Oh no, not missing it again.
How do I utilize a surround sound setup on my computer. I can build a computer, but I know nothing of sound equipment at all.

Is this how it works?:
Yellow - the SPDIF out which I use optical cables for which will plug into the SPDIF in/Optical In on the back of an A/V Receiver*

Blue - Once that's plugged in, I just plug in a bunch of surround sound speakers into those outputs which will go to power those individual speakers?**

Green - I keep seeing battlestation setups with these little boxes which I'm told are "DACs" which throws me off because ... that's not a receiver like all these AV ones I search for on Amazon.

* - I never see anyone with a whole receiver in their battlestation which leads me to think that there's something wrong with that setup

** - where the fuck do you even buy the speakers for those outputs? "AV speakers" yield no results.

Buy a thinkpad x200.

You are going to school to study not to play games.
For school you need a computer that can use Word, Chrome/Firefox and read Emails.
Thats it, which any laptop since 2009 can do.

anon, are you geniunely stupid?
Get a cheap surface pro 4 (they have discounts) or a surfave book. much more versatile due to great note-taking, decent keyboard on the s.book, and much more portable.

Just build a mITX build if you really want to game
>>
>>58829349
Those DACs usually have amps for headphones in them. Or they buy speakers that have amps in them (powered) and hook them up to the DAC. Nothing wrong with receivers, they are usually overkill and too big for computer desktops. I have my computer hooked up with optical to my receiver.

Hey /g/uys,

Are there any kaby lake motherboards that is mini-PCIe compatible?

Been planning on buying a new motherboard lately, but don't want to
buy a bulky looking wireless card or have one with it built in since I'm on a budget.

I already have a mini-PCIe wifi/bluetooth card from one of my old laptops. so I'm
wondering if there are any good mobos around that can use it.

Any suggestions?

i just installed an i7-4790k, upgraded from an i5-4430. I'm using the stock fan that came with it, on the most CPU intensive game I have (BF1) it frequently hits 67-70 degrees at ~60% usage. Should i consider getting a non-stock cooler?

Yes.
More if you ever plan to overclock it.
Get a 212 EVO or X.

Noctua NH-U12S or 14S if you want to get into heavy overclocking.

I have a B150 motherboard running on KabyLake

I'm having some issues and was thinking of downgrading the BIOS to the previous version, both the newest and the previous support KabyLake.

Is it safe for me to do it using the KabyLake or could it become incompatible all of a sudden and require a Skylake?

Two questions Linux distros related.

Apparently I installed the LTS release of Xubuntu 16.04.1 on my laptop. I kind of want to switch to the non LTS version but
>how do I do this
>how difficult is it to install the new versions every nine months or whatever
Do I just have to backup everything and do a clean wipe?

I'm trying to find a KDE I want to use. Was trying to use Kubuntu but it won't boot properly on my desktop(screens go into power saving mode), but will on my laptop. Any fixes I've tried haven't worked. So not too sure if I'll want to use it if it can't even boot up a live cd(usb). But I tried Mint Serena which is also KDE. Booted just fine. Can't tell much of a difference on the visual side besides Mint's default was darker and the background was different.
Is there some big difference between Kubuntu and Mint?

I have an Early 2011 MBP. I upgraded the RAM, replaced the battery, and am about to drop some $$$ to upgrade to an SSD. Is that unwise to do on a computer which is this old? I dust the inside of it pretty regularly and have no problems with hardware outside of a slightly wobbly screen. I assume I should replace the screws in the casing as they will rust, no?

Totally. I can't speak for your exact situation, but for my 5 year old desktop that was on 24/7 for at least a year, an SSD was a good investment. Faster boot time, and files didn't take a fuckton of time to open.

Also, when you finally get a new laptop, you can transfer the SSD over.

Hey guys, brief question here.

So I'm going on a site, and 60% of the time, when you just click anywhere on the page, it goes full on gay and reroutes to some stupid ad shit.

My adblocking settings cause it to just go to a blank white page asking if I want to continue, and I always have to go back to the previous page and return to what I'm doing. This is extremely fucking irritating and I was able to locate this element.

<script>
var _wm_settings={popunder:{url:"http://adrunnr.com/?placement=401444&redirect",times:3,hours:6,cookie:"expla2",fastbind:true}};
</script>

Any chance someone could tell me what I can do to remove this script automatically each time I visit the page?

Thanks!

