Normally I wouldn't do this, and I'm sure you've heard it a million times before.

Basically some of my icons, desktop and original location, are broken. I get that default Windows icon. The white box with

another window in it. Only some of them. But only on a separate drive that all the icons came from. Now I did recently

swap C drives, swapped my 120gb SSD with a 250gb SSD, and I believe I turned the computer of mine on without having the

separate drive plugged in.(Took the power cable out to prevent me from making any dumb mistakes.)

Now these icons won't show. And maybe my Google-Fu is crap because I have already tried multiple things. Including deleted

that Iconcache whatever in App Local. Tried diskcleanup too. Nothing. Still fucking broken. And it pisses me off.

Pretty only the icons that were on my desktop. I tried going back and just making new shortcuts, changing the icons in properties, changing drive letters, but nothing. All did fucking nothing.

Anything short of me reinstalling fucking Windows, what can I do?

I have a weird problem.

I have a laptop running Linux and a raspberry pi being used as a cheap home server. I have qbittorrent installed on both. When I torrent a file through the server (accessible from laptop browser with password), it downloads fine, but for some reason, I'm not able to upload or download anything from my laptop's qbittorrent client. It gives me the same problem with Transmission on my laptop. Nothing starts on there and isn't able to find any seeders or leechers for torrents that are apparently active. Both devices are on the same network.

What should I do or look for to fix this? I don't know if another torrent client would fix this if two of them won't work. I'm also not sure what settings I would need to mess with to make it work.

>>
alright, I posted this over at TomsHardware, but nobody fucking helped. So maybe you guys can.

tl;dr: my PC is somehow killing my power supplies and i have no idea why, does anyone know what could cause this?

I was having issues with my pc performing hard shut downs/reboots (similar to what looked like a power outage) when I played graphically intense games (lowering the graphics worked on some games). After some research deduced it was my PSU, got a new one through warranty and that fixed the issue. For a couple of weeks. For example, Paragon would shut down my PC in the main menu, but with the new PSU I was able to play for multiple hours on max graphics with no shut downs. And it's slowly degrading again, I've already turned graphics down to medium on most games.
It may be coincidence, but the first instance of this happening (on both power supplies) was with Overwatch. And I have heard that Overwatch doesn't work well with overclocked cards, so that's kind of where my hypothesis is at, but it's hard for me to believe it could cause permanent damage to a PSU that easily.

GPU is factory overclocked if that helps (MSI gtx 980ti gaming 6g)
PSU is more than powerful enough (EVGA Supernova 750W G1)
>>
>>58896260
I'll give it a try, thanks for the response anon.
>>
>>58896304
I should also mention that my PC ran perfectly fine for months. I built it last April, and it only started fucking around like this in about December.

>>
>>58896304
Are you using a good power strip?

If you could get your hands on a used uninterruptible power supply just for the conditioning maybe?

Just some thoughts. It sounds like an outside issue unless you are running a shoddy or under powered PSU or have driving lots of external high current devices.

>>58896356
I was going directly into the wall. It could be a faulty or damaged outlet though, that's an idea that's recently been running through my head.

The town I live in has awful infrastructure apparently and there have been relatively frequent power outages during storms, but not since I've got my new PSU. However if the outlet itself was somehow damaged that could probably fry a new PSU as well. If that's possible, I don't know much about that sort of thing.
>>
>>58896372
Either the 4gb or 8gb armor.

I have the 4gb and really like it but I'm considering passing this a long to a my friend for a few bucks for the 8gb. Looking at the resident evil 7 benches showed how much vram is starting to move past the 4gb barrier

But thats all wishes and nuts, the 4gb hasn't let me down yet.
>>
>>58896402
Power can be really shady even if there are no apparent problems. From brownouts to voltage fluctuations to god knows what else.

Get a decent power strip for surge or consider something more robust used.

But I caution you I am just throwing out educated guesses. I don't want ya spending money you don't have but if you do have it.... surge protection and ideally conditioned power is nice to have.

I have a strange problem if anyone with knowledge on wifi networks could help?

I had been having problems with my wifi signal lately (not getting a strong signal at the other end of my house but only at certain times of the day) so I downloaded meraki wifi stumbler on my phone to see which channels surrounding wifi networks were using. I noticed another network nearby on the same channel as mine so I changed mine to an unused channel hoping it would improve things. Checked it again later and the other network was now on the same channel as mine again. I changed the channel a second time and this time watched the wifi analyser app and sure enough a few seconds after I saved the router settings the other network changed to the same channel as mine. Any idea what could be going on?
>>
>>58897061
Hmm I blocked the other network's MAC address in my router settings and now it's no longer auto joining the same wifi channel as me. Odd. I'd still be interested in hearing an explanation if anyone knows what was going on.

