Hi GNU/Linux Friends,

I come to you with a problem. I can't seem to get a live USB of Fedora 25 (workstation) to boot to desktop. This is a similar problem to the bug in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1282244 , except that I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit here. Still UEFI. USB target drive is a 32gb Kingston Data Traveler 100 G3, confirmed working.
The Fedora ISO's sha256 hashes check out. It's good to go before it hits the USB.

Have so far tried the following processes:
>1) dd with a copy of dd for Windows
result: fail during test at the Fedora boot menu
>2) Using Fedora's Media Writer application; this downloads a fresh ISO (cunts)
result: fails during test at the Fedora boot menu. Hilariously also manages to not copy data to the USB. 3 partitions: 45mb unallocated, 5mb EFI, 28.86gb unallocated
>3) Using YUMI v2
result: apparently doesn't support UEFI in its boot loader, and I can't be assed
>4) Manually creating a bootable usb with diskpart, extraction of the ISO, etc.
result: still fails to boot to desktop and fails the test

Pulling my hair out here and can't figure out what the fuck makes Fedora a special snowflake in comparison to Ubuntu and the like. Can anyone run me through the linux boot process at a high level, with UEFI in mind?

Arch may come with fewer packages but their packages have ~everything enabled. Debian netinstall comes slick and their packages are split more so you have bigger package count. Try apt-get --no-install-recommends <package>, less "bloat".

Thanks friends.

Re-ran the Fedora's media writer as administrator and wiped/re-did the drive. Sacrificing a Gnu helped along with some incense offering and voodoo play. No fucking clue what the fuck changed. Still has fucky partitions.

On another note, I am not experiencing wayland, haven't found a proper solution to get thinkpad acpi working with hot keys and battery control (can echo to /sys/), and have yet to find the repos with the proprietary nvidia drivers (or at least a way to disable the card on boot, not in bios). dnf has a nice and clean output.

I suppose you are using the last version of firefox, which should ship with the plugin in pic. Check if all the flags in about:config starting with "media.mediasource" are set on true.
If you are using the gstreamer backend then you should also install gstreamer-libav and whatever your distro calls the base and "good" plugin set.

Hardly a surprise for me in all honesty.
It's incredibly common for specialists to be absolutely clueless in other fields.
Rings especially true for Americans.

We have a stereotype that an american can be a certified specialist in screwing in a lighbtulb, best in the country but will call another guy to unscrew it.

What's your experience with copying to usb drives on linux?

I just read about the whole routine of writing to cache and periodically flushing to the physical storage.

It has been fairly janky for me in recent days.
Yesterday I tried to copy a 3,1G file to an NTFS-formatted drive and the speeds were abysmal.
We're talking like 800kBps or transfer speeds and entire system freezing every 2 seconds despite the fact that CPU was pretty much on idle and not even 1/4 of available memory was filled.

Have you had any luck optimizing the process?

You can use package called gdebi which will install it by double-click (like on windoze) and handle the dependencies.

But unfortunately it will not solve dependencies, so you have to install them separately.

How's Unity these days? I have a few issues with other DEs at the moment:

-Xfce: A bit of a mess with how it handles window border decorations separately from contents. Tearing for me can only be fixed with Compton/Compiz and the latter has issues with what I mentioned.

KDE: Enabling Vsync kills performance

GNOME: Some of its settings cannot be handled by the tweak tool, such as some of the fonts. Doesn't work smoothly on my config.

Cinnamon: Some of its applets/desklets are either too buggy or don't work on more recent versions.

Pantheon: Requires elementaryOS, seems a bit green still, can only be installed on Ubuntu 16.04 but not 16.10 through PPA.

Seems my only two other options are MATE and Unity at this point.

you could just run the installer iso in a VM, with the physical disk attached

you're gonna need to make a new EFI partition (fat32, efi type)

i've done that to replace a bad "reserved" partition on a bios machine, it might also work for an efi partition

there was probably a way to generate a new reserved partition without installing windows completely, but i couldn't find it, documentation for "advanced" stuff like this is shit with windows, and user information is mostly useless, only the most basic and common scenarios are easy to find

So, I'm deciding on a new distro.
I think I'm not gonna go with a rolling release this time so I'm currently deciding between Fedora and Debian.

I want to start with a minimal installation, and add what I need. From what I read this would be a bit easier with Debian.
Any comments on RPM vs apt?

I use Arch on my netbook and I'm thinking that I'm gonna miss the AUR. Anything similar with Debian?
Other suggestions?

I was thinking about how one could define hexdecimal colors instead of the normal 256 range and came up with this wierd idea right here, so why not sharing it.

It basically temporary abuses/redefines the shades of white (244-248) with the colors of the free speech flag.

So,

16.04 or 16.10?

Also, I have some AMD GPU here that stopped getting proprietary drivers on Ubuntu. I've heard AMDGPU PRO drivers are the replacement for those, but at the moment GCN 1.0 cards don't have much support for it. I'm not too savvy, but were they released, would I have more trouble getting those drivers to work on LTS due to an older kernel version or something? I'm a bit of a dumbass so don't go easy on me.

No.

Don't listen to other people. The answer is no. There's no distro that everyone should use. Even if there are some very good distros that can actually suffice for most users, they aren't the true replacement for every possible use.

Judging by your question though, I would say >>58793924 is right. Unless you have a specific need to run 16.10, use 16.04 (LTS) like he said. It's the distro that gives less headaches of all slightly popular ones, for sure.

You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. never shit on arch, have it on another drive used it for 2+ years thanks anyway
>>
>>58793971
See, I knew that it didn't make much sense.

