad peaking filter(for example -3 dB @ 170 Hz Q 0.5) to remove the excess warmth of the HD 650's response. Maybe you can achieve something better than what the stock K712 sounds with EQ? It's the tool for it.

>>
>>58927182
Looks better. If it sounds too thumpy, you can further lower the shelf centering frequency and or lower gain in the shelf. People often consider bass response "fast" when you have flat response which falls down in the lowest two octaves, after 40 Hz or so.

Hey anon, just a Q, how's the sound leakage on the SHP?
>>

Are you planning on using them outside or exclusively at home?
>>
>>58927740
Poor leakage. These headphones are quite loud and leak a lot. The significant portion of the leakage is between 300Hz and 20KHz, which is a very broad range. The overall level of the leakage is also quite high. The leakage out of these headphones will be loud and comprehensible.

For closed, realistically It won't happen unless you move onto stuff like THX00's and that tier of headphones. [even though the X00's are hardly closed] Even DT 770's or COPs aren't a major upgrade by any means. M100's hardly are either. The Clouds aren't actually bad in the first place. They're fairly competitive with HM5's/XPT-100's, and M40x.

Though if you move to open headphones like the X2, you should be able to get a fair bit out of em in comparison to clouds.
>>
>>58925784
Until you get up into crazy estat tier, buy headphones for their sound, not their transducer type.

Either way, the PM3's are quite good. They're a warmer more portable headphone. They don't need additional amping.

You're moving goalposts now. 5 times more than 30 is $150. Even your lower estimate would still be $120
And which EVO? The 681 EVO? 770's are better.

DT 770's fit into $150, and are far better. Hell, I'd even take M50x and some pads as their low end isnt nearly as muddy, and their midrange is better.

Depends on your tonal preference. 650's are a lot better imo, though you have to fix the clamp, and they need a decent amp to sound their 'best'.

>You just never experienced the results because you're too autistic to see it through to the end.
Nah. I just look at objective measurements and relize there's no difference
>>
>>58929356
Gamer headsets are shit value for the money. Even the clouds.

I suggest Sennheiser HD598se. You can get them quite cheap @ sales.
>>
>>58929348

You can run those off a basic cheap DAC or even your soundcard and they will be fine. You will have to run 650s through a headphone amp + dac combo, so they are not comparable per se. Both will sound nice paired to a good amp + dac combo, but the Fidelio is the only one that can do it without one.

So HD650s cost really like double their price cause you have to get the necessary accessories for them.

I had X2s and I believe they are the best for the money. I would probably choose a 650 over them if I had an option to buy a good dac + amp combo, but I didn't and so far the Fidelio has treated me well. It's actually so close to the 650 the differences are so small. The 650 probably objectively is better but that flimsy plastic frame and everything about them is just nasty...

Also, in this 3rd world shithole, we have an "audiophile" tax of sorts. Well-known brands such as Sennheiser and Audio-Technica are jacked-up to double or even triple the prices (180 USD for m40x's, and a staggering 275 USD for a pair of m50x's) so I'd highly appreciate it if I could evade this said tax.

Ok so I'm not a major sound autist like you people probably are, but I figured I'd get some opinions.

I got these (Phillips SHL3300 DJ) for around 55$, and I've been hearing they're outstanding for the price. They sound real nice and they were stupid cheap. From the few reviews I've seen they're apparently one of the best bang for your buck headphones.

Does smartphones moving to USB C for audio excite audiophiles? It means that headphone manufacturers can design their DACs to make the headphones sound exactly how they want them to.

I am not very knowledgeable about this stuff and never personally experienced the difference between the two. Since these headphones are meant to be used at home mostly and there aren't many noises around, it's no big deal if they're open. Since they're gonna be used not only for music listening & music making but also for gaming, I imagine the soundstage is important.
>Comfort level
I prefer comfy but I never use them for more than ~2 hours at a time without break so if it's comfortability vs superior sound quality, I'm going for sound.
>Sound signature
Neutral as possible. I want that shit to play things just like they were recorded.
>>Past headphones
Some incredibly shitty Icon headphones - the "HP-280". I'm currently using them because my second pair of headphones, whose name I forget right now, was some chinkshit thing from /csg/ they they recommend often. They were good but one channel just stopped working one day and I couldn't fix it.

Now I already read up a bit, and I did narrow it down to three likely options.
1. Audio Technica ATH-M40x
2. Shure SRH440
3. Grado SR80E
I read that the M40x have a virtually nonexistent soundstage, which is a bummer because I also hear they sound great.
I read that the Shure has shoddy build quality and are uncomfortable but otherwise sound great and have a decent 'soundstage' for closed headphones.
I read that the Grado SR80E are about equal to the Shure except they're open rather than closed.
Since selection is fairly limited in Israel it would be best for me to get one of these, but if there's some notably superior product for my needs at this price range I'm very much interested in hearing.
Thanks in advance to those who read and can help.
