I have played many of my Steam games on GNU/Linux and gotten subpar performance in all of them except Plague Inc. and Terraria. Differences are huge, for CSGO I got 40 FPS on GNU/Linux and 270 FPS on Windows; of the list I tried KF and the difference was also over 150 FPS. I didn't even bother with any Borderlands. GNU/Linux is shit for games, stop deluding yourself.

All kinds of backwards compatibility on windows is broken now. Windows 10 won't even load the games I want to play, so I don't see how GNU/Linux could possibly be any worse. Windows is also botnet, has two settings applications, and eats RAM like an African kid at a buffet.

The two GPU/setting up for VGA passthrough thing isn't as bad as it sounds on paper.

>just need a semi-modern motherboard and decent CPU
>for some reason a few modern ones aren't compatible but a lot are
>one of the GPUs can be integrated, so if you have a dedicated you're likely good to go

Like yeah, if you're the part of /g/ that only uses Linux because it's $0 and you own an 8 year old $200 corporate laptop maybe you're out of luck but most people should be able to work it out. No one says the parts have to be expensive.

I'm curious, what do you do in this game?
>>
I thought about doing the GPU passthrough thing, but then I remembered that why would I bother with linux when all I do on my personal computer is browse the web and play games.

This is just tinkering for the sake of tinkering imo. If you're already running linux, then fine, but if you're primarily on windows why bother going through all this?

I can see this being useful for HTPC setups that rely on steam in-home streaming though, leaving the windows VM on in the background for that and still being able to use the linux part of the machine whilst someone else is using the windows VM.

Isn't 3 works in wine 2.1?
I could run it in wine-staging 2.0 but there were in-game artifacts. And they implemented a lot of staff that were required by W3 in 2.1
>>
>>58882628
It would be for people who mainly use or want to switch to Linux but still want to play games. The entire point is that they would still do everything that isn't a game, including browsing the web, on Linux. Furthermore, virtual machines have incredible security and utility benefits like snapshots and virtualization itself. It's hugely desirable compared to inconveniences such as dual booting or owning two computers and doubling the hardware cost, syncing the storage data, etc. When you dual boot, it's not just about having to deal with a 30 second reboot every time you vaguely feel like doing something, after which you may have lost your motivation to do it, as weak as that sounds. It's also about not having to stop what you're doing, close that browser and those pages you're reading, that file you're working on, and instead be able to switch to "another computer" without actually physically switching to one. It saves physical space and presence in the real world too.

In the more practical sense, as a bare minimum, it gives you the safety, security and relative lack of spying of Linux with the functionality and pragmatism of Windows. Anything extra is just a bonus to most people.

yeah, and all of them outside half a dozen valve games that they port, because "we invested into steam os", autism simulators, and a bunch of feral ports, are shitty indie games(let's be honest, 99% of indie games are crap) i wouldn't touch with a pole.
Xcom and amnesia are pretty cool, though.

my main goal was to get rid of the 4 computers i had laying around. I'm down to 2 and if my motherboard had more than 16 fucking PCIe lanes I would be down to 1.

now that i know it's limitations i'm not even that interested in passthrough. the solution for me was to get a few pi3s and sprinkle around the house. i love them as web terminals
