Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price, or improve specs or build quality.

For me at least, it automatically adjusted the frequency, voltage and timings as soon as it could recognize the ram (I needed a bios update for XMP to work on that specific G Skill model, make sure you check your motherboards ram compatibility list if they have one on their website, not all ram just werks on original bios'es
>>
>>58873024
not blower style ones, at least none that i know of. the basic idea (pushing the heat out of the case) is good, but it's always done with loud af radial fans.
>>
>>58872729
I've been thinking about getting an AMD GPU, since my monitor supports freesync (wasn't the most important criteria when I bought it). But I have really terrivle experience with my last AMD GPU (laptop GPU tho), are they better now?
>>
>>58873181
Non-blower cards assume you have a proper exhaust system in place on your case.
I mean yeah blowers are good for keeping the heat away from your motherboard, but they're terrible for actually cooling your GPU, and a proper exhaust solves the radial-fan problem of internal heat
Blowers are used in small form factor cases where there isn't perfect airflow or adequate exhaust, but with proper airflow and exhaust, radial fans win 100% of the tine

>>58873208
They perform better. I'm sure the build quality is better than years-old laptop radeons but I can't say myself
But 1440p AND high fps is tough to do, you essentially need a 1070
>>
>>58872772
>>58872971
Negative air pressure sucks in dust from every nook and crany in the case. Its not about case temps, its about not having dust spots on every panel in the case.
>>
>>58873254

and my stepmoms old IBM desktop only had an exhaust fan and zero dust after almost a decade of use.
>>
>>58873254

>blowers are good for keeping the heat away from your motherboard, but they're terrible for actually cooling your GPU
if that is true, why are more or less all good aftermarket CPU coolers (axial) blower style?
I'm not asking for xbox-huge radial fans here, what i want is a setup with large axial fans in a blower setup, like the top half of the pic (CPU airflow). DVI and some DP ports can be put in one slot, the other 3 can be exhaust.

>>58873466
You mean vertical axial fans?
There is no good radial blower cooler for a CPU, and the GPU radial blowers aren't as good as full heatsinks with axial fans
And vertical axial fans on a GPU would perk better but really doesn't offer much advantage over horizontal axial fans for how much space it would take away
Nothing is stopping you from tying a CPU cooler to a GPU

I have a Corsair 100R silent edition case and it says: The Corsair 100R Silent ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 414mm long, but video cards over 275mm may block drive bays. Since the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card is 280mm long, some drive bays may not be usable.

I'm using all of my drive bays, can this card fit or should I go for the 2 fan version?

Those are vertically-positioned axial (the fan blows air through the fan, parallel to the axle) fans.
"Blower" implies both a radial (the fan sucks in air and then blows it sideways radially) fan and a shroud isolating the heatsink and airflow from the case of the case
>>
>>58873850
>>58873896
Vocabulary aside, you're right. A vertical heatsink would cool a GPU much better than the normal horizontal ones, but that would take up at least 120mm of PCIe slots, plus you'd have to get a horizontal heatspreader anyways to deal with the VRMs getting hot on the card
I mean it's possible, but *most* GPU coolers do well enough already and a watercooling loop is a much better and more aesthetic way to handle an overheating card

Modded Fallout 4 and Skyrim are notoriously memory hungry, even at 1080p. Those modpacks quaddruple the memory footprint of every texture. There is generally no optimization because a lot of the modders are just hobbyists and have no idea what they're doing. Even the smallest shit gets an overkill texel density and the texture maps are often badly compressed. They'll make giant normal maps even though you can't tell the difference etc. They'll do this for all kinds of textures like translucency, roughness maps and so on, even though it has virtually no impact on visual quality but a massive impact on memory usage.

Once that memory is full you're gonna get stuttering and pop-in like crazy which will ruin your experience. FPS will also crash in areas where large amounts of new textures are loaded while the memory is full.

The GPU does 85% of the work, always put every last cent into the GPU when doing a budget gaming rig. Get an RX480 8GB. Buy 2x 4GB system memory so that you can use them in dual-channel, then later when you have the money just buy another set of 2x 4GB if needed. Don't use a single 8 GB stick because you're never gonna upgrade to 32 GB. Get that dual channel action going with 2x 4GB.