What I mean is, to my understanding newer drivers require newer kernel versions (I might be wrong on that). 16.04 uses 4.4, 16.10 uses 4.8.

Should I just use 16.04 and upgrade its kernel, to be able to install newly available drivers, or am I just completely misunderstanding how it works?

Alrighty then.

The inherent and eternal problem with proprietary AMD drivers for linux was the fact that they were only made for few specific kernel versions and few specific xorg versions and never worked on anything else.

amdgpu is supposed to be a solution to this problem.

>Should I just use 16.04 and upgrade its kernel, to be able to install newly available drivers, or am I just completely misunderstanding how it works?

What else
>>
>>58794101
I might have performance issues on the desktop.

I tried Ubuntu Gnome not too long ago and animations were lagging a little bit, it seemed like a problem specifically with drivers.
>>
>>58794153
Then yes, using the non-LTS version might be better idea.

The point of LTS is not upgrading the kernel and xorg (if possible and secure enough) so that people using proprietary drivers aren't left with machines that don't work after upgrade

I can't play latest public TiTS or any .swf I downloaded locally. The browser I specifically use for flash is Chromium, it prompts me to save the file second time instead of opening it (but its playable on the site).
I had this issue long ago, it was caused by mime-type, there is a well-known fix for it (e.g. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1410917#p1410917). The thing now is, the fix is applied (even mimetype Tits.swf replies correctly) and yet its still not working despite working when the previous public build came out (about a month ago).

I've checked things around and it turns out that while mimetype detects it correctly file -mime thinks its just an octet stream. Not sure if that's relevant.

Its just a long dist-upgrade. The real pain is migrating configs between various tools which got major upgrades but it has to be done even in rolling release distros, its just more spread out in time there.
>>
>>58795947
There's probably nothing wrong with replacing your current version name in your various sources.list files with the new one, but it's more complicated on Ubuntu than it is on Debian. I and most other people take the opportunity given by a new version to perform a fresh install and enjoy the benefits thereof.

The Chromium UI font is too small, and so are fonts on some (not all) webpages in Firefox. How do I change this without just increasing the font size in the settings? I think it's a fontconfig issue because it started after I deleted /etc/fonts/conf.d by accident.

Notepad++ is the best editor/IDE in windows. I have to admit that.
I don't advocate for software devs being political. It's okay to have a political viewpoint but bringing politics cancer into academics and engineering is plain wrong.

Two kinds of people I hate more than anything:
1. SJWs:
Hurr Durr we need more women
If a woman is a good developer she doesn't need to be distinguished. Furthermore you can hide your gender/sexual preference/skin color behind anonymity and still have a repo on github without being so vocal about it.

2. (The new kind) White Justice Worriors:
The level of cancer of WJWs far exceeds the most chronic SJWs.
>Muh oppressed white men
>Muh female privilege
>We are cucks
>Shove some red pills up my asshole
>Bash is a nigger shell XD install a white shell
They are all the cancer of SJWs + unironic pseudo white defender syndrome

You can check what your system reports from within your local network. Conceptually, the only way to see if your ports are opened correctly, and configured to work with external connections, is to become an external connection.
Even if you are pinging from within a VM, the network still goes through your upper kernel, and them through your router.

It goes through your router slash thing that broadcasts a public ipv4/6.

Only an external source can check, there needs to at least be one jump to an external ip not on your network.

Fuck off.

Help needed with dual booting Windows 10 and Kali. For my first installation I went balls deep with Debian and that went fine as I did a live installation and ran into a couple of problems such as wifi but I solved by using google to find a solution. I removed Debian and installed Windows 10, as people have told me it's easier to have windows 10 installed first then follow up with linux. I loaded the Kali Live on my USB using rufus, and accessed my UEFI firmware in win10 to turn off secure boot and move USB to the top, but it won't boot from my USB no matter what I do. I turned to Legacy and when I go to boot options my USB would display and when I choose it, it would say I didn't have installation media on my USB. I've been to the Kali forums as well and searched many topics, even back to the older versions when Kali didn't support UFI and tried downloading BOOTx64 and GRUB from fedora and putting them in the boot folder and creating a boot from that, but still no luck. I have a Acer Aspire E15 (E5-573)

Should I just return to Debian when trying this dual boot? But isn't Kali debian based? I'm not understanding.
>>
>>58796763
Try it, its for Linux too.
>>
>>58796725
It's not just SJWs or as you call them, WJWs. It's anyone who feels identity is important. That said you should expect someone to fight back when there's an active attempt of shaming his own identity which he cannot change, no matter the race or gender, so these WJWs (I knew of them but I didn't know of that description) are nothing but a natural reaction. Not telling you to accept them but you know, it's not illogical. There's always going to be reactionary groups of people against anything that shames groups of people, and to be fair, as of late white men are being hated by these specific groups.
>>
>>58796814
Why are you dualbooting KALI, of all distros? And with Windows 10, too.
Is this a laptop?
Just use a VM, man.

Alternatively, use the Gentop handbook and install from that. It has a guide for UEFI installation on top of other systems, if I recall correctly.

Be advised. You want to use genkernel.

Yes, ext4
Try a f2fs partition. Try ~100GB for starters, see if it has any better performance than ext4.
I doubt it will, though

i just use startx instead of lightdm since i think it's ugly, but on my new install of debian after i decrypt my drive the screen goes black. i can ctrl+alt+f2 to get to a terminal and login there, so i guess it doesn't really matter, i'm just wondering why this happens
