IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is it true the low voltage cpu of the x240 matches the x230's in performance or is a chinaman trying to trick me again?

x230's i5 3320m still scores higher than the skylake 6200u but the integrated graphics on skylakes beats the hd 4000

What RAM upgrade did you guys get? My old x220 only has 4GB of memory and I'm upgrading that shit.

Whatever is of a reputable brand and works.

Go for the fast timings if you want an unnoticeable speed boost.

Hell, it really doesn't matter.
In my X230 I've got mixed DDR3 and DDR3L right now of different brands. No issues.

how to solve this

thinkpad T420

A 90 watt charger instead of the 65 watt one you're using

the problem is when using OSX the processor running full speed with turbo...

so not the charger problem

>other business laptops

Is it common for used E6400/E6410' s to have some wobble in lid hinges?

It wobbles a few degrees. Outside this amplitude, it feels stiffish as it should, just like on any thinkpad I've had.

I'm puzzled whether the wobble is in the hinges themselves, or have they perhaps become loose where they're bolted onto the lid. I guess in the latter case I should fix it asap, yet I'm not too eager to go ahead since removing the bezel seems a bit tricky.

Personally I can't stand doing any real work without real peripherals. Would highly recommend a docking station no matter what you buy.

The difference in horsepower between the '10 and '20 series is going to be noticeable. And I don't think the resolution between the two is going to make a significant difference in usability.

I also used it on my bed and blocked the fan intake and it ran so hot that it eventually blew the ccfl backlight inverter and some fuses and it wouldn't POST anymore.

Even before that, it stopped POSTing, so if I wanted to cold boot it, I had to get a can of compressed air and shoot it into the fan to pretend it was still working correctly to get past the POST.

Should I do this?
>>
>>58870557
No. Patches are more stylish
>>
>>58870557
Depends. Taping it over is kinda inconsequent. On a ThinkPad you have the green light that informs you if the webcam is on. If you don't trust the indicator LED you can of course tape it over. But if you don't want to be spied on, being watched should be your smallest concern. Just think about what information criminals could gain through the internal microphone. I'd be more worried about that. And if you decide to take out the microphone you might as well take out the speakers because technically these are microphones too.
>>

Yes, but only after you disable it in the BIOS

Probably because they want a laptop without a dog shit worthless junk TN display. Your photograph is of poor quality but despite that I can still clearly see the pathetic viewing angle on that display and horrible blue tint which is indicative of a bottom-tier TN panel with piteous black levels and contrast ratio.
>>
>>58873446
The blue tint is probably more related to the white balance of the camera being unable to balance the yellow light of the lamp with the blue light of the display and window.

Hmmmm... Ideal ThinkPad?
An X220 that has the latest hardware and is a bit thinner without sacrificing ports or durability.

Whitelists on Wi-Fi are totally pointless. You can bypass it with a USB adapter, and they don't whitelist anything else. like hard drives or batteries.

Didn't they give you a "Sorry we missed you" slip or something so you can just drive there and show them that and get it?
>>
>>58874006
why losing a usb port?

They do because they take FCC regulations too seriously. HP also does it. Dell did it too but I don't know if they still do this today.
>>
>>58871495
all i7 versions do.
>>
>>58874134
FCC only mandates that the laptop complies when shipped. Not that the customer cannot modify it afterward.

Whitelisting wifi cards is equivalent to prohibiting USB wifi cards from being installed.

Its definitely backlight bleed and unfortunately you cant really do anything about it other than change the panel out. Its caused by poor quality control when the display is manufactured. So my parents are letting me buy a laptop for college, up to the price of a macbook. I'm assuming 1700$ since that's the entry level cost of a macbook pro with the touchbar. My plan is to buy an X270 at launch with the fastest processer available, IPS 1080p screen, then add 16gb of RAM and a 1TB SSD soon as I get it. I know the T470 has thunderbolt 3 and the X270 doesn't, but I don't want to lug around a larger laptop - even my 13 inch macbook air I'm currently using feels a little too big.

Is this a decent plan, or is there anything I'm really missing out on without TB3? inb4 "get a desktop with the money and then buy a X220" - parents don't want me to get a desktop or a gaming laptop, and since they're the ones paying I'm fine going along with that and figure a thinkpad is the best way to get something I know I can rely on for years to come regardless.