My old PC had a GTX780 3GB and a 1080p monitor. Modded Skyrim was possible but it will start to lag with ENB and heavy high-res texture packs. VRAM was totally full. FPS 35-60, unstable because of VRAM being full (again, heavily modded). Fallout 4 unmodded was playable 50-60 FPS with most settings topped out except shadows. VRAM was again capped out (this time without any mods at all) There's no doubt that the RX480 8 GB will be able to store all that texture goodness while maintaining solid performance, I think 4GB won't be enough for FO4 modded.

That still leaves the fact that your top fans are working against the natural flow of hot air
Generally it's a good idea to have front-bottom intakes and top-rear exhausts with a fairly balanced intake/exhaust ratio (with a little more fanpower on the intake side for positive pressure to reduce dust)
Flipping the top is what I would do but I also have two less fans than you and a smaller case
>>
>>58873928
I'd flip the top ones, will reduce dust intake significantly and there's generally a lot of space above the PC for warm air to flow upwards, away from the surrounding area of the PC. The back of the PC usually faces a wall, creating a pocket of heat behind it.
>>

Move the CPU fan onto the other side if you can mount it to blow the same direction, it's better to have the heatsink sandwiched between a push-fan and pull-fan instead of just having two pull-fans do all the work after the air already goes through the radiator

The top fan (which is exhaust) is much dustier than my front or back fans. The PSU should be the dustier part but it's fans-off most of the time so it can't suck up the dust under the PC very often

concerning the dust comments. does it matter if my case has filtration methods built into it?
>>

>So you mean something like this that covers all of the heated parts on a GPU and spreads them across a giant heatsink with fans on it?
Yes, exactly this.

>>58874235
>I mean it is a giant heatsink on top of a GPU, of course it'll stay cool
That's the whole point of cooling, keeping things cool. What's so dumb about it?
>But I mean just look at that thing
Its inside a case next to my desk. I don't want to look at it, i want to use it and preferably not hear it, even if it's some 250W flagship card.

>watercooling
That's what i'm currently doing, but it's more expensive and requires more service

with a 1080, you will always be able to get 60fps, even at 4k (except for Witcher 3 with hairworks)

a 1070 can get 60fps on almost everything, except at 4k.
>>
>>58874382
You should have dust filters on every single one of your intakes, this isn't a "feature" anymore it's basic case-making competence
Exhaust should be as unrestricted as possible unless you use it in an unusually dusty environment
>>

So I'm building a PC. My issue is my PC has no OS yet and I have it connected to my tv via VGA but my tv is getting no signal. Do I need to have it connected to an actual monitor or something until I get an OS on it?

Doesn't matter what you do, dust is gonna get on the fans, they move too fast so there's a layer of air above the surface of the blades that barely moves meaning dust can settle on it. Only thing that's gonna prevent dust is a combination of filters and basically just making sure the room you use it in is actually fucking clean. Dust isn't a problem if you're not a lazy faggot
>>
>>58874491

yes you need an OS. the TV isn't getting signal because the PC isn't sending out a signal.
>>
>>58874518
How do I go about putting an OS on with no display? I have Ubuntu on a bootable thumb drive but if I can't see the bios...
>>
>>58874504
Well I'm talking about case dust, and that having the top open and exposed (or even worse, exposed AND sucking things in) lets significantly more dust in than an equivalent vent on the side or front
>>

what sort of motherboard is it? and what sort of GPU are you using?

Not really a build question, but what soc or small form factor htpc is recommended as torrent/media Maschine, preferably always on. Building a dedicated freenas rig seems to be Quote extensive, and using old pc parts would make it too power hungry for an always in device.

Looking to build a cheap PC to replace my mom's old and dying Athlon XP+ machine.

She uses it for photo organizing, accessing our family message boards and chats, very light video editing (it takes forever to render a 5 minute 720p video, so she's learned how to output SD but continues to record in HD for future remastering). She has mixed results with skyping family members. Google hangouts only ever works if she resets the computer first and then it tends to lock up after she's done. She does almost no gaming but has been given some steam games like Zuma and a few other extremely light games that barely run on her computer, so she never plays them.

I'm on limited income from disability. Unable to work right now because some drunk fuck decided I didn't need the use of my legs for several months, so my budget for this is around $100. Less is ideal. It's really all I can spare at the moment and it's taken me a couple months to save that.

Any suggestions /g/?

Am I missing anything significant or are the Phanteks P400S and Fractal Define C practically the same case?

Both have:
>Sound dampening foam
>Front/top/PSU dust filters
>Top covers with both of the above
>2x 3.5" and 2.5"
>2x 120mm fans
>PSU shroud

The only notable features I can spot easily are the larger depth and included fan controller on the P400S.