I host a web server, and I use www.noip.com so my friends don't have to remember my IP address. Is this any less secure than having a regular domain name? This might be an extra stupid question, but I'm just paranoid.
>>
>>58831743
Get to know C and assembly. Deeply understanding how these two languages manipulate memory will unlock almost every class of attack against native programs (as opposed to, say, SQL injection), and allow you to better understand the operating systems you'll end up in.
>>
>>58831816
There might be a point where your IP changes and is re-assigned to another customer, but your computer hasn't updated the no-ip entry yet.

This is to be honest an issue with dynamic IPs and DDNS in general, though. Without asking your ISP for a static IP there's little you can do about it. (Though if you can get to genuinely technical support rather than a call centre drone, many ISPs will give you one).
>>
>>58831896
They have a program that checks when your IP address changes and updates it on your account page. Pretty handy.
>>
>>58831950
Yes, but it only runs once every couple of minutes, and in the time in between, people going to your no-ip will be redirected to someone who can impersonate you.
It's unlikely, low-risk, and it's intrinsic to DDNS, but that's the way it is.

I think gnu shred can target individual partitions, but most Windows installs have the OS and data on a single partition. Alright guys I plan on going ballistic on my ISP soon because I am 90% sure they are ripping me off but I know they will try to make excuses to try to rip me off even further. So I come to you for tech related advice to be sure they are ripping me off and so I can argue with them properly.
Here is the deal.
My internet is 20/1.5 Mbps which should translate to 2.5 MB/s and 187 kB/s download and upload speeds.
It was working at a 1.4 MB/s and 100 kB/s speeds till I called there the first time after which they raised it to 17/1.2Mbps or 2.0 MB/s and some 140 of very unstable kB/s.
Now, I would like my full speeds. But they will use the following arguments:
1. I keep uploading and downloading a lot (because I am on a skype call pretty much all day long) so basically they say my internet is "congested" and that is why it is not going as fast as it should.
2. The maximum speeds are only theoretical and that is why it does not go the full speed as it should.
Now, for argument 1, it is rubbish right? My internet is completely limitless, not even a fair use policy so I can download and upload to my hearts content as far as I know. Downloading and uploading a lot cannot congest the tubes right?
And for argument 2, first of all it is I think air transmitted internet but the transmitter is like 150m away from our house on a very high place with literally no obstructions and the weather is perfect as well. And what is more, when they were testing the internet before they increased it to 20/1.5, I was getting the full 20/1.5 speeds that I was supposed to. In fact, I never even went over the 2.0 download speed so I am 100% sure they capped it at those speeds.
So basically my problem is that I believe they have capped it to the speeds it is at now and I need to be able to make them uncap it and for that I need to know that these two arguments of theirs don't hold any ground.
>>
>>58835115
It's advertised as "up to" and you don't have any service level agreement. You probably can't have your government force your ISP to do anything.
>>
>>58835181
check your agreement and see what's the guaranted speed (not the advertised one but minimal). if it's lower, then you can sue them
i used a 80mbps internet that had a guaranteed 20mbps. it barely went up to 30 so there was nothing i could do
>>
>>58835181
But the problem is that they are literally limiting it. In that case, why don't they fucking say that the speeds can reach UP TO 1 GB/s but they only give you 2 MB/s speeds?

>>58835115
Another thing that happens is that when I test my speed or start downloading something the speed shoots up to the maximum speeds as they should work but after few seconds it goes back to the limited speed.
>>
>>58835204
I am not sure if such a thing is even in the contract. But basically I plan on threatening to change ISPs if they keep doing scummy things like this but I just need to be sure that their arguments are rubbish and they are actually artifically limiting my speeds.
>>

I've tried circumventing the whole mess by converting the file to a PDF, but it stops at 47% after getting there in five seconds.
>>
>>58835257
I don't want to sue them. I just want my full speed. I know it can work full speed because it did before. But now they limited it. I need to be sure that that is what has happened and that none of the bs they say is true.

>>58835458

But I am right, right? Downloading/uploading a lot has no effect on the speed that I should have and neither can it be because of external factors like bad weather or too much distance and whatnot.
>>
>>58835463
>Downloading/uploading a lot has no effect on the speed
this is correct
>neither can it be because of external factors like bad weather
this is correct for wired transmission (unless there's a fucking end of the world) wireless transmission might be affected by air
>or too much distance
this actually might slow down or even generate errors and needs additional testing before you can tell for sure

Well as for the second and third, the weather is perfect, the transmitter is 150m away from the house and as I was saying when I actually start downloading something it goes the full speed for a few seconds and then kind of gets throttled to a maximum of 2.0 MB/s not to mention that when they were testing the speed increase prior to increasing it, it was working perfectly with the full speed.
Thank you for your answers mate.