>>
>>58875401
The T460s looks nice, but I've heard mixed things about the battery. Is it really that bad? the 20 hours battery life on the X260/X270 sounds amazing (and even though it's not thunderbolt, having a USBC port would be nice)

new batteries are not cheap. Part of the reason a used laptop is cheap is because it has an old battery that is probably used up half its charges and only has 80% of its original capacity.

even in the old days. new cellphone batteries were like $30-50 and they were much smaller capacity.

To whoever asked about the trackpoint caps
It was taken from a X230 keyboard, which is similar to the T520's. However they are slightly thinner and pressing them was hard because it was recessed.
I just applied a small piece of paper and tape to lift it up a bit.
I had the trackpoint buttons a little bit higher, so it felt pretty good, as the response was very quick, but bad if you get misclicks.

>>58869404
No, they should be firm, like firmer than a T400 if you ever had one.
The hinges probably need to be fixed sometime in the future.

>>58869572
I like them, got an X220T right now.
X230 is better, USB 3.0 and HD 4000 graphics.
However given the ThinkPad 13 is out, maybe try that thing out?

>>58870025
There was a business that had ordered fleets of E6430's with webcams and most of the users had tape over their cams... funny how $1500 was spent and they did that...
Though I can't complain because their IT department could of removed those and it would of been a bitch to resell them kinda.
>>
There's a guy selling an x230 near me used for $120. He says it's only got an 8gb HDD in it but it seems like he might not know much about it so he might be talking about its RAM. Would it even be able to run Win7 with a bunch of programs with that small a HDD? Also is it worth it if I wanted to swap out the keyboard?

Win7 can barely fit in a 22GB SSD after drivers and decent programs.
SSDs are so cheap, you can get like a used 128 for like $40 tops.
It probably has 8GB RAM, maybe a 320GB HDD, or maybe none... $120 not that bad though for local.

Modern Windows isn't going to be functional on 8GB. Certainly worrkable with linux, but he's probably talking about RAM anyway. You could probably find cheaper if it's otherwise quite basic, but it comes down to condition and the fact that it's local.

Lenovo has made some netbooks, though all they probably have going for them over others is a decent keyboard and trackpoint. Unfortunately proper small netbooks don't really get made anymore save for special models marketed for schools.

Have an X220. Bought bigger pic related. connected via usb 2.0-->SATA cable. Doesn't show up anywhere. Not in BIOS, not in windows (10), not in Samsung cloning software or any third party cloning software.

Tested cable with old HD, worked perfectly, so it's not the cable. Tested new SSD with MBP, also didn't pop up at all.

E models sort of run like a shittier parallel of the T series from about the T420 on (or maybe earlier). Mostly 14 and 15 inch models but I think there are some smaller ones. You're getting similar components but the build quality is shit with no subframe etc, and pretty much any non-electronic part will be a piece of shit.. If its a *20 or *30 then at that price you could probably find an equivalent T series for similar which will last much longer and be worth it in the long run.

Yeah I guess so, just wondering how bad can it get, since the lid construction doesn't get me too eager to disassemble it, because no screws, just the clickity-crackity thing.
I've seen a T400 with it's hinges come badly loose from the lid or smth like that. Probably the same kind of thing has happened here, just at lesser extent. Outside the wobble amplitude, they're kinda similarly stiff as my X60's and X200's, maybe even stiffer.

On Windows? I set it to highest sensitivity, windows sense to 6/11, no acceleration. Works best for me. On GNU/Linux you have to fiddle around more, thinkwiki has detailled instructions.

My T420 is my main machine since I quit vidya for good and I just don't need anything stronger for browsing, yt and coding. However, some shit to keep in mind based off my own experience:

1. While Win10 works for the most part OOTB on the T420, apart from things like the OSD and all the Fn-Buttons and Lenovo-specific software like the power manager, it's still shit. I had severe performance problems with 1080p60 youtube playback in Chrome (lots of dropped frames). I set up the machine with Win7 again and installed only the official Lenovo drivers one by one (no thinkvantage system update) and also no drivers from Microsoft update (they will fuck up your shit). Machine runs without performance problems now with all the functions and features intended.