A lot of CPE will migrate channel to match channels of other access points near it, in the mistaken belief that that's easier than doing spectrum analysis and choosing a channel with the lowest noise floor, because they don't impliment the proper algorithms to accomplish this (because good algorithms are expensive and CPE is designed with every cost-cutting meassure in the world, to the point that they don't even cost enough that it's worth it for the company supplying them to keep the firmware up-to-date; which indidentally is how you get Mirai and other similar botnets). There's nothing you can do.

is it safe to shrink boot partition? I set it for too much
>>
>>58897817
If your tool also shrinks the filesystem in the partition, then sure.
>>
>>58897795
Sometimes you don't get a good burn if you go too fast.
So it's good to be able to burn at a slower speed.
>>
>>58896949
Exactly, yaourt invokes, just as pacur, pacman.

You might have heard that yaourt is potentially insecure, as it sources PKGBUILDs (which are valid bash scripts) BEFORE it asks you to take a look at them.

IMO pacaur is even better, because it will install all dependencies at once and not one after the other. Pacaur also displays diffs of PKGBUILDs as you upgrade AUR packages.
>>
>>58897844
So I should always burn at low speeds?
Especially things like ISOs?
>>
What's the difference between Adblock plus, ublock, and noscript.

Also, is noscript hard to use?
>>
>>58897962
It depends on the quality of the disc.
If your first burn doesn't work, try a slower speed for your second.
>>
I want something like thunderbird or compatible with thunderbird addons but more lightweight, on fedora linux
>>
>>58897795
either;
- the media you're using only supports a lower speed
- the source you're using isn't fast enough for a full speed burn (unlikely nowadays)
- the player you intend to use the dvd on is not designed for recordables or is otherwise low quality, and the slight improvement in readability from burning slower is required
>>

adblock plus and ublock origin use the same lists, I think.
adblock plus allows "acceptable ads", unless you disable it.
I get the impression that "acceptable ads" are whatever adblock plus received payment for.

noscript blocks javascript and allows you things on on a site-by-site basis.
It also does a bunch of stuff like xss blocking and clearclick stuff.

of course

if you want to make it less public, either;
a. put authentication on it, so people need to use a username/password to see anything
b. whitelist the IPs of people who want to connect (more thorough, but requires you get your friend to tell you their external IP, which is a little bit less convinient, not to mention their IP may be dynamic, meaning it changes every so often)

If physical access to the switch is restricted, and the interface to manage the switch is password protected, it's secure enough for at home. Assuming there is one switch to one room not one switch for the whole building.
>Getting neighbor's notifications
This means you share a network and the chromecast device is on the same network as your phone.
There is no way to manage which devices will recieve a notification from chromecast, so you'll need to disable it's notifications on your phone.

I need a good PCI/PCI E wireless card that will work on Windows 10.

Due to change in internet setup, I could no longer get an ethernet cable to my PC and had to install a wireless card. We got a TP-Link TL-WDN4800 off the shelf knowing I could install an Atheros AR938 driver to make it work.

It's functional but this piece of shit can only get 2Mbps when my other devices get 35Mbps. It is getting the same signal strength as my laptop, my android phone, etc.

Any recommended wireless cards to buy?
>>
I am not good at converting linux commands for windows. I'm using SoX to convert 24 bit Flac to 16 bit, and was interested in creating MP3 files also. I think the command for that is -c 320. The file still comes out as a .flac though. I think I need the filename to be something other than %%A...

This converts a 24-bit 88.2 kHz file to 16-bit 44.1 kHz:
FOR %%A IN (%*) DO sox %%A -b 16 "converted/%%~nxA" rate -v -L 44100 dither

This is an example (using wav instead of mp3) of something you can't run on Windows thanks to $ and maybe even quotation marks vs apostrophes
$ for f in *.flac; do sox "$f" -t wav -r 16000 -s -c 1 "${f%.flac}.wav"

How do I dumb this down, based on the 24 bit converter, so SoX spits out a goddamn .mp3 file instead of a .flac

I think the filename is my main concern
>>
>>58901012
Disregard, looked into this further and it's apparent that my 2Mbps is due to accidentally installing the card to a PCIEX1 slot, which is a slow as fuck slot compared to the PCIEX16 port my machine should have.

That depends entirely on your hearing and the actual equipment you'll be listening on.

On my desktop I try to have 1:1 copies of the source in FLAC, but on my phone I'm perfectly fine encoding everything to ogg with -q5 (technically 160kbps variable but mp3@160kbps has absolutely nothing on it) since It's not I'm going to lug around expensive audio equipment just do enjoy some bluegrass on a noisy bus.

Yeah, sorry, I heard of that before, too. I researched a lot on batteries before getting my first laptop since I would be using it as a PC, battery being removed most of the time, and I read that:

-0% charge in practice is really a little higher, since a literal 0% charge is extremely detrimental to batteries, so on a user level the PC shuts down slightly above that
- to preserve battery life, a battery should be kept between 40 and 60% charge when not in use for extended periods of time

But it would just be an overnight thing, for me. It's not like I plan to charge 100% and keep it there for months/ years. Cheers.