Electric cars have the top and bottom 10%-15% of your battery unavailable. You can only move between 10% charge and 90% charge, which become the new 0% and 100%. You should do the same with your laptop. Don't let it go below 10-15% and don't let it charge more than 85-90%. That's the gist of it. There are more technicalities, but fuck them.

Ans yes, I know what some of you will say, you can opt to get the uncapped batteries in electric cars and use their full potential, but fuck that shit.

http://ark.intel.com/products/87261/Intel-Pentium-Processor-N3700-2M-Cache-up-to-2_40-GHz

according to cpuboss.com my CPU is better than the minimum required one, is it?
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentium-N3700-vs-AMD-Athlon-II-X4-640

-GPU:
all dxdiag says is 'Intel(R) HD Graphics'
but apparently i have 'Braswell HD Graphics 405' if google what gpu goes with my cpu
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-405-Braswell-Benchmarks-and-Specs.169241.0.html

when i check GPU properties:
Total Available Graphics Memory: 2132 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 128 MB
System Video Memory: 0 MB
Shared System Memory: 2004 MB

-4GB RAM

-DirectX 12

i understood the' Dedicated System Memory' is my VRAM and used to think i can only run games up to 128 but then i tried this game
RimWorld
http://store.steampowered.com/app/294100/?snr=1_237_querypaginated__104

it runs perfectly and it needs 384 MB of VRAM

so now from what i understand my VRAM is the 'Shared System Memory' and apparently i have 2GB so can i run Stellaris with its 1024MB VRAM requirement???

And another little question:
How come i have DirectX12 when the GPU page (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-405-Braswell-Benchmarks-and-Specs.169241.0.html) says i can only support DirectX 11.2 ?

i will appreciate a detailed answer, i want to understand this subject and not need to ask each time i want to try a new game.

The printer function worked right away, I only had to add a network printer on home computers.

And now I want to be able to scan anything with the printer's scanner and make it available on the home network. The rPI also hosts an FTP-server, where the scanned document could ideally be saved

how do i do it pls

Tried any of these things?

If you're okay with paying hundreds of dollars for a simple screen change, go to a nearby computer repair shop. If you're not, then buy a replacement screen from ebay or whatever and replace it yourself.

Or just toss it into a bin and buy another one.

That's really rude.
You have no idea what's like living here.
From corrupted government to overpriced chink techs.
Even the "tech guys" are mostly greedy merchants.
One time I've taken my laptop to check if an accessory is defective or not, it was.
The "tech guy" told me it's because my laptop was infected, I was just running lubuntu.

What's the point of visiting a stupid question thread, when all I end up doing is answering stupid questions and all my stupid questions are ignored.
>>
>>58837925
if you can answer stupid questions then maybe your questions are above the level of stupid questions
>>
>>58830127
It seems you're not just tech illiterate.

I just did a fresh windows 10 install. What drivers do I need for my laptop?
>>
>>58838277

From windows 7 and up, you don't need drivers.
>>
why is chrome now loading images centered on a black background instead of top left with a white background?
>>
>>58838277
Unless your device manager throws up a red flag, you probably don't have to install anything manually
>>
>>58838389
Just to piss you off and make you feel older
>>
>>58838389
Because that's how Firefox has done it for years and it's miles better?

Top left on white background is Internet explorer-tier shit

I need to make a very simple app for Android, just for me to use. I have this project where I need to record a timestamp every time I press the volume up key which will save a line to a text file like DATE HH:MM:SS and maybe milliseconds too but not mandatory.

I also need to have a secondary action when I press volume down which will save the date and all but adding the word success.

I already know low level programming and scripting but I don't really want to learn java to do this shit. Is there any easy app maker that will let me do this?

Thank

I want to add additional HDMI inputs to my raspi. I want to connect pick related to it, but don't know from which Terminal Block pins to attach to the recieving pins on my Pi.
DiY splicer/ multiple signal in-> one signal out with Pi controlling the switches

Shit man, what do you mean?
Even if you're max dumb, it's only 16 characters to memorise, and 10 of them are 0-9. Can you not remember that A, the first letter of the alphabet is 10, etc, to F for Fifteen?

Perhaps I'm missing the point and you're obliquely asking something else.