2. Get some Arctic Silver 5 and reapply the thermal paste. It never went over 81 degrees celsius with prime95 and fan speed 7/7. Before it would go easily >90 with Arctic MX-4 applied.

3. Get TPfancontrol. Smart mode 1 with default values will give you whisper quietness

4. Either downgrade your BIOS to 1.37 or get a modded 1.46 so you can use >1333MHz RAM + whitelist, updated vbios and other goodies.

Considering you posted the price in € I suppose you're in Europe. Used ThinkPads are generally way more expensive here than in the US so that price is pretty good. I got mine with the same specs for 230€. But it seems almost too good. The condition must be pretty shitty,

No thanks. I already own a toaster with a E-300 and it's horrible, I can barely stand it.
Though it has managed to run heavyweight software like SolidWorks but that doesn't change my mind that the E-Series suck. Besides, they're low-end, low voltage SoCs.

>>

>corners of the lid are broken
that's probably the reason why it is so cheap. if you got photos and you're OK with the damage, go for it.

just to compare:

mine has the same specs (except it had a 320GB HDD that I swapped for an SSD) with only a tiny scratch on the lid, brand new keyboard and ~5h battery for 230€

I can't find x220s in my country with an IPS screen. Is it too hard to install one of those replacements which I can only find on eBay? Do they work with very specific models of x220 so I have to be careful or what?

I really want an classic IBM branded thinkpad that has libreboot on it. I'm thinking t60 but i'm not sure which version is the best, all I know is one iteration has an incredible screen but is absurdly rare in which case, what's the second best t60 I can get?

Also does anyone have a full guide of everything needed to run libreboot on said thinkpad (or another thinkpad) and a rough estimate of the price?

Are IPS screens worth it or just a meme? Better colors seem nice but so far my TN panel just works. I don't see how better viewing angle is any benefit at all because I'm always directly in front of my laptop. If anything I wouldn't want people nearby seeing what I do on screen.
>>
>>58885159
>http://pastebin.com/DYjEnVq1
I NEVER experienced win8 or 8.1 as a user. Never seemed worth it. But what I understand from a compatibility point of view it's somewhere between Win7 and Win10, as in e.g. power manager works on 8.1 but some other Lenovo software not. IMHO these old sandy bridge machines are win7 machines through and through IF you desire all the features they have to offer. If not you basically can run whatever OS you would like to, even OSX (runs formidably on a T420 as I heard, if you switch out the WiFi-card for a compatible one).

>>
>>58885487

An IPS screen on eBay for the X220 is ~$50-70 - it's worth it to me. The IPS screen can get richer and more vibrant colors as well as be brighter, so it's more pleasant to watch videos and read things on.

Seeing as how I spend hundreds of hours in front of it per year, I think it's worth it.
>>

Isn't there also the TFT display? How compares this to the LCD?
>>
>>58881706
I said heaviER, which means "more heavy" and pick up an X60 and compare.

Is English your second language?
>>
>>58886668
TFT is also LCD. They refer to entirely different things. Liquid crystal refers to the gate which blocks or allows light from the backlight layer. TFT (thin film transistor) is what controls the electrical charge of the display. IPS and TN refer to different orientations of the crystals and polarizers, which change the viewing angle and color reproduction characteristics of the panel.

It's possible to have a TFT IPS LCD display. It's also possible to have a TFT IPS LED LCD panel, on case you thought "LED" was different to LCD.

The wireless adapter on my t430s will randomly disconnect and stop being able to detect networks from time to time. The only way to fix it is by running the network troubleshooter and letting it re-enable the adapter (the adapter doesn't show as being disabled, and disabling/re-enabling in the network connections menu doesn't fix it). Yeah, I mean that's totally up to you.
The hardware itself isn't too ancient, but personally I'd go with the 430 just because it's a slight bit thinner, even though its a bit heavier. More portable + slightly better hardware is worth the extra couple of bucks, in my opinion.
>>
>>58893561
The T430 gets USB3, a reasonable iGPU improvement and a mild CPU improvement. If none of those are a huge difference to you then the HD+ screen can easily be worth it.

In my opinion some of the prices are fucked anyway though. I'd probably just be going with a T430 and upgrading the screen.