Its very hard for me to adjust to changes. When I was switching from XP to 7, I kept drive with XP plugged in and ocasionally ran it. Plus, there are still applications that run better on 7 than on 10.

10 appears alien and cold, last time I felt that was when I tried running Mint and OpenSUSE. When I booted 7 back (and skipped its urges to scan all drives for some reason) I felt comfortable again.

You can start laughing at me now.

>>
>>58902574
I can imagine. I was forced to switch from Windows 7 to 8.1 on a laptop I had (drivers wouldnt work on 7) and I hated it.

Took quite some time to get used to it.

The transition from 8.1 to 10 wasn't that bad, because it's pretty similar, and I use modifications to start menu and file explorer anyway.

Best of luck
>>
>>58902574
Nah, I'm in the same boat. First and foremost the changes seem left field and not of logical progression for expedience, and telemetry not being 100% capable of being disabled is the argument I raise for not upgrading so as not to be bullied for "muh feels."

You'll get a step plan you'll have to follow which has to work perfectly.
Sometimes breaking the software doesn't matter if you do it in an abstract way.
Also you'll have no access to the source code most of the time, so you'll have to hope that they implemented proper logging.

Switching from 8.1 to 10 is indeed rather easy (I had that with my laptop). But I was using same WIn 7 installation on desktop for 6 years straight, without reinstallations or anything. I had small training with new PC I received at work around May last year, that had Win 10 Pro, but still.

As for telemetry and shit, it makes it easier that I have Education version, aka tweaked Enterprise that dont have Cortana (and she cannot be re-enabled) or "apps suggestions" that also can actually reduce telemetry packages to simple pings about PC existence and nothing more.

Have the RX 480 here, Crimson drivers won't install at all, always resulting at a computer freeze during the "Installing AMD Display Adapter" phase...

I was happily running Crimson 16.12.2 and it suggested to update to 17.1.2. Got a freeze during uninstall. Got AMD cleanup utility but it froze too. Worked in safe mode, though. Downloaded 17.1.2 again for Windows 10 x64 for RX 400 series, same thing. Decided to try the version I had, 16.12.2, clean install, freezing at the same spot as well. I also tried Guru 3D display driver uninstaller, which works but driver installation will crash pc either way.

Can't install in safe mode because it says that driver is unsigned, and after disabling signature verification, it says that the hardware detection driver cannot start so it fails.

I'm stuck without GPU drivers any way I try. Any suggestions?

You mean less bloatware. No Cortana and no ads. It doesnt contain more apps by default than what you already have in other editions.

Will approaches to software development like Agile last for the future or is it a waste of time training in them for them to become extinct?

I am from the UK and studied history, not the most direct for finding a job, I know. I worked as a lobbyist for a while but the UK government runs a graduate scheme where they take people from any background and pay them good money to get into coding and software development as well as project management.

Some of the work involves learning to code but it's largely about being a scrum manager and agile aficiando alongside things like Kanban.

You swap jobs every six months for a few years before specialising, so job titles include agile manager, scrum manager, user researcher, business analyst etc.

I was just wondering if agile sounds like something that could lead to a long and fruitful career or if it's something likely to be outdated in ten years or so.

I know absolutely nothing about tech other than what a average person on the street would.

Any input appreciated.

>Just what is gpg?
It's GNU's version of OpenPGP which is a version of PGP which was a fairly simple way to encrypt/decrypt messages.

>I'm totally lost as to what it's purpose is
You'd use it to make sure messages are sent over the internet securely and can also use it to verify messages are coming from the person you expect they're coming from. Anytime you use HTTPS you're using something similar to positively identify the site you're on and encrypt traffic

Here's a quickstart guide

Edu if you want normal desktop OS. Server if you want more control over components and communications. Server, naturally, wont receive "content updates" like Edu will (LTSB wont either, unles you would download new installation iso, by the way).

Both have similar level of control over how they connect with MS servers.

Dear /sqt/.

I ran into problem in form of "INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE" error during upgrade to build 1607 aka Anniversary Update for Win 10 Edu

Edu was installed on empty SSD with drive with 7 and few others being plugged in. Win 10 didnt create new "System Reserved" partition on SSD during installation and appears to be using Win 7 existing one. The installator was for build 1511, so it quickly detected update to build 1607. However, during the "preparing update" phase, when it reach 25% and perform first restart, it drops BSOD with said error, roll back to previous build and boot normally.

Searching DuckDuck only shows either threads without replies, MS threads with just "we work on it" replies and very basic and kinda annoying suggestions everyone does in case of BSODs anyway (unplug new devices, update drivers, etc).

Anybody ran into such case and know how to fix it?

ok guys so omegle has a shit bot detection system
basically after a certain amount of chats in a certain time frame, it will detect you as a bot and make you solve a captcha after each chat
the problem is 75% of users are horny dudes who will disconnect on you in 2 seconds, so you inevitably have to start solving captchas even if you're just a regular user
which makes the site unusable because now you have to solve a captcha every 2 seconds
how would one get around this?
