Why the fuck are desks so fucking expensive? Hell, I find like desks that are thinner than these and they still cost at least $300 or more. I can handle paying out the ass for this, but at least don't make the market cost to where I can easily just buy two dinner tables and make that my computer desk.
>>
Office grade desks tend to be designed to take a shitload of wear and tear. Though a lot of places do overprice them.

Otherwise you are paying for materials, or even design. I do feel a lot of "traditional" desks use a clunky unergonomic design personally.
>>
>>58827206
I just want something fairly priced for what it's designed for. I'm reconstructing my office space, which is my room, and I'm looking to get a good spacial workspace.
>>
>>58827183
No anon. Desks aren't expensive.
>>
>>58827183
Just go to Ikea.
Ikea has good desks (like the Malm one I use) at a reasonable price.

Where are you from? If you're in Europe you might be able to get old stuff that the municipality or county hospitals and schools are replacing.
They're usually high quality stuff here in Sweden (pic related).

I'm in the US, but craigslist usually has some alright deals on some old desks they're replacing, whether its in a school or office.

Best computer desks are utility tables, usually built to take a lot of stress and weight for garage stuff.

Depending on your area thrift stores may be an option, salvation army close to me consistently has extremely sturdy 20-70 year old solid wood furniture of all types for less than $30-50
>>
>>58827365
At my old staying, I got a damn good big ass desk from someone moving for free. The shit was great, and the only reason I didn't bring it with me is because it was so damn big. It held everything on it.
>>
Because it's one of those things that the user often doesn't pay for. As a rule of thumb that's a good way to drive up prices. "Business class laptops" work the same way, for example.

It's as good a time as any to learn how to assemble furniture out of dimensional lumber, though. Make it simple at first and expand with parts as you learn.
>>
>>58827382
Only thing I have against wood is that it attracts insects.

Mine is. I built it by myself and though I am over 6ft and quite strong, it was a little surprising to see just how heavy it was. Don't take that in a bad way though, its heavy in a good way.
This desk has been with me for over a year and doesn't have even the slightest sign of any wear/tear/wobbles, and I've got my computer (with fully custom water cool solution in there, CPU+GPU), monitor, speakers, lamp, pig figurines, the lot.
Not the slightest bit of instability.

Not the Anon to whom you're replying but since I'm using exactly what you just described, I'll point out a caveat: this is ever so slightly too tall for a desk. if I could be bothered I'd look for new legs about 2-3" shorter since I can't really lop anything off these ones.

define reliable
I got that exact Malm desk, the glue holding a thin layer of painted wood one of the sides let go within 6 months, the paint on the edge facing me started to go around that time also and has gotten worse over 3 years. Got water damaged pretty quickly as well due to a desk plant, so now one end is all lumpy. Extremely easy to scratch as well. Also the wire management pocket under the desk is a disaster and hard as shit to maintain, and dust is impossible to clean out from where the retractable desk bit meets the main desk.

But is it ""reliable"" as in "does it hold shit"? Yea sure its like 5 slabs of wood and it does its job I guess. If I could though, I'd go back and buy a real desk instead of this ikea shit. Local Costco has brought in some way better shit over the yeras for just ~40-60 dollars more.

If you actually go to the show room you can find which desks aren't just paper pieced together. There's a lot of them that are pretty solid.
>>
>>58827856
that defeats the whole fucking purpose and will be just as expensive as buying something good unless you can make a trade or know a guy.
>>
Ok, here is my tip if you aren't a complete faggot.

Look at particleboard, look at how thick it is, look at how much it costs.

Shit by me costs 25$ for a 4 foot by 8 foot board.

