IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

The battery is full. I have also tried booting it plugged in and throw the dock I have and nothing.

I cannot boot into BIOS. The screen is completely black and doesn't respond to any key input. I wouldn't be able to get to boot order or anything like that to try a livecd.

I did some searching like I should have and taking out the RAM produces a slew of beeps, which I believe I'm supposed to receive, so it is likely the RAM.

Is it common for used E6400/E6410' s to have some wobble in lid hinges?

It wobbles a few degrees. Outside this amplitude, it feels stiffish as it should, just like on any thinkpad I've had.

I'm puzzled whether the wobble is in the hinges themselves, or have they perhaps become loose where they're bolted onto the lid. I guess in the latter case I should fix it asap, yet I'm not too eager to go ahead since removing the bezel seems a bit tricky.
>>
>>58852926
It is getting older. It's a nice machine for moving around, just writing papers or dumb scripts but it has a first gen core i5. Since I bought it, I started doing stuff in cuda and it's frustrating to write stuff without being able to test if it actually works. That is why I am on the market for a laptop with a GPU.

I appreciate thinkpad's Linux support and I hate gamer aesthetic. However, the price of a brand new thinkpad is as high as a memebook.

If you mostly play older titles and aren't too concerned about maxing all the settings, sure. I have a W520 that serves a similar purpose, the only game I want to play on it that it can't handle is Dark Souls 3. You can always get an eGPU if the internal one proves insufficient, the CPU shouldn't be a bottleneck for anything.

Illustrator and photoshop are really helped by GPU acceleration, try to find one that has a nvidia graphics card and an i5 (you don't want an i7 because it'll throttle - the gpu and cpy are on the same heatpipe)

For graphics the t5xx or w5xx series are recommendable since the smaller models don't have 1080p screens and are incapable of installing any whatsoever because of a technical shortcoming. the 15" 1080p is already significantly better than any you'll get on the entire rest of the thinkpad line up, but you can also swap even better ones in from other brands. This is not the case for 14" and smaller.
>>
>>58855153
No if you don't immidietly start it after receiving. Wait for 2-3 hours in room temperature before starting, if you see shitton of moisture condensing on it wait longer.

>>
I came across a trick for all those who play games or whatever on their thinkpads but have trouble with the CPU overheating and causing the graphics to down-clock because they're on the same chip.

For some reason, at least on my i7, the CPU loves to turbo boost up until 99 degrees, even though it's not the bottleneck but my GPU is.

This is because of turboboost, which puts clock speed up to 3.5ghz or whatever depending on your laptop model. This is great for short bursts but for doing renders or games or whatever it still activates and STAYS on unnecessarily and everything throttles when you reach 100 degrees.

In Windows you can set the max CPU percentage under the power plan settings, if you set the max CPU percentage to 99% then it'll never overclock, and therefore never throttle. I've gone from situations where I'm at full CPU load and full GPU load at 100 degrees where the CPU is wasting all its cycles and the GPU is throttling to stop from burning my laptop to full CPU and full GPU load at 80 degrees which is neither dangerous for my laptop nor my GPU's clock. It actually increases my frames in MGSV AND my battery life. Win-win.

>>
>>58855396
How do I duplicate this under linux?

I used this as a way to get extra two years from my HP DV6 laptop with a faulty core.
I'd always get BSoD at random times, tested everything, and by pure coincidence I found out after running S+M CPU test.
After that I'd set the CPU to 50% and use it normally.
Though the whole thing was painful to use, especially since most of sites nowadays require strong CPU.
>>
>>58855476
Really frustratingly there's no way to disable turboboost in the bios, which you can on some laptops and desktops. Must be some kind of acpi thing you can do, sadly I'm not particularly knowledgable with Linux. Trying to do the most basic stuff like installing software that should really be repositories only to be returned "couldn't find installation candidate" baffles me.

I am very confused.

I recently purchased a used ThinkPad X230 Tablet. I put in an SSD and did a fresh format. Installed all drivers.

When I go to the Wi-Fi/Networks window near the clock, I see an option for "Verizon Wireless : Roaming"
I figure its the built in CDMA adapter, and if I connect, it will say "No SIM" or some shit. When I connected, it actually let me on. Internet access and all. A solid 1.5 Mbps.

There is no SIM card in this laptop, I looked and the slot is vacant. This is a fresh format of Win7. I do not have Verizon.

Can anyone explain how this is possible?
>>
>>58856572
I just put a Samsung 840 PRO in my X230T. Would have gone 850 PRO if it was a new buy, but this SSD was just laying around.

Had a Levovo G510 that broke, so I replaced it with a T420. I took the ram out of the G510 (Samsung 4GB M471B5273DHO-YKO), and was wondering if it would work on the T420?
>>
x220 with i7 and ips panel for 200? dude lives an hour and a half away though. willing to meet halfway. CL posting @300

>>
>>58856713
It should. T420 takes DDR3, "PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3" to be specific. The RAM from your G510 is "DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz", which will work. The RAM may downspeed to 10600 (1333mhz) instead of its rated 12800 (1600mhz).