There's only a $5-10 difference between the two in my area based on the model, the P400S being overall cheaper so I'm leaning towards that for the moment. Should I go for it?
>>

Should I consider building a mini-ITX config?

It will be used for general gaming and shitposting. Gigabyte's mini-ITX 1070 looks nice as well (even though looks are not really a factor to me), and it would be slightly cheaper here overall than a full sized build.

Con is that a possible GPU replacement will be difficult. It would be my first build and I'm a bit afraid because of the smaller case (less room, more ways to fuck up - at least that's what I think)

What do you guys think? Should I just go for an ATX one for more upgrade potential later?

3. BitFenix Whisper M 80 Plus Gold Netzteil, modular - 650 Watt

in the United States. go look at the australian price now.

if it's not for gaming, then you could get a Skylake i5, ddr4-2400 RAM, a traditional heatsink, a Z170 motherboard, and an ITX case instead of mid-ATX

Question about Asus Z270 Mobos

How different is the Z270K from the Z270E? Is the "GAMING" really worth it? I don't plan on anything insane like a $3000 build, just overclocking with 16-32gb of 3000mhz DDR4, and one SSD, one/two HDD's. Would it be worth the extra money for the different board? Also, I'm not two years old, RGB is not a concern for me. If anything, I'll buy LED Strips.

Is the onboard sound any different?

I want to build a 4k 60FPS Mini-ITX box for my entertainment center. I know it will involve some form of AMD 8-core/Intel 4 core CPU + a GTX 1080, but I don't know anything about good cases just big enough to fit a 1080 and storage options (been reading about this M.2 thing but it's confusing).

Also will Ryzen chips allow for 4k Netflix streaming? My TVs built in app only does 1080p and customer service suggested buying a Roku TV or Chromecast. I'd like to kill 2 birds with one stone.

For audio specifically, Macbook Pro is your a given. If you don't plan on moving around your pc, I'd make it a hackintosh so that you still can have some fun with it, in case it's not solely dedicated to recording. Don't get the newest Macbook Pro though, no need for touchbar, honestly ruins it for me, like at least leave the function keys too. Hackintoshes don't support GTX 1000's series cards atm, but you could just use onboard gpu for Mac OS, or get a 900's series if that's what you want. Macbook Pro is portable, and very convenient, just weak. Hackintosh is not portable, at all, but you at least have potential. However, with Hackintosh, you may be limited from certain features as the OS is a cracked version. So basically,
Macbook Pro
>portable is gud
>no upgrade path, no other use (good screen for porn tho)
>touchbar is fail

Hackintosh
>not portable, unless you make it tiny (don't)
>upgradable, more than one use
>cracked OS, kind if limited to new shit.
>>
>>58878674
Anon dont buy yet though. Wait until a week after Ryzen comes out. Intel will lower their prices, and hopefully maybe Nvidia too
>>
>>58878729
Depends on your motherboard. But even my cheapo MSI Z170-A PRO had fan voltage control.
>>
>>58878686

literally what? You only need 12 GB or higher if you are using your PC for editing and stuff. Gaming requires 8 GB. Anything else is overkill.

>>
>>58878905
Basically as expensive as any other fans. Im not going to waste 89 cents more just to please you noctua loving fags
>>
A little off topic.

I've been running an i5 2500K for 6 years. Recently I've noticed weird numbers in HWMonitor about the clock speed, the minimum clock will fall way below 1.6GHz, like 100MHz, 281MHz or sometimes only slightly below like 1586MHz. The CPU gets plenty of voltage (around 1.37V). Also I am not able to overclock it at all, I mean I can push it to 4.5GHz and play games just fine, but Prime95 will fail Blend tests almost instantly (less than 10 seconds) by shutting off the PC. RAM has been checked and is not faulty. PSU is a Seasonic Platinum 760W.

Should I go for a new CPU or try to get more power out of my i5? I've spent hours trying to to troubleshoot the issue. Motherboard is Asrock Z77M. I had a P8P67 before which did not have the Blend test problem (if I remember correctly).

here, if you go with a more square shape or atx shaped case, you could watercool and place a better cpu.
>>
>>58878905
>The black ones have brown corners
>The black ones run louder and are five bucks more expensive with no accessories
With the regular ones:
>They think they don't match with the rest of their parts (valid claim)
>They're children that automatically think brown = shit
>They have windows on their cases
Price isn't even really a con anymore since everyone's getting on the expensive fan train, and Noctua isn't even that expensive in comparison.