Now, any desk that isn't real word IS particle board, so you know the kind of weight it can take.

get 2 boards and have them glued/bolted/screwed together and make legs out of the area you cut out. buy a 3rd board would likely give you shelf space

a bit of creativity with the particleboard, some aluminum braces possibly wheels, and you now have sliding drawers.

get a cheap hard wood and make some braces out of it, you know just to be sure, the particleboard doubled up will take anything you put on it within reason, but better safe then sorry.

and with this you have a desk that is 15-20 square feet of space for under 150$

Now, you can cast a urethane top on it, and that will cost you a bit but be perfect for your needs, just need to watch those bubbles or you are fixing shit later.

you could also put some vinyl stickers on it or glue some nice vanerar to it but both of these are costly.

another thing you could do is what my school did for art. They gut a fuck ton of wood, stood it on its side, and glued it together, that way at the end of the year, they could sand the fuck out of the top, put down a new lacquer coating, and call it a day, and they could do this for the next 100 years and not run out of wood. then you stand it up with some metal or thick pvc pipes and call it a done job.

If you have access to a router, you can easily add flourishes to the desk

all in all, 200$ for something a store would sell for 1000$ isn't bad at all.
>>
>>58827815
Sorry, didn't mean tempered. I'm not sure what the word is for what I mean.
I like the anti-shatter shit that they put on car windows so it doesn't just fall into pieces when it gets broken
>>
>>58827183
Build one. I bought 3 thick zebrawood boards and 5 walnut wood boards for legs which cost me around $120 together. Desks aren't cheap, if it isnt chink garbage you are paying atleast 2/3 just for the craftsmanship so don't expect much from a sub $500 desk
>>
>>58827856
Don't expect it to be cheap
>>
>>58827871

Building a house isnt a basic skill. Humans back in primal times weren't experts, either. They lived beneath shoddy sticks and rock. It was the people who specialized in those skills that made better living places. I don't know 100% but a lot of it is logistics
logistics, cheaper to transport and move smaller/lighter stuff
cheaper to purchase and manufacture materials
can be sold for cheaper selling more, more often with planned obsolescence makes more money than having fewer buyers for a more expensive better made product.
I think a lot of it has to do with cost as people have to save up longer for a better one and a cheaper one sooner probably gives more satisfaction than having a pillow and tower on the floor and propping the monitor up on a box. it's not like most people are rolling in money where they can go buy quality made products for something that's just going to sit there unused a lot of the time

3/4" plywood is perfectly Capable of supporting a large person in such a use case. The only thing that would be questionable is how the stairs are secured seeing as there doesn't appear to be any actual support at the top or than whatever holds it to the frame / wall. Would still suggest use of at least 1" plywood, and anyone concerned about the structural integrity could use 2"x4"s to reinforce the runners. But a 2 foot span on 3/4" plywood can support a ridiculous amount of weight.

I've had one that looks like that but not L shaped for a while now. Biggest complaints are lack of drawers/storage space and the bonding between the pane of glass and the supporting bars wore off at some point, now it's just slides around if you give it more than a gentle push

>>58829769
Yessir. I mean, it's not too much work to set up a decent 2.1 system since there are only 4 parts: sub, speakers, amp, and wire. But yeah this is the system I replaced my X-230s with. Those things lasted forever though (and still work today), which is amazing since they were like $40 in 2006 or whenever I got them.

>>58829852
What can you tell me about horizontal dispersion? Is there a clear spatial awareness, a soundstage that is predominantly present between the two speakers? The X-230 manages to create just that. I hate sound that is predominantly coming from the direction of the two speakers.

Also with a separate sub I'm worried about fake bass. With my current audio setup, the X-230 puts out perfectly accurate bass.

>>
>>58829928
>spatial awareness, a soundstage that is predominantly present between the two speakers
Aren't those competing statements? Anyway, stereo imaging is mostly related to where the speakers are actually located, specifically how close together they are. The general guideline I've heard is you want the distance between your speakers to be less than the distance between your speakers and you. So if you sit 2 feet away from your speakers, they should be less than 2 feet apart from each other.

The unfortunate thing with my current desk setup is that I have to have the speakers too far apart (acoustically), otherwise it looks funny. Function over form, I suppose. But when I was in college and only using a single monitor, the speakers were neatly set on either side and I never had any issues with the left and right channels separating themselves. It always appeared to come from the monitor.