Suggestion for Anons in UK.
Don't go full retard with your bids. This is worth if you get it cheap.

As a general advice, be always looking for deals on your favorite items. You can never have too much spare keyboards with your favorite switch. Most people prefer the Nippon Miniature Bearing ones, though the Alps mouse button are great, and I like the loud clicking in the Chicony keys.

All the time. I really wasn't prepared for how small the screen actually is. It's like a netbook screen with a fat computer stuck to it.
>>
>>58860414
An SSD will make your computer last another ten years.
You will want to max out the RAM to 16GB.
And when they become cheap as dirt, get the fastest CPU allowed by your model.
>>58860513
The screen should be no bigger for 1366x768. It is lores, but at least the whole computer takes little space. Larger screens with that res make me want to go out on a kitten killing spree.

Swap RAM out if you can. At first take out one stick, assuming you have more than one, then the other and see if either causes problem. If nothing, you can either try buying new RAM and see if it does anything, or...well not sure if you can but see if you can run a live cd of memtest.

If the screen doesn't even turn on at all it's probably mobo though.

What should I do with it? I already have a good desktop.

Use it in bed obviously
I never leave the house either and only have it for in bed or while on holidays. Barely use the desktop anymore because this is so comfy

Where's the best place to sell a Thinkpad?

eBay's fees are pretty steep but I imagine any forum they're swapped on would have post and registration time requirements.

Do people look for these on craigslist?

Now you can leave the house and carry your computer with you. Fun.

Fax would be an idea if it wasn't useless and available through online services anyway.
Dial-up internet might make sense but it's only ever going to be practical if your home has nothing but a phone line and you can get a connection for cheap and use it constantly so you can get maybe one episode of your favorite chinese cartoon off it each day.

I don't think the x200s series is that overall, just the whole resolution thing can be shitty. Don't fret too much anon. You can always get a dock and a cheap monitor.

If you have a Civic with a fake carbon fibre hood it'd go nice with it, otherwise don't bother with that shitty new chink crap.

Speaking of housefires, the old Jap batteries caught fire a LOT less frequently than the new chink ones. Chinks BTFO, housefires are caused by newer machines.

Half of it or If your t420 support express card generation 2 you will be able to reach 5gbs
>>
>>58866037
Just leave the battery plugged in
It's better for the computer itself
Plus unless you keep the same battery for 5+
Also leaving the battery just sitting there for a while can actually be worse for it than having it charge a bit and discharge.
>>
>>58866037
Some laptops will take a performance drop just running on AC if they're designed to supplement power supply with the battery for turboing the CPU and such.

I've never bothered limiting charging myself, but going of a quick search its handled in your OS. ~50% charge is optimal for storing lithium so with conservative charging limits there shouldn't be much wear.
>>
just bought an x230. when i put in my previous ssd (which already has windows and arch on it), grub can start, but neither windows nor arch start. windows gives an immediate BSOD and arch fails to find a UUID.

is this due to secure boot or something? wat do?

>>
>>58866432
Honestly, trying trying to debug issues with the windows bootloader is an absolute pain in the arse, and recreating the arch install would just be a case of copying your home folder over anyway, though if you're using vanilla arch obviously it's a little more effort but still simple enough. Unless the solution is particularly obvious I'd just reinstall both from scratch, better to spend an hour or so doing that then spending that long or longer just to have to screw around setting things up (at least in Windows) to suit the new machine.

>is this due to secure boot or something? wat do?
It's one single BIOS option, is it so hard to test it yourself?

my bad i was being retarded there. guess i'll reinstall windows and arch, thanks. shouldn't take too long.

in general, is this normal when transplanting a hard drive from one laptop to another? this is the first time i've actually done so, so i don't really know what's going on lol

Tell me, what would be the characteristics of the perfect retro Thinkpad for the modern times?
>>
>>58866697
>never
It's confirmed by insiders.
Too bad they have NDAs so they can't say too much.
>>
>>58866671
I currently have a couple MBR formatted hard-drives with Ubuntu, Manjaro and Win7 that were all installed on a different laptop. Windows was cracked through the bootloader so when it was transplanted the crack broke which was still fixable, but it also won't shutdown hibernate unless you hold the button in. Ubuntu and Manjaro work fine. I guess Windows is just a lot of luck and Linux install will vary a bit depending on how the bootloader and maybe the fstab are set up.

>>58866697
>Tell me, what would be the characteristics of the perfect retro Thinkpad for the modern times?
You could satisfy most just a squarer screen and classic keyboard desu. If they wanted a lazy solution then you could probably just chuck in a motherboard from the latest T series, use a thicker sub frame and casing than normal and fill in any awkward internal gaps resulting from the haphazard design with battery cells.

And it's more than a ROM flash. I've gone through with the swap and went back. The classic 7 rows offer no advantage unless that's all you've used and never plan on buying a laptop manufactured past 2012.