>Also with a separate sub I'm worried about fake bass
The only fake bass I'm aware of is from cheaper speakers which boost the midbass (80~150 Hz or so) to sound like they have a full low end range. A separate sub is the only way to ensure that that *doesn't* happen. And Logitech speakers are very well known (despised) for using that trick; same thing with bluetooth and other small form factor speakers. It's been a while since I ran a spectrum test on my X-230s but if I remember right, they dropped off at around 70-80Hz. Much better than a laptop speaker or one built into a monitor, but they simply can't hold a candle to a proper 8"+ subwoofer. That part is just physics, no way around it.
>>
>>58830392
Is that the G402? How do you like it?
>>
>>58830678
>Aren't those competing statements?
Not at all. I don't want to hear sound coming from the speakers. I don't want to be aware of it that I have speakers at all. I want the speakers to position the sound in the space between them. The X-230 does that perfectly. Obviously how acoustics are with the objects around the speakers plays a great part in this.

>distance between your speakers to be less than the distance between your speakers and you
Although speaker placement is important, this particular aspect is irrelevant with good dispersion. I'm sitting about 30 centimeters (12 inches) closer to each speaker than the distance they are apart due to my 34" utra-widescreen.

>It's been a while since I ran a spectrum test on my X-230s but if I remember right, they dropped off at around 70-80Hz.
I don't do measurements. I go by ear, how it feels listening to it. The bass is accurate with my current DAC, only the amount is lacking, due to the obvious physical size restraints.

I do see how it's impossible to conceptualize difficult things for someone as morbidly obese as you, like being able to pull your chair so close to the table with you sitting in it, that your elbows end up not more than 1-2 inches away from the desk while you're still leaning back - which makes an armrest completely redundant - but at the very least you could try to comprehend what was already written, so I don't have to repeat myself.

you can rent contractor 'grade' tools for fairly cheap, get all the cutting down one day and that's it, you SHOULD have a drill and if you don't fucking buy one, normal hand drills are good enough for aluminium if you go the metal route, easily with pvc, and most likely you can get them to fit into a socket you can screw onto the desk and not have to worry about drilling at all.

>>58827913
Get some shitty lumber for free, and try out a jigsaw, as this is likely what you are going to be using for the cuts, as a circular saw, while likely better for the job, can run away on you easier.

>>58830603
Whole reason I said particle board instead of plywood, even though ply would be stronger, is particleboard is easier to cut and as fucked as my wrists are even I can still do that.

for apartments, you can get places like home depot to cut them on site usually for free, I have to do this as I don't have a way to transport 8x4 and shipping is fuckin expensive.

>>58827906
saw, screwdriver, nails, paintbrush, and some pieces of hardwood you can glue sandpaper too to help you plane/sand down what you cut. everything to work with particleboard is something you SHOULD OWN as they are common enough tools.
Personally will be using a jigsaw and a hand planer when I make mine cause shit wrists to do full manual hand saw

>>58827936
pocket joints suck, you are better off with wood dowels, glue and a drill, then cut and sand down what comes through the top, then drill on the inside some small aluminum braces, with short screws... but considering my desk is held in place with 2 metal dowels that you screw another thing in to lock them in place and this is particleboard... I would say 3 or 4 wood dowels alone will do just fine. also, the top is in 3 4sqft chunks held together with metal brackets, screws and dowels, this is all shit even a retard could build given the parts.
seeing how my desks were uilt is the entire reason I amd confidante I could also build a custom desk

have a similar looking table, has a wooden footrest, drawer for keyboard, and small elevated platform to put your dekstop tower on.

managed to barely fit 2 monitors, a 24" in portrait mode and the 27" on a desk clamping swivel vesa mount. The flex is god awful though, goes crooked if you angle the monitor and extend it too far.

The keyboard drawer is so cramped though can't fit a mouse comfortably.

The Bekant is probably the cheapest motorized height-adjustable table you can get. Too bad it's ugly as fuck and wiggles quite a bit when in standing position.

I got pic related about 3 weeks ago. It's fucking amazing and even has a USB cable so I can control it from my computer and set up schedules and stuff.
But it cost a bit over 1000€

Get one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006RSQG and the return bridge. I just set mine up about a month ago and I'm digging it.
